Yanks keeping an eye on Crosby

Via The Boston Globe, the Yanks and Cubs have been keeping an eye on Bobby Crosby, who no longer has a spot on the A’s roster after the signings of Orlando Cabrera and Nomar Garciaparra. In an effort to improve his versatility and (of course) boost his trade value, Oakland has played Crosby at short, third and first base this spring. I lobbied against Crosby before we learned about A-Rod‘s injury (a day before, to be exact), but that doesn’t change my opinion at all. I mean, I guess if it’s a pure salary dump (owed $5.25M in 2009) and all they have to give up is one of those “future considerations” thingees, then maybe. But just maybe, nothing more. (h/t Seamus)

In all seriousness, I say no. The only other team I seriously follow outside of the Bombers is the Athletics, and this guy just blows; the man hasn’t posted an OBP of .300 or better in the past three seasons for fuck’s sake!

When does Crosby get presented with his MVP Award that Gammons predicted? Can you imagine how much smoke Gammons would have blown up his ass if he were (at the time) at Red Sox?

if the A’s were willing to eat $2M and take back a C prospect, then maybe.

otherwise, is Crosby actually better than Cody Ransom?

even his Rookie of the Year season was kindof crappy.

if he can play all 4 IF positions and doesn’t cost $5M, he could be a nice bench addition. anything beyond that, i’d pass.

Pass, we have to free up a 40 man spot & the money has to work out. Maybe for Igawa in a bad contract swap, but there’s still the 40 man issue, for a guy that really has never been that good.

If we could add him without taking on more than a negligible amount of cash (say $500,000) and a player to be named later, I say go for it. With defense and offense taken into account, he was worth 1.0 Value Wins last year (according to FanGraphs). His defense has been average/slightly above average at short. So, if the cost is minimal, he would present an upgrade over Berroa.

Crosby isn’t really that good. The A’s would have to take on at least a couple mil. Even then I don’t know if it is worth it. Especially with the way Ransom and Berroa are playing in ST.

Crosby can never stay healthy. His effort last year when he was healthy also doesn’t inspire confidence.

He can field, which is a unique skill on the Yankees, but his bat makes him worthwhile only if the cost is something like Igawa.
