Cashman was clearly worried about going into the season without a proven lefty reliever, so he snapped up Marte.

Marte is still overpaid, but the Yankees were willing to overpay to lock him up, which makes sense.

How is it overpaying? The season hasn’t even started. We’ll see if you change your tune when he pitches to a 2+, 3 ERA and gets Ortiz in a big spot. Come on guys have some patience.

That wasn’t Girardi “not knowing” how to use him. It was an issue that was forced on him. Joba left early because of his shoulder, the pen was already blown out from previous games, and other guys weren’t getting outs.

It was kind of the same thing that happened with Ohlendorf. They repeatedly had to call on him for multiple innings multiple days a week due to ineffectiveness of starting pitching and an overtaxed bullpen.

As for Cano, he said his shoulder was tight before he left for the WBC. Then he played every inning of three games. He said he thinks it’s just tight and he’s not hurt.

This is the kind of thing that upsets/worries me.

Tight shoulder early in ST = rest.
Tight shoulder early in ST + WBC = hiding the injury because he wants to play for his country

Now that Girardi knows how to actually use him (no 40 pitch outings!), I’m looking forward to seeing Marte as a high-leverage reliever for a full season. I’m expecting a lot out of him and Bruney as that ever illusive bridge to Mo.
