The eighth highest paid man in all the game

By Benjamin Kabak

Sports Business Journal, via Maury Brown, reports that Bud Selig’s total compensation exceeded $18 million in 2008. His $18.35 million package put him $7 million ahead of the NFL’s Roger Goddell and makes Bud Selig, the beleaguered commissioner, the eighth highest paid person in baseball in 2008. Suddenly, the Yanks’ spending doesn’t seem so exorbitant, and all of the outrage over escalating salaries may be a bit misdirected.

Tom Zig says:

George Bush to be Selig’s replacement? what would be his VORP?

Ben K. says:

Bush’s VORP — or VORC — will be in the negative numbers. I think a few years ago the owners would have considered Bush to replace Selig, but at this point, that guy is too polarizing a figure to stick as the head of baseball.

Condi Rice has made public statements saying her interest in being NFL commissioner. Now that the Roger Goodell ship has sailed, maybe Condi throws her hat into that ring.

JohnnyC says:

How ironic. Before Bush ran for Governor, he approached the other owners about becoming commish but was told by Selig that it would be a terrible conflict of interest. Rebuffed, Bush decided to pursue politics instead. Of course, the COI didn’t subsequently stop Selig. Ha.

What’s with the italics?

Ben K. says:

Mock outrage over Selig’s salary.

Or, um, a typo.

Jack says:

I love that it did the whole site as well.

Wordpress doesn’t do a blanket tag close at the end of the post call function. I’ve never understood why not.

Effing seriously? I went in and changed that this morning. No idea why it still showed up.

God forbid the comissioner of the entire league is highly paid.
What a crime. He gets paid by the owners, and the league has prospered on his watch.
He shouldn’t make the same as Jason Giambi?

ahahah bush might be a polarizing figure but he gets ppl talking. and ppl talking usally means dollars.

thisisthedavid says:

bushie boy could steal us mad nascar dollars ahah

A.D. says:

So he was making 3M in ‘03, and now he’s making 18M base… so its not some bonus off of baseball attendance or anything, seems like that could trim that down to 10M and find something better to do with the 8M…especially given I wouldn’t consider Selig some amazing commish.

Manimal says:

What a joke. The eight highest payed man doesn’t even suit up for games.

Mike Pop says:

Why is that a joke? He runs the league, he should be getting paid $$$. Although 18 is a little ridiculous but I’m not gonna hate on him for it.

Tom Zig says:

He wears a suit, usually a gray one that is straight out of the 1980s.

He wears a suit, usually a gray brown one that is straight out of the 1980s 1960s.

Fixed.

Yeah, look how much Spielberg makes, and he aint even on the movie screen!

My boss makes 100 times more than I do, and he aint the one going out there bringing in the sales. But he does assume the risk if the business loses money. That’s the way the world works.
The owners are the ones paying him his salary, and the owners are the ones that make the investments in their teams that either make or cost their organizations (and themselves) money.

AROD and Jeter make no investments, and have no financial risks. They just collect and collect and collect, regardless of how the organization is doing. And if the organization flops, they can just go elswewhere and make more money, and assume no liabilities.

Yeah, poor, poor ballplayers.

Mike Pop says:

Selig’s been commish for 17 years, do you do it until you retire or until you get voted out? Is there some sort of rule?

Tom Zig says:

has a commissioner ever been voted out by the owners in any sport? is that even possible? I assume you stay until your contract runs out, but who decides contract length?

Faye Vincent says hello.

Tom Zig says:

Haha fine I should have done a little research, but I was 6 years old when Faye Vincent was last in charge. Although he got an honorary degree from my school, that jerk lol

Mike Pop says:

Google it my friend.

Jack says:

On January 17, 2008, Selig’s contract was extended by the MLB through 2012, at which point he plans to retire

Judging by that, it goes by contracts.

Mike Pop says:

Are you some kind of miracle worker?

Jack says:

If I was, do you think I’d still be reading “blogs” in my “mother’s basement”?

Well, Oliver Perez finally signed up with the Mets. Apparently him and K-Rod are worth the same exact amount of money to the Metropolitans.

Mike Pop says:

Way down from the 80 mill Boras was aiming for.

pparently him and K-Rod are worth the same exact amount of money to the Metropolitans.

You know what? Yeah, that sounds about right. Yup. I’m in utter agreement.

Is it me or did my comment about Buster’s chat get erased. Spam filter doesn’t like me?

Ben K. says:

As per the commenting guidelines, we don’t like off-topic comments.

Unless they’re about pornography, or mocking Oliver Perez. Those two off-topic topics are ALWAYS on-topic, baby!

Ben K. says:

Those are still up because I was in class and I’m not now going to delete comments that have been up for two hours. But they shouldn’t be there either.

I’m just busting your balls a little…

… now go home and get your shinebox.

Why? Is he a clown to you? Does he amuse you? Funny how? How am I funny?
What a great flick!
