  1. Man, what I would give to be able to hold a lead…

  2. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Who would win in a Scrap Off. Pedroia or Gardner? Pedroia would have to spot Gardner 20 grit points of course.

  3. V says:

I really don’t get the aversion to playing Pena.

  4. Yankees Ben says:

betemit> berroa… and that says something

  5. V says:

‘Would you rather have Youkilis hit with…’

    Um…

    Wow.

    These guys are beyond stupid.

  6. Matt ACTY says:

Stealing 20 out of 21 bases means you’re not a base-stealer…? How fucking delusional are these guys?

  7. Alex S says:

    swish k’ing a lot lateley

  8. Mike Pop says:

Swish is k’ing a whole lot lately. But, that is part of his game.

  9. Brazilian Yankee says:

    damn Swisher..

  10. southernyankeefan says:

Swisher needs to heat back up.

  11. Moshe Mandel says:

Anyone else not getting pitch type and speed from Gameday?

  12. Swisher’s always K’d a lot.

  13. Brazilian Yankee says:

Brazilian announcers are talking about Youk and how much of a dick he is. I don’t know how they got to that but I’m loving it.

  14. So what’s Robbie’s hit streak now?

  15. Matt ACTY says:

B.J. Upton makes that play. Crawling.

  16. Mike Pop says:

    Better season:

    Cano or Pedroia?

  17. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Hey Mike, they’re talking about you. haha

  18. Mike Pop says:

Heh, I just made a comment on the rotoworld liveblog as “redcocklover” and he answered it!

  19. BigBlueAL says:

Hey Steve Phillips is giving credit to the Yankees!!!!

  20. Nady Nation says:

“They already traded one good second baseman in Alfonso Soriano. Maybe if Cano gets traded, they’ll trade the next guy.”

    HOF analysis by Morgan

  21. That was foul by about two inches.

  22. Reggie C. says:

    tough luck Mats

  23. Tom Zig says:

How many runs do you have to score if you give up 22?

    23. Simple mathematics fail

  24. Brazilian Yankee says:

damn, I thought that was a HR..

  25. Matt ACTY says:

I love how they’ve gotten absolutely zero production out of the third base position but they’re still averaging almost six runs a game. I cannot wait til A-Rod is back.

  26. Drew says:

    Hideki el fuego

  27. southernyankeefan says:

    matsui looks good tonight.

  28. Wow, Matsui 2-2.

However, my faith in the Yanks’ ability to get CanĂ³ home is somewhat stymied by the BLACK HOLE OF DOOM at the bottom of their line up.

  29. A.D. says:

So far Berroa has bunted and made some bad defensive plays at 3B, why exactly is Pena not starting?

  30. A.D. says:

    Classic Melk.

  31. southernyankeefan says:

Fuck Melky at least see more than one damn pitch.

    • Drew says:

I’m assuming you said fuck Teix in the previous inning?

      • southernyankeefan says:

tex can swing at the first pitch if he wants to because by the end of the year he will probably be hitting around .290 with over 100 RBIs Melky will be nowhere near that. Plus i like tex.

  32. Matt-Pitt says:

Why are we first pitch swining with men in scoring position AND on breaking pitches?

  33. V says:

Nope, any hopes that Melky’s improved his approach at the plate are unfounded.

I had high hopes for him, but if he can’t improve his approach, he’s just a fourth outfielder. Shame.

  34. Mike Axisa says:

Nice one Melk. You hit those two homers in teh bandbox the other day, by all means, keep swinging for the fences.

  35. BigBlueAL says:

Another 4 runners LOB in the past 2 innings.

  36. Jake H says:

Love it when the guy can’t throw strikes and we swing at the first ball. Also Tex and Swish don’t need to swing at balls at their eyes.

  37. Andy Pettitte: Hall of famer?

Does he get in if Moose does?
    If Moose doesn’t?

    Does it not matter?

  38. Matt ACTY says:

If Dave Stewart, Jack Morris, and Andy Pettitte get into the HOF….

  39. Evan says:

If Jim Rice got into the HoF, so should Andy Pettitte. Standards have fallen that much.

  40. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I say everyone should go in the Hall of Fame.

  41. Man you guys are harsh.

  42. Good, walk Bay. He’s killed us this whole series.

  43. Evan says:

If Pettitte is losing his pick-off move due to old age, i’ll take it. He still knows how to pitch.

  44. manimal says:

    So, what have I missed?

  45. Evan says:

Why can’t CC and Joba do that?

  46. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

ESPN: “John, How come your pitchers are so great and the Yankee pitchers so bad??”

  47. Matt-Pitt says:

Alright, c’mon offense. Pick up your pitcher.

  48. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

It’s amazing that Lincecom throws exactly the same now as he did as a litlle kid.

