Yanks leaving the lights on for us

By Benjamin Kabak

The view from above at night. (Photo by Tom Kaminski/WCBS 880)

For five hours a day, Tom Kaminski patrols the skies above New York in WCBS 880 AM’s helicopter. Last night, he happened to swing by Yankee Stadium following the Sabathia-Burnett press conference, and the Yanks had seemingly left the line on for him. It’s hard not to get excited over the new stadium when the shots look as good as the one above.

Kaminski also shot the interior of the new stadium with the lights on from a few angles. You can see the full gallery by following either of those links, and as a bonus, check out the half-deconstructed Shea Stadium too.

Hilarious. The one of the Es is already out.

I know, that’s the first thing I noticed.

Phil McCracken says:

Anyone else not a big fan of the “Yankee Stadium” sign in left field?

Yank Crank 20 says:

I happen to like it a lot, but that’s just me.

The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

A reporter once asked Donald Trump if it was really necessary to put the name “Trump” in all his buildings, or if it was just needless overkill.

He responded by saying, “TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP”.

I think the new stadium looks at beautiful as the billions of dollars of revenue that it will yield.

Matt M says:

dont ya just get the chilly october night vibe from that photo? = D

Ryan S. says:

I would if the stadium was filled to the brim with rabid fans cheering the team on its way to #27…so, ask me in 10 months or so.

I’m not gonna lie, CitiField looks great.

Jack says:

Don’t you mean Citi/Taxpayer Field?

I’m not gonna lie, CitiField looks great.

I’m not gonna lie to you, Brian… that smells like pure gasoline.

Mike Pop says:

60% of the time, it works every time.

Mister Delaware says:

The most beautiful recreation of Citizens Bank Park I’ve ever seen.

Mike says:

My question would be…

How much must that cost to keep all those high power lights on?

Cant be cheap, plus we are in a bit of a recession?

I like it, but come on seriously do we need to be wasteful?

Not trying to be the Debbie Downer…

Ben K. says:

The lights were on because A.J. and CC were there. The Bronx doesn’t frivolously bask in the glow of Yankee Stadium every night just because.

Ryan S. says:

I don’t think its a big deal at all, but I am curious how much kWh Yankee Stadium would use in a year. It’s gotta be like 5,000,000+ I bet.

T-Dizzle says:

i agree we need every last dollar for manny and tex but i dont think it would cost that much but still it cant help so yea i agree they should probably turn them off but its still really cool to look at though!

The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

Are you really Brett Marshall?

Come on, you’ve got to admit that some statements just SCREAM OUT for the facepalm, no matter how tired it gets…

The Honorable Congressman Mondesi says:

Sigh, I’m so misunderstood. :-(

I enjoy the facepalming you little scamps love so much. It’s just that humongous weird image that always gets posted that’s a little tired (and huge, and weird-looking).

Mike Pop says:

You need your mommy? Have her rub vaseline all over your hiney, tell you everythings gonna be alright?

whozat says:

HEY!!

Hey!

That is gross, and disgusting, and also ew.

It’s Balmex, not Vaseline.

I mean you bring the heat, dude.

Don’t worry about it. Just a lame joke.

Boston Matt says:

A few of the light banks are not turned on. That is why right field is pretty dark. We waste because we can, but they turned off about half of them at least.

desus says:

those lights are high efficiency light or something of that nature. I remember reading they use significantly less energy to power than other light but burn brighter. Go technology!

Man, it could be the lights being on and the other lights being off, but doesn’t the old stadium look small by comparison?

Brooklyn Ed says:

Shea Stadium looks like a ghost town now. :(

Mike Pop says:

I always liked going to Shea

kunaldo says:

Wow…it looks epic guys…and I can’t wait until the interlocking NY is lit up right in front of the main gate.

Tony S says:

The new stadium looks magestic.

Tony

Jeb says:

Ok, I really really love the look of the new Stadium. Wow it looks lovely at night, even with the burnt out “E”. The soft light from the interior of the facade (I suppose it’s the Great Hall) really grabs me. I think what I’ll miss about the old ballpark are subtleties. Things will look similar, but there will be little things that will be different. In particular, I’m going to miss the Bronx County Courthouse looming from above centerfield.
