A Varitekian musing from Rosenthal

In a rumors column early this week, Kenny R. engaged in some catcher-related speculation. He writes:

Here’s a sinister thought: Varitek to the Yankees. The chances probably are slim, but the Yankees need to add a catcher due to their uncertainty over Jorge Posada, who is recovering from shoulder surgery. Varitek, 36, might recoil at the notion of joining the Red Sox’s biggest rival, and the Yankees might prefer to spend on pitching. But because the Yankees already have signed three other Type-A free agents, Varitek would cost them only a fourth-round pick …

I like the idea of the Yanks’ picking up another front-line catcher, but I don’t like the idea of Varitek. It has nothing to do with his personality. While iYankees objected on personal grounds, my complaints are purely baseball-related. If the Yanks could stomach the arrivals of Wade Boggs, Johnny Damon and Rogers Clemens, to name a few, they could deal with having Jason Varitek on the team.

However, Jason Varitek isn’t very good anymore. He hit .220/.313/.359, and his 73 OPS+ placed him slightly ahead of Melky on the bottom of the AL OPS+ list. He’ll turn 37 a week after Opening Day and hasn’t ever been a great defensive catcher. It would be a waste of money and a waste of a roster spot. While Pudge and Varitek remain out there, the Yanks may be tempted to kick the tires on one of these two retreads, but in the end, they’re better off waiting on Posada.

It may only cost us a 4th round pick but it still gives them a supplemental pick. No fanks

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

    I’d rather resign Pudge. Seriously.

    • Ryan S.

Its not even a tough call in my mind. Pudge > Veritek … but that isn’t saying much.

      • AndrewYF

        I’d rather go with Molina/Cervelli.

        Or even Kelly Stinnet.

This is a case where we’d be better off if the player was on our rival’s team instead of ours.

I like having a few strikeouts a game in the Red Sox lineup, could come in handy.

Wow that is really sad. I didn’t hear about that. We met Sizemore and Kinsler at the All Star Game, both were great guys signing a few autographs for my nephew. I actually told Grady he has quite a hot fan club and he just laughed, shook his head and smirked

Must say…as much as I despise the Sux…I’ve always admired the way Varitek plays.
He hustles, he’s a team guy, and he hates losing.

If he’d be willing to accept being a true back-up…not the worst idea in the world.

    • Sweet Dick Willie

If he’d be willing to accept being a true back-up…not the worst idea in the world.

It may not be the worst idea in the WORLD, but as far as the Yankees are concerned, it’s probably the worst idea I’ve heard.

I mean seriously, you want to give the RS a 4th round pick and a supplemental pick so we have to put up with Varitek’s suckitude? Seriously?

Let me guess. You’re a RS fan and would rather see Varitek sucking for the Yanks than sucking for your team, right? I just can’t come up with a more logical answer.

  • Conan the Barack O’Brian

First and foremost, the Sox are the only team willing to overbid by as much as $5 million for Varitek. If the Yanks even sniffed in that general direction, the Sox would just replay their initial 1/10 bid, or something close.

Whatever the Sox are offering him now, I’m sure, is beyond his value and any rational Yankee play. So the Yanks don’t need to do anything but chuckle if Varitek ends up signing for his arb offer, b/c that just means the Sox were forced to be nice to him.

  • Jay CT… Ben Sheets biggest fan

My humble opinion; no to Varitek. He is a terrible hitter now, half the staff doesn’t need a catcher to teach them how to pitch, and we still have Posada to mentor the kids. All that, PLUS the fact that he is an asshole only is like adding dog shit on top of horse shit… Varitek is not worth it.

  • http://mvn.com/milb-yankees Eric

But he’s so gritty! And he calls a great game!

  • steve (different one)

i will submit a largely irrational no.

it makes a little bit of baseball sense, but i just don’t like the guy.

i’d rather bring back Matt Nokes. or even Nokes from the movie Sleepers.

    • pat

bullet holes and all, awesome awesome movie

    • http://thebronxzoo.wordpress.com iYankees

LOL at Nokes from Sleepers. Too funny.

