Awful Announcing has a look at national baseball games on FOX Saturday and ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. SNB only runs through July, when (I think) ESPN can take a game of its choosing. The only time we see our Yanks is when they’re in Boston on April 26. On the FOX side, they’ll have April 18, when Cleveland is in town, April 25 at Fenway, May 23rd with the Phillies at the Stadium, June 13th with the Mets at home, July 11th in L.A. against Mark Teixeira‘s former team, August 1 with the White Sox in town, August 8 with Boston visiting, and August 22 up in Beantown. Honestly, the less the Yanks are on these national broadcasts (considering the putrid commentating tandems), the better.

This would be an interesting poll:

During the subway series, do you watch on YES (Michael kay et al) or SNY (Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, Gary Cohen)?

To me the choice is clear. No one beats the Mets booth.

I’d be interested to see how many yanks fans watch on SNY

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I usually follow on SNY, although sometimes Cohen can be a little too homerish.

      • Sweet Dick Willie

Sometimes? SOMETIMES? Whenever I see him, which admittedly isn’t too often, he could make The Scooter sound downright impartial.

    • Should be working

      YES

      • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=43434432275 Ace

Why? Because Michael Kay is so good?

        • Should be working

          Better picture quality.

        • Should be working

And Kay isnt the only one on YES.

    • Tom Zig

I mean as much as Michael Kay is a c*ck smooches every guest announcer who is a former player, I still watch YES

      • http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_postseason.jsp?c_id=nyy&playerID=121250&statType=2 Slugger27 Back From Hiatus

i hate kay… but id still take him over morgan/miller/phillips… i just think hes too opinionated to be a play by play guy

plus ill forever remember that meltdown he had with some viewer about the no hitter on his radio show… i wish i had the link… but with his opinions and yelling and being defensive over things, i just dont think hes the best man for the job

        • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=43434432275 Ace

I agree. Ken Singleton should be main guy.

          • jsbrendog

            ken singleton is awesome

            • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

And he should be a Hall of Famer, just like Jim Rice.

          • jsbrendog

ps i thin it should be coney and singleton. i like them the best. personallly i cant stand leiter or flaherty

            • http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_postseason.jsp?c_id=nyy&playerID=121250&statType=2 Slugger27 Back From Hiatus

im all about coney… does anyone know if flaherty will be on this year?

            • whozat

What’s wrong with Leiter? I like him. He picks his words more carefully than cone, but he’s full of interesting knowledge. I don’t like when Kay plies him with questions about when he used to be a player, but that’s Kay’s doing.

              • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=43434432275 Ace

I prefer Singleton and Paul ONeill. I like the attitude that ONeill brings to the table. I don’t mind Leiter. I like him because he makes fun of Kay and disagrees with things Kay says. Cone is OK but he doesnt have a great broadcasting voice, if that makes sense. Flaherty is flat and I could do without him altogether. it’s hard to listen to someone who has no sense of humor, no attitude and is a career .252 hitter.

              • http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_postseason.jsp?c_id=nyy&playerID=121250&statType=2 Slugger27 Back From Hiatus

im with u, i love both of them… cone strikes me as more edgy, but i dont mind that… i find both insightful and tend to enjoy their announcing over anyone elses

        • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=43434432275 Ace

Here is a transcript of Kay’s meltdown. What a jerk.

“i doubt there is any god sometimes cuz of the way the world works”… how can any professional baseball commentator say that on the air and believe theres nothing wrong with it??

anyway, everyone makes mistakes, and im not here to harp on that one incident from kay… but the bottom line is, hes just way too opinionated and defensive to be a play by play guy

ps i LOVE your singleton suggestion

            • Lissette

              Anger management much?????

    • BklynJT

YES because i will NOT support the METS revenue streams!

  • AMS223

literally its unreal you just posted this. 10 mins ago i was wondering this and googled it and was reading it after i finished i came back here and boom it was there…unreal

i find it very surprising that there isnt a sunday night game scheduled. I do not care that much, but you would think that ESPN would want to cover the first year at the new stadium and at least do the opening weekend against cleveland….its a great thing not listening to steve phillips tho

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

I’m figuring the Yanks will get plenty of Sunday night attention in the second half should they be out in front or in contention for the division.

      • AMS223

yea for sure…but you would think also the 5/24 game against philly wouldve gotten a sunday night game over Mil vs Min

        • Chris

Maybe Bud Selig wanted to watch the Brewers…

  • jsbrendog

too bad bob costas doesnt od baseball anymore. i loved him doing the 96 series. he is a great announcer of anything

  • Joe Morgan

What? I am not a good announcer?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

Ok, you’re a regular so I won’t get pissy or anything. But we are no longer doing the “impersonate a celebrity” meme. It’s dead. Please stop.

