Open Thread: Oh no he di’int!

By

“When you’re down, you expect your organization to pick you up, not kick you when you’re down,” Pavano said. “I’ve had to pick myself up quite a few times the last four years.”

Really? I mean … seriously?

I’m pretty sure Brian Cashman stood by this guy’s side all four years, constantly reminding everyone that all of his injuries were legit. Hell, he called him up this year when he could have just left him toiling away in the minors on a rehab assignment.

Give me a break Carl. When you stay healthy for two months, then you can think about running your mouth.

Here’s your open thread for the evening. The Nets are in Milwaukee, the Rangers in Buffalo. MLB Network is showing highlights if the 1996 World Series starting at 8pm. Talk about that, or whatever else you like, just be nice.

“kick you when you’re down” = paying you $384,615.38 bi-weekly, on 104 occasions, maybe one time you having earned it. i could really use a beat-down right now myself.

    Can’t believe Carl….

Well anyway I need some people’s advice. I am considering buying a ps3 (i have 360) mostly for mlb 09 the show. Lat year I was considering buying a ps3 for 08 the show but I laid off only to be upset by 2k8 which was somehow worse than 2k7. Now the issue comes up again I really would love to be able to finally play a baseball video game not name mlb 2k but I don’t know if buying a ps3 is worth it. Does anyone have mlb 08 the show for sp2, if so how is it? Well anyway right now if I do buy a ps3 it would really be for mlb 09 the show I don’t really know of any other games I would want (i like games like call of duty, fable, left for dead). So if you could help me decide if I should get a ps3 I would be really happy.

    • Eirias says:

I cannot wait for him to start against the Yankees.

    • Ol Dirtay says:

MLB `08 the show PS2 was awesome.

I personally own a 360 just because I feel that their library of games is far superior to the PS3. Also, I’ve found that developers are much more interested in doing downloadable content for the 360 as opposed to the PS3, particularly when it comes to companies like Valve (Left 4 Dead, Half-Life), Bethesda (Fallout 3) and 2K (Bioshock).

It sucks that “The Show” isn’t on 360 because it’s definitely the best baseball game since the old MVPs on PS2, but I wouldn’t recommend buying a PS3 solely because of that game.

  3. Bman says:

Hey Carl – when you pitch in Yankee Stadium come April we’ll be sure to let you know how WE feel too

  4. Mike A. says:

Lincecum is on Hot Stove Live right now. They showed a clip of him in Little League … same freaking delivery. Awesome. Just awesome.

  5. Conan the Barack O'Brian says:

Whatever Pavano says, this is just a welcome sight:
    http://cleveland.indians.mlb.c....._id=134321

it’s almost like we can forget.

  6. rbizzler says:

Pavano is a giant slob but the rest f his comments in the article are much more gracious. Once again, he is unequivocally guilty of stealing paychecks, but this one quote is really Pavano trying to endear himself to a new fanbase.

Be thankful that he is gone and that we will never have to endure another Glass Carl start again.

  7. Jamal G. says:

My disdain for Harold Reynolds grows every weeknight at 7:00 PM-EST.

    • Mike A. says:

      Livan Hernandez! Mark Mulder!

      • Jamal G. says:

“I think the numbers unfairly punish Tim Raines’ candidacy for the Hall of Fame”.

Now, I have no idea whether he’s right or wrong, but the mere fact that the principle of his statement is that what a guy did on the fucking field can be “unfairly” used to judge if he’s a Hall of Famer or not has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve heard in ages.

        • Sweet Dick Willie says:

has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve heard in ages.

You obviously didn’t see the comments on a thread earlier today where at least 2 different posters suggested that we sign Varitek. That is so far beyond dumb that I am unaware of a word in the English language that can adequately describe it.

        • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

He may be dumb as a stump, but I hear he’s smooth as hell with the ladies. So he’s got that going for himself.

          • Sweet Dick Willie says:

I also heard that he caddied for the Dalai Lama and in lieu of a tip, Lama told him that when he died, on his deathbed, he would receive total consciousness. So he’s also got that goin’ for himself, which is nice.

