Cano & Marte hurting

By Mike Axisa

Fresh off a dramatic and historic loss to the Netherlands in the WBC, Robbie Cano and Damaso Marte returned to the Yanks today nursing some minor injuries, says Pete Caldera. Marte has pain in his left pectoral, believed to be the result of weighlifting, while Cano’s right shoulder is barking. It’s possible Cano’s injury is a result of the workload and intensity of the WBC games. Both players are going to get checked out by the Yanks’ medical staff today, and won’t see action this weekend as previously thought. The injuries sound minor, so hopefully they won’t be out very long.

it seems all injuries are just “minor” and we should have nothing to worry about, then a few days later after there have been tests done its not as “minor” as they thought.

im just hoping that THIS TIME it will actually be only minor and not something serious.

Great, they didn’t even do anything and they got hurt.

J.R. says:

In hind sight the Yankees did overpay Marte in years and dollars.

Ryan S. says:

Maybe…but I think another team would’ve paid a similar amount in the beginning of the offseason. My guess is he would’ve been one of the first relievers off the market regardless, before it totally tanked.

jsbrendog says:

agreed, lefty with very good and consistent stats against both righties and lefties coming off a very good showing for the yanks in the al east sans his minor injury which occurred the same time he got hit up.

they maybe overpaid by a mill i mean what’s he getting 4 mil a yr? farnsworht gets 4.625 over 2 years. i rest my case

jsbrendog says:

and thats 4.625 a yr for 2 yrs, making it 9.25 total. sorry for being unclear

Ryan S. says:

Now that Girardi knows how to actually use him (no 40 pitch outings!), I’m looking forward to seeing Marte as a high-leverage reliever for a full season. I’m expecting a lot out of him and Bruney as that ever illusive bridge to Mo.

whozat says:

That wasn’t Girardi “not knowing” how to use him. It was an issue that was forced on him. Joba left early because of his shoulder, the pen was already blown out from previous games, and other guys weren’t getting outs.

It was kind of the same thing that happened with Ohlendorf. They repeatedly had to call on him for multiple innings multiple days a week due to ineffectiveness of starting pitching and an overtaxed bullpen.

Jeremy says:

Cashman was clearly worried about going into the season without a proven lefty reliever, so he snapped up Marte.

Marte is still overpaid, but the Yankees were willing to overpay to lock him up, which makes sense.

jsbrendog says:

marte 4 mill a yr

farnsworth 4.625 mill a yr.

Drew says:

How is it overpaying? The season hasn’t even started. We’ll see if you change your tune when he pitches to a 2+, 3 ERA and gets Ortiz in a big spot. Come on guys have some patience.

Ryan S. says:

Ladies and gentlemen, get ready for “The Cano Clause” in all future Yankee contracts. It shall state that the Yankees have the option to block a player from participating in the WBC, even if they aren’t coming off of an injury.

It’s possible Cano’s injury is a result of the workload and intensity of the WBC games.

That’s not possible. Cano is Dominican, he doesn’t work hard nor is he intense, he’s lazy and aloof.

whozat says:

Per peteabe:

As for Cano, he said his shoulder was tight before he left for the WBC. Then he played every inning of three games. He said he thinks it’s just tight and he’s not hurt.

This is the kind of thing that upsets/worries me.

Tight shoulder early in ST = rest.
Tight shoulder early in ST + WBC = hiding the injury because he wants to play for his country

Awesome.

Ryan S. says:

I concur, I am both worried and a little peeved.
