2009 MLB Draft Reports

By Mike Axisa

Just a heads up, MLB.com has started posting scouting reports (with some video) for the top prospects of the 2009 Draft. Right now there’s about thirty reports, but they’re constantly being updated and come draft time there will be over a hundred available. It’s a great way to kill time at work learn about these guys. Also, make sure you check out ESPN’s MLB Draft Blog (unfortunately it’s behind the Insider wall). KLaw and Jason Churchill are updating the thing daily with scouting reports (with video!), performance updates, tons of stuff. Make sure you add it to your RSS reader, because the damn thing is impossible to find on ESPN’s site.

A.D. says:

Boxburger is just an awesome name.

Are all the guys profiled so far basically 1-2 round talents, or is it somewhat random?

A.D. says:

Gary says:

How about

Seth Schwindenhammer HS OF from Illinois with Big Power

Now thats a name

It’s official:

I have a mancrush on Jiovanni Mier. It’s fast developing into a bromance.

Mike, what odds would you say Mier has of falling to us? 40% likelihood? Less?

Jake H says:

Probably pretty good. I’ve seen some stuff showing him going to the Yanks with their first pick. Who knows if that happens.

Is it me, or is Everett Williams a doppelganger for Austin Jackson?

WILL says:

NO I THINK ITS JUST YOU

A.D. says:

Tim Wheeler is basically drafting pure grit

whozat says:

Is his prospect photo just a sack of gravel sitting on the ground?

John says:

What are the chances the Yanks can draft Strasburg?

GG says:

Would it be very against all draft rules if Hank publicly floated some ridiculous figure we were willing to give the kid and Boras just told everyone else to back off? I’ll answer my own question and say yes, but it’s not like Hank hasnt tampered already anyway.

huuz says:

keep in mind that the sux draft right before us…(even if he does manage to fall to the late 1st round…)

Reggie C. says:

A couple intriguing Jacksons could be available. I mentioned Brett Jackson yesterday. Ryan Jackson (SS) out of THE U is the could provide some sorely needed middle infield depth. He’s got a mini-profile up at MLB.

– Should Kyle Gibson drop. Don’t worry. The RS should take him off the boards.

I saw that.

They also noted, however, that Ryan Jackson is struggling so far this year, batting .277 or something like that.

Reggie C. says:

True. But you’ve got to think that Jackon’s defense is already as good as the top filler the org has at SS right now. I’m also intrigued with what improvements could be made to his offensive game. Gotta love the frame.

Matt says:

I’m liking what I see about Ryan Jackson. A tall skinny shortstop with an inside-out swing who’s good to the opposite field…hmmm…Gold Glove caliber up the middle. Well, that’s new but the the other stuff sounds real familiar…

Will (the other one) says:

Off-topic, I know, but has anybody seen the full version of Nate Silver’s BP Daily article today? It purports to look at players “through the fun house mirror” to see what Prince Fielder’s stats would look like if he were thin using PECOTA and some other metrics. Unfortunately, ESPN only has it available to Insiders, so I haven’t been able to see what it’s actually like.

John says:

yea, i saw that but could not access it also

27 this year says:

Hey Mike, are we having prospect profiles anymore?

Mike A. says:

No, only during the offseason. Draft content now.

Jarrett G says:

its almost draft time and most prospects seem to be sliding up and down through their Draft Stocks, although this is probably considered a weak draft class this year compared to last year….the main talented prospect and possible steal of this draft could be playball academy’s 2b/OF Montaous Walton down in South florida, the Kid is Currently leading the Entire academy in Stolen Bases with a Steady .330 Batting average.

Mark D says:

he does have raw speed with a good arm and Decent Bat, they have him listed at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, but watching him in person he looks a little lighter than 175 maybe 160-165 pounds, otherwise he can play.

Freddie says:

looks like he should be added to the top infielding list of prospects, speed is a great thing, but he seems to also Hit with a good arm thats a plus….hope he goes somewhere between the 10th and 18th round somewhere. besides the game can use more speedy players of his caliber.

Jason says:

another draft prospect that have been on several scouts Radars for a while is Cameron Garfield he is a really good Catcher that can get it done at all times. he should be up there in the top rounds for sure.

Phil says:

I could not agree more! With the traffic jam of catchers this season and the question marks surrounding injuries with some players, Garfield has had his rough spots, but with that being said he has one of if not the best bat in this years draft for the catchers. The other thing is his defense. I keep seeing things about defense. This is absolutely Garfields finest asset, he consistently throws pop’s in the 1.78-1.88 range and has the best footwork/mechanic’s in the class. The biggest thing over both the hitting and the defense is the make-up, great player/person. In general, you just want to surround yourself with people like Garfield.

Susan Hudson says:

Brian Murphy, rhp, University of Central Oklahoma, class of 2009, fastball 88-92, Great Circle Changeup; good curveball. Pitched 86 innnnings this season with 86 strikeouts. Check him out. He is good to go.

Gary says:

How Nick Schrock from Texas Wesleyan, 50 some steals, Gold Glove potential Mid 300′S all year. class of 2010. Batted 400 in NIIA tournament. They made it to Regional champonship, Got beat by Oklahoma. This kid could be the steal of the draft. No pun intended

The Scout says:

NICK SCHROCK IS RAW!!!!

Teena says:

Looking forward to good spring season
