The guy behind the plate told Melky to swing. So he did.

    • Lanny

That’s just a preview of the empty Yankee Stadium this summer. Maybe they’ll give out cowbells to make it seem like its loud and full.

      • Drew

I guess you don’t listen to the news?

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Any chance we can get him to tell Melky to jump off a bridge?

  • Lanny

No one K’s quite like Melky does.

Someone tell him its extra innings and the cab to hit the clubs is waiting. maybe then we’ll actually drive in a run.

    • Bob Stone

      That’s really funny

    • giselle

Too bad Everett falling down didn’t lead to runs.

      So discouraging.

  • Ivan

Hughes must be saying to himself, “I get more runs support in the minors than when im in the majors”

    • JobaWockeeZ

      IETC

      • Lanny

Well, Scranton probably has a better lineup right now.

          Ignorance, thy name is Lanny.

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

You think maybe if Hughes batted he’d get a hit with RISP?

If Swisher can pitch, you know?

    • Bob Stone

      Funny – But maybe . . .

    • A.D.

      Pinch hit with CC.

    • A.D.

If only we had gotten Micah Owings in the RJ trade !!!!!!111!!!

    • Accent Shallow

According to BRef, Hughes has 0 professional PA.

      • Lanny

You wasted your time checking B Ref for that???

        Wow.

        • Accent Shallow

I know he has none in the majors, wonder if he got any in the minors.

Besides, it takes 20 seconds. This isn’t 1995 anymore when we’re all on dialup.

          • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

Funny story, on Twitter Brian Hoch said he heard a 56k modem in the press box…

  • Lanny

I seem to recall that we went thru this utter disaster last year of watching Melky everyday in CF. Right?

We had a whole off season to find a new CF and we don’t? I just don’t get it. They benched this guy in July last year for a reason.

    • Bob Stone

      Melky’s barely a bench player

    • http://ryanhandt.blogspot.com/ handtius

maybe because we got a guy in the minors they want in center in the near future.

      • Lanny

If Jackson is as sure a thing as all these other great position players they’ve developed the past decade, then wow!

        We are in for greatness!

When did having extra talent on the team ever hurt?

        • JobaWockeeZ

          Yep, Cano is teh suxor.

        • A.D.

Realistically it comes down to there not being great CF option.

Sox wouldn’t trade Coco Crisp to us.
          Andruw Jones declined a contract
          Rowand is grossly overpaid
Cameron talks broke down on money, and he may be a Yankee yet.

So its not like the Yankees passed on some star CF in the name of Austin Jackson.

          • Lanny

Cano is one. One very good position player developed in a decade. That’s not just sad. That is an embarrassment.

            • A.D.

Soriano was also developed in the past decade.

              • doug YF

Well… technically Soriano came up in Japan. He only spent a year in our farm system after he was signed as an IFA from the Hiroshima Carp.

However, harping on the Yankees for not developing a position player “in the past decade” isn’t a legitimate point. First of all, the years of neglecting the farm system are over. The past few years, the best players available to us in the draft have all been pitchers.

The Yankees simply don’t get high first-round draft picks you need to get can’t-miss position player prospects.

  • Ivan

Lets hope for a DP here.

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Bingo! Good call by Coney. That IS a good pitch. Don’t let them lean over the plate on you, Phil. If you hit him, so be it. They’ll learn eventually, and you’ll get the outer half of the plate back.

    • A.D.

Especially on Cabrera, the guy who can easily do the most damage.

In response to you on the last thread:
I have to keep reminding myself to not take these online blog comments so seriously. It seems like people tend to be far more extreme on these sites than they would be in real life, person to person. I was just suggesting, that maybe a more positive outlook would be helpful, but after thinking it over, why the hell do I care.

    • Lanny

Is it just me or does Kay never do Detroit games? I remember hearing him say on his radio show a few years ago that he always avoids doing the KC series in the summertime because of the heat. Maybe if they turn off the AC in the booth, he’ll stop doing Yankee home games all together!

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Artist formerly known as ‘The’ Steve

Actually, there was an incident where he made disparaging remarks about the city, and manager Jim Leyland caught wind of it and called him out publicly about it. Since then, I cant remember him doing a game.

