Mattingly was a nice player, but he's not one of the all-time greats. I dare someone to compare him to the likes of Ruth, Maris, Mantle, Ruth, DiMaggio, Berra, etc. The only thing that's comparable is his popularity, even though his teams did exactly nothing. Give the Yankees credit: They’re not some nouveau riche team throwing their money around on whatever shiny baubles they come across in free agency. Signing three of the top four free agents on the market is a sign that they have excellent taste, even if they don’t seem to have a credit limit.

This is really the point – we’re taking an advantage of an excellent free agent market at a time while we are flush with cash. We’re not going to need to splurge like this again for a long time.
