Open Thread: NCAA Randomness
ByOh you can just go to hell Memphis. I’m down to three of my Final Four and six of the Elite Eight, max.
- Help Tom Tango to he can help me help you. Seriously, it takes like, three minutes.
- Further evidence that power pitching wins.
- Remember that bit about the Yanks’ farm system being valued at $97.8M? That’s good for 13th place in the game.
- A 17-year old girl pitched in a game in Japan. She faced only two batters, walking the first and striking out the second. (link has video)
- If you’re in or around the grand metropolis of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Chad Jennings has about a meet-and-greet with the 2009 Scranton Yanks.
- Some more goodness from Jennings: Alan Horne will pitch in a game this weekend, and the Yanks released six minor leaguers, most notably 2007 nice stats guy Braedyn Pruitt. I’ll miss Clint Preisendorfer more.
- Everyone assumes that if Derek Jeter moves to outfield it’ll improve his defense. Well, the move certainly didn’t help Robin Yount, and he was at least six years younger than Jetes when he made the switch.
- A Philadelphia Phillies season preview … in iambic pentameter! (h/t IIATMS)
- After all the talk about how fat CC Sabathia is and how Joba Chamberlain’s weight can be problematic, who would have guessed that Oliver Perez would be the starting pitcher on a New York team battling conditioning issues?
Here’s your open thread for the night. The Yanks are in action against the Reds in an untelevised game tonight, while the Isles and Devils are in action locally. You’ve also got a quartet of college baseketball games going on. Anthing goes, just be nice.

There was talk (in that chat I think) about the beers of the world tent, and the Bud monopoly on the Stadium. I think Mike mentioned hoping for some Sierra Nevada, but I think it unfortunately would probably just be inbev (which owns bud now) brands from around the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InBev_brands
Some decent beers on here at least.
Boddingtons
Bass
Hoegaarden
Natural Light (just kidding)
jump out on me, but I dont recognize the majority of the list.
Natty is the best!
sup bro
I drink Milwaukee’s Best so I can be like Mickey Mantle!
St. Pauli Girl…awesome
Don´t worry random….inbev is a from Brazil and they have 2 of 3 best beer in Brazil : Brahma and Antartica Original. If they have one of these in the stadium drink one for me ! (hope i wrote everything right).
Today I read about Plaxico’s lawyer working on a plea agreement. Plaxico wants to return to the Giants sometime during the season. If he doesn’t get jail time I think the city should be outraged. Strict gun laws have been passed in many states such as Florida and New York, especially focusing on “illegal” guns. The laws are there for a reason.
…but he’s teh SUPERSTAR!!!11!1!!!! Rules obviously don’t apply to him, and don’t even pretend to not know this
Did I forget to mention? GO REDSKINS!
Dude I’m a huge Giants fan and I agree with you. He should go to jail on sheer stupidity. Sweatpants waistband =/= good gun holster.
Yea, I don’t know what is dumber, getting wasted in a club with an illegal gun in your pants, or forgetting to turn the safety on.
I, sir, find that offensive and racist and horrible and mean and ignant and stoopid to people with uh… red skin. So there.
Since when did Shakespeare become a baseball analyst, previewing the Phillies season?
I saw that too. Very strange. It must have taken forever. The amount of time it takes to write a stanza in Iamic Pentameter is staggering. A whole season prediction! Weeks!
Should the Yanks pounce on the girl pitcher before the Red Sox eat her up? You know, I don’t want us to overreact and sign some other wannabe girl pitcher that handle big (league) bats.
NO..beacuse I am supposed to be the first woman baseball player. At least thats what I told everyone when I was a kid.
YG, I saw your post about Metallica in the other thread.
When you saw them around 85, that wouldn’t have been in the Rio theater (a barely renovated old movie place) in Valley Stream, would it? Because I was there. I saw Metallica there on their first tour, and saw Yngwie Malmsteen’s Alcatrazz band there, the first version with the old singer from Rainbow (Grant Bonner) who kicked ass. That place was the best, walking distance from my house.
Nah..I was never there. I saw most of the bands back in the day at Lamour in Brooklyn. That was my 2nd home..I have seen everyone there..Metallica (with WASP and Armored ST), Anthrax, Accept, Queensryche, Iron Maiden (as Charlotte and the Harlots), RHCP and for 2 bucks every Tues night..Twisted Sister. You name a band from back then, I have probably seen them at Lamour.
BTW..my friends band opened for Alcatrazz up in Yonkers a few weeks ago. Grahm was singing..he said he was a great guy.
Right, “Graham Bonnet”. I totally mangled his name before.
LOL..I didnt even notice.
L’Amour! That brings back memories, also spent much of my legal-drinking-aged youth there.
WOW! There’s so many wrong things in this post.

Boo YES network for playing the Nets game instead of Yankee spring training.
You know, I wrote a blog post last year about the gender barrier…and I got laughed at
I guess I was just ahead of my time.
LET’S GO SYRACUSE!
If we find a taker for Melky, would anyone consider Jim Edmonds as Gritner insurance? He probably wouldn’t come in as a bench player, but if he’s still available in May/June and Gritner isn’t getting it done I think it’d be worth a shot.
He can’t really play CF anymore, and there was a post on baseball analysts (or hardball times?) that analyzed the balls he put in play last season and noted that his spray chart would be particularly ill-suited to Yankee stadium…lots of balls that went for hits and homers elsewhere would die in death valley at the Stadium.
Works for me.
Two comments about the other sporting events going on tonight:
1. NCAA Tourney – What a boring set of games thus far. Louisville never trailed to Arizona and beat them handily. So much for three aspiring pros, huh? And Syracuse isn’t doing much better against Oklahoma. Will there be one close game in the Sweet 16 round?
2. The Devils have already taken five penalties in the first period against the Blackhawks. For those of you who follow the Devils, you know that should spell disaster, especially on the road. However, the PK is 1-for-5 tonight.
By the way, the Devils winning 2-1 at the end of the first.
apparently CC pulled down his pants and took a dump on the Reds tonight. opening day…so soon….yet so far….
yeah 7.2 innings with 14 groundouts is pretty solid.
Just an FYI regarding Yount’s move to CF. He was moved because the team feared his shoulder couldn’t handle SS anymore. He was a GOOD SS, and apparently CF didn’t fit his skillset very well. One could argue Jeter has a different skillset.
My bracket is crashed and burned. I think I am in the 9th percentile.
This is very last minute, but there is an open spot in a Yahoo fantasy league (free of course) drafting tomorrow afternoon at 1:30PM. I’ve opened it up to the public there, but I figured I’d list it here too in the hopes of getting someone smarter than the average Yahoo, well yahoo.Stats are a mix of the default/traditional and the more esoteric and meaningful. Please only join if you can make the draft and will stay active. Info:
