Open Thread: Ex-Yanks on the move

By

The Hot Stove picked up a little steam this evening, as ex-Yank Javy Vazquez was dealt back to the NL East in a five player deal with the Atlanta Braves. The deal is pending a physical tomorrow, but otherwise it represents the first of many moves we’ll see over the next 10 days.

Yankees’ fans have a strong and somewhat irrational dislike for Vazquez, but the bottom line is that he’s been one of the better pitchers in baseball this century. He’s supremely durable, throwing the second most innings in the game since 2000 (at least 198 IP for nine straight years), and a strikeout machine, trailing only Randy Johnson in K’s during that time. His ERA is 4.11 since 2000, just 0.05 runs higher than Andy Pettitte‘s (that’s one extra run every 180 IP). Given the Braves’ current rotation situation (Jair Jurrjens and pray for rain), the move is exactly what the team needs.

The ChiSox are reportedly getting three players in return, but LHP Jo-Jo Reyes and IF Brent Lillibridge are fringy guys who shouldn’t play a key role on a contending team. The third prospect, Tyler Flowers, is what makes deal worth it for Kenny Williams’ & Co. One of the best unknown prospects out there, Flowers projects to be an offensive catcher who holds his own behind the plate. He’s hit .291-.400-.488 in his three pro seasons, and he just finished annihilating the AzFL with a 232 OPS+. He instantly becomes the best White Sox prospect not named Beckham, and should render AJ Pierzynski moot no later than 2010. The Braves are also getting garden variety LOOGY Boone Logan.

Boy, Kenny Williams’ trades always seem to come out of nowhere, huh?

*****

Not to be overshadowed by Javy, ex-Yanks’ draftee Matt Carson agreed to a minor league deal with the A’s and also gets an invite to Major League Spring Training. Good for him. Here’s your open thread of for the evening, talk about the trade or anything else here. Just pay play nice.

  1. Rafi says:

You have to figure that this puts them out of the market for Peavy, no? What do you think about this trade? I can’t believe that the Braves gave up so much.

    • Mike A. says:

It doesn’t take them out of the running for Peavy, but it’ll be tougher without Flowers. I like the move for the Braves, they desperately needed a quality innings eater like Javy. Flowers wasn’t going to unseat McCann.

      • Steve says:

Right, but since some of the other Peavy pieces went in this deal, now in order to make the Peavy deal they would need to include Hanson, which they said all along they wouldn’t. Also, from the Braves POV their need for a pitcher just lessened dramatically.

I have to think it is much, much less likely now.

        • Mike Pop says:

I dont think they would NEED to include Hanson.. Yunel Schafer and Morton is a great start to it.. I think they still end up signign one of Burnett, Garland, or Perez

          • Steve says:

I’m thinking Towers wanted 2 top prospects, so if only one was available then the other pieces were there to compensate. If those secondary pieces are gone . . . back to square 1.

            • Mike Pop says:

Is Schafer not a top prospect ? Wouldnt him and Escobar be a great start ? Schafer projects to be pretty good right ?

        • A.D. says:

Or they sell out, and get Peavy & Vasquez… sure they mortgage the farm, but Chipper isn’t getting any younger.

Man the Braves rotation would look nice now if Hudson & Smoltz hadn’t both gone down

  2. Bill says:

Did the Yankees inquire about re-aquiring him?
I wonder what he would have costed?

Anyway this definitely improves our changes of getting Peavy.
The bottom like is that I would rather pay prospects AND pay Peavy 15 million a year that pay Burnett, Lowe, or Sheets 15 million a year while keeping the prospects, or Pay some like Oliver Perez 10 million a year.

If SD is willing to accept Jackson, Kennedy, Suttle, and Veras the Yankees better not be gun-shy, asumming that Peavy is willing to waive his no-trade clasue if we pick up his 25 million option.

  3. Pedro(from Brazil) says:

First time here (always reading never writing)….
I think improve ours chance with Peavy too. I like the package you put Bill but i would try to change Veras for another guy ( i like his stuff and i think he can be better next year).

Ps: Sorry about the english but it’s been a loooooooooong timlast time i wrote in english !!

  4. Jamal G. says:

One of the best unknown prospects out there, Flowers…

Really? I couldn’t hear or read enough about this dude when the AzFL was about three weeks old. Hell, I’ve read – on more than one occasion – posts that call him the best prospect – behind the plate- not named Matt Wieters.

    • Mike A. says:

Well then, perhaps I … uh … misunderestimated Flowers’ sleeperness.

      • Jamal G. says:

Then again, maybe I just misread the temperature of the prospect community. Come to think of it, the posters over at Project Prospect seem to get a serious man-love for any prospect that has a hot month.

