Hockey coming soon to Yankee Stadium

Yanks will probably block Posada from WBC

Following the success of Jan. 1’s Winter Classic outdoor hockey match at Wrigley Field, the NHL would like to do it again. Unsurprisingly, the new Yankee Stadium is at the top of the league’s list for potential hosts. While this is a rather gimmicky game, the idea of the Rangers playing hockey outside in New York City at Yankee Stadium tickles me. It’s certainly cold enough in January, as we’ve learned over the last few days. Somehow, the Vegas Strip and the Rose Bowl are on the NHL’s short list as well. Hockey outside in Miami California (or Vegas) just doesn’t make sense. (Hat tip to the shell-of-its-former-self NJ.com.)

Vegas is in Nevada. The Rose Bowl is in California. Miami is in Florida! :p

My cats breath smells like catfood!

  • A.D.

For the strip or the Rose bowl, would they just blow money on energy to maintain ice for the game?

Is that that stupid lacrosse-looking crap they play on ice and always show on the Outdoor Life Network while I’m busy trying to watch reruns of Survivor, or the Premier League Darts championships?

        BORING…

        • GoTerpsGo

I’d rather watch hockey than American Idle.

heh… you can always count on a hockey fan to be passionately supportive of their team and league, that’s for sure.

Usually, also smelly and poorly groomed…

          And missing teeth.

Not that I think Rebecca is missing teeth or anything.

(Why is Firefox underlining Rebecca in red? Does it seriously not have the name in its database?)

No, but I’m presuming your level of hockey fandom has you with all of them still remaining.

              Right?

  • Boones19

It doesn’t need to be cold to have the event. While California could possibly be a little too warm, Vegas wouldn’t be at all. Winter temps in Vegas rarely get abou 70 this time of year. Also when they play hockey regularly indoors they don’t keep the arena freezing, it is kept between 64-68 degrees, so while Pasadena might be a bit warm…Vegas and NY certainly are plenty cold enough and there wouldn’t be any issues unless it rained.

    • A.D.

Only issue is they don’t have chillers built into the strip to maintain the ice, i’m sure they would just build up a rink, but there are more complications with Vegas, bringing in seating, etc.

  • jsbrendog

rangers habs yankee stadium. do it

    • UWS

      Rangers-HabsDevils or Islanders. Do it.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

Aw, you too? You win me over with your literary prowess, UWS, but you lose it all with the damn Devils. And Islanders? Ugh.

        • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

The Islanders… weren’t they the team with the Gorton’s Fisherman on the front of their jerseys? I’d suffer through hockey highlights on SportsCenter (while waiting for REAL sports) and get a sudden craving for fishsticks.

        • UWS

I don’t like the Islanders, just the Devs. And I suggested them purely in the spirit of the rivalry.

          • jsbrendog

there is no rivalry like an opriginal 6 team. the rangers canadiens rivalry is 80+ yrs old. the islanders are the worst team in hockey and no one cares about the devils. most ppl in nj stil think they play in the continental airlines arena

  • Rick in Boston

I think I heard EJ Hradek of ESPN comment on the big problem with doing the game in NYC: the NHL, sponsors or teams would have to pick up a big chunk of overtime for all the cops. Most of them are duty on New Year’s Eve, making it very difficult for them to turn around and work the game.

    • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

No big deal, they can afford it– oh, wait, you said the NHL? Nevermind, you’re right, they can’t afford it.

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

If it’s Rangers-Devils, I might have to sell my soul to go see it.

Which would make some sort of sense, being a Devils fan and all…

    • Nigel Bangs

man. that would be so awesome.

ironically, the only thing i would like to see more is say…a yankee game at the stadium.

      • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I got it: Yankees vs. Rangers. They play 3 innings of baseball, a period of hockey, and then run a marathon.

Ok, at least we can agree on the putridity of the Flyers. And the Islanders.

    Rose Bowl = California

  • Coach

Hockey is a real sport. Not to cause an argument, but you can’t tell me that your average baseball player is 1/3 the athlete your average hockey player is.

    • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I’m sure jai alai players are wicked good athletes as well, but I don’t want to watch them run around a jai alai court for three hours either. There’s a difference between athletic prowess and the desirability of watching said athletic prowess on display.

You know who else uses your “athlete” argument? The WNBA.

      • Raul

        Penguins vs Rangers

If you call yourself a sports fan, and you don’t want to watch Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin. Your a hypocrite.

Candace Parker is incredible. Don’t diss the WNBA

  • Coach

There is a large difference between playing a physical game of coordination and skill and having 10 women “run” up and down the court heaving 10 ft jumpers and cutting back door for lay ups.

I never understand why people dislike watching hockey that much, it isn’t that hard of a game to understand. Your average two plus hours of hockey has much more action than the comprable amount of time in most baseball games.