My dislike for Varitek is certainly a subjective position. But, from an objective (the numbers) perspective, yes, as Ben stated he’s terrible in that regard, too. He can still call a good ballgame and knows the AL East inside and out, however, at this point I’d take Jose Molina’s defense over V-Tek’s any day.

    • Sweet Dick Willie

it makes a little bit of baseball sense,

Please explain, because I can’t come up with anything that would justify giving the RS a supplemental pick and a 4th rounder.

At this point of his career, I really think he is of more value to the Yanks being on the RS and sucking for them.

  • Ryan S.

The ever-knowledgeable and fair Rob Neyer of espn.com tackled this very subject a few days ago, and it was a good read (as his articles just about always are).
    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3846082&name=Neyer_Rob

My biggest question is, who the hell is worth looking at in the first place? If Pudge would take a 1 year deal for about $3M and accept being the 2nd or 3rd catcher on the depth chart, I think that would be fine … but that doesn’t seem likely at all. Really, is there anyone out there who would do a much better than Cervelli? That’s an honest question, I don’t know the answer.

Mauer 2011 is a change I can believe in but that’s so far away its not worth thinking about right now.

    • Mike Pop

I would make a trade for a young catcher other than bringing in any other FA this season. I’m not talking bout Salty or Teagarden but someone who is not as good. Maybe a catcher in AAA from some organization. Guy who’s got skills but he isn’t all that and a bag of fritos.

      • Ryan S.

        Matt Weiters for Kei Igawa.

        • 27 this year

          Throw in Kennedy + Melky

    • Jay CT… Ben Sheets biggest fan

Cervelli? Old Ranger will be posting shortly completely 100% agreeing with you. Of course, he would also promote the entire AA team because he has seen them with his own eyes and thats good enough for him!

      • Mike Pop

Old Ranger is the man though.

  • http://www.YouTube.com/kevyyankees Kevin G.

I don’t want Varitek anywhere near the Yankees team (unless they’re playing him). Why waste a pick(even a fourth round pick) on him?

    • Mike Pop

Your chances to pitch a no hitter goes up by 46%?

      • Peter Gammons

        It is actually, 46.1%

        • Jay CT… Ben Sheets biggest fan

Perhaps thats true, however Peter, how would the Sox make up for losing all that “grit.”

      • http://www.YouTube.com/kevyyankees Kevin G.

Show me the data and scouting report to back this up.

        • Ryan S.

maybe we need that “sarcasm alert” preface after all

            Fail.

        • http://www.youtube.com/kevyyankees Kevin G.

I forgot to add “sarcasm alert”

  • 27 this year

One question, do compensation rules count for minor league deals? I am not in any way saying get Varitek, just curious for future and other references. Molina is better defensively, not really worse with the bat, and our pitchers like Molina.

    • Jay CT… Ben Sheets biggest fan

Minor league contracts don’t count, however, the original team can file a grievance that Bud Selig would look into to decide if they are just signing the player to avoid the draft pick. Apparently, the way he decides is how much the player gets, how much the player plays, why the player plays, etc…

      • Jay CT… Ben Sheets biggest fan

Forgot to say, in which Selig then decides if the team should get the draft picks.

  • Lanny

why not at least engage him and make all of boston squirm?

u dont think he’d be pretty solid as a backup catcher and in the clubhouse and hurt bostons pitching staff at the same time?

    • Mike Pop

      Boston would rejoice not squirm.

    • Spaceman.Spiff

      i dont.

    • ryan

varitek a couple yrs ago maybe.

    • jimmy

I think they should entertain the thought not only to hear Btown go nuts but Max Kellermen might have a stroke right on the air

  • Reggie C.

    No. Way.

Theo is a genius draft picker. He’d probably land a Melvin Croussant like talent with that 4th round pick. Don’t chance it Cashman !!

  • Drew

Damon and Boggs were, are likeable. Varitek, not. I only wish A rod would’ve connected when he had him in a head lock.