    • rbizzler says:

I agree. There was a time when I was a bit misty-eyed over Harold’s departure from BBTN. Listening to the garbage that he is spewing on the new network has made me rethink my fandom at earlier points in my life.

Was I that stupid (don’t answer) or has Harold jumped the shark (much more likely)?

      • steve (different one) says:

i think we all liked Reynolds b/c he seemed like the one guy on ESPN who wasn’t wearing a Sox jersey under his suit.

he’s been disappointing on the MLB network.

    • Ol Dirtay says:

Anyone have AT&T U-Verse? I don’t they carry the MLB channel which is very disappointing.

  8. Manimal says:

If the draft pick is what is blocking most teams from getting Juan Cruz, why don’t the yankees sign him and then trade him to the teams that want him? We could get a nice return.

  9. The Fallen Phoenix says:

Man, I love listening to Harold Reynolds, but he’s really trying to get Ken Tremendous and the other FJM writers back on the beat. Listening to the MLB Network break down the Hall of Fame credentials for Dawson and Rice…makes the ears bleed.

Dawson a step ahead of Tim Raines? Really?

Anyway, I myself have defended Carl Pavano on numerous occasions – but yeah, I think he crossed a line here.

  10. justin says:

    Funny Anecdote:

A week before Pavano was shut down in 06′ with Elbow problems I shook his hand at Starbucks in Boston. My friend’s and I joke that I ruined his pitching arm…I hope that I did. What a douche.

  11. J.R. says:

Mussina called him out and was dead right.

  12. ryan says:

His career is over anyways ….lets see the indians pick him up when he’s down and needs a tissue.

    • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Don’t be so sure. If he can stay on the field, he’ll win some games for them. He knows how to pitch, he could win 15 if he stays healthy.

Carl might be one of the only guys in Baseball where after all the time he spent on the DL it WOULDN’T be a feel good story if he came back and did well. It would just confirm what a shmuck he is.

  13. BigBlueAL says:

MLB Network should just have Al Leiter as their analyst every night. Harold Reynolds (who I have hated since his 1st year on ESPN), Joe Magrane, Mitch Williams, and Barry Larkin have been BRUTAL.

I say hire Kevin Millar, he has been pretty good. Just use Leiter and Verducci, the rest of the guys are pretty bad. Hosts have been good so far at least.

    • Jamal G. says:

Heh, Kevin Millar has appeared to be “pretty good” because he’s so lost that he can’t even offer an opinion. But yeah, I do agree, the talent outside of those you mentioned fucking suck.

      • BigBlueAL says:

Hey, when stupid-ass Magrane was saying that Fenway actually hurt Jim Rice because it took away 50 HR’s Millar actually mentioned how much higher a BA Rice had at home compared to the road.

Absolutely INSANE for an analyst to say Fenway actually hurt Jim Rice when his entire offensive resume is based on his numbers at home.

    • greg says:

I just constantly yell at the TV when watching the MLB network, I disagree with 90% of what they say.

  14. Jamal G. says:

Wow, that walk-through on Tim Lincecum’s delivery was fucking awesome.

  15. Bill M. says:

SCREW CARL PAVANO!!!!!!!!!! (I think that says it all).

  16. rbizzler says:

Is it wrong of me to want Gammons to be incapacitated to the point that I never have to see/hear/read anything he has to say about baseball again? I know that this has nothing to do with the MLB network, but his chat on boston.com, where he essentially alleges that Penny is as good a bet to perform well as AJ, is a giant pile of homer bullshit. Very similar to the nonsense that he has been spewing all offseason on the WWL.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Actually wasnt a chat, that was a transcript of his interview on a radio station in Boston. Hey for me growing up when the internet became big in the mid-90′s Gammons’ Sunday column in the Boston Globe plus all the stuff he wrote on ESPN.com at the time was MUST READS. One reason I have never ripped him is because during all the Yankees titles in the late 90′s into 2000 he was always praising them and never once took ill-advised shots at them. You will find no bigger fan of Derek Jeter than Gammons, and thats enough for me.

