Open Thread: A conversation with CC

By

It’s almost twelve minutes long, but it’s worth watching. Lots of interesting stuff. (h/t McCaff and Manimal)

Here’s your open thread for the night. The only local teams in action are the Devils and Islanders, but talk about whatever you want here. Just be cool.

  1. steve says:

people knock cashmoney for bringing in all these high priced free agent veteran pitchers … but CC seems like the first guy since moose who seems like a nice fun guy to be around in the clubhouse and for the fans to love … i’m very excited for all of this.

  2. Mike Pop says:

CC Sabathia does not want to be a Yankee.

  3. Bruno says:

Andy Marte was DFA’d by Cleveland, is he worth looking at for a util spot?

  4. My apologies if this was discussed already, I was a little busy today… But I wonder if someone showed this TBL post to Roy Oswalt:

    • Manimal says:

New to me. That’s some good stuff, I had no idea Bagwell just exploded like that when he went to Houston.

    • Steve H says:

I’ve been saying Bagwell was a juicer forever. Find a pic of him when he was young and he transformed just like Bonds, Sosa, and Ortiz.

      • Hawkins44 says:

I have long thought that Ortiz was on the juice… if you recall he actually said that he couldn’t say for sure that he hadn’t used steroids. I was surprised he took such a hard line stance when he arrived at spring training. He shouldn’t be throwing rocks in glass houses….

    • Mike Pop says:

They all put in the hard work in the gym. Definitely had nothing to do with PED’s.

    • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

Pitchers have been scuffing the ball, cutting the ball, and throwing spitballs since Baseball began. Some of them admitted cheating (Mike Scott/Gaylord Perry) and were STILL elected to the Baseball HOF. The last person I want to hear complain about ‘cheating’ is a pitcher. When they know the rigors of having to play everyday, then they can talk.

  5. Mike Pop says:

Quick question, if it was A-Rod’s brother instead of Pedroia’s. Would we of heard about it a whole lot more?

I don’t find it funny, I just am wondering what people think.

If anyone missed that Bruney interview, there it is.

    • Mike Pop says:

When he said that he forgot HR was on the team, that was funny. He’s so right though, everytime I turn it on there goes HR talking about Joba should be in the 8th.

    • Matt M. says:

HAHAHA “Next time you guys cant get anybody else…i’ll be sure to come on again”

you have to love a bullpen guy being honest with himself. wish all the best for bruney, he really has put in a lot of work dropping weight. thats probably one of girardi’s biggest impacts.

we’ve switched from Joe Torre’s Green Tea to Joe Girardi’s Whey Protein

  7. Manimal says:

Just curious mike, when are we going to actually start that fantasy league?

  8. A.D. says:

ZOMG….Cash pull the contract CC doesnt want to be a Yankee!!1!!

  9. Smaxor5 says:

That interview was just full of BS, he looked like he really wanted to say “it was for the money” but switched it to something else last second

  10. Matt says:

Alright so I’m trying to test my system for a Yahoo! Fantasy draft and it just keeps saying “Sending Test Message” and the screen isn’t changing. Does this mean my system isn’t working for the draft?

    • andrew says:

probably… trying using a different internet service… sometimes the difference between safari/firefox/ie makes the difference

  11. steve says:

not sure if its been brought up but noMass’s boston salary cap picture is HILARIOUS !!!

  12. Raiders back up the truck for Asomugha… So much for my sick fantasies of pairing Nnamdi and Baby Lockdown.

  13. Steve H says:

Good to see Klaw bringing some sanity back to chats.

Shannon, MO: In Neyer’s chat on tuesday he said he thought pedroia would be the best position player of the next 5 years. Is it me, or does that seem just a little ridiculous? What about David Wright, Grady Sizemore, Chase Utley, Albert Pujols, and Hanley Ramirez?

SportsNation Keith Law: I would take any of those five guys over Pedroia for the next five years. Utley might be a push, because he’s more likely to decline than any of the others, but right now he’s a better player than Pedroia. Jose Reyes comes to mind. Those Upton fellows deserve at least a nod in their direction. And Alexei Ramirez.

  14. Also, Panthers lock up Jordan Gross, allowing them to franchise Peppers…

“TAKE THE POLL: Who do you want playing center field this season?

    * Melky Cabrera
    581-23% of all votes
    * Johnny Damon
    70-3% of all votes
    * Brett Gardner
    1519-61% of all votes
    * Nick Swisher
    145-6% of all votes
    * They need to make a trade
    186-7% of all votes

    Total Votes: 2501″

    http://yankees.lhblogs.com/

Damn, I didn’t know I had so much company.

    • Steve H says:

I’d vote Gardner too. We know Damon and Swish don’t belong in CF full time. We know that Melky has regressed considerably, though I still hold out some hope. We don’t really know what Gardner can give us offensively, but he at least deserves a shot. If he fails, we go to option 2, which I’m fine with. I just don’t want to not give him a shot and wonder, where he’s the biggest unknown of the 4, he needs to get the longest look.