Speaking of which, how would you rank the catching prospects in the non-Wieters division?

        I’ll say:

        1. Carlos Santana
        2. Buster Posey
        3. Max Ramirez
        4. Taylor Teagarden
        5. Jesus Montero

My guy-to-watch is the Phillies’ Lou Marson. Although his power has not arrived yet, playing in that ballpark, it may not be as huge an issue as some might think.

  5. I think Donnie Walsh should consider hiring Plaxico Burress to shoot Stephon Marbury.

  6. Jamal G. says:

Seeing as how Flowers’ inclusion is still not known for a fact, where else could he play on the diamond?

  7. Mike Pop says:

Man Steve Smith robbed at gunpoint… Plax is saying “shoulda carried tha gun son”

    • Heh, that was the most idiotic/infuriating thing of the whole Plax shooting thing. Can’t remember where I heard this, but apparently Plax is claiming that he packed the gat that night because Steve Smith had gotten robbed and he was afraid that somebody at the LQ would try and rob him for all his icy chains.

Like, DUMBASS, perhaps if you’re afraid somebody at the club would rob you of your icy bling, you DON’T GO TO THE NIGHTCLUB WITH ALL YOUR ICY BLING. Is that not a fucking thought in your idiotic brain? Did they pass a law I didn’t know about saying that all rich athletes must buy assloads of diamonds and bring them to a dangerous nightclub full of drunken/high potential thieves?

First of all, you don’t NEED any of that jewelry. But, if you MUST buy it, you certainly don’t NEED to take it everywhere, certainly not a place you’re afraid of getting robbed. You don’t see me buying t-bone steaks and going into the lion’s cage at the zoo, do you?

      What a moron.

      • Mike Pop says:

Ya well noone knew it was him that night… He was playing his usual role on friday nights as “Walt Harris”.. NYPD, former corrections officer at the Green Haven Correctionals Facility but got moved up due to outstanding achievements

      • Mike Pop says:

Then again.. He had to look “so fresh and so clean clean”

  8. Steve says:

Congrats to the Mexican Gangsta, turns out he’s just a big teddy bear after all.

    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/200.....do-aceves/

  9. Mike A. says:

I really hope the Braves manage to get Peavy & resign Smoltz too. Then their rotation will be Jake, John, Jair, Javy, and Jo-Jo.

  10. Do you think the Sox are setting themselves up for a maverick run at Peavy? Poreda + Flowers + Marquez + IPK and Melky a B/C level guy could do it, right?

    • Mike Pop says:

Would he even approve it ?

    • Jamal G. says:

According to multiple reports (and by that I mean various posts by MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes), the ChiSox are trying to cut payroll; therefore, I don’t see how they can justify shopping the present in Jermaine Dye and Javier Vazquez, then go and sell the future in a package for Jake “Peavey” (who will certainly require that $22M, club option being picked up as compensation for waiving his NTC).

      • Steve says:

They’re sort of rebuilding. Williams feels like they overachieved last year, and wants to retool with an eye to the future. Like everyone else, after the Ray’s success last year he wants to get “younger” and “more athletic”. THe steroid era is over, and lots of teams have to go back to building teams they way they did in the 70′s and 80′s.

  11. Conan the Barack O'Brian says:

Are we interested in Delmon Young? And what would it take?

  12. Mike Pop says:

Last 3 word sentence of the post.. Cmon Mike

  13. Manimal says:

Kenny Williams has a plan, I’m just waiting to see what blockbuster hes going to pull out of his ass now.

  14. Jamal G. says:

“House” time, bitches (oh, and go Blazers!).

  15. Mike A. says:

    “You’re going down Manning.”

“Yes I am. Fourth floor, getting a massage.”

Heh, how can you not love Peyton’s commercials?

D-CAF!!! clap clap D-CAF!! clap clap

  16. daniel says:

paying burnett or lowe a ludicrous contract would be terrible, not because of the money but because of the commitment for so many years. though the large contract is clearly not great, the biggest downside is the virtual guarantee that probably neither of them would be effective for more than half of the length of their contract (basically 3 years for burnett, probably 2 for lowe). Because sheets is not a long-term deal, its not a bad idea, and i would welcome him as a piece.
this definitely makes getting peavy easier. i dont want to give up AJax, but if thats what it takes, a proven starter is worth much more than a decent outfield prospect. My practical wishlist is CC, sheets, peavy in a deal where we either keep a couple meaningful prospects, and adam dunn,no one to more than a 4 yr deal other than CC.