      • Tom Zig

        hah, sorry about that.

      • http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_postseason.jsp?c_id=nyy&playerID=121250&statType=2 Slugger27 Back From Hiatus

        meme is a funny word

        • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

          Tubelcaine.

    • jsbrendog

look at that horse. i think its dead. and that man is beating it!

    • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

The meme itself is lame, but in addition, why even bother if you’re not going to say something that Joe Morgan himself would say? If you’re going to make such a lazy joke at least try to make it humorous for some reason other than the simple act of typing “Joe Morgan” into the “Name” field.

      • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_kaufman

Kaufman first caught major attention with a character known as “Foreign Man.” Foreign Man, who claimed to be from “Caspiar”, would appear on the stage of comedy clubs and lip-synch one line — “Here I come to save the day” — while playing a recording with the theme from “Mighty Mouse,” tell a few jokes (poorly), and perform a number of lackluster impersonations (Archie Bunker, Richard Nixon, etc.)…

He might speak in a fake accent, and say “I would like to imitate Meester Carter, de President of de United States.” He would continue in the same voice, “Hello, I am Meester Carter, de President of de United States. T’ank you veddy much.” The audience would be torn between outrage at seeing such a bad act, and sympathy for the hapless entertainer, who would cry on stage once heckled enough.

At that point, Foreign Man would announce “And now I would like to imitate the Elvis Presley,” turn around, take off his jacket, slick his hair back, and launch into an Elvis Presley impersonation so good that Elvis Presley himself described it as his favorite… After the wild applause that almost always came after his Elvis impression, he would take a simple bow and say in his “Foreign Man” voice, “T’ank you veddy much!” The audience would realize they had been tricked, which became a trademark of Kaufman’s comedy.

        • pat

That guy Kaufman or whatever sounds like a Borat ripoff.

        • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

Touche. That comment’s high-art flew right over my head.

        • Ryan S.

TSJC, I’m not surprised that you’re a Kaufman fan. That man is a genius. I think one of my favorite bits that he did was when he played a talkshow host, but his desk was about 5 feet off the ground and he would talk down to his guests.

  • Januz

I find it interesting that the Yankees and Sox are on national TV, only nine times each this season (And NONE against the Rays)., and the Mets are on 10. In addition, you would think that ESPN would like to do games at the new stadium? Of course, I will not be crying over NOT hearing Phillips, Morgan, and Miller.

    • Tom Zig

The Red Sox are played simultaneously on ESPN and NESN and sometimes FOX (even when playing the pirates)

    • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

That’s because the Mets are mortal locks to win it all now that they’ve solved the only problem in baseball that truly matters: who to pitch in the 8th and 9th innings.

  • http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_postseason.jsp?c_id=nyy&playerID=121250&statType=2 Slugger27 Back From Hiatus

id watch on yes even if they were on espn more… steve phillips got added to the crew… YIKES

and im not a joe buck fan… but i like mccarver more than most ppl on here seem to… either way, i dont think its a big deal…. id rather listen to cone/leiter than any of them anyway

  • http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_postseason.jsp?c_id=nyy&playerID=121250&statType=2 Slugger27 Back From Hiatus

hey joe does espn cherry pick all the sunday night games it wants… or is there some sort on contractual obligation with teams… or is there a quota with teams they have to meet?… how does all that work??

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

I’m not sure of the nuances of their agreement, but in the second half they’re allowed to pick their Sunday night games. I can’t speak to knowledge of any quotas.

  • Drew

What about Mlb network? Won’t they be broadcasting some games?

    • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=43434432275 Ace

      Good question.

      • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

And a good response would be (1) an attempt to answer said question or (2) no response at all.

MLB Network will broadcast one game a week, I believe on Thursday nights.

        • pat

Congressman you are quite ornery today. Rejoice for it is friday and you have a 40 point lead in preliminary polls for your re-election.

          • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

I know, right? Angry Mondesi today for some reason. My bad.

I would have gone with http://www.google.com

        • Chris

If they broadcast a Yankees game (for example) does YES lose that game?

  • Tom Zig

Rob Neyer has an interesting article about Varitek’s “game calling ability”

  • Lissette

If YES has 128 yankee games, and SNB and Fox have 9, where are all the other games going to be showed?

    • http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?id=594331910&ref=name Jamal G.

      MY9.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

DAMNIT, WHO PUT A QUESTION MARK ON THE TELEPROMPTER?

        • jsbrendog

you know ron will read anything you put on there. and i mean ANyTHING!

