Game 9: Game Thread II
ByDiscussion of the Yanks/Rays rubber game continues here. A third run would be nice, but don’t expect more from Pettitte. This is what he is right now, and if he can give up the hits while limiting the damage and going innings, the Yanks will take it.

Swish at the dish.
I’d be happy to see a nice bomb right now.
damn it teixeira
You have to wonder if these deep fly balls would be HR’s in the new stadium.
Probably not.
No, more hoping one of them turns into a homerun here.
Let’s see a hung change.
I know they don’t “need” this game, but it would be nice to go home with a winning record…and a better record then the Rays.
come on JoPo.
The offense doesn’t look great today…missing Nady really doing that much?
No, they just ran into good pitching.
Is Sonnanstine that good?
He is today.
Ok…Wakefield pitched a no-no into the 8th. it happens. people get hot.
Giambi wouldn’t have caught that.
As long as it stays close we have a chance right up until the 9th. They don’t exactly have a very overpowering or intimidating closer. Hopefully it won’t come to that though
Nice Andy
I really wish Kay didn’t laugh.
especially the long dragged out ones
It sounds like hes grasping for air.
Andy getting nicer as the game goes on.
would you say that any is getting more “dandy”?
no, i would not.
: ———-(
Pinocchio?
Pettite
Ah…you know they’re related?
third run would be nice, but don’t expect more from Pettitte. This is what he is right now, and if he can give up the hits while limiting the damage and going innings, the Yanks will take it.
Um, what? This what Pettite has always been.
Today – 6 innings 6 Hits.
Carrer – 9.4 Hits/9.
That’s how he rolls.
Carrer = Career
Here comes the all grit-no hit black hole 7-8-9 yankees….
/Sarcasm
David Cone is in Gardner’s head
Yes’s gun is so bad. Was that pitch a minute ago really 60 mph.. give me a break.
Was anyone else laughing their ass off when Michael Kay said “It’s not comparing apples to oranges, it’s like comparing apples to ducks!”
No, I must have been busy turning the volume off…I kid, I kid.
Who was that who just gave Joe Nelson credit for daring to throw a strike to big bad Brett Gardner? Good grief.
He was giving him credit for throwing his breaking pitch in a 3-1 count. As in, if gardy gets on, he creates havoc on the base baths.
Yeah, I guess… Still not really seeing it. It’s just funny to hear someone give credit to a pitcher for being willing to challenge Grit Gritner.
I didn’t know they made cowbell Necklaces.
They’re usually worn by Fenway patrons.
Eh, if anything, this ensures the top of the order leads off next inning.
I’m looking for Molina to split the outfielders with one of his doubles.
okay.. maybe not
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Hopefully, Molina at least makes Balfour work a little. I know that’s a pipe dream.
nice job laying off that pitch. though he would have swung
can we get a genetics company to splice molina and po together?
http://tinyurl.com/df2k4v
but we can’t have him…we could have a scientifically combined polina.
but we can’t have him…
Are you an idiot? Melky and Kennedy can get anyone!11!
sweet! I say Melky and Ransom
heh, icwudt
What harm would Molina walking into the batter’s box without a bat really do?
Molina should dive into the plate every time and try to get hit by a pitch.
Faster typer gets the joke
takes away the threat of HBP…
How? He could still be hit by a pitch without holding a bat. It does bring a walk into play.
I think Molina might be the perfect case study. It’s not like he’s going to beat out any balls in the infield and a fair amount of his hits are singles anyway. If he actually made a pitcher throw more than 2 or 3 pitches, he might have a shot at getting on base more than a glacially slow, poor-man’s Tony Womack.
Sadly, this isn’t entirely in jest.
Which part isn’t in jest, Molina isn’t really glacially slow?
I would say he really should just take every pitch…(with a bat)…run up counts, get an occasional walk…
Went to college with Tony Womack. Really nice guy.
He ranks up there with World B Free for us
another brilliant comment from Kay. No, you can’t get better at catching…it is strictly hereditary.
Oh no not Veras!!
99 MPH!!!!!!
One more for Pettitte?