Not sure if its by choice or if YES doesn’t want him there.

      • putt

I got to sit in the YES/NESN booth a few years ago @ the Stadium during a Fox Saturday game and Kay was watching from in there.

He sat right in front of us and introduced us to his “friend,” a slutty-hot girl (you know what I’m talking about) who couldn’t have been more than 25 (cool points for him).

Long story short, he was actually a pretty cool guy. He talked baseball and shot the shit with us all game long. It was difficult seeing around his domepiece tho.

He’s just tough to take on the broadcasts, imo.

My friend and I were talking about how Melky can’t be our centerfielder forever, then some guy I did not know rudely interrupted our conversation and asked “who would you rather have?” I said BJ Upton(this was before he was great) and the rude fan said I was nuts and that Melky was so muchmore talented than BJ. We argued for a while, then I left him alone. It is just funny to look back on that today.

After yesterday’s unicorn hack of espn.com I got to wondering “What other fun could we have with them?”. With this in mind I googled “ESPN hacks” and this came up. Very interesting.

That would have been a Gardy HR ,inside the park though

  • JobaWockeeZ

Another long bat from Cano. Edwin out next inning so if we don’t score its not over.

so what do you guys think of the air force one incident yesterday? i go to fort hamilton H.S. in brooklyn and i walked outside for gym at 10am and saw the plane flying really low with the f-16 just above it. it was a cool sight until i heard about the panic in manhattan

  • Raf

woah how does the 3B ump get to make that call?

  • Accent Shallow

    Someone’s getting tossed here.

  • Matt-Pitt

I heard that foul tip on TV

    • Matt-Pitt

Looking at it, guess I heard something else cause he was no where near it.

    He didn’t touch that ball.

That wasn’t even close, he totally missed it.

    • Drew

      It was pretty close.

  • A.D.

How can the 3rd base ump make that call?

also that was old robbie swinging.

  • John

Me Gusta ese(is that the word, havent taken Spanish since 10th grade, even though it was AP) Robbie

  • V

Eh, excellent at bat, great pitch.

I’d be SCREAMING at Girardi if he let one of our young guys throw 116 pitches in 6 innings, though.

    • Lanny

What does Leyland care? He wants to win now and Jackson has showed he can be dominating after 100 pitches.

      • V

Wow, you really have zero baseball IQ, dontcha?

Come back to me when the d00d’s arm falls off, and he puts up a couple 9 ERA starts.

        • Arman Tamzarian

116 pitches really isn’t that much, besides it’s not like Jackson’s a rookie

          • whozat

It’s a lot. Not a dangerous amount for a guy Jackson’s age, with the stamina he’s built up over the last couple of years, but he should certainly not come out next inning.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

          I can’t believe I’m about to defend Lanny, but…

He did say “What does Leyland care?” He seems to be saying there’s reasons why LEYLAND would burn Jackson’s arm out, evidence of it being a bad idea to the contrary.

Lanny didn’t say he agreed or disagreed with you, just that Leyland does.

    • Accent Shallow

Guys in the booth predicted the slider to end it. That was a bit frustrating. Still, good to see Robbie battle. He hasn’t hit Jackson well in the past.

  • http://www.nowlive.com/desktop/default.aspx?id=100330797 Joey H

This is the kind of game I want to see Girardi get thrown out of to try to wake this team up.

    • JobaWockeeZ

He only got thrown out once last year right? Yeah he really should get the team to wake up, make them have a lust to friggin win.

      • http://www.nowlive.com/desktop/default.aspx?id=100330797 Joey H

Is there sarcasm in that? And I think once maybe twice.

        • JobaWockeeZ

No, no sarcasm. He should get thrown out to get the Yankees all riled up.

      • Lanny

Girardi do something to get the team fired up??? Doubtful. Theres no stat for it. If its not in the book, he doesn’t do it.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Maybe there’s a stat that says getting thrown out has no affect on a team performing better or worse.

Wouldn’t surprise me if a manager getting tossed has no quantifiable effect and is more old-school tautological bunk.

