Ask Joba

Next Tuesday, Joba Chamberlain and Jon Lester are gathering for a talk and a Q-and-A at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut. Tickets are still available (info here), but we have a better offer than tickets. Long-time reader Jay CT has convinced MC Andrew Marchand to accept some questions from River Ave. Blues. So in this thread, post the question you would pose to Joba and Lester. We’ll gather them up, pick from the best and send them along to Marchand. Make them good, and make RAB proud.

  1. Mike Pop says:

Joba, will you be better than Lester?

  2. Steve H says:

Joba, do you belong in the bul………..

    I’ll stop.

  3. Bruno says:

How’s your shoulder feeling, and what are you looking forward to most about CC and AJ joining the Yankees?

  4. Paulie says:

Joba, what is your true feeling about the starter vs reliever issue? How do you feel about some of the people who have said that they think you should be in the bullpen?

Now I know he won’t actually answer these questions, he will say something to the effect of, “I will do whatever my team wants me to do.”

    • Peter Lacock says:

Just ask him if he got to decide which would HE pick. It’s hard to cop out. You know he’ll say starter.

Do you have any goals for this season and if so, what are are they?

Do you and Phil, or any other pitcher, have any kind of competition, any friendly wagers on who will have a better season?

What have you heard about Andy and if he doesn’t return do you think Cash will make a move, open a competition or does Phil already have a slot locked up?

Have any veterans offered you advice?

What is most important for you to be a successful pitcher?

      How’s your Dad?

When you go drinking, why don’t you hire a freaking driver? You make enough freakin’ money…. are you dumb?

  5. The Evil Empire says:

If you were the Yankees organization, where would you place Joba C.? In the rotation or in the pen?

  6. Steve H says:

Joba, should there be mandatory drug testing for anyone on earth who thinks you should be in the bullpen?

  7. VO says:

Do you look foward to hitting Youkilis?

Will you fight Joba if he hits Youkilis?

  8. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Joba, what have you learned from your recent DWI arrest?

  9. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Joba, what pitcher did you model yourself after or admire most when you were growing up?

  10. Manimal says:

Joba, how is your recent relationship with you mother?

  11. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Joba, is it just me or do most women from Nebraska resemble cows?

    • Darla says:

As a woman from Nebraska I take great offense to this comment! Get a new hobby besides bashing Nebraska people. I am so sick of the stereotypical comments made about the Midwest. You have way too much time on your hands if this is all you can come up with.

  12. Dude! I’m going! I’m excited!

So Jay from CT, say hi to me, okay? I’ll tell you what shirt I’m wearing when I decide what shirt I’m wearing.

Joba: How do you deal with the fact that you’ve had to grow up a lot faster than most other 23 year-olds out there?

Lester: Did the No hitter seem real or like a dream? When did you realize you were pitching something special?

  13. 27 this year says:

I think Mike, Joe, and Ben are not going to be pleased reading these questions…

  14. BigBlueAL says:

Joba, honestly, does anyone on the team actually like Arod????

  15. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Joba, you’ve lived in Nebraska all your life. Have you ever seen Bruce Springsteen step foot in Nebraska? The son of a bitch wrote an entire album named “Nebraska” and not a single person has ever seen him there.

  16. matt k says:

To each player. Wat is your favorite and least favorite thing about the opposing players city.

  17. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Serious question, what is it with you and Kevin Youkilis?

  18. Ed says:

Joba. Why do you feel that your shoulder beacame fatigued last season and what do you think that you can do this season to prevent it.

  19. Manimal says:

    I might go, don’t know.

  20. Mike Pop says:

Heh, I really should of gone to Sacred Heart this year.

  21. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Joba, I understand you have a 3 year old son named Karter.

What’s his fastball like and has Scott Boras called you about him yet?

  22. matt says:

Joba how much did it annoy you when the NY media made a big deal about your on the field celebrations, when you were just a 22 ? y/o kid coming into the big leagues on the biggest stage in the world dominating the competition and showing your excitement/ enthusiasm?

  23. pete says:

Lester: Do you think Joba belongs in the bullpen or the rotation? Also, how do you think incrementally increasing your yearly innings totals has affected your arm strength and endurance?

