A-Rod to speak this afternoon
ByThis is good news. According to Bob Raissman at the Daily News, A-Rod will speak about the steroids issue on ESPN “probably later Monday.” That he’s addressing the issue today is a good thing; in fact, it would be pretty foolish to delay it any further. There’s no word on exactly when we’ll hear from him, so we’ll update this post when we get better info.
I think Raissman hits it with this line: “In order to reclaim PR territory he once occupied, he must come off credible and personable when he makes his first statement.” This means doing the Giambi apology thing if he knows he’s guilty, and saying point blank that he’s clean if he’s not guilty. Straight to the point, or as close to the point as he can get. Remember, Giambi never really said what he was apologizing for in 2005, though we all got the gist of it. If A-Rod took a similar tack, I would be satisfied.

Here’s ARod’s statement to the press core, in it’s entirety:

I totally laughed out loud when I read that. AWESOME scene!

Can’t say I agree with the take in this article, but it does add something to the discussion. I do agree, though, that I can totally see Alex taking ‘roids solely to look good in his sunbathing pictures.

It appears that A-Rod will be discussing this with…. Peter Gammons.
I have $100 that says Gammons laughs or smiles within the first five minutes of the interview.
He won’t be able to control his glee. It will be yellow, crooked teeth everywhere.

I don’t think so. Gammons is a Sox homer, but he’s always been very fair to the Yankees and every other team in baseball. His problem is that he just kisses the Sox’s ass a little too much.
To be fair, ARod most likely chose Gammons. Which means that he’s counting on some measure of sympathy, and will probably get it, too.
Apparently he was quite sympathetic to Rocker during his interview.
Gammons: So, Alex, when did you first start doing this despicable act of taking steroids? Who provided them to you?
ARod: Well, Peter, ironically it was actually at the 2002 All-Star Game in Milwaukee. I was there representing the Rangers on the AL team with Shea Hillenbrand, Derek Lowe, Manny Ramirez, Ugueth Urbina, Pedro Martinez, Nomar Garciaparra, and Johnny Damon, all of whom were with the Red Sox at the time, and they said there was this awesome shit they had up there and were using that was totally undetect–
Gammons: THIS INTERVIEW IS OVER!!! CUT THE FEED!!! CUT!!! CUT!!!