Guys, I just got an idea. Since we dealt Jose Tabata for an 89 win season and a season of part-time RF play (or so we thought), let’s try the whole “trade prospects for short-term roster patching” thing again to replace Nady!
Sell high on swisher for 1st round pick each year for the next 5 years.
HAHAH LOLZZ
Ok top of the order. It WILL be done.
How much would it hurt for Andy to pitch a 9 inning loss here giving up only 3 runs?
8 inning?
why 8? did he already get pulled?
quality start nonetheless.
How
much would it hurtfor Andy to pitch an98 inningloss here giving up only 3 runsgem here tonight? If they’re going to do it, now is the time. top ‘o the order.
Yay.
I heard Jeter’s got an edge.
johnny D bunt??
Jeter has really started this year with power
NO WILLY MAYS CATCH THAT TIME YOU BASTARD! As Michael Kay would say.. .GLIDDDDE BABY GLIDEEEEE
Captain clutch, but can Damon get him over to third?
Beautiful! Another ball over their heads.
BUT HOW!?!?!! TEH UPTON IS SO SMOOTH!!111!!
Watch Damon lay down a bunt and piss off 98% off the RAB comment crew.
The way he’s been hitting so far this year I think a bunt is the best option
Haha, what do I know. Go Johnny go.
Or watch him not be stupid and hit a double to drive in the tying run. Much better, no?
I love Joe Girardi for not bunting.
fuxky yes!!!
Weeehooooo! NO BUNT!
BTW, he’s really lagging with the flu.
Steroids.
IETC
DAMON! Good thing I didn’t bench him today.
I have J.P. Howell in my lineup, bah!
Not bunting = Good baseball.
Damonnnnn!! Big hit.
C’mon Tex, this is the time to step up with a big at bat here.
I kinda like these yankees.
wooooo yes johnny! I love howell
w00t~!
It’s nice to have RISP this season.
Howell regression to mean continues
PS: HAY HOWELL U SUK LOL
WTF DONT BUNT
It was just to try the 3B in he didn’t look to square until it was obvious he wasnt going to swing
Come on Tex. Time for some goods, just hit it deep. get jonny to 3rd.
oh home
I love these 09 Yankees. Working the count productively.
lol wtf…tex shows bunt
What happened to let loose on 3-0 Tex? lol
Woohoo catwalk!
Gotta love them f’n catwalks.
Walk kitty kitty walk..
Haha. Thank you, Tropicana Field.
lucky catwalk
Got to love the catwalk.
I loved the bench’s reaction to Tex showing bunt.
which was?
I HATE LIVING IN ALABAMA!!!
what happened with the catwalk?
Lol girardi and Long looked at eachother like wtf?
And a can o’ corn to crawford hit the cat walk and fell in the crowd.
That was fortunate. Now tex goes yard.
Confidence level = 10.
LET’S-GO, YANK-EES!!!
*clap-clap clap-clap-clap*
LET’S-GO, YANK-EES!!!
*clap-clap clap-clap-clap*
gotta love the catwalks
fuck
That was inside!!! gameday says so.
3rd strikeout looking?
Fill in the blank
BU_T!!!
teh bust
A clean cut man with waxed eyebrows doesn’t exactly look scary screaming. But lets go Swish.
OMG please walk swisher to pitch to posada.
Look at this, this really shows the strength of multiple legit switch hitters in the heart of the lineup.
So true.
And I emphasize that they aren’t Melky like switch hitters who couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat. We are talking about guys who are legit run producers with 25+ HR pop.
i’m getting a kick out of the girl behind home reading harry potter
oh damn…that’s amazing.
Gotta expect something outside over the plate here.
Guess he wasn’t expecting it.
Sick change…
Did I just hear a Nelson Muntz ‘ha-ha’?
son of a bitch
Doesn’t the pitch by pitch annoy you people too? I mean if the sequence and result sucked the first time around, it won’t be any better the second.
I don’t mind it when it’s one of our guys striking someone out.
Good point. But in a close game I want to see the next sequences of pitches not the last.
come on jorgeee
And if Joe wants to kiss this game goodbye he’ll put Veras in there.
Mama NOOO
I am looking forward to Cano blasting another ball. maybe not a homerun, but something good.
