Open Thread: Brian Bruney, actor

In search of the Boss' love
The life and times of Scott Boras

A riveting nugget of information from Tyler Kepner today:

Finally, Brian Bruney’s movie re-aired on cable Sunday morning. You didn’t know Bruney was a film star? In 1990, when he was eight years old, he appeared in Kindergarten Cop with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie was filmed in Astoria, Oregon, the next town over from Bruney’s hometown of Warrenton.

The producers needed some extras for a scene where a bunch of kids pour out of the school during a fire drill. Bruney is one of the kids, wearing a blue-and-white striped shirt with a bright orange hat. That hat was the suggestion of his grandmother, who told him to wear it so she could spot him when the movie came out.

Exciting stuff, huh? I guess it’s better than talking about the Bruney-Reynolds feud. Yeah … there’s not a whole lot going on right now. PeteAbe’s got a bunch of pictures from camp today, but that’s about it. Otherwise, use this as your open thread. Anything goes, as usual.

Oh, quick note: I’ll be on regular RAB reader and commenter Joey H.’s radio show tonight around 8:30. You can listen in here.

Update (7:47pm): Steven found a clip of Bruney’s acting gig. Skip forward to the 6:07 mark, and like T-Kep’s piece says, he’s the one wearing the orange hat. Can’t miss ‘em.

Update (7:54pm) Manimal has a screen cap.

As I look through ST pictures and posts all I can think is how happy AJ is to be a Yankee. I think he is going to excel here.

    • Ryan S.

He certainly did as a Blue Jay. Maybe he’s the type of guy who just excels in the NY spotlight. I remember someone on ESPN or something saying there’s never been a guy who signed a $80M contract who has received such little press as AJ Burnett, so he should have a slightly easier time adjusting than he may have had previously.

      • whozat

“He certainly did as a Blue Jay”

Actually, he spent a lot of time on the DL and mixed his stellar starts in with plenty of stinkers.

        • Mike Pop

Think he meant that AJ excelled here in New York while he pitched for Toronto.

  • http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?id=594331910&ref=name Jamal G.

You see, Harold Reynolds? That’s what happens when stupid people make their idiotic opinions public, they offend others.

    • Drew

Take it easy man, Bruney didn’t even play last year, marte had a hard time getting lefties out(which is his job) and veras is rather bummish. The fact Reynolds says we have a hard time getting to Mo isn’t that big of a deal and he’s probably right. Now if Bruney does what he’s capable of he’ll prove everyone wrong.

      • whozat

Except that they DIDN’T have trouble last season, even once Joba had left the pen.

        So…

        • Chris

Stop with the facts. They always ruin a good argument.

  • Sweet Dick Willie

“If they do that, they would have Bruney, Chamberlain, (Jose) Veras, (Damaso) Marte,” Reynolds says. “You’d be making it a six-inning game for 162 games. Book them into the World Series.”

Do you think these asshats say this for the ratings or because they believe it?

Either way, I’m sick of it.

    • Mike Pop

It sounds good to the “untrained” baseball fan I guess.

  • Mike Pop

Should I bank on Travis Snider or Adam Jones and trade Carl Crawford for Felix Hernandez or Fransico Liriano?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

      No, Crawford’s a fantasy stud.

      • Mike Pop

Oooh, I’m trying to get David Wright. I offered Beltre, Greinke, and Brian Roberts(I have a whole bunch of depth in 3b/2b). He told me he is seriously considering it.

    • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

I named my fantasy team SwishersBiggestFan.

      • Mike Pop

Heh, I pretty much always use Straight Cash Homey.

    • andrew

Felix Hernandez and Liriano are two totally different levels… I’d say no for now, but if a month in, Adam Jones is still playing well, i’d swap Crawford for Felix.

      • Mike Pop

I want a Hamels or Haren but Felix is solid for Fantasy, I guess.

  • http://nyfaninboston.blogspot.com/ Manimal

I will try to get a screen capture of bruney.

  • Mike Pop

Looks like Griffey might be going to the Braves.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike A.

      Contracts?

      • Mike Pop

Davis is so sick though. Him, Howard, and Dirk. 3 guys who can breakout at anytime.

        • andrew

Davis has been hurt all year though… Kidd is more of a sure thing.

          • Mike Pop

I don’t know man. Davis has better years left in him and remember what he did to them in the playoffs? Just sickening for them, haha.

Blazing Saddles is on (sweet)….AMC. Not so sweet.

    • Steve H

It’s following 48 Hours and Caddyshack. Good day for AMC.

      • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

Doesn’t that interrupt their regularly scheduled “Godfather” programming? Don’t get me wrong, I love those movies but they’re on CONSTANTLY.

    • Ryan S.

John Kruk just said the Yankees outbidded themselves for A.J. Burnett. I guess that 5 year / $80M offer from the Braves was with monopoly money.

      • Ryan S.

doh…did not mean for this to be a reply.

      • Mike Pop

The Yankees are bad for baseball.

        • Ryan S.

          The Yankees invented steroids.

          • Steve H

And are the only team to use them.

  • Mike Pop

    Lol @ Shaq.

    • E-ROC

That was fire though especially for a man his size. lol.

We have our new 8th inning guy.

  • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

There must be something on that isn’t the NBA All-Star Game or edited Blazing Saddles, right?

    • Ryan S.

ESPN is having a 3 hour baseball special that’s basically a regurgitation of everything we already know. Its about an hour into it, that’s where I got that Jim Kruk quote from above.

      • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

I just switched to it in time to see them show the Rays additions, incl. Pat Burrell and they put (.250, 33 HRs in 2008). When is the “worldwide leader in sports” going to move past using BA/HRs and W-L/ERA? I mean for Mo’s sake, they just put Price’s W/L on the fucking screen.

        • Steve H

Did they mention how Price belongs in the bullpen and is more valuable in the 8th than as a backend rotation guy?

          • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

No, but they didn’t mention Abreu’s on-base abilities in talking about his addition to the Angels.

            • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

Howie Kendrick did, however, just say that Bobby Abreu plays “great defense.”

        • Ryan S.

I do see OPS+ getting used more and more frequently by the mainstream media. That’s probably the first advanced statistic to break “the ESPN advanced stats barrier”. It’ll be like the stat version of Jackie Robinson.

          • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

I’ve only heard OPS but never OPS+ used.

            • Ryan S.

I’ve definitely heard someone on Hot Stove Live say it at least once, for what its worth.

              • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

                Ah, I don’t have MLB Network so…

            • http://and-that-happened.blogspot.com Evan

They used OPS+ on “Prime 9″ for their countdown of best rookie seasons for position players.

@ Ryan, who mentioned OPS+ on “Hot Stove”?

              • Ryan S.

                I honestly forgot.

No love for the NBA, Matt?

      • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

Meh, I just don’t like it as much as I did when I was a kid. NCAA > NBA.

        • Ryan S.

I’m kinda meh about basketball in general, but March Madness does make that month before baseball starts so much easier to get through. The WBC should make it even smoother this year.

          • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

College basketball is second only to baseball in my mind. Growing up in CT, the Huskies were pretty much the only pro team to follow so I’ve just stuck with them, even more so now that I go to UConn.

            • Ryan S.

Baseball > football > college football > college basketball > basketball > hockey would be how I rank the team sports that I enjoy.

              • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

                Baseball>>>College Basketball>>NFL>NCAA football>>>NBA>>>>>>>>NHL (no Whalers, no care!)

has anyone been down to spring training before? ill be in tampa this thursday and i would like to drop by but i dont know when they’ll be on the field and how much access ill get if i go check it out

    • Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Spring training is great. Not only will you get autographs before the game, you can even stand behind the batting cage during batting practice.

If you want, you can also sit in the dugout during the game. There’s so many guys working out down there coming and going that nobody even notices. Just get yourself a jersey with a high number. If anyone asks, tell them you played in Charleston last year.

      • Mike Pop

Tell them you are dare I say, Melvin Croussett.

        • Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

          Girardi-” ‘THE’ Melvin Croussett?!?”

          • Mike Pop

I hear Melvin appears as a burning bush because the human eyes cannot handle such a presence.

Anyone else find it interesting that DeJesus’ WPA was almost the same as Bobby’s and Cust’s, even though he played only 135 games compared to Bobby’s 156 and Cust’s 148?

    • Mike Pop

Yes, I find that very interesting.

    • whozat

Does WPA take defense into account, or is it just the bat?

  • http://liberalmusings.wordpress.com Pablo Zevallos

John Kruk looks like a douche with those glasses.

    • Mike Pop

(Ravech):”Kruk, you like those moves that Boston has made.”

(Kruk): “Well yeah, if they can play.”

          I guess Drew needed company.

          • Mike Pop

I hope we see a bunch of Jeff Bailey in the outfield this year!

        • Tom Zig

Don’t forget Lowell, Ortiz, Lugo, and Drew.

          Maybe even Lester.

          • Mike Pop

            Let’s not go crazy here.

            • Tom Zig

Going crazy would be: beckett, matsuzaka, wakefield.

I just listed the people who had serious injuries last year.

oh and JD Drew’s back is still sore.

              • Mike Pop

                Okay, okay.

  • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

John Kruk just said the Yankees need to figure out what the Yankees are going to do with Joba.

Does he not read the newspapers?

And he’s starting a B-Jobber argument we don’t need to get into.

    • Mike Pop

Ugh, dude I saw that. Buck agreed, this is so irritating.

      • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

It’s ridiculous. I’d like to know how many guys who work for ESPN read the FanGraphs piece about Joba’s potential WAR as a starter and WAR as a reliever. Shit, I’d like to know how many guys even know what FanGraphs is (aside from Neyer and Law).

        • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

Also, with the whole “future closer” thing, it’s clear that they have no knowledge of the farm system (Melancon) and future plans for the Yankees. It’s ridiculous. My goal for ’09 will be to watch as little BBTN as possible.

          • Mike Pop

Ya, after a while enough is enough. Cashman and Girardi have stated that Joba is the 5th starter right now. There is no more speculating, come on Kruk.

            • Mike Pop

Heh, I was bitching about it to my dad. He’s just looking at me with an expression like “just shut up”.

              • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt

                My dad’s a B-Jobber. Ugh.

                • Mike Pop

Joba better not break down while being a starter. The B-Jobber’s would be right! Scary thought.

Craig Sager and his crazy suits.

  • Mike Pop

Kruk also said that the Yankees offense may not be good enough to compete.

    • Tom Zig

What does he want us to do? Sign Manny?

    • Drew

lol everyone is a 300 hitter except swish and probly jorge. Stupid kruk

      • Tom Zig

Melky/Gardner is not a .300 hitter. Aside from that yeah.