  49. Alex S says:

the “this is beyong baseball” commercials just don’t compare to the “where amazing happens commercials”

  50. I think MLB stole their beyond optimism campaign from me.

  51. Matt ACTY says:

Farrell’s comment just makes you wonder why the hell the Sox used Papelbon in a five run game yesterday.

  52. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Yeah, just gloss over those arm problems…

  53. Mike Pop says:

    Philips, stop making these comparisons.

  54. Evan says:

Except Smoltz is on the DL now until June so is Baldelli.

  55. V says:

That first pitch foul ball looked fair on that bizarre camera angle they had. Am I the only one who thinks that?

  56. Why do I feel like I’m watching NESN?

  57. Mike Pop says:

    Billy Beane wanted Mark?

  58. Alex S says:

Billy Beane in oakland coveted Tex?

  59. V says:

I see Gardner learned the classic ‘show bunt before watching a strike’ move from Melky.

  60. Matt ACTY says:

    Boston’s brilliant acquisitions:

    Baldelli: Disabled List.
    Saito: 5.06 ERA
    Penny: 7.80 ERA
    Smoltz: hasn’t pitched yet

  61. Drew says:

    Gardner really hates fastballs

  62. BigBlueAL says:

Gardner swings like he has a dick up his ass, pardon the language.

  63. YankMan says:

Gardner looks so overmatched. Maybe he should bunt more. Can’t hurt.

  64. Mike Axisa says:

    Gardner’s an igniter.

  65. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Gardner really does suck…

  66. V says:

    Gardner has Swisher’s patience.

Unfortunately, he has absolutely none of his power. Thus, pitchers don’t actually throw him balls.

  67. Matt ACTY says:

Someone please get Doug Melvin on the phone.

  68. Evan says:

    Single. Captain.

  69. YankMan says:

Cmon Tex. We need that Yankee moment right now !!!

  70. Evan says:

Would be nice for Tex to just drill one here.

  71. When do we really start talking about Toronto being for real?

  72. Matt ACTY says:

    Gene Tenace at the plate….WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMY!

  73. V says:

    Mother f-ing fucker.

  74. Matt ACTY says:

Goddammit, the ball is just not carrying to right tonight.

  75. YankMan says:

    Oh well. Maybe later.

  76. Evan says:

Get tex back on those roids.

  77. Alex S says:

when the hell is Tex gonna get going?

  78. Matt-Pitt says:

    Just missed…

  79. Reggie C. says:

    where’s the power??

  80. BigBlueAL says:

    Masterson really sucks.

  81. Matt ACTY says:

I really wish Andy Pettitte could get a strike on the low outside corner.

  82. Mike Axisa says:

    Walking Varitek is inexcusable.

  83. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

    Good walk Andy.

  84. Aysh Andy, why exactly are you walking Varitek on four pitches?

  85. Matt-Pitt says:

    DP?

  86. BigBlueAL says:

Well at least Papelbon isnt available tonight I assume. As bad as the bullpen has been, I think the Yankees will win a battle of the bullpens tonight, as long as Pettitte can keep it up.

    • Steve H says:

Melancon baby! Seriously though, I hope Melancon gets a chance to prove himself in the next 2 weeks. I’d like to see him up for good.

  87. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Yeah. Wouldn’t it be nice if your fast guys got on base?

  88. Steve H says:

Walking Tek to lead off the inning=not good pitching.

  89. Matt ACTY says:

Yeah, Joe and Steve, sac bunt with a guy who’s hitting hot at this point. Real good move, guys. Please, manage a baseball team together so we can all laugh at you.

  90. V says:

Jed Lowrie = ‘Excellent young shortstop’?

Where is he on the ‘Excellent young shortstop’ scale, with Hanley = 10?

  91. Matt ACTY says:

    STFD, Nick Green.

    (Sit the fuck down)

  92. VO says:

Well according to ESPN gamecast the red sox are 63% likely to win. Who would of guessed?

  93. Jake H says:

    Throw a strike.

  94. Lanny says:

The fact that Cashman couldn’t get a competent 3b to play 3b for a month and then play a versatile bench role for the season is inexcusable. Acquiring a guy like Mark Teahan would have been way too smart. But hey Cashman is real good at signing checks as a GM.

  95. Brazilian Yankee says:

Pettitte’s command has left him this inning.

  96. BigBlueAL says:

Shit Pettitte’s pitch count getting up there now.

  97. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

True story. Jason Varitek is in the Daytona Beach Baseball Hall-of Fame. He played one game for a summer league travel team when he was in high school, and he got put in when he made the majors.

  98. Mike Pop says:

    Ugh, I hate that.

  99. Jake H says:

Walking guys isn’t going to help Andy.

  100. Matt-Pitt says:

    Gotta throw strkes, AP.

  101. Brooklyn Ed says:

Girardi should tell Jackson to warm up. He has to start trusting him.

