Updates on Burnett and Sabathia

By

We know that The Yanks are on CC Sabathia’s list. Now we hear via Jayson Stark that last night’s meeting was mostly a session for CC to gauge life in New York. That’s fair enough. As Stark notes, this is a major life decision for CC, as he’ll likely be signed through most of his remaining productive years. Why not have all the information possible at hand before making that decision.

(Though someone might disagree about obtaining as much info as possible to make a decision.)

The Yanks are also making moves on their second free agent target, A.J. Burnett. Jerry Crasick reports that the Yankees are looking to make an offer, and “might be willing to surpass the guaranteed dollar figure that Atlanta has on the table for the free agent right-hander.” The Atlanta deal is reportedly for four years and $60 million, with an option for a fifth year which could bring the package to $75 million. No one seems sure about the nature of the option; early word was that it would vesting, though it could just be a team one.

Oh, and Sheets is in the house. When asked about the Yankees, he replied: “I haven’t even given it thought.” That might not sound good, but he also had this to say about his prospects in general: “There’s nothing out there for me to contemplate right now.” So we will see.

I could see this CC thing ending tonight or tomorrow morning, allowing Boras to move on to some trickyer clients.

  2. Rob D. says:

I’m not even sure what being on his list means. Wouldn’t any team thinking about making him an offer be on his list?

Back when I worked at a guitar shop I had to do some stupid sale at Costco. No one walks into Costco wanting to buy a Fender Stratocaster. About 5 minutes after sitting down, I got that book from their table and finished it before the end of the day. Great read.

  7. Brian says:

Dodgers’ GM says CC told him he wants to play for the Dodgers. Thoughts?

    • Joseph P. says:

We’ve already talked about this on this thread.

    • Brian says:

My thoughts are that if it’s true, then he’s just screwing with us to get another offer. I’d pull the current offer. If the Dodgers only have to compete with Milwaukee, then Sabathia can enjoy making less than Barry Zito, but I wouldn’t want to sit around trying to facilitate CC’s contract negotiations with another team.

“Heyman agrees, suggesting a forthcoming Yankee offer for Burnett in the four-year, $64MM range.”

Damn that’s a lot of money for AJ.

    “Twins Interested In Tejada
By Tim Dierkes [December 8 at 6:57pm CST]

6:57pm: MLB.com’s Alyson Footer says the Twins expressed interest in Tejada. The Astros would like to get one of the Twins’ young starters, and would be willing to eat salary.”

    MLBTR

Now the only question is ‘Why?’

    • DonnieBaseballHallofFame aka they guy who has well documented history of belligerent thickheadedness and anti-intellectual character assassinations says:

They need somebody to teach their young players how to inject undetected PEDs

    • Jamal G. says:

Well, the fact that he’s able to put solid wood on the ball (23.4 LD% ranked 13th amongst all N.L. hitters) might lead the Twins to believe he will fare a bit better playing eighty-one games on that turbo field in the Metrodome. Also, he led N.L. short stops with an .856 Zone Rating, so his defense (which was reported to be better than expected) wouldn’t be a huge factor. Lastly, Tejada is a free-agent-to-be entering in the 2009 season, so this is purely a short-term solution. I actually like this idea.

  12. A.D. says:

Well sheets should start thinking about it and then go ahead and sign

    • DonnieBaseballHallofFame aka they guy who has well documented history of belligerent thickheadedness and anti-intellectual character assassinations says:

      EXACTLY

  13. Derek says:

what’s the likey breakdown of the CC contract in terms of years? like 2009 he’d make X, 2010 he’d make X, and so on

    • Steve says:

In each year of the contract he makes 23 million McDonald’s cheeseburgers (or 8 million Big Macs)

Plus, he gets a 7 million Chilpotle Burger signing bonus.

      • DonnieBaseballHallofFame aka they guy who has well documented history of belligerent thickheadedness and anti-intellectual character assassinations says:

If we win the World Series in any of the years he gets a supersize for each remaining years burgers.

    • pat says:

Most likely frontloaded so hes getting paid the most while hes most productive.

    • whozat says:

In one way, it’s to the Yanks’ advantage to front-load it. They get some exemptions from revenue sharing due to the new stadium construction this season, and I think next season too. That’s part of the reason that ARod’s deal is front-loaded.

However, the economy bites. So…they might want to push it back some.

Upshot…I dunno :-) That will be governed by factors that elude us. It will likely not contain as much deferred money as the Milwaukee deal, if any at all.

  14. VO says:

23 Million next year on CC Sabathia, does anyone realize thats for then were paying for ANY of our players besides AROD. Or our whole bullpen combined.

  15. mustang says:

“Per Sherman, the Yanks met with Sheets today.”

There is hope and Sheets and Jeter have the same agent for what it’s worth.
Things are starting to heat up at MLBTR.

  16. VO says:

7:17pm: Bill Shaikin talked to a Giants official who says they’re “definitively” not interested in Manny Ramirez. They are, however, interested in Sabathia.

Abraham notes that Sabathia requested that second meet with the Yanks.

6:19pm: Peter Abraham learned from Brian Cashman that the Yanks met with Sabathia again today.

    Whats going on here??

  17. VO says:

7:26pm: Dan Graziano says Sabathia requested both Yankees meetings, the second of which took place at the pitcher’s room at the Wynn. Sabathia’s left Vegas, and didn’t give the Yanks a timetable

  18. VO says:

7:31pm: The Yankees are looking for a utility infielder, and Brian Cashman said today Punto is on their radar

Did i predict this or not???

  19. VO says:

CC asked to meet with the Yankees for the second time after he spoke with the Dodgers. He’s looking at his options, but right now the Yankees seem to be his best choice.
