Report: Yanks considered Swisher for Cameron

A-Rod's house is a very, very, very fine house
Open Thread: Giants look to return to NFC Title Game

This one comes from old friend Tom Haudricourt, who’s still trying to find a way to squeeze another Brewer on his MVP ballot. Apparently the Yanks have “floated the idea” of making another run at centerfielder Mike Cameron after signing Mark Teixeira, this time using Nick Swisher as bait. I don’t know if this means they floated the idea internally or to the Brewers. I’d be all about the reported Melky + Igawa for Cameron deal, but not a straight up Swish for Cam deal. (h/t MLBTR)

Swish is too much unless they take swisher’s salary and part of cameron which i would bet my life that they wont. Swisher is the ultimate bench player, he can do everything. Watching the 1996 World series a couple days ago they won because of the beastly bench they had.

  • A.D.

I doubt that the Yankees considered this deal for 1 second

  • Reggie C.

Essentially a swap would mean that we traded 3 years of Swisher for 1 year of Cameron? Yeah … i see no way that makes any sense for Cashman.

  • Rob

He must had to fill line’s in the paper. No way is this happening. Cause if it does the Yankees will have 4 FA OF’s next year. Doubt it!!!!

    • http://nyfaninboston.blogspot.com/ Manimal

Especially with an anemic pool of FA Outfielders next year(basically just Holliday)

      • Cor Shep

resign damon for leadoff and LF and sign Vlad as a 3 year DH.

I just realized if the super bowl is Giants-Ravens, It will be a rematch of the 2001 Superbowl, in the same stadium(Raymond James Stadium in Tampa)

    • A.D.

Key for the ravens next week is if everyone that got hurt will be able to play next week.

I really hope the Steelers win this afternoon; and not because I despise that douchebag Philip Rivers, but because a Ravens-Steelers match-up in the AFC title game is like the Super Bowl Jr. That would seriously be an awesome match-up.

      • http://nyfaninboston.blogspot.com/ Manimal

        yeah I agree

      • Steve H

Have to disagree with you Jamal, I’m rooting for Pittsburgh only because I despise that douchbag Philip Rivers.

Is it even reasonable to think about getting Figgins? If so what would it take?

      • Steve H

Probably reasonable, but I don’t know what good he’d do. He’s below average offensively and defensively. Gardner is capable of matching Figgins’ 2008 #’s with better defense and less attitude if he gets benched. Figgins was great in 2007, but that’s the exception, not the norm.

      • A.D.

Interesting if the Angles would want him for the outfield or 1B

        • Mike Pop

I brought this up a couple weeks ago. I would deal Nady for Figgins but that’s me.

  • Peter Lacock

Mike A., Manimal, A.D., Reggie C., Rob, you guys are all over this. One could also say CMoney would effectively be trading Marquez, Nunez, Betemit and Swish for Cameron. No dice.

    • http://nyfaninboston.blogspot.com/ Manimal

Is your last name really Lacock.

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona

You’re either trading the three players and netting Cameron. You never had all four players at once, so you can’t say you would be trading all four for Cameron.

  • Brandon

    LOL No chance in hell.

I’m not buying this floated idea especially from this particular source.

  • Phil McCracken

The Brewers had accepted a Melky for Cameron swap. Why would Cashman up his end to Swisher over Melky?

    Dumb trade.

  • ryan

why does cameron’s name keep coming up … I don’t even think a straight up trade of melky for cameron would be fair, he’s a one yr rental for 10 mill. Swish can play center with some pop and a low batting average and high on base if that’s what the yanks want… cameron is a natural CF and plays undoubtedly better defense but he’s 37 and a rental.

  • Dustin

Melky and Igawa plus maybe some cash for Cameron made some sense because we’d still get good defense but better power and OBP (and hopefully wouldn’t owe any more money on the 40-man payroll if dumping Igawa equalizes things). But why would we give up Swish’s position versatility and switch hitting capability for a guy who largely only plays CF, only bats right, is 35, gets on base less, hits for no better power, and is owed millions more? It’s pretty simple. We want versatile players defensively and offensively. If we had a bunch of players who could play multiple positions, we’d be all the better for it.

  • Macphisto

I really want to see what Gardner can do over the course of a season. None of these CF trade options (Winn, Cameron) interest me. I wonder what a Nady and Miranda deal could yield. Miranda doesn’t have a place anymore in the organization and he is a decent lefty bat at first. I would love to see a Nady/Miranda/Romine and a pitcher for Bumgarner. Probably would take more tho. But, that is the kind of trade the Yanks should make. Get some young talent for Nady and keep Swish. Even if you have to add to a Nady package. Replenish the farm.

    • Mike Pop

If I was giving up that package I would want a guy like Henry Roengardner.

    • Dustin

What?! Why would we give up one of only two or three viable catching prospects in our organization when soon we’ll need to replace Posada? Romine and Montero, particularly, should be untouchable.

Also, we should not trade any of our OFers unless we are getting someone who will fill an immediate need in return–that is, a solid #4 starter like Harang, a CFer with a better bat than Melky or Gardner but just as good defense, or a utility middle infielder with speed and solid defense (Ransom is decent at the corners, and Swish can back up 1st, but Ransom isn’t so great in the middle, and we absolutely need someone to back up Jeter reliably if his knees act up or he injures his wrist again). Along with Harang, I would also explore getting Chone Figgins (though he’s not that great at short either). Doubtful the Angels would give him up, even though they’re curiously (considering their OF depth) rumored to be interested in Nady.

    • Dustin

Also, I would definitely include Miranda in a package if need be. He’s on the old side for a prospect and, like you said, is blocked out in the majors.

  • ortforshort

Swisher for Cameron works for me. Shores up centerfield until AJax is ready and keeps Nady around, who’s a better player than Swisher, thus improving two positions with one trade.

  • Macphisto

I think the Giants might be motivated to get a bat. Believe me, if Bumgarner was coming back I don’t think anyone would have a problem including Romine.
I am all for going onto the season as is. But, I understand the idea of trading Nady. He is a one year player, cheap, and is coming off his best year. The Yanks can get something solid for him. No interest in Harang. None of the CF options for Nady so far are interesting. A utility IF like Valaika or Frazier from the Reds would be interesting. Trade Nady for some kids. Sign Abreu for 2 years/$16mm. That is an interesting scenario.

  • hal

Do people really imagine that Swisher could be traded for Harang?

Or that Nady for one year is worth some quality prospects?

    • Macphisto

I think Nady and Miranda could yield some good prospects in return. Especially with a team like the Giants who could make the playoffs in a weak NL West with some offense. Nady alone I think could yield someone like Todd Frazier from the Reds who could also make the wild card with some more offense. Don’t want to trade Swish.

  • Yankee Magic

I hate Cameron. I say just let the kids rome cneter feild until there is a good option. Cameron is old and declining, the Yanks should just let him do that somewhere else.