  24. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Joba, show Andrew Marchand how to throw the ball 101 MPH like you do.

  25. Jamal G. says:

Joba, to the next writer or analyst that suggests you should waste your awesomeness of a right arm in the bullpen, would you rather:

    a) Choke-slam them
    b) Perform a Stone Cold Stunner on them
    c) Deliver some Sweet Chin Music

  26. Chris says:

What’s it like growing up in the best baseball rivalry as friends? In the old days the two teams’ players hated each other but now we see laughs shared between Arod/Ortiz, Jeter/Pedroia, Joba/Lester.

  27. usty says:

Can we rip shots of Jager together and do donuts in the Yankee players lot after a game this year?

  28. usty says:

Do you shed a tear when you have to shave your badass offseason beard?

  29. jr says:

do you find johnny walker green to be smoother than johnny walker black?

  30. Steve S says:

Joba, I’m a bit confused. You see when I see you pitching in a secondary reference frame, while moving at .98c, the speed of your fastball seems different from that of a person standing still right next to you, in the Joba Chamberlain reference frame. Could you please explain Einstein’s special relativity and how you apply it to your everday life.

Jon, what’s ya favorite chowda – I think New England is wicked awesome.

  31. Currambayankees says:

What has the dui arrest taught you? Will you be ready to go as a starter this year?

  32. Steve S says:

Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he put on a dress and wig to fool Elmer Fudd?

    Me neither….just wondering

  33. Joba, what do you say to the people who want you in the bullpen?

  34. Christopher says:

What did Kevin Youkilis do to you that makes you throw at him?

  35. Joe says:

Joba, Did you use a designated driver to get here?

  36. Ryan S. says:

Do you expect to use your curveball more this season? Is it a pitch you feel comfortable you will be able to get outs with?

  37. Ellis says:

    To both pitchers,

Who has been the greatest mentor to you on your respective teams?

And, in all honesty – is it hard to be confident without being cocky, knowing that you are each quite possibly the most talented pitcher in your rotations?

  38. steve says:

i moved out of fairfield CT because it was boring as hell …. and now joba is visiting …. awesome.

  39. Mike R. says:

If Donald Duck never wears pants why does he tie a towel around his waist when he gets out of the shower?

    Question for both:

Not including your home field what are you favorite and least favorite places to pitch and why?

  40. Mike R. says:

What career would you have pursued had professional baseball not been an option?

  41. Drew says:

Joba, Have you trained differently this offseason compared to past years in college and you first pro year? And do you think you are prepared (barring Joba Rules) to pitch 200+ innings as any solid starter must do?

P.S. Can’t wait to see Youkillis on his A$$!!

  42. Bruce B says:

Joba, With your style of pitching, and your power, your fastball is dominant. Have you worked on perfecting your off speed pitch for the upcoming season?

    Good luck this season!

  43. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Joba, have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?

  44. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Joba, if crime fighters fight crime and fire fighters fight fire, what do freedom fighters fight?

  45. JeffG says:

Joba – Coming into the season prepared as a started, with the idea that you will be stretched out and ready to go once the season starts, have you given thought about how your approach to getting outs might change?

Joba – Last year you had to pitch most of your games to Molina. When you came up you were mostly lined up with Jorge. What would you say is the biggest difference in how they call a game? Does pitching to one or the other change your approach?

John – How do you think playing a full season without Manny Ramirez will affect your club, especially seeing you did not replace is bat with a guy like Teixeira?

John – In light of the play for Teixeira, how do you think Lowell is viewing his role on the team? Have you had a chance to speak with him?

  46. pat says:

Joba can you please explain to me just what the hell is going on in Lost? Time travel….seriously?
    Lester- losersayswhat?

  47. Axl says:

    For Joba:

Given the choice would you rather be a starter for the rest of your career or the heir to Mariano Rivera’s throne…

    For Lester:

Don’t sign an extension with Boston…you were a big Andy Pettitte fan…come to the Yankees to fulfill the dream!

  48. teixburnathia says:

Hey Joba got any good nicknames we could call you?

  49. Jays says:

Why do you aim at Youk’s head?
    Are you jealous?
