Jennings speaks to Nardi Contreras

A-Rod PED Press Conference Liveblog
Dispensing with the who, what and when of it all

Blogging legend Chad Jennings spoke to Nardi Contreras – the Yanks’ minor league pitching coordinator – late last week, and has some interesting info on guys like Humberto Sanchez, JB Cox and Phil Coke (amongst others). Quick summary: Sanchez will be a reliever in 2009, Cox just flat-out ran out of gas last year, and no one really knows what role Coke will play at the start of the season. Make sure you give it a read.

I wonder if he asked him about my main man Melvin?

    • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

      Jennings: How’s Melvin Croussett progressing?

Contreras: Melvin does not “progress”. He was born an infant with perfect ML-ready baseball skills honed for utter dominance. He is merely unveiling those skills slowly and surely, like how a rose slowly and surely unveils its beauty to the world. Our place is not to question Melvin, but merely to appreciate his sublime wonderment.

Although I read this article a couple days ago, seeing this post is like an awesome breeze in the middle of a muggy night during the Summer; it may not last long, but it gives you a nice moment of relief from the crap-ola.

Summer breeze makes Jamal feel fine, blowin through the jasmine in his miiiiiiiind

        Well played, Pat. Well played.

        • pat

thanks, my posts are more or less for the smart people seal and crofts fans

          • pat

            thats SEALS and crofts, dammit

  • radnom

So is this the end for Sanchez the starter?

He is getting pretty old at this point.

    • Mike Pop

Too bad, I thought he was a future starter for the Yanks. Hopefully he turns into a nice, shutdown reliever. 8th inning, solved.

    • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Might as well be, I suppose. I’d been holding out hope for him to be a starter, but it looks like the org feels his body can’t handle starting so they want him going shorter stints in the bullpen. He still has good stuff, hopefully Sanchez-Melancon can be a dynamite end-of-game combo for us in the near future.

(Note to B-Jobbers: Sanchez is 26. He is not 22. HE’S TWENTY-SIX. That makes a huge difference. That is all.)

      • Jake H

The guy is getting up there in age and weight.

        • Darth Stein

He swallowed a lot of aggression . . . along with a lot of pizzas!

what does this have to do with A-Rod?

    • A.D.

      How is this PED related?

      • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

        Everything is PED related.

J.B. Cox lost arm strength at the end of the season. Could be related to TJ or to stopping to use roids.

Kontos to the bullpen? Is he not able to sustain a whole season with steroids?

        See, works with everything.

        • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I’m still pissed at Carl Pavano for not doing more steroids and HGH. He could have contributed, like Andy Pettitte did in Houston… instead, his lazy, non PED-using ass just sat there “waiting” to heal, like a loser.

          What a jagoff.

          • Mike Pop

Ya, I want that guy on my team. What a team player.

          • A.D.

Its that type of me-first attitude that is ruining baseball

            • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Andy Pettitte doing HGH = selfless teammate who only cares about winning
ARod doing “Bolay” = evil baby raper

  • A.D.

Good to hear that Horne is progressing nicely, and that they will continue to give him the opportunity to start

    • Jake H

I agree. I want to see Horne excell this year.

      • Mike Pop

Could help out in the bullpen, maybe be a nice little trade chip.

        • A.D.

          nice little trade chip

Bingo, he could help in a trade mid season or next offseason for hitting prospects.

          • Mike Pop

We could of had Holliday at the deadline in 08 instead of Nady if he was healthy.

  • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

From PeteAbe: “It’s beyond reason that anybody would be “young and stupid” enough to inject themselves with a drug so many times unless it was helping them in some way.”

    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/2009/02/17/the-press-conference-aftermath/

Has he ever heard of heroin? A lot of people are “young and stupid” to do drugs. I have lost the little respect I had for Pete during this whole Arod/steroids extravaganza.

    • Mike Pop

Wrong post, pal! We will let it slip this time.

      • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

I didn’t think anything was wrong with posting that here. It was such a loosey-goosey era 10 minutes ago, you know.

        • Mike Pop

Hah, remember way back then? The culture back then, just that’s the way it was.

          • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

I was just feeling an extreme amount of pressure in that situation, to get my thoughts heard after reading that big bullshit Pete was writing. It was a totally different era.

          • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

It’s beyond reason that anybody would be “young and stupid” enough to post comments in a incorrect thread so many times unless it was helping them in some way.

            • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

I was just posting in the wrong thread about twice a month for a three-year-period. Then I stopped.

              • Mike Pop

Mike, Joe, and Ben started caring more. He told himself, this is getting out of hand.

                • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

I know, but at the moment I posted this I was not honest with myself. How could I have been honest with my fellow posters?

                • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I’m proud of you for all your apologies for posting in the wrong thread, ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops… but I think you still owe a personal apology to Tom Hicks. He deserves one.

                • Mike Pop

You’ve shamed the blogging community, all across the lands. It will never again be the same.

                • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

I probably do (and I ran out of apologies anyway). I want to look to the future because I have nine years of posting left in my career.

                • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

Mike Pop, I’m sad to know I let so many of my fans down, also my fans in Texas. But I think, everybody is entitled to their opinion.

                • Mike Pop

I might be able to forgive you, but it is going to take some time. Maybe by the end of your contract.

                • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

I’ll never vote for you for the Commenting Hall of Fame. The sin you have committed is far too grave. You have destroyed blog commenting’s history.

                • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

I just the voters will look the whole body of work when my commenting career is over.

                • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Meh, perhaps. You were probably the most “feared” commenter of your era, that’s gotta count for something.

                • Mike Pop

Nope, sorry, still doesn’t get my vote. A guy who tarnished the blogging nation like you have done does not deserve to be voted in. You have brought blogging back 20 to 30 years. It will never be the same again. You were suppose to be that guy, but you ruined it.

                • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops

That is not in my power to influence. I had a lot of great comments in my career like the link to that Jim Caple article. I just hope that I’m not judged on this isolated incident.

                • http://mantisfists.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/julius-carry-aka-shonuff.jpg The Honorable Congressman Mondesi

Golf-clap to all you guys. That was awesome.

                • Mike Pop

                  No, your awesome, Mondesi.

    • Jake H

I’m getting a little tired of Pete.

      • Mike Pop

You sir, are not the only one.

        • Tom Zig

Pete Abe is another one I’ve lost a lot of respect for. Not only because he allows hob-job gibber-jabber to be posted as comments, but because he is becoming just like the rest of the media.

  • Mike Pop

Man, J.B. fell off quick. Looked at as a future top reliever, now who knows if he will even see a future spot in the bullpen.

  • MP

I’m really intrigued to see what Coke could do in a full season out of the ML bullpen.

Did you ask the 1986 Mets?

      • Mike Pop

        I found this…really funny.

      • Tom Zig

        Well played.

Does that mean their title doesn’t count?

        • http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/CRsmithT1.jpg tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Does that mean their title doesn’t count?

          Invalidate it, it’s only fair.

Upon further review, the last “clean” and “untainted” World Series Champion was the 1943 Rockford Peaches.

          • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops
          • Jim

wrong – Peaches had rosie o’donnell….huge PED/HGH user

FUCK! You’re both right. Looks like we’ll have to go further back in order to find a clean champion.

Maybe the 1919 Cincinnati Reds. Those boys were clean, not a user among them. Narrowly beat the White Sox that year, if I remember correctly.

              That one’s gotta be taint-free.