      • Steve H says:

No there was a chat today where he said the same nonsense. If Penny was a free agent after 2007 he would have gotten a Burnett like contract, etc. Considering he’s the greatest baseball writer of all time, he is aware that the NL West is by far the best division in MLB for a pitcher, and the AL East is the worst right? Does he get that?

  17. BigBlueAL says:

For all you young people who barely remember the 1996 Yankees (cant believe how young some of you guys are!!!) watch the highlight film at 8. I saw it so many times when the video came out I have it memorized.

    • Mike A. says:

Ah yes, the days of John Wetteland. Back when the Yanks had a closer that gave you a heart attack before nailing down a save.

    • Jamal G. says:

Yeah, I don’t remember one second of that season. I think my earliest memories go back to the 2000 season.

      • BigBlueAL says:

Man you have to see all the WS videos then from 1996, 1998-2000!!!! Got em all on DVD and periodically will watch just to bring a smile to my face.

      • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Poor you. 1996 was by far the most special of the late 90′s group. Most of the core players from the run say the same.

It was something they were building towards for a few years, they got screwed in 94 by the strike, they were one of the best teams in baseball that year and headed for their 1st playoff berth since 1981. They had the amazing September run in 1995 and made the playoffs, only to be bounced in that crazy series vs Seattle. In 1996, they were OVERWHELMING underdogs to the Barves, and after Game 2 there were reports of Braves players celebrating and joking about having the series wrapped up. Down 6-0 in Game 4, Jim Leyritz with the game tying HR, Andy pitching the game of his life against Maddux at his best, Wade Boggs on the horse. . . . . wow. I still get misty just thinking about it.

First WS title since 1978 (18 years) and I’m old enough to have see both. That was very, very special.

  18. Jamal G. says:

David Price doesn’t think anyone can handle his stuff? Heh, that dude better take a second and rethink that: http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.....9143474363

  19. Ken O'C says:

How would you compare the 2008 off season to 2003. Which one was better?

    IN:
    Sheff
    AROD
    Kevin Brown
    Vasquez

    Out:
    Clemens
    Petitte
    Wells

    In (so far):
    CC
    AJ
    Tex

    Out:
    Mussina
    Abreu
    Giambi
    Petitte (maybe ?)

    • BigBlueAL says:

This one by far. People underestimated the amount of the pitching the Yankees lost in that 2003 off-season. The Yankees have actually improved their team this off-season BOTH offensively and pitching-wise. In the 2003 off-season they improved their offense and bench immensely but they downgraded their pitching staff.

    • Manimal says:

      Dont forget Swish.

    • The Fallen Phoenix says:

Honestly, at the time, I think the 2003 offseason was just…absurd. You pick up one of the best young pitchers (Vasquez) and extend him to a reasonable deal, and you get the best position player in baseball (A-Rod) at a subsidy.

That said, I think the 2008 acquisitions are better upgrades, considering what was lost. Teixeira is a HUGE upgrade on Giambi, tactically (being a switch-hitter), in youth (ten years younger), and defensively. As good as Vasquez was, CC is better, only cost dollars, and is left-handed. A.J. has better stuff than Brown, although Brown was coming off a really impressive season in 2003, and didn’t cost much in terms of talent.

      • The Fallen Phoenix says:

When I say considering what was lost, I mean in terms of outgoing talent, both in trades (Nick Johnson, Juan Rivera, Jeff Weaver, Alfonso Soriano vs. Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez) and in free agents walking (Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens, David Wells vs. Andy Pettitte, Mike Mussina, Jason Giambi, Bobby Abreu). I think the 2003 offseason saw better, younger talent leaving the organization, even if what was coming in offset that (and I think it really did, all things considered).

I mean, outside of maybe Mussina – who was at the tail-end of his career anyway – what have the Yankees really lost this season? Sure, Abreu was solid offensively, but he gave back all that value with his glove. Ditto Giambi.