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Rebecca-Optimist Prime

        • http://9thinning.blogspot.com VO

Exactly I don’t think Girardi will let Hughes go out after he has pitched 100 through 6.

    • 27 this year

yea, that is what I want, Hughes and Melancon showing this team how to pitch.

      • kSturnz

you gotta take that pitch for the team Ramiro

    • Accent Shallow

I say Hughes, although that depends if he gets Guillen or the next hitter.

  • Drew

There’s no bullshit with Singy, unlike another announcer we have.

  • 27 this year

Hughes has been great. One thign he needs to work on is trying to stay out of deep counts. He is going almost 3-2 on every hitter. Finish guys off with fewer pitches. Other than that, he is spot on both command and velocity for the most part.

  • Buddy

if it remains 0-0… Who is the Yanks first guy outta the pen? thoughts?

    • http://9thinning.blogspot.com VO

I know I might sound too precautious right here but, I don’t really want to hurt his arm. Does anyone know what was the most he has pitched this year?

      • Drew

        105 5 days ago.

        • http://9thinning.blogspot.com VO

Hmm, I’m not sure it’s a tuff choice. This is why I’m not manager. Once in MLB 09 Chien-Ming Wang gave up a game tying homer in the 9th, so I made him stay out their until the game was over in the 31st. With 312 pitches.

          • Kelvz

now i know why Wang’s been struggling.. hmmmm…

    • Nick

looks like he will come back out for the 7th

  • 27 this year

nice job through six Hughes, you think Girardi lets him pitch the 7th? After all we need someone to bridge the game to Melancon adn than Mo.

  • Matt-Pitt

Hughes has given us everything we could ask for tonight. Now is the time to jump on this bullpen and get this kid the W.

  • Nick

i heard he is good for 110 pitches

Yepp that’s what his AAA pitching coach said.

    hughes!!!

    • Corey (Nord-Podberesky)

tigers have a more than decent line up

    • V

      Wait, what?

      Decent lineup? Like, uh, Granderson/Polanco/Ordonez/Cabrera?

      • Drew

Inge is the hottest hitter in baseball I think.

    • whozat

Isn’t “a decent lineup” the one thing the Tigers DO have?

If you’d said “a more patient lineup”, I might have agreed with you. Your comment is just the whining of someone who wants to consider a 22 year old a bust already, even though it’d be foolish to do so.

    • Accent Shallow

I dunno, Detroit’s 1-5 is more or less beyond reproach, and Laird and Inge have been hot so far this year. Not like he’s facing the Nationals, or even the bottom third of the Yankees lineup.

  • Raf

seriously its time to get a run in and get this kid a win.

  • southernyankeefan

    there ya go swish.

  • Matt-Pitt

Nice way to leadoff the inning. Lets score here.

  • Ivan

    Great job by Hughes.

      Melancon, he throws strikes. Allegedly.

  • JobaWockeeZ

Whatever you do don’t put Swisher in 2nd and get the HR.

  • Nick

looks like Hughes is coming back out for the 7th

  • Drew

    PR for swish!

  • Mike HC

Hughes is light years ahead compared to where he was last year. This start could not have gotten much better. The team is looking strong in my opinion and I think it will be reflected in their record relatively soon.

JEEBUS, MOLINA, WHAT ARE YOU DOING JUMPING OUT OF THE WAY?!?!?!?!?

HBP is probably the best way for Jose to actually get on base.

    • Joey

There you is. Not sure if you’ve posted it yet, but I’d like to get you’re quick take on the Jets draft (i.e. Sanchez)

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Loved it. Sanchez makes this QB competition far less dicey as he’s clearly a capable NFL starter at worse, and we didn’t really give up much of anything (the 2nd rounder is a fair price, and the three players (Coleman/Ratliff/Elam) are all disposable backups.

Moving up for Greene was also beautiful. He’s the most physical RB in the draft (even more than Beanie, IMO) and while moving up again probably cost us the right to take a WR, I’m not sure there were many good WR’s left at that point anyway.

Slauson is a big mauler who Callahan knows… may turn out to be something.

Could you not tell from draft day itself that I was a big fan of the Jets draft?