    • Mike Pop says:

All 3 is too much.. No need for Sheets if we get Jake and vice versa.. You bring back Andy and sign CC.. Thats what we have to do to start.. Then you got Wang and Joba also.. Thats 4.. Sheets or Peavy would be nice but not a necessity.. Id rather go Sheets.. We cant deplete the farm more since its just starting to take shape again

    • Steve says:

I was right there with you, up until Adam Dunn.

CC-Sheets-Peavy-Wang-Joba sounds amazing to me. That’s the best rotation we’ve had since 2003, and might be better than any of the 90′s championship teams. I think we have enough depth to handle things if Sheets goes on the DL, assuming it isn’t TJ or something. Sheets is a better pitcher than AJ, and he’ll sign for less years.

  17. A.D. says:

Either Kenny Williams pulls off something big, or they keep on selling, but it seems like they would want to keep Flowers, and otherwise Jo-Jo Reyes & Marquez don’t seem like major pieces to any deal.

Does this signal the Buehrle, Dye, and possibly Contreras are on the move?

  18. A.D. says:

Does Beckham move Alexi Ramirez off SS or vice versa

  19. Jamal G. says:

I just laughed out loud; being swarmed by a bunch of morbidly, obese folk must not be fun.

  20. Jamal G. says:

For anyone watching “House”, is it me, or is Kiefer Sutherland doing the voice-overs for those Bank of America commercials?

  21. A.D. says:

Looks like Jo-Jo Reyes isn’t in the deal, but the Sox will get 4 players

  22. Steve says:

So how long until the Braves trade Vasquez? That’s 5 teams in the past 6 years.

I give it 2 years, tops.

  23. Steve H says:

“I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada,” he said. “I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. Enjoy the game tonight.”

Shouldn’t the NHL embrace Mike Avery for bringing attention to the league. That’s great stuff, and he gets an indefinite suspension for it. Yet here I am, bringing up the NHL>

  24. steve (different one) says:

i would just like to thank the keepers of this site for reisisting the urge to name the Adam Dunn thread “Git ‘Er Dunn” in favor of the much less annoying “Get It Dunn”.

    kudos.

    • Steve says:

Let’s see . . . he’s 31, his trial won’t be over until the middle of next year at the earliest. The best case scenario is a plea bargain for 2 years, if he goes to trial he’ll get 3.5 minimum. The case is a slam dunk, its almost impossible for him to get off completely.

Played his last game? I’d say ‘Yes”.

      • Steve says:

He’d be 32 by the time the trial is over, so if he got 2 years (serves 85%) the first season he could return for would be the 2011 season. He’d be 34 and hasn’t played in 2 years.

      • Too bad it’s not a federal rap, I was hoping Plax woulda ended up in the same prison with Vick and they coulda teamed up with Paul Crewe and taken on the guards…

      • Reggie C. says:

Plax has a good shot at playing next season, especially if the NFL takes a passive approach on this one. The NFL isn’t going to suspend Plax for a whole season. He’ll likely lost 2-4 games. Plax has a good lawyer for a reason. Hopefully, discovery & Motion practice draws this one out, and this doesn’t see the inside of a courtroom for a good while. If he’s not a G-man next season, I still hope he gets to play.

        • A) Roger Goodell hasn’t exactly been very reluctant to use his suspension power. Mike Vick, Chris Henry, Tank Johnson, and Pacman Jones say hello. I recognize that Burress has been a (virtual) model citizen to this point, but Plax is facing a virtual open and shut case with 3 plus years of potential jailtime. Goodell could easily say this one single act is worse than all of Pacman’s smaller transgressions put together.

          B) I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Giants move to terminate his contract, which they might be able to. And Burress as a free agent, looking for a new team, with a probable league suspension of some sort, doesn’t add up to Plax playing soon.

          • Mike Pop says:

Ya man Plax potentially ended his NFL career with that boneheaded move

          • Reggie C. says:

Pacman’s smaller transgressions? Didn’t some Joe end up paralyzed in that club altercation? Whatever the potential for disaster existed at LQNY, the alleged crime only injured Plax. Plax also isn’t a recidivist offender with DUIs, assault claims, etc… I don’t think it merits a suspension the likes the guys above landed. I just hope Plax’s lawyer can navigate his way ’round this one. Delay-delay-delay this one!

            • But the gigantic difference between the two is that Pacman was at a club altercation where some dude got paralyzed by somebody ELSE and not by Pacman (he merely started/exacerbated the fight, but didn’t directly cause anybody’s injury), while Plax HIMSELF committed the crime of possessing an illegal gun, crossing state lines with it, and bringing said loaded illegal weapon into a crowded club where it discharged. The fact that the bullet struck nobody but him is what makes it a 3 and a half year sentence and not a 20 year sentence, but HE STILL BROUGHT AN ILLEGAL WEAPON ACROSS STATE LINES AND FIRED IT IN A PUBLIC VENUE.