  • J Kap

Mets have a budgeted simple cast, hernandez sucks. SNY is cool for sports, but it’s not better than YES. Ken Singleton is probably the better one on the air for YES, R.I.P. Bobby Murcer.

  • J Kap

My 9 hosts Friday night Yankee Games to answer that question abotu what other channel they are on.

    • The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

“Reply to this comment” link in the bottom right corner of each comment-box.

      (Head expoldes)

  • MattG

“Honestly, the less the Yanks are on these national broadcasts (considering the putrid commentating tandems), the better.”

Not for me, dude. I am in PA, and I don’t have YES.

Odd thought–could RAB start a little slingbox service that only shows YES, for people like me? I would pay a few bucks a month for something like that. I’m not sure how slingbox works, so I don’t know if its possible.

    • steve (different one)

      how much is MLB.TV?

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

$120 for the year. I get it every year. Absolutely superb.

  • Mike R.

Speak for yourself on the national broadcasts. I jive in Texas! I can only see them on FOX or on ESPN. :(

  • MattG

$14.95 a month, the quality is shit, its frequently overloaded so you can have trouble getting on, and you get only the game–no pre or post, or anything else.

The extra innings package is $180 here, but will be blacked out always on Saturday and sometimes on Wednesday, does not have every game (the season I had it they never showed the Yankees on Friday. Might’ve been a lent thing), and also shows only the game.

Seriously, if someone could setup a cable service, figure out how to prevent the channel from being changed, and figure out how to allow multiple people to access it through slingbox, they could make some coin.

    • MattG

Oops, sorry–meant to respond to the different steve.

See, Mike R will pay you too!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

      “they could make some coin.”

And then probably spend some time in jail.

      • MattG

Is that right? I don’t think so–If I purchase my own slingbox, and sent it up there, that would be perfectly legal for everyone involved.

So the only question would be does Slingbox have some sort of single-user license, and if they do, is there a way to get around it legally.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

I deal a lot with intellectual property law (both with work and as a personal fascination). Broadcasting television for free to unlicensed users is illegal, no two ways about it. Slingbox might make it easy, and possibly undetectable, to perform this task, but that doesn’t make it more legal.

I’ve talked to the guys at Slingbox about this issue. There are ways you can do it, but to do it for multiple users seems a bit shady to say the least.

          • MattG

So you are saying that if I live in a region where no provider carries YES it is illegal for me to watch YES, even if I have a friend install a slingbox?

Slingbox is only legal if you are the subscriber of the TV service you are re-broadcasting?

            • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Yes. The moment you start having multiple people viewing the broadcast, you need the famous ol’ “express written consent” of Major League Baseball.

I don’t own a Slingbox, but I’m sure it comes with a disclaimer of some sort stating that only the owner of the Slingbox is legally entiled to view the Slingbox rebroadcast.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

Yes. That is exactly what I’m saying. MLB either threatened legal action or sued Slingbox for just this issue.

To answer your second question, yes. You have to be the subscriber, legally. I doubt they’d have an easy time catching someone who hooked up to, say, their parents TV, but that doesn’t make it any more legal.

              • MattG

That would explain why YES isn’t streaming their broadcasts.

After this generation of lawyers dies out, things are going to be different around here.

  • ramadan

my9 games air on Tuesdays this year

    • pat

No shit really? Thats awesome. As one of the few people on this earth that still has analog tv (and no converter box yet :( ) I used to only be able to watch games Friday which sucked bc friday is get drunk somewhere night. Tuesdays is a much better night. Woop Woop

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph P.

I miss the days of “get ridiculously drunk on Tuesday nights”.

        • pat

Ugh I know man I never realized how out of touch we were in college when any night could (de)evolve into ‘get ridiculously drunk night”. That ish just doesnt fly anymore. sadface.

        • jsbrendog

you have no idea how much i miss blackout tuesdays. they were epic weekly. (except for when we had blackout bbq and cooked a bunch of chcken and burgers on a griddle and some veggies on a hot plate in the dorm…..and then got ridiculously drunk)

  • mos

Sucks for those of use out-of-state, though. I’m glad I’m buying the MLB package this year.

  • EricVA

For me, the less Fox games the better. Down in the NOVA/DC region, they stopped showing the Yankees so I get shut out of Saturday afternoon games. Extra Innings package is good, though expensive just to watch the Yankees. Meanwhile, it’s Comcast that’s the worst company ever. No MLB Network, no Extra Innings HD and they steal my money whenever possible (not kidding about this). I’d do the slingbox thing if it didn’t mean watching games on my 17 inch computer screen. What else am I supposed to do?!

  • Dan

SNY’s Mets announcers are the best in the country – hands down. Learn so much more from them. The YES announcers are boring
