Yanks lose out on Garcia

Via MLBTR, Freddy Garcia chose to sign with the Mets over the Yanks. It’s a minor league deal apparently, but he could earn up to $9M in incentives. I can understand why Garcia made the decision he did, he’ll have a much better chance of sticking with the big league club with the boys in Queens.

Fire Cashman over not sigining Garcia?

Come on injury problems and not that great…not worth up to 9 mil. Esp. when Sheets is asking for between 7-12 or so…

            FIRE MIKE SAYS!

  • Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Rosenthal has an interesting piece on Juan Cruz relating to Mike’s draft pick post the other day

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9119922/Cruz%27s-plight-shows-free-agency-flaw?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=49

” The larger question — and more difficult issue — is whether draft-pick compensation should be eliminated entirely.

MLB favors such an approach, under one condition.

In exchange for granting players free agency without constraints, the owners would want predetermined salaries for draft picks — in effect, a salary cap for players signing their first pro contracts.

Certain veterans who object to large bonuses for amateurs might endorse such a “slotting” system. But the union, as a whole, opposes such a tradeoff, believing it would limit the earning power of future generations.

The subject, a hot-button topic between the two sides, is certain to be revisited in the next round of labor negotiations; the current deal expires in 2011.

For now, the players and owners should just settle on updating the Elias formulas.

Call it “The Juan Cruz Rule.””

    • Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

While this would benefit the Yanks and Red Sox by eliminating having to give up a draft pick for signing a free agent, it would destroy the Yanks and Sox draft strategy. They would no longer be able to pay over slot, so top talent would have no incentive to fall to them. Actually, they would have a disincentive, since the further they fall, the less they get paid.

    • Reggie C.

Which veteran would object to a $4 million dollar signing bonus that some HS kid gets? That just doesn’t make any sense. In a day and age when top HS and college draftees are getting to the majors at increasing speed, the whole old-timer mentality of kids having to sit in favor of vets has gone out the window. “Vets” are getting younger every season.

      • andrew

I don’t see any evidence that points at top HS and college players getting to the majors quicker.

  • A.D.

Good for Garcia… and the Mets do need pitching.

    “lose out”
Are strong words in this case.
    I wish him luck.

    PS- Get Andy !

    • The Evil Empire

No, why does everyone think Andy is a good idea, he had a horrific year last year, we need someone new, something fresh.

      • Steve H

We need 200 league average innings. Andy can give us at least that.

        • The Evil Empire

Fine, but do you believe he’s worth 10M, or even the 10M+ that he wants.
For that amount of money we can pick someone else up, (Sheets), he MAY not provide us with the 200 innings we may need, but if he does come through, we’re looking at a rotation with 4 Aces, that’s right 4!
We’ll just mow through lineups and chew them up haha

          • Steve H

Sheets is no guarantee for 10 innings. He’s also never pitched in NY or in the AL East. Even if healthy(highly doubtful), he’s no sure thing.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

I have no worries about Sheets being able to pitch in NY/AL East. His stuff will play anywhere.

              • Steve H

I think it will as well, but no guarantee. For the money, I’d be thrilled with either Sheets (at least 2 years though) or Pettitte.

            • The Evil Empire

I don’t know about his health, since there’s no way of telling how bad it really is I can’t defend Sheets. But lets assume a worse case scenario, Sheets is a complete bust, doesn’t last a week and he goes on the DL.
Since he has no offer out there (that we know of), why not give him a one year deal with incentives, something like 3M, with the potential to peak at 10 maybe 11.

Either way it’s a gamble I’m willing to take

I agree with jdubz. On signing Ben Sheets that is… not on that HanRam pipe-dream. Any offer right now for Han-Ram starts with Joba. Believe that.

Ben Sheets could be ours at a one-year guarantee cheaper than what Pettitte wants. He’ll give us more quality starts than Pettitte. I’m sure of that. Value Sheets over 170 innings or so, and we’ll spare ourselves some disappointment if he gives no more than 170 innings.

    • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

      Okay, some advice.

First, if you want your comments to be taken seriously, use proper English or at least let us know if English isn’t your first language.

Secondly, it would take WAY more than Cano, Montero, Jackson and Kennedy. Pretend the year is 1998 and the Montreal Expos as for Derek Jeter-you’d be demanding Pedro Martinez AND Bartolo Colon AND Vladimir Guerrerro.

The owners of the Marlins are historical idiots, true, but Hanley is a franchise player.

To get him you’re looking at Joba as the centerpiece of the deal, and then you can start talking Cano, Montero, Jackson, Melancon, Betances and maybe Hughes for good measure.

However, should Florida continue its historical ineptness (and there’s no guarantee they will do so), and if the Yankees discover El Dorado, you can maybe just barely pull off a credible suggestion that the Yankees should sign Hanley…except you would theoretically have no where to move Jeter…

      • A.D.