Pacman went to a stripclub and made it rain, setting off an unfortunate chain of events where other ignorant muhfuckas not employed by the NFL did ignorant shit and somebody ended up shot.

Plax HIMSELF committed a felony. His personal and intentional actions were unlawful. The fact that he is the victim does not change the fact that he was the perpetrator of a serious felony.

    • A.D. says:

Wost line I’ve heard so far is local newscaster: “Plax’s season is shot”

  30. Mike Pop says:

    Heh… Sabathis rumors debunked

    • Reggie C. says:

Good. Now hopefully Sabathia realizes that his preferred West Coast teams just aren’t that serious for him, and it prompts him to sign during the winter meetings.

      • Steve H says:

And again, who says he prefers the West Coast? The guy has never pitched on the West Coast in his career, and loved both Cleveland and Milwaukee, but apparently can’t wait to get to the West Coast.

        Negotiating 101

        • Mike Pop says:

And the funny thing that people forget to mention is that he was all for pitching in Cleveland before the 08 season started… He cut off talks in ST. No sportswriters ever bring that up anymore.. All you hear is he wants to pitch for the Giants/Dodgers/Angels

          • Steve H says:

Leaking that is the best way to drive up the price of a non-West Coast team. Maybe one with bucket loads of cash and a desperate need for an ace. Sound familiar?

  31. A.D. says:

BA has Jeter still at SS in 2012 (though A-Rod has moved to 1b) and Hughes as our #5

    http://www.baseballamerica.com.....67148.html

    • Mike Pop says:

Do people really think A-Rod cant play 3rd for that much longer? Nady though idk are we really going to resign him ?

    • Xavier Nady is the one that makes me laugh the most out of that.

In BA’s defense, they simply look at our in-house options and forecast the best they can, dumping older players and keeping all our younger players.

But yeah, the Yankees predictions are always screwy, because there’s no way we don’t fill some, if not most, of our holes via outside acquisition.

      • Mike Pop says:

        Agreed

      • whozat says:

“In BA’s defense, they simply look at our in-house options and forecast the best they can, dumping older players and keeping all our younger players.”

What else could they do? It’d be pointless to try and forecast stuff involving players outside the organization.

Look at that rotation, though. That is some serious potential. At least one of those guys will never pitch a full season in the bigs, though. An interesting thought, though…as Wang approaches free agency, do you trade him? Not because they can’t afford him, but because they could get some serious return for him. An SS to replace Jeter?

    • Steve H says:

I think we discussed this when it came out. It’s only basing the 2012 team on what is in the organization now. So no suitable replacement for Jeter at SS means Jeter stays at SS. It does not consider any future drafting, signings, or trades.

  32. FWIW, Rob Neyer said in his chat today that, if he had to pick between Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett, each of them on a FIVE year deal, he’d pick Lowe, because even though he’s older and pitched in the NL West, he’s more consistent and you know what you’re going to get from him for the 5 years, while Burnett (who has superior stuff) is too inconsistent and injury prone to be trusted for 5 years.

He also says that Lowe being a sinkerballer who doesn’t rely heavily on velocity portends well for him to not break down or fall off a cliff, despite his age.

“Okay, here’s a fundamental problem I have with Burnett, even aside from all those stints on the DL . . . He’s never been all that great. He’s never picked up a single point in the Cy Young balloting. The best ERA+ in his career was 122, six years ago; Lowe’s *career* ERA+ is 122. I think Lowe might be healthier *and* more talented.”

    http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/.....t_id=23885

    • whozat says:

      That’s a helluva good point.

If they get CC, who’s your next starter target? Let’s assume they’ve signed Pettitte for between 12 and 14 mil…they both want it to happen, it’s just a matter of dollars.

Sign CC with Moose, Pavano and Farnsworth’s money. Sign Pettitte with…his own money. That gives you Abreu and Giambi’s money. What do you do with it? They want to save some, so you can probably get Tex and nobody, or Dunn and somebody.

      • Ed says:

A-Rod’s salary goes up $5 million next year.
Cano’s salary goes up $3 million
        Swisher gets $5.3 million
        Marte gets $3.75 million
Wang, Nady, and Bruney get raises in arbitration.

There goes Giambi’s salary. If they’re serious about cutting payroll, then there isn’t much left to spend.

    • whozat says:

You could probably also get Lowe and some 4-6 million dollar player…but who? And at what position?
