Rays meeting with former Yanks

By Benjamin Kabak

While nothing may come of this news, at least it’s real and tangible. The Tampa Rays, as evidenced by a photograph and confirmed report on the St. Petersburg Times’ Heater blog, have met with Jason Giambi and plan to talk to Bobby Abreu as well. Giambi makes a lot of sense for Tampa. He could play the Cliff Floyd role and would do so better than Floyd did in 2008. I’m not quire sure what Tampa wants or needs with Abreu, but they’re just checking out all the options.

Manimal says:

I thought Ken Griffy Jr would be a better match, but Giambi could work.

A.D. says:

Griffy might want more money than Big G

steve (different one) says:

the Rays are trying to reacquire Kevin Stocker. first step, sign Abreu.

A.D. says:

Giambi would be a nice match, full time DH down there, give them a solid middle of the order bat.

No way they match what Abreu is at least currently looking for.

AndrewYF says:

I don’t trust the photo. It could have been photoshopped. Until the AP confirms that Giambi met with Maddon, with the appropriate pictures of Giambi double-fisting a couple of Irish whiskey bottles, I can’t see how I’m supposed to believe this actually happened.

Accent Shallow says:

Giambi in the Cliff Floyd role? You mean, DH and occasional RF?

I’d pay to see that.

Ben K. says:

You’re being a bit literal. DH and occasional 1B. But the point was DH + occasional fielder.

Mike Pop says:

He would easily have better production than Floyd. Makes their lineup alot better imo.

Accent Shallow says:

I knew what you meant, just wanted to have a laugh at Giambi playing the outfield.

6 things for Ben Sheets to do when signing with New York:

6)He will teach Wang how to base run better in an NL game.

5)He will dare not to ask for #51 due to the fact is Bernie William’s number upton flip flopping #15.

4)He will wear #25 because of a)Joe Girardi wore it, b)Jim Abbot threw a no-hit game, c)at the age of 25 was his only dominating year in 2004 before the injuries, d) started 25 major league career games, e) and flip flop #52 in honor of CC Sabathia.

3)He will actually wear #52 because CC told him too.

2)He will live with Joe Girardi until he finds a house.

1)Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez will teach him how to be rich and famous, and score hot celebrities.

:) lol

Nady Nation says:

Graziano says Burnett was the mystery player Cashman met with tonight. And he plans to meet with more…

A.D. says:

Mike and Joe need to be stalking Cash to see who he meets with

Steve says:

Oooh. . . . . nice find.

The Yanks seem to be growing tired of dancing with CC, and are stepping up their pursuits of Plans B and C. Maybe its a way of putting some pressure on CC, or maybe the meeting wasn’t as positive as they reported. 2 meetings in 2 days would lead you to believe CC has a LOT of reservations about NY. I’m sure the Yanks will leave the CC offer out there, but if they reach a deal with . . say Burnett and Sheets, its possible they could pull it since both are top of the rotation guys when healthy.

Andy Pettitte should also make up his mind fast. If it comes down to him or Sheets/Burnett, I think the Yanks will go with the latter.

Ron says:

Pete Abe says the meeting was with Sabathia.

I thought Joe & Mike were supposed to be on site sorting this shit out.

Mike Popavero says:

Their busy doing blow and hookers

Hookers and blow, not blow and hookers.

Don’t fuck up my carefully crafted iambic pentameter.

BTW-Suzyn Waldman said tonight the NJ Star Ledger is going to be dropping Baseball coverage soon. Like the Chicago Trib and a zillion other newspapers, its losing money and has to cut back on reporters. I would assume they would still have a sports section, but just reprint stuff off the AP wire or something.

Anyone else heard this? Bad news for Klapisch and Graziano, who are both pretty good.

Ben K. says:

Ugh. NJ.com’s been doing some stellar baseball reporting lately. That’s really too bad. I’d heard this rumor a few months ago but then nothing came of it.

Steve says:

With the economy being as bad as it is, there’s not much opportunity to get a loan from somewhere. The Banks are getting bailed out as well, the last thing they need is to invest in a money losing operation.

Steve says:

Play it again Sam.

The Cubs “vehemently deny” a Peavy deal is close. As they have about 500 other times this off season.

They would need to deal Marquis AND their ownership situation needs to be settled. If it’s going to happen, its weeks away. At which point, Burnett may sign somewhere besides the Braves and maybe Towers could get Wren back in the mix.

This is getting old. Its not happening anytime soon.

Brooklyn Ed says:

Cashman meets Sabathia again, this time in SF

Brian Cashman is meeting with CC Sabathia in the San Francisco area tonight. It was a last-minute meeting, not sure who requested it, but a number of sources have confirmed the meeting to Newsday.
This appears to be a good sign for the Yankees, as Cashman is meeting with Sabathia for the third time in three days. One reason for this meeting may be for Sabathia’s wife, Amber, to get to talk to Cashman. She is a major part of this decision-making process.

meeting CC 3times in three straight days? this has to be good news.

steve (different one) says:

is this like the 40 Year Old Virgin? 20 dates before they consumate the relationship?

Steve says:

Looks like CC is using the “3 date rule”. He’s a real New Yorker.

Ron says:

Hey, whatever it takes. Just get it done.

Steve H says:

Let’s not read anything into this. If CC didn’t despise the Yankees, the East Coast and the AL he would have taken the Yankees offer by now, right?

Steve says:

Why not? A 3rd meeting in 3 days is good news. If he wasn’t interested, he would be blowing the Yanks off.

You don’t meet with someone you don’t want to work with.

Ron says:
Steve H says:

Yes. Thank you. There were enough people on here that wanted to move on from CC because of the aforementioned “facts” about CC’s desires.

AndrewYF says:

I can’t imagine Cashman requested the meeting. So if Sabathia requested the meeting, how can that not mean anything?

Steve says:

Not just Burnett, apparently Cash met with CC tonight as well. There are rumors he met with Lowe also, but I haven’t found a link. I think Heyman said that on WFAN.

http://yankees.lhblogs.com/200.....-sabathia/

Looks like he’s pushing to get a decision from someone. Maybe we’ll have some good news when we wake up manana.

JD Dorian says:
Ben K. says:

Well played, Dr. Dorian.

steve (different one) says:

this was hilarious. never saw it before.

Adam says:

Is it just me, or is Giambi going to be one of the biggest bargains this offseason? Is there any chance he signs for over $8 million, or for more than 2 years? Maybe I’ve been reading his market completely wrong. But anyway, if you take away the expectation that he’ll play the field more than once a week, then you’re getting a DH who’s basically guaranteed a .900 OBS while healthy. I think a team like Tampa, LA of Anaheim or Oakland should jump at Giambi. He’d be the perfect #5 hitter on all those clubs, while costing a hell of a lot less than Manny, Burrell or Dunn.

dkidd says:

i guess i’ve gotten used to giambi in pinstripes. hard to picture him in a rays uniform

Dillon says:

CC is a Yankee!
