The Jays might be a good fit for Pavono. He won't be under a microscope and if they get him to sign a 1 year deal with heavy incentives, he could make some decent money. If he gets hurt nothing lost to the Jays.

And one thing Pavono has shown is that he miracuosly gets healthy in contract years.

People here are always telling me that we do not need ANY pitchers, and a few readers prefer this staff:

Wang
Joba
Hughes
Aceves
IPK and the rest of AAA/AAAA fight it out

I prefer the second one up there, but wouldn't mind the first.

I'm with you as well; this is the exact, two rotations I had envisioned in my head with said circumstances.

It beats the Red Sox, yes, but not the Rays. The Red Sox really have three guaranteed starters in their rotation: Jon Lester, Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka (Heh, I was so close to typing "Fatsuzaka"... damn you, NoMaas!). There have been reports that Tim Wakefield is considering retirement due to some shoulder ailments he's been suffering (this was reported on Sons of Sam Horn after Boston picked up his annual $4M option, but I haven't heard anything since), and they have no starter currently slotted in that fifth hole.

As for the Rays, there's no point in discussing that, they truly have the best rotation in baseball (even if Jake Peavy goes to the Cubs, I still say the Rays are tops).

Oh, and I'd re-sign Andy Pettitte to pitch in that fifth slot over Phil Hughes. Don't get me wrong, I'd have no qualms with Hughes starting the season with the big boys if only one starter is signed, but Pettitte's two-hundred innings are not to be undervalued.