  102. BigBlueAL says:

I wander if the Yankees starting rotation’s strategy for some reason is to walk hitters on purpose. Because they sure as hell love walking hitters so far this season.

  103. Reggie C. says:

Is theo’s plan to have josh reddick replace ellsbury?

  104. V says:

    Mother FUCKER.

  105. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I would say that those were bigger than an A, probably a C

  106. Evan says:

Now is a good time to get Jackson and Melancon in the game. It is April, this games doesn’t mean anything more just 1 of 162 qames. Bettwe now than in September.

  107. Mike Pop says:

Hell of a time to break out.

  108. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Horrible, horrible job by Pettitte.

  109. BigBlueAL says:

    Fucking horrible pitch selection there.

  110. V says:

    WTG Andy. Great pitching, man.

  111. Matt-Pitt says:

Should’ve thrown the breaking stuff… C’mon, Andy. Get out of the inning with just that run.

  112. Nady Nation says:

Why the hell didn’t they keep throwing offspeed stuff away?

  113. Jake H says:

That’s why you don’t walk a guy to start an inning.

  114. BigBlueAL says:

Nothing like Yankee pitching to get a hitter out of his slump. Although honestly Papi really hasnt done shit this series.

  115. Reggie C. says:

a sox slam will make me turn off the tv.

  116. Evan says:

Ortiz hasn’t made good contact with a fastball all series. Why go to the breaking stuff?

  117. ansky says:

Any excuse for a Yanks suck chant, the chowderheads drool

  118. V says:

I am so checking the pitch f/x on this inning after the game.

  119. BigBlueAL says:

Did they say his name right???

  120. Reggie C. says:

    OMG

  121. Evan says:

    Pathetic. That’s just embarassing.

  122. Matt ACTY says:

This is getting to be rigoddamndiculous.

  123. southernyankeefan says:

    are you fucking kidding me.

  124. manimal says:

    What the fuck.

  125. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Pathetic.

  126. V says:

Pettite = slow to the plate. Period.

Let’s put this ‘he’s awesome at holding runners’ crap to rest.

  127. BigBlueAL says:

    This really is becoming embarrassing.

  128. ansky says:

awesome…just started getting happy about Mark warming….and then theres that

  129. YankMan says:

That is unbelievable and that is what happens when you are caught asleep at the wheel.

  130. Well, on the bright side, maybe we’ll see Melancon.

  131. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

    Good play.

  132. Brooklyn Ed says:

Melancon warming up. oh crap. :D

  133. Dave says:

Just keep the wheels on. Please.

  134. BklynJT says:

That play makes me wonder why Gardner is such a scrub.

  135. Mike Pop says:

    Just shitting on them.

  136. Brooklyn Ed says:

    wtf Andy.

  137. Matt-Pitt says:

    Horrible…

  138. Dave says:

    Sigh.

  139. V says:

Can we trade our pitching staff?

Rofl, yeah, I’m overreacting, but fucking hell.

  140. Mike Axisa says:

At least Drew’s on my fantasy team.

  141. YankMan says:

    Take Pettite out now !!!!

  142. Matt ACTY says:

Awesome. My patience for and confidence in the Yankees are both falling. Fast.

    • Mike Pop says:

Yea man. It’s rough. Maybe this lights a fire?

My confidence is still pretty high but my patience is running out. It’s getting hard to watch.

      • “My confidence is still pretty high but my patience is running out.”

        I agree, it’s very frustrating.

This is when it’s important to stay off the ledge. It’s April and it sucks to lose like this to Boston, but this is still a very good baseball team at considerably less than full-strength.

I’m not saying people can’t be upset. I’m pissed. I’m just saying – it’s easy to tell people to stay off the ledge on April 5, but it’s moments like tonight when cooler heads have to prevail for the Yankees. It’s not just a matter of there being a lot of season left to play, it’s a matter of taking stock of the personnel and looking forward instead of back. This is still a very good team.

  143. Brazilian Yankee says:

Comon Girardi, make a fucking move. Pettitte is done.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Our bullpen is dead tired. You want this to become a 20-1 game and blame it on Girardi for going to the bullpen?

      • BklynJT says:

Girardi can do no right, so yes people do expect him to pull Pettitte, and yes they will blame him for runs given up by the bullpen.

  144. Reggie C. says:

This is fucking embarrasing. This team aint the Yanks.

  145. Slu says:

These last two games are embarrassing.

  146. Matt ACTY says:

I know the move worked but…trying to steal home with two outs is not a good risk to take.

  147. Raf says:

Berroa was playing the Ortiz shift for Drew. i think the dugout was closer to 3B than he was.

  148. John says:

    Those 2 walks hurt…like always

  149. Matt ACTY says:

Finally this dude calls a strike on the outside corner.

