The RAB Radio Show – March 26, 2009 – Episode 20

By Joseph Pawlikowski

For only the second time in our 20 episodes, we’ve got Ben on. It’s always nice to have that third voice in there. The main reason: we each posted our 20 Most Important Yankees lists this week, so we thought the podcast was a great opportunity to discuss them a bit deeper. We lead the program off with that, talking about what we considered important (something I regret leaving out of my list) and why we put players/staff where we did. Plus, we got to poke a little fun at Hank.

From there it’s onto reader questions, which are just a great way to get the conversation started. We talked about Joba’s velocity among other topics — including the battle for utility infielder. Yesterday on the RAB Twitter feed we asked if anyone else wanted Ramiro Pena to make the team solely because he’s not Angel Berroa. I guess I was outed as the guy who asked, because Mike and Ben seem to favor Berroa for other reasons. Oh well. As always, it was a great job by the listeners, sending in excellent questions.

Just a quick note before we embed the media player: This is the open thread for the evening. Feel free to discuss the radio show, but of course anything goes.

Late add: Dave from Blueseat Blogs asks, and I must oblige: Let’s go Rangers!

Onto the podcast. It is available in a number of formats. You can download it here by right clicking on that link and selecting Save As. Dave says:

Can I get a Let’s Go Rangers?

Joseph P. says:

They better damn well beat the Thrashers. Though I’m disappointed in myself for not following the Rangers closely enough over the past month or so.

Dave says:

They are in the middle of a real right playoff race, every game means something. Now’s the time to start watching games, they are all exciting.

Jack says:

Not without a please.

Dave says:

Can I get a Let’s Go Rangers, please?

Jack says:

Now that I had to tell you, it won’t mean the same. Sorry.

Joseph P. says:

Well played ya hoser.

Matt says:

Jeff Adrien’s top of the key jumper is not working tonight, and both teams are playing pretty sloppy. I don’t like this.

Thomas says:

Adrien is killing them. He is 1-9 from the field and can’t guard Hummel (as expected). I think they should might need to put Robinson on Hummel and play 3 guards over Adrien.

Matt says:

That’s exactly what I said–Robinson needs to be guarding Hummel tonight; he’s more athletic. I don’t know about the three guard strategy, though, becuase it seems as if we’re not shooting all that well tonight and we need Adrien in there for rebounding. I wish this team could transition to zone a little easier to combat the shooting of Purdue.

Thomas says:

The problem is if you don’t take out Adrien, then he has to guard one of their guards, who he couldn’t defend either. They need him for rebounding, but he can’t played defense so they are in some trouble either way.

Matt says:

Yeah, which is why I wish this team played zone every so often, it could neutralize defensive problems when our size is countered by athleticism.

Matt says:

Apparently both teams missed the day of basketball practice when they were informed you need to make shots to be good at this game.

Thomas says:

UConn needs to play some transition defense.

Matt says:

And make free throws. And make field goals. And stop fouling.

Matt says:

Elite Eight, baby!

Thomas says:

Big East 2 teams in the Elite Eight all ready. Hopefully, ‘Nova makes it 3 teams and 1 in the Final Four.

Reggie C. says:

Don’t jinx the Wildcats !! (Keeping fingers crossed)

Matt says:

I hate having to root for this team, haha. But I picked them in my bracket and I hate Duke.

Jack says:

Ben and Mike: Why do you want Berroa over Pena?

I’m for it so as to let Pena play everyday in Scranton and not use an option. Is that your reasoning, or is there something else I’m missing

steve (different one) says:

yeah, i think you go with Berroa b/c you can just release him when A-Rod comes back. if you put Pena on the 40 man, you’ve closed off another roster spot.

Thomas A. Anderson says:

Is Mark Grudzelanek still unsigned?

Jack says:
steve (different one) says:

seems like there is something we don’t know, right?

surely it can’t be as easy as calling him with a minor league deal, b/c i am sure someone has done that by now, don’t you think?

he must be waiting for a starting job or maybe he’s retiring….

Raf says:

anyone else not having the latest podcast show up on itunes?

Jack says:

I have a Zune, and it’s not there either. Although, to be fair, it usually takes a couple hours anyway.

Mike Pop says:

Paulie says:

Is the number 1 a perfect square?

John says:

yep…im pretty sure

John says:
Paulie says:

I’ve just been wondering because I have heard yes and no when I asked, “Is one a perfect square?”

Thanks.

Paulie says:

OK, heres a little math question…

Factor the trinomial

3a(squared) – 7ab + 2b(squared)

Ogre says:

NERDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paulie says:

I’m not a nerd, I could not get the answer…I’m just a freshman in HS. Hahaha

A.D. says:

buy a TI-89 calculator…worth every penny

andrew© says:

TI89’s are absolutely ridiculous. Unfortunately, they didn’t allow them on tests in many of the classes I took in HS.

Tom Zig says:

Ben, Mike, Joe

While your suggestions for what would be awesome if it happened for the Yankees are good, I would settle for Cano and/or Teixeira winning gold gloves over their red sox counter parts.