    • Mike A. says:

That’s tough. I think I’ll with ’08 because of the far superior pitching. Grant, when they acquired him Javy was a stud, but CC is still better and AJ now > Brown then based almost entirely on age. A-Rod > Tex, and I don’t think Sheff’s enough to make up the difference.

Plus two of the players they picked up in ’03 were well into their 30′s.

    • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Lets hope this year goes better than 2004.

  20. Manimal says:

I just tried to replicate Lincecum’s delivery and I stubbed my toe SO BAD. Thats karma I guess.

  21. mustang says:

Pavano is joke. I’m sure he had no problems picking up his check every two weeks for doing NOTHING.

I can’t wait until they KO his ass of mound.
I mean really that guy has some set of balls.

  22. Thirty5Thirty6 says:

I love MLBTraderumors.com, BUT does anyone else want to shake the people that comment on that site? I just don’t think I can read the comments anymore.

  23. BigBlueAL says:

Best video ever starting on MLB Network baby!!!!

  24. BigBlueAL says:

I remember excited as hell that the Cardinals were going to beat the Braves making it easier for the Yankees in the WS.

  25. Jamal G. says:

Jeez, Jeter’s ranged even sucked balls in 1996. ;)

  26. Jamal G. says:

Heh, was that Tim Raines that got plunked by the catcher’s mask? That’s just not right.

  27. BigBlueAL says:

Always funny seeing Raines getting drilled in the nuts by that mask.

  28. Jamal G. says:

Damn, how scared do you think Hank Aaron was seeing two white dudes rush onto the field during his Home Run trot (when you think of all the death threats he received)?

    • BigBlueAL says:

I remember on the Costas Now special with him and Mays Aaron said those 2 guys became lawyers or doctors or something successful.

  29. Nady Nation says:

God this 96 special is so awesome.

  30. BigBlueAL says:

Ill admit, I thought Yankees were done after Game 2.

  31. BigBlueAL says:

82 pitcher and they wouldnt let Maddux pitch the 9th with a 4-0 lead!!

  32. Mike says:

I can’t wait until the Yankees play the Indians this year.

    • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

I wish I could agree with you, but I honestly don’t give a rat’s fat ass about Carl one way or another.

  33. Jamal G. says:

The Braves are so dumb. John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine in the ninth, eighth and seventh innings, respectively, would’ve resulted in about eight titles during that 14-year run.

    • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

With that rotation, if they had a closer they would have won at least 2 more titles. Not that it should have been one of them, but Sheurholtz should have spent a few bucks on one, or in hindsight maybe even made Avery a closer from Day 1. Might have extended his career.

  34. BigBlueAL says:

Well I wont be watching next Friday night. I wanna see WS films from like the 70′s and 80′s, even early 90′s. WTF 2005 lets be serious. Plus they have shown the Red Sox 2004 also. I want me some old-school damnit!!!!

  35. Nady Nation says:

Darryl, Big Daddy, and Charlie Hayes. That’s a fuckin bench right there.

  36. Macphisto says:

Did you guys see Bondy’s blog on the Daily News? Here is a snip from it:

    Beware the Perfect Yankee

“I always get a bit wary when I read or hear things about how a player was born to be a Yankee, or how he is made for pinstripes, or how he is a throwback to another era in the Bronx.
Because we all know these are code words for: The guy is white! That’s what I kept reading about Mark Teixeira, after his introductory press conference. The Perfect Yankee. Somehow I didn’t read anything like that about CC Sabathia, even though his numbers are every bit as impressive.”

I am surprised it made it past the editor.

  37. BigBlueAL says:

Torre went all out with those moves. Although Oneil wasnt 100% at the time and Boggs was AWFUL in the post-season that season. Benching Tino for Cecil though was a no-brainer. Tino was in the midst of the first of many horrible post-seasons.

  38. Yankeegirl49 says:

I love watching this stuff..I must have seen this video a hundred times and I still get pissed after game 2!!!!

As for Pavano…F**K him, I hope his arm falls off. I have never hated a Yankee the way I hate him (tho Kenny Rogers is close)!

  39. Jamal G. says:

So, anyone wanna join me alongside the Chipper Jones-for-the-2010-designated-hitter bandwagon?

  40. Jake H says:

    Pavano sucks.

  41. BigBlueAL says:

Still pissed at that call on Klesko!! Shouldve run him up!!

  42. BigBlueAL says:

Kenny Rogers started Game 4 in all 3 series that year and didnt get out of the 4th inning in any of them and the Yankees still won all 3 games he started.

  43. Jamal G. says:

Heh, you know how bad Kenny Rogers was as a Yankee? I, being 19-years-old, have not one iota of any memories of Rogers pitching for the Yankees, but my instincts tell me to despise that fool.

  44. Dave says:

I hope Carl starts the first game on opening day against the yanks and jonny lines the first pitch right at his mouth. Maybe then he will learn to shut up. Not only was carl a complete joke in his four years spent “in New York” (even though he rarely spent a day in NY) but he also made the organization look like a complete joke for signing him to a four year deal. He was possibly the worst signing in yankees history and he has the nerve to say he was unfairly treated. We gave you 40 million dollars Carl not even 1 of which you actually deserved – No one has received better treatment for doing less in the world.

    • Jamal G. says:

I hope Carl starts the first game on opening day against the yanks and jonny lines the first pitch right at his mouth. Maybe then he will learn to shut up.

As fucked up as that is, I couldn’t stop laughing.

  45. BigBlueAL says:

Denny Neagle. When the Yankees got him in 2000 everyone was excited. Believe he won his first 2 starts and even completed one of those starts, but all of a sudden he sucked the rest of the season. Torre didnt even start him in the ALDS instead using Clemens and Pettitte on short rest in Game 4 and 5 (both sucked but at least Yankees pulled out Game 5) and Neagle lost both starts in the ALCS vs Seattle (only games Seattle won that series).

Of course he was pulled with a 3-2 lead with 2 outs in the 5th inning vs the Mets so Coney could face Piazza who had homered earlier in the game. Screw Denny Neagle!! (although I assume Rockies fans hate him more)

  46. BigBlueAL says:

    Long Live the King!!!!

  47. BigBlueAL says:

Forgot how horrible Bobby Cox managed Game 4.

  48. Wow, what a douche Pavano is. I am ashamed to have gone to the same HS and live on the same street as his parents.

  49. greg says:

This game on MLB Network is making me remember how much I love Pettitte and hope he takes the 10 million offer that really seems fair for both sides.

  50. Mike A. says:

Man, watching this video is making me miss the good Andy Pettitte.

  51. Greg G. says:

You’re all making me really jealous that I don’t have the MLB Network. It’s like a game thread, and I’m trying to comment while not watching the game…

  52. Jamal G. says:

Damn, kid, I got pumped just watching Joe Girardi ferociously round second base to get that triple.

    • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

He was a better hitter than he admits, since he was known for his defense and handling the pitching staff.

    • Greg G. says:

Watching that triple was one of my favorite moments as a Yankee fan. At that moment, I thought “Holy shit, we’re actually gonna win this thing!”

Then again, I also thought that when Soriano hit the HR off Schilling in 2001, so maybe I’ll just shut up now.

  53. Mike A. says:

    Gold Glove defense by O’Neill.

  54. Mike A. says:

Melky’s x-rays were negative, if anyone cares.

  55. Mike A. says:

That’s one thing about that WS. Weathers and Lloyd were money, even though they sucked in the regular season.

    • Greg G. says:

I read Joe Torre’s autobiography (don’t ask), and apparently Don Zimmer had this to say to Torre about Fred McGriff: “He’s gonna see that big lefty [Lloyd] in his sleep.”

      • BigBlueAL says:

Isnt he supposed to have a new book coming out called the Yankees Years written by Tom Verducci???? Should be out next month I believe.

        • Greg G. says:

Really? Interesting. I bought the one he wrote after the ’96 season cause it was such a great story, and I just wanted to soak that year in again and again.