How far do we think Cano is from becoming elite given his apparent work ethic and improvement(and yes wise asses I do understand we are 9 games in)
I think he will emerge, but it’s too early to consider it now. Ask again in September.
Walk Cano to pitch to Gardner…
Now Look at this, In less than a week we won’t have to be like SH*TTTTT Ransom and Gardner up next when we are looking to rally. When this lineup gets longer it will be fun to watch.
mother fucker. real clutch hitting with a guy on 2nd no outs
Urgh, now the offensive black holes are due up in the 9th, and Jose Veras is in all probability pitching the 8th. I don’t know which of those is the scariest.
F’ that. Send Dandy Andy out there for one more.
Told you.
Well at least its tied.
Now after this put Bruney in there, Give them a totally different look. Up 8-10 MPH on the fastball and a Look from a different side.
PSYCHIC!
PSYCHIC!
Sorry I don’t know why it did that…
It’s called smart managing. Even Joe Girardi can do it if he tries real hard.
I wander if in those picnic areas they have a eat at your own risk policy. For example, if a fly ball lands in your cheeseburger, hot dog or what have you they will not refund.
That is a strange thing to wonder.
Not as strange as why Damon isn’t playing when he has the flu.
BURN.
Agreed?
Yeah, sick burn. lol
Yeah, I’m with the Congressman, that’s a burn of epic proportions.
http://highschool.rivals.com/c.....CID=935825
I heart this version of Brian Bruney. That heater is explosive.
Lazer Beams…on Sharks
Over under 40LBS for Bruney? UNDER! Over Under 94mph On the fast ball? OVER!
Question: How deep in the park in terms of the Cat Walk must the ball hit before it’s considered a HR?
Here you go:
http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/t....._rules.jsp
Great find. Thanks.
They talked about it in the first game. I think the second set back is consider a homerun, but it needs to hit in fair territory.
Its the 3rd catwalk I believe, basically the catwalk that it has to hit would be a HR anyways.
I think there’s 4 rings of catwalks and if it hits either of the outer ones it’s a HR.
There are different catwalks. If it hits cat walk X or Y its in play, if it hits catwalk Z its a HR. I don’t know if you got that but there is a bunch of catwalks up there.
Bruney, filthy
TEH JOBA 8TH!!1!1
Bruney! That should shut up those annoying B-Jobbers.
Bruney really has some giddyup on that fastball eh?
Bruney is so selfish, just out there to pad his K totals.
Holy Brian Bruney
So nasty of all a sudden.
When that asshole Reyonalds said the Yankees STILL HAVE PROBLEMS GETTING TO MARIANO!!!!11!
Sorry. Wrong Reply.
When exactly did Bruney become so freakin’ good?
Last year.
Some time during 07 and 08, hehe.
When that asshole Reyonalds said the Yankees STILL HAVE PROBLEMS GETTING TO MARIANO!!1!!11!!!!
when he lost all that weight? see spring training optimism stories work sometimes!
Bunt, dammit.
Let it hit you, dammit.
What’s Jeter’s OPS without HBP? he seems to take a few…
Let’s butcher boy here. Steal a base. Start the rally all over.
I mean. I’m not sure if I take a pitch here. If he had a fat one drive it. Never mind he too,
And that is exactly why.
or strikeout
Brian Bruney -#38 RHP
0-0, 3.60 ERA
8 Pictches – 7 Strikes, 1 Balls
Out pitch – FRICKIN SHARKS WITH FRICKIN LASERBEAMS ATTACHED TO THEIR HEADS
Average fastball – 94.1 mph
YES!!! fricken Laserbeams on sharks’ heads.
Brett should have taken one for the team there
BRUNEY!!! Muoy caliente!
10Ks in 5 IP
Bruney is as nasty as Gardner’s swing.
sweet. i chuckled.
Percival is in, excellent
Definitely happy sight compared to what the other guys have done to us
*SQUINTS* WHERES DUHH PLATE!??!11?!?!
I still laugh at that Avis commercial. The awkward silence at the end is the best.
You guys ready to rent some caaaaahhhhhs?
I won’t lie, i actually hate that commercial.