Marlins aren’t inept, they’re great at doing what they do

        • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

Okay, okay, you have a point…but blowing up a team after every championship win kinda pisses me off, y’know?

          • A.D.

I mean I get not liking the style, but can’t mess with success, they dont have the money/dont want to spend it. At least they aren’t a franchise like the Pirates… they piss me off

Everybody is wanting Ben Sheets. Haven’t we gone down that road with Carl Pavano ?

    • Steve H

nooooo. Sheets has considerably better stuff, and has had considerably more success. not even close. oh, and Sheets won’t cost 4/40.

    • A.D.

You’d be signing Sheets to an incentive laden deal, knowing hes hurt. Pavano was essentially the opposite

    • mtt

I agree with Steve H. Sheets has a much better track record than Pavano did when the Yankees signed him. And since when did Carl Pavano become the rule rather than the exception?

        • http://Greg Greg P

Not to be a contrarian, but I don’t think Garcia tips the scales in the Mets favor.

        • Reggie C.

          fair enough.

You gotta think that the Wilpons are big losers in the SP scene. They could’ve used Penny and Lowe. This Freddy Garcia signing isn’t even on par with what Penny could’ve brought. I think the Mets are still players for Sheets..

Cash should really impose a time deadline on Pettitte and if it passes move on. This thing has gone on too long.

          • whozat

Cash should really impose a time deadline on Pettitte and if it passes move on. This thing has gone on too long.

Why? You act like he’s unable to look at other pitchers while he’s waiting for Pettitte’s answer. In fact, the more serious he seems about other pitchers, the more pressure it puts on Andy. What would pulling the offer buy the Yanks?

            • A.D.

agreed, a timeline is just unnecessary. He doesn’t appear to have a ton of suitors, and they Yankees appear to be very ready to move on

            • Reggie C.

I want the time deadline b/c that is the most pressure you could place on Andy right now. I’m not saying the Yanks shouldn’t make a slightly improved offer, but they’ve got to wrap this one up. As this holding pattern continues, it’ll only engender greater dislike towards Pettitte.

              • whozat

I want the time deadline b/c that is the most pressure you could place on Andy right now.

Except that if he doesn’t blink, you’re forced to sign someone worse. How does that help?

You want the timeline because it will make you feel like they’re “getting tough” with Andy, who you’re cranky with. It won’t actually improve the team’s situation in any way.

                • NY Yankee Fan

By having the prospect of Andy, you have a chance at driving down the price on other pitcher FAs. It is the same way that Boras uses the Yankees to drive up prices, it is always good to appear to have options.

                • Reggie C.

                  Whozat.

If Pettitte doesn’t blink at a higher offer, then that’s that. The team moves on. You’re not going to pay him 16 Million like last year. I’d rather see that money go elsewhere.

          • whozat

That said…the Mets have really botched this offseason. They definitely needed Lowe, and they REALLY need a legit corner OFer. Manny would be a perfect fit. Dunn, even.

            • A.D.

I’f i’m the Mets now, they can still get a corner of to play LF. See if Murphy can cut it at 2b. And sign Wolf or Perez to pitch the #4.

They’ll have a good lineup, decent rotation, and that good 1-2 punch in the pen

              • Reggie C.

They needed to upgrade more than just the Bullpen. That’s the only thing they managed to accomplish. Yeah, its impressive to have Putz-Rodriguez close it out, but the Mets simply have not upgraded the rotation or lineup … the 2 most fundamental elements of the team.

              • whozat

Murphy? The 3B/sorta-LF that has a minor league OPS under .800?

I’ve heard people wanting to hand him 1B, but 2B is new. Doesn’t sound like a good idea…And doesn’t that just mean they need two corner OFers?

                • A.D.

They have Church, I proposed they sign one of the FA available for LF i.e. Dunn, Abreu, Manny.

My thought on Murphy at 2B (though I don’t know if he can really play it) is that he has to out-produce Luis Castillo….which he might be able to do. Versus the current scenario of him, Evans, and Tatis somehow being the answer in LF

    • whozat

      A) Use the “Reply to this comment feature”

      B) if you’re going to make a blanket assertion like they’re “scared to not be the best team in New York,” you might want to put forth ANY evidence that shows the Mets are better than the Yankees.

Also…we’ve beaten the Sheets thing to DEATH over and over on this board. Go search through other posts if you want to read a whole lot of discussion about this.

Don’t know anything about Garcia, but ESPN ran an article on Sheets a few years ago and he seemed like a real cool dude. Very down to earth, makes fun of himself a lot, but he’s not naive to who he is and understands what’s expected of him.

    • D.B.H.O.F. p.k.a The Last Don

I heard Sheets on Mike and the Mad Dog before the All Star game and he seems like a cool level headed guy who does not have a real good idea of baseball history (which I always find odd but is not uncommon at all, most ballplayers know very little of the history of the sport they play for a living)