I know Torre gets a bad rap on the blogosphere (some of it warranted, to be sure), but I found some of his observations on leadership and managing to be quite interesting. Now that I have a “real” job (I was in school when I read the book), I look back on some of his observations as compelling.

  56. Jamal G. says:

Ooooh, tomorrow they are showing Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS; awesomeness. Hey, Carlos Beltran, you can stop waiting, no Fastball is coming for you.

  57. Mike A. says:

Bah. No range to his left.

  58. Jamal G. says:

Wow, fuck the Braves for not even attempting to help out Charlie Hayes.

  59. Mike A. says:

    Those were the days, huh?

  60. Jamal G. says:

LeBron and the Cavs are involved in a good one with Bahstan on ESPN.

  61. Manimal says:

You think arod sees these sort of videos? They are definitely motivating.

  62. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TAwYgQOn6o

Not sure I agree with the rankings, but whatever. Carl is #1 IMO.

    • Greg G. says:

Yeah, I don’t think Karsay should be that high. Certainly not ahead of Steve Trout.

Brown vs. Pavano does make for an interesting “duel” at the top.

      • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Yeah, I mean Trout barely pitched for the Yanks and George wound up going to the commish to try to get the deal annulled. That’s a total fiasco.

This might be going too far back, but Eddie Lee Whitson belongs on that list as well.

    • Jack says:

Where’s Ruth? B-Ref says he pitched 4 games in 15 years for the Yanks. If that’s not a bust, I don’t know what is.

  63. UWS says:

NY Rangers: 44 shots on goal, lose 2-1. FAIL.

  64. Dave says:

Im having trouble finding that harang and nady article. Was that something that was made up here or did you find that info somewhere else and write about it here?

  65. Rome says:

Did anyone see Flip Bondy’s blog on the Daily News where he says the fans and media calling Teixeira a “perfect Yankee” is code for Tex being white? Wow. Bondy must be bored out of his mind to be writing stuff like that. Don’t get it.
Watching my Tivo of the ’96 highlights. I miss Joe T.

    • AndrewYF says:

“Because we all know these are code words for: The guy is white! That’s what I kept reading about Mark Teixeira, after his introductory press conference. The Perfect Yankee. Somehow I didn’t read anything like that about CC Sabathia, even though his numbers are every bit as impressive.

I’m not saying this is overt racism. I get that Teixeira is a standup guy, and that he appears anxious to play in New York. But I also know that we must be on guard against a dangerous strain of nostalgia that romanticizes the days when the Yankees and other clubs were virtually all white.”

Yeah, I don’t get it. This would be more relevant if he had signed with Boston, as they seem to be getting rid of each and every one of their minority players. With their history, and the current situation of their fanbase, I find that a little bit curious.

  66. crapmaster general says:

first post on this site ever (but I read this thing faithfully daily!) – after watching the highlights from game 4, I remember getting to my morning college class the next day, and random guys – including myself – were running up to each other screaming “that was the best effing game I ever saw!!!” for like a solid hour. looking back, I still feel the same way.

though the footage they showed tonight of rock raines getting clipped in the nuts with that catcher’s mask was news to me. wow, I would be furious about that for years.

  67. Reggie C. says:

I’m just glad DJ isn’t the only brotha on the team now.

  68. GG says:

Moose needs to come back on a one year deal

  69. [...] Lost in the hoopla of the last week was a very brief note at the end of a Newsday article. The Yankees are going to have Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner fight it out for the center field job during Spring Training. Interestingly, this news seems to confirm that Johnny Damon and Nick Swisher probably won’t be in the mix for that job if all things go according to plan. Melky, by the way, had x-rays after getting hit by a Daniel Cabrera pitch on Thursday. They came back negative. [...]

  70. ortforshort says:

Melky or Gardner in center this year. Guarantees an automatic out in the nine spot this season.

  71. ortforshort says:

Pavano is a real loser – blaming everyone but himself. Should have done a better character check before signing this bozo.

  72. AD says:
