Ok cool I did not really get that whole convo. I personally never wanted to trade Cano but I do feel like if he continues to not get how the game is played and just gives away at bats and plays uneven baseball in the field I would be in favor or getting rid of him.

Ryan, that is why I think Cashman is not doing his total job. If he is not personally doing this shouldnt we have guys like Stick Michael and the other scouts pounding the pavement looking for these "diamonds"?

A lot of our "home grown" dynasty guys came from overseas situations where our $ and the teams name went far to sign the guy.

Cashman seems to not let anybody build up too much power underneath him in this organization which is smart to keep his job but I fear it it not smart if he wants to win a series of rings.

I doubt Smoltz signs here, and really I do not see the purpose of us signing him unless it was on the super cheap.

I think with the Penny move Smoltz goes back to Atlanta. But I could still see it possibly happening where he goes to the Sox. The reason I think you bring in Pettitte is that you think he can pitch 200 innings if need be, nobody in baseball thinks that Smoltz will give them that so that is why I do not see him landing here. But if i could get Smoltz for 4 million or Pettitte for 10, with the young guys I got like Hughes I take Smoltz knowing that at some point Hughes will fill the spot.

I think they will have difficulty in moving Castillo unless they pay his whole contract which if they were willing to do that why not just release the guy and sign who you want?

I think Castillo has leg issues, and recovery issues which prevent him from being the player he was some 5 years ago.

Much later, for posterity...I was talking about Grady Sizemore for CF, and it was in response to a hypothetical about a non-trade.

Lions fan for many years and many reasons.
This is unacceptable, with the players they have. No way can anyone justify such a dismal season. This all starts at the top, half their draft choices have been really, really bad...Matt Mac should be hung by his balls. Every year it was the same (at draft time) one out of ten would be good, the rest...not so good.
When one picks a player ranked (with everyone) number 78+ in the 2nd round, there is a big failure to communicate. This would happen every round except the first round (sometimes).
I'll always be a Lions fan but, if you very young Yankee fans think you have it bad....be a Lions fan!

I think they still have a hard on for Orlando Hudson for some reason. They're not gonna get him unless they can move Castillo, obviously, but the argument can easily be made--I did it to a friend today--that Castillo is the better player.

Its such an obvious way to flex our financial might. Give fliers the highest minor league contract out there - what's an extra $200K to us if that's what it takes? All you need is to uncover one diamond every couple years to more than make up for all the junk you'll end up with. I'm totally with you on this Donnie.