  150. YankMan says:

The Red Sox can just tape this series and they have a 2009 Greatest Moments highlight DVD that they can sell.

  151. manimal says:

These are not ideal conditions to have your first appearence. Melancon must be shitting his pants right now.

  152. Alex S says:

just saw another highlight of the steal and it looks like Ellsbury tripped

  153. Dave says:

Its unhealthy how much I hate just about every guy on their team, you would think they all kicked my dog.

  154. Okay, it’s still only a three run game, we can still win this….

    Right?

    Please?

  155. BigBlueAL says:

The Red Sox are just fuckin laughing their asses off.

  156. V says:

Looks like Boston takes April. Hopefully we get the August and September series.

  157. YankMan says:

    Malancon exhausted? Really dude?

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah let’s use Melancon in his first ML start in a situation like this. Seriously you > Girardi. And please at least know his name before you try and epically failing to own me.

  158. Drew says:

    Sometimes ya gotta race!

  159. Matt-Pitt says:

This is one of the most embarassing series I have ever seen. Our closer blows a lead when we should’ve blown it open in the 9th anyway, we play (and so do the Sox and Umpires) one of the ugliest games ever yesterday and today somebody steals home on us and JD Drew actually gets a hit after looking foolish at the plate the past 2 at bats… Lets hope our bullpen can hold em’ for once and our offense gets us back in this game. This isn’t a must win, but every game gets magnified when playing these guys and it would be nice to not get sweeped our first meeting of the season, especially on 2 games beforehand that we should’ve won. C’mon, Yanks. Pick it up, you are all better then this.

  160. Slu says:

They are still in it. You gotta hope they get some right back.

  161. V says:

Hey Swisher, what’ll it be this time? Watch strike three, or swing at a fastball at your eyes?

  162. Matt ACTY says:

Pettitte’s gotta go back out there for the sixth, right?

  163. Ace says:

I’m making this one comment tonight…

Ellsbury just made us look like a bunch of fools and the Sox have embarrassed us this series.

    Let’s go sweep Detroit.

    Goodnight.

  164. Matt ACTY says:

The MSM is going to ride this steal of home for MONTHS.

  165. Rally Caps? says:

I don’t know what’s missing… but I think it left when Joe Torre did. I wanted Girardi a lot. Whatever the “it” is that’s missing — I don’t so much think it’s Girardi that’s the problem so much as it is not having Torre.

Maybe it’s just an overreaction on my part

    • Dave says:

Its the fact that here we all sit, waiting for something bad to happen. Theres no more quiet confidence that our starting pitcher will be lights out and carry us, that our bullpen will come in firing lasers and get out of a tight jam, that our offense will come though in the clutch. I watch these redsox games and wonder what will go wrong next…and thats what is different.

  166. manimal says:

If he was out we would all be talking about how stupid Francona is.

  167. Angry Axl says:

In all honesty, how bad is our team? 1-10…10 being the greatest. I say we’re about a 2 right now…we’ve declined quickly down to the embarrassing atmosphere…

  168. Brooklyn Ed says:

    Cano = awesome.

    • BklynJT says:

I remember reading Mlbtr posters regarding how Cano is washed up and overrated… Hopefully Hughes can also prove them wrong on Tuesday and every start thereafter.

  169. Raf says:

at least Cano has been a bright spot out of this series

  170. Right now I feel like CanĂ³ is single handedly trying to will the Yankees to win.

  171. manimal says:

I just realized that they brought back the open stance with Cano, didn’t they change that last year? Or am I just oblivious to everything.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Nah he is getting closed though quick and doesnt have that leg kick anymore. He starts open but then brings his leg back and closes up before striding forward w/o that leg kick. Much simpler at the plate and obviously better results, although even with the old stance he hit pretty damn good too.

  172. Reggie C. says:

posada walks home tonight. he doesnt get to sleep on the bus; hope he’s woken from his nap at the plate.

  173. mike says:

embarassing is if the Yanks dont drill Ellsbury next time up – curtain call??

    • Raf says:

if they could im sure they would prefer to drill themselves for falling asleep on that play. the blame is all on them.

    • BklynJT says:

If we want to shut them up, how about our pitchers throw up some zeros. I’m glad Ellsbury took that curtain call. Hopefully the Yankees are as embarrassed as us fans are.

  174. Matt ACTY says:

Can people stop selling Chase Utley short? He is the best 2B in baseball. Period.

  175. Brooklyn Ed says:

on the bright side, Papelbum isn’t on tonight.

  176. Matt ACTY says:

That wasn’t Uggla’s first ASG, Joe.

  177. manimal says:

Why is ESPN so dumb? At the top they show OBP%, SLU%, then OPS. Seriously?

  178. Nady Nation says:

    Great AB, Georgie.

  179. Mike HC says:

The Yanks have to show some fight in these last innings, and I think they will.
