He now has just one of his three optional assignments left

Isn't the deal with prospects signed to major league deal that they have to be put on 40-men, but they can have more than three option years (4-year ML deals - 4, 5-year ML-deals - 5)? So, Brackman would by default have 4 option years. Willy Mo Pena played 4 years in minors (I don't know if 5th year was injury rehab or he started in minors).

The problem is that most of these opt out's come late in the initial contract. In A-Rod's case it was after 7 years of a 10 year contract. In Burnett's case, it was after 3 years of a 5 year contract. In both cases, it was obvious that they would get longer deals (and higher total dollars) than they had remaining.

I just can't see CC opting out just because there is a slight chance he can do better.

I think just about all the big-name players who have ever had these opt-out clauses have used them... and gotten more money. I see C.C. going the A-Rod route and using the opt-out to get the Yankees to bid against themselves. If there are younger aces on the market at the time, though, I guess that might throw a wrench into things.

Unless there's miraculously some kind of very well-groomed college shortstop available for us that is comparably ranked to the best graded player available to us, I would say just go for the best guy out there. Teams like, say, The Reds, they need to draft in a different way than us, where drafting for a position of need is sometimes more valuable to them than getting the best guy available. For organizations like us or Boston, we can always fulfill needs via trade or free agency without much worry, so you always get the best guy available - especially if he's actually a middle-of-the-round type pick but he's fallen to you because you'll pay him above slot.

Fair point, but I would want the pitcher chosen over a position player to have a clearly better grade, not just marginally better.

Given that he's only 25 right now, and trade for HanRam would be when he's at age 26 or 27, he'll still be in peak athletic condition for several years, so you wouldn't expect a considerable decline in either defensive or offensive play for the foreseeable future. Incidentally, were we indeed to get Ramirez and offer him a hearty contract extension, he'd be a good candidate to replace A-Rod at third when Rodriguez is eventually relegated to primary DH duties - this is of course being waaaaaaaay in the future.

As much as I love Joba, I'd love HanRam even more. All we need is for Hughes to be ready to kick ass in the next couple of years, and for Joba to pump up his trade value, and you could definitely see this trade happening one day. Let's just hope Boston isn't capable of putting up an even more appealing package than something involving any or all of Joba/Betances/Brackman/Montero.

It’s hard to concentrate on a certain type of player when you don’t pick until #28 and then don’t pick again until #76 and then don’t pick again until #135.

We should take the most talented, valuable player who comes to us. If that’s a pitcher, so be it: that pitcher joins our crew, making it easier to stomach trading Betances and Brackman for HanRam…