      • kSturnz says:

Vote’ por el Luchador. Melk’s prospect star was alot brighter than Gardner’s. If you Gardner will win it and keep it, you are in for a letdown… if you are taht invested in it. Gardner has the eye and speed over Melky; two big tools, but I like the balance that Melky brings. I saw his pictures and I thought he was eduardo Nunez, dude got cut. He Wants it just as bad imo

        • andrew says:

Well you’d hope they’d both want it just as bad. I think everyone around here is just a little tired of Melky’s mediocrity (at best) and would prefer Gardner’s mediocrity (+steals)

      • Double-J says:

I don’t see Gardner or Melky as “ideal,” so I’m pretty much on the fence, although I still have a soft spot for the Melk Man. Let them battle it out in spring training, go with the hot hand, and make a switch if you have to. Unless they go out and get somebody during the season or go all-offense OF and toss Damon in center with Matsui in left, it’s going to Gardner or Melky. I like Gardner’s intangibles, but I’m hoping Melky can get his offense turned around.

      • Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

That’s my take. I still hold out some hope for Melky, but would choose Gardner. I like the defense at a key position and the element of pure speed in the lineup. Gives us a different way to score runs on days we can’t get anything going.

Also, at age 24 Melky has been playing in the MLB since 2005 at one time or another. There’s something to be said for that, so I cant dismiss him entirely.

  16. Artist formerly known as 'The' Steve says:

“Fred (Long Island): Given that the Yankees have to give up their normal first, second, and third round picks, it would be safe to assume that their farm system will probably be rated lower next year (even though they have the first and third round do-overs)?

SportsNation Jim Callis: Not safe to assume that. For one, the Yankees have more money to spend than anyone on the draft and they can make up for their lack of picks by taking guys who fall because of signability. Fewer teams may do that this year, because of the economy, allowing more guys to fall to the Yankees. Also, if high-ceiling guys like Andrew Brackman and Dellin Betances take big steps forward this year, as the Yankees believe they’re poised to do, the farm system will look a lot stronger. ”

    http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/.....t_id=25104

Interesting point about the economy. Just like this year’s FA class, you can figure the draft class will face a similarly difficult time getting any money out of tewams that aren’t named the Yanks or Red Sox. Even the Tigers, known in the past to pay overslot, figure to pull back this year.

Throw in the Dodgers claim that they won’t sign any Boras clients, and we may have a good draft after all.

  17. A.D. says:

Looks like Jets can now go corner with their first round pick

  18. Matt says:

Alright, just rocked out a mock draft w/12 teams; picking 10th got this:

    C: Posada
    1B: Giambi
    2B: Kinsler
    3B: Chipper
    SS: Jeter
    OF: Beltran
    OF: Either
    OF: Burrell
    Util: Nelson Cruz
    BN: Bradley
    BN:Shoppac
    BN: Travis Snider
    BN: JD Drew

    SP: Hamels
    SP: Haren
    SP: Lowe
    SP: Jurrjens
    SP: Chamberlain
    RP: Broxton
    RP: Wheeler
    P: Meche

I like my IF and my starters are good but my relief core is meh, along w/my OF.

    • Steve H says:

DL Drew? I’m not against picking Sox (especially if it’s for $$), but Drew? Hope you have plenty of DL spots.

    • andrew says:

RP is definitely “meh.” Good infield as long as you come to terms with getting 120 games from Chipper. The outfield is pretty good, especially with Bradley on the bench. Snider could be a steal also.

    • Matt says:

Did another one, a little more balanced I think. 8 teams, picking 7th:

      C: Jorge
      1B: Miggy Cabrera
      2B: Kinsler
      3B: Zimmerman
      SS: Tulo
      OF: Beltran
      OF: Manny
      OF: Maggs
      Util: Dunn (!!)

      BN: Mike Aviles
      BN: Johnny Damon
      BN: Mike Napoli
      BN: Jorge Cantu
      BN: Justin Upton

      SP: Hamels
      SP: Haren
      SP: Billingsley
      SP: Lowe
      SP: Grienke
      RP: Soria
      RP: Wood

  19. McCaff says:

wow my first h/t…. im all excited and giddy… im a loser

  20. Drew says:

Wow look a Rihanna’s face. That punk kid should be jailed and get what he deserves.

  21. Conan the Barack O'Brian says:

    caption?
    http://www.daylife.com/photo/0.....rk_yankees
“We don’t even know why we’re on the 40-man for 2009 Yankees, but thanks for asking.”

  22. Ryan S. says:

Hey guys. I know I had said in the past I wasn’t going to, but a couple friends were setting up a Yankees blog and they invited me to join in, so I took them up on the offer. The first thing I did? Give props to RAB and its peerless community. Even with a piece of Yankee blogdom to myself, I consider RAB my first home and I’ll probably be more active than ever now. Anyways, check out the site and thanks for the inspiration.

  23. JM says:

Alright… CC seemed like he didn’t really want to be in NY and I think he now will definitely opt-out of his contract. Does anyone else feel that LeBron will have an impact on whether he stays or not? LeBron possibly to the Knicks (unlikely) in 2010 might get LeBron to pressure CC to stay. I’m probably the only one who feels this way…

  24. Swisher is the man

    everyone check out his twitter

  25. Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude. Dude. What just happened here?

    I fear change.

  26. !ny says:

Great interview. Imagine her instead of Gammons conducting the ARod interview…
