Free agents still an option for Yanks

I’m glad Baaahston resigned Varigay that’s 3-4 K’s a game for our Starters when we face them. Thanks Theo!

    • Steve O.

      4 NO HITTAZ!!!!!

    • jim

Boras pulled out all the stops to get this deal done.

The trick was resorting to dressing Varitek up like Mark Teixiera. It seemed to do the trick.

“Mr Henry , I present to you Mr Teixeira and he will sign for only 5 million as you have requested. We tried to bluff you , but in the end my client just could not resist the shops on Newbury street as you so shrewdly suspected.”

Gammons is reporting that there is an option for 2010, but that in order to secure that Tek and Boras to agree to a final humiliation.

A life size Scott Boras action figure will be installed in the office of John Henry and before all home games, Tek will have to report to the office and punch the Boras action figure in the nuts.

Judas Torre will be on Larry King Live at 9:00 tonight.

    • The Evil Empire

Would anyone like to see Torre apologize to A-Rod and the Yankees?

      • Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Not really. He’ll still be pocketing the 2 mil for the book, so that’s just empty rhetoric and an attempt to rebuild his tarnished image. If he was donating the book fee to charity, even his own “Safe at Home Foundation”, then that would be something to consider.

But I don’t need or expect an apology from him. Much of what I’ve read excerpted from the book has only confirmed the impressions I had of him already. That he played favorites with his players (so much for the team concept), didn’t coach or develop any young players, didn’t bother with stats and preferred his gut instinct over match ups, that he had a war brewing with the front office for the past 5 years and that he felt entitled to keep the Yankees manager job.

      • jim

No , I’d like to see the Yankees sign Manny and issue him number 6

    • christopher

st least now any part of me was sad to see him leave is gone. the david wells interview with Kay regarding the book was great. if you havent heard it, check it out on the ESPN radio website. vintage boomer

    • usty

Haha, the cable listing is “Joe Torre – Author”. He’s backtracking now…A-Rod is great, and he’s so great he changes a clubhouse.

    • The Evil Empire

Wow, Torre hasn’t spoken to Alex since 2007

  • The Evil Empire

    Let’s go D.R!!

  • christopher

It appears evident that there will be no manny or even dunn. At this point the only thing Cash MAY want to do is look to add some veteran bats to come off the bench. Possibly Alou to split time at DH with Matsui (that may hinge on whether nady or swisher is traded), or possibly nomar garciaparra who can still kill lefties and can play 1st, short, and third allowing them to rest some of their infielders without taking too much of a hit.

This is a good market to strengthen their bench cheaply. Still avaiable, if they dont retire, are guys like Floyd, Thomas, L. Gonzalez, and Millar. Not to mention wiggington who had a pretty good year last season, but may be looking for a full time guy.

Not suggesting they go crazy with money signing these guys, but if they can get them for low salaries they could help improve the bench.

    • The Evil Empire

Where’d you hear that first part at?

      • christopher

Cashman said that he is not planning on making any more major aquisitions, although I am still hoping he changes his mind

        • The Evil Empire

Cool, but where did Cashman speak at? What show?

    • Brian Cashman is watching

While the premise is good, the available players are not. Currently, if we do not count Ransom, the Yankees will have 12 position players on the 25 man roster (assuming both Gardner and Cabrera are on the roster). Typically, the Yankees carry 12 pitchers. With the team already carrying an extra outfielder/bat off the bench in Nady, the real need is for one more infielder. Reegie Corona might have been of some help, but his bat was likely not advanced enough. Wiggington is interesting, and is Garciaparra, but neither of them can play shortstop or second. Looking through the remaining free agents, the only one of interest that might play those positions is Ray Durham.

Luckily it is the backup utility player, so maybe Berroa turns into something useful.

  • Drew

What’s with the damn Cubans!! I guess it will be written in stone they’re White Sox? C’mon Cash make them an offer.

We wouldn’t touch alou wit a ten foot pole what u talkin about.

  • christopher

    Question for everyone

Would you rather have Nady, Swisher and Matsui (with swisher being a super-utility guy for the team dpelling Tex at 1st and the outfielders)

    or

    Matsui and Adam Dunn

    • Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

I’d rather have a 2 guys that can field a position rather than 2 DHs.

Especially when one of them is a bench player.

  • http://amonthoffundays.blogspot.com Phil in LA

They should give Adam Dunnn a contract with heavy rates incentives rather than a bunch of cumulative stuff. Reward his OPS regardless of play time.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

They can’t. MLB doesn’t allow bonuses based on individual stats like homers and batting average and OPS, just playing time (plate appearances, innings) and awards. That’s why A-Rod’s bonuses are awarded for “historic milestones.”

      • Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

I think most of A-Rod’s ‘bonuses’ aren’t even the traditional bonus where the team directly pays the player. It’s more of a business partnership on the marketing of each achievement, where they split the profit on each item sold 50-50.

Can’t wait to get my A-Rod 700 HR commemorative pin.

  • kunaldo

um, is the Beyond the Box Score on Adam Dunn link supposed to be a link to some pirates website about them resigning paul maholm? I’m confused

    • The Evil Empire

      saw that too

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

      My bad. It’s fixed now.

      • kunaldo

No worries, I just googled the post

  • A.D.

Tom Gordon to the d’backs… they’re really buying off the scrap heap

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

That’s a nice little pickup for them. No risk, easy to back out of. If he’s healthy, that gives them four guys capable of closing (Gordon, Qualls, Rauch, Pena).

  • http://amonthoffundays.blogspot.com Phil in LA

For a pitcher an inning pitched is a counting stat and that’s what Andy’s deal features.

    • whozat

It’s not a performance-based stat. All he has to do it go out there and get three outs somehow to log an inning. Yes, if he performs better in general, he will get to stay in games longer and consume more innings…but you’re splitting hairs.

The MLBPA is OK with incentives linked to innings, days on the roster, stuff like that. And BBWAA awards, for some reason. But not stats that are directly related to performance. That’s what they say; you want to argue, take it up with their lawyers :-)

If you get front office manager for pc do you need to download a program or anything? I had heard it was complicated.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

Only if you have a Mac. If you have a PC it should load right up.

    • Brian Cashman is watching

How well does it work for PC? I kind of want to get it, though the lack of updated rosters is a real problem for me.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

        I have no idea.

  • http://amonthoffundays.blogspot.com Phil in LA

I would argue that an ip is a unit of performance, since if you’re not performing you can’t get ip’s. Anyway, they really should get Dunn.

And Joe Torre’s eyes say he’s lying to Larry King!

    • usty

hahaha. Someone watches “Lie To Me”.

      • jim

that’s right .. look he’s scratching his neck

  • http://amonthoffundays.blogspot.com Phil in LA

Actually, I learned that from a detective a long time ago.

      • http://amonthoffundays.blogspot.com Phil in LA

        Who are you talking to?

  • Drew

Torre showed why we all love him. I think we should all hold judgements until we actually read the book. Go JOE!!

    • Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

      First he said. . .

“You have to include the good stuff and the bad stuff if you want to write an honest book”

      Then he said . .

“There’s nothing bad in this book”

Saint Joe has lost his halo in most people’s eyes, but some will keep on believing no matter what. Like the 25% who approved of the job Nixon was doing up to the day he resigned.

Hey guys, the pinch hitter blog post on LuHud right now is by me (yay!). I kind of told the LoHud commenters that they’re not the smartest commenters in the world. Check it out.

Okay so I picked up MLB FOM. And, I hate it. I DESPISE it.

I’d like it if the interface was better, and not for nothing, but The Show offers quite a lot of content. I’m trading this thing in tomorrow.