AGH! Gardner…game day pitch spot looks like a frickin’ sparkler…why won’t they just blow fast balls by him and get it over with???
WTF why no Matsui
he hit already and walked the other inning
ahh i missed that when coming home from work, maybe I should read the boxscore.
they pinch ran for him
He already pinch hit (walk) in this game…Ransom came in to pinch run for him and play 3B.
Now, Do they throw Bruney back out there? Supposing the Yankees don’t score.
Cmon CO-Dog
Wow. Alex who? Haha.
YAY!!
Cody “FUCKIN” Ransom
Let’s love Ransom again!
Jerk. flip floppper. John Kerry.
Nice.
Who the hell starts off Cody with a curve?
Its about time handsome cody ransom
Cody Ransom, not completely useless.
Just got this trade offer:
BCOP trades Nick Swisher, NYY 1B to Connection
CONY trades Emilio Bonifacio, Fla 2B to Optimists Prime
I’m BCOP. I really really love Swisher but I know he’ll probably regress.
I know nothing about Bonifacio except that he’s doing really well right now
What do I do?
Keepers?
No
Then I’d just keep Swish. I really think the worst is behind him, at least for this year.
both likely to regress lol idk i probably wouldn’t do it. swish is more proven than him
Both are going to regress, Swisher has job security to be in the lineup every day, Bonafacio gives you steals, but could easily be replaced by Amezega or shifting Cantu to 3rd if he struggles.
attaboy ransom! get him in now you fucks
Great hitting by Cody Ransom, unfortunately the worst hitter in the history of baseball* is up behind him.
*This may be an exaggeration
I think the worst hitter in the history of baseball just got that double.
You guys remember that walk off HBP against I think Oakland last year?
YES i do.. that was an awkward win
Talk about a “YEAH LETS GO BABY! LETS GET THIS ONE IN THE BOOKS” to … *Gulp?*
now i have seen it all.
…we’re gonna have Rivera in a tie game, aren’t we?
Nevermind.
JETERIAN CLUTCH
nope!
Owned.
damn nice pick by the catcher
FUCK and YES!!!!!!
The captain, EL CAPITAN.
beat me to it
Yankees should have retired numbers day where player wear a retired number of a Yankee that played their position.
that would be pretty cool
That would be interesting.
Tangible.
enter sandman
Jeet just skeeted all over Perci
EL CAPITAN
Jeter is getting his pimp stroke back!!!
Thank you captain
So Jeterian….
jeet baby
Jeter comes up big again.
Jetes coming through again….just when everyone was ready to write him off!
Jetes coming through again….just when everyone
was ready to writehad already written him off!Mo be praised!
Come on Sandman!
Jeter is sooooooooooooo clutch.
I mean, I’m a HUGE Yankee fan but for what ever reason, Jeter isn’t my favorite player but SHIT can the guy get it done when it matters.
Sometimes he can.
Of course, when he doesn’t do it, it was bad luck. When somebody else (A-Rod anyone?) does it, it was luck.
What say we enjoy a nice moment without bringing up the A-Rod/Jeter talk, huh?
Jeter has been on these last 2 nights.
Stupid YES gun, Mo doesn’t throw 61 MPH
Isn’t the wrong 42 out there?
I was scared for a second that Bruney would be closing.
i’m still slightly scared. Mo hasn’t pitched in awhile.
For some weird reason beyond proportions, I have a weird feeling about this bottom of the 9th.
that makes no sense.. praise be to MO
No I know. I just had a weird feeling. *Self slap* Get the fuck out of here. We’ve got Mo out there.
ye of little faith
….feeling gone
HERETIC HERETIC!
It’s nice when your captain can actually hit baseballs well.
Aside from the Red Sox, do any other teams actually have captains?
It was purely meant as a shot at 2008 All-Star Jason Varitek.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.....m_Captains
Delgado was for Toronto back in the day, and Mike Sweeney used to be for KC
that’s a shot at Varitek.
Interesting putting Melk in for Swish, who is a solid defender.
Me love Melky
I’m calling it right now: Dan Uggla for NL MVP.
I’ll one up you. Nick Swisher for AL MVP.
where did that come from? yanks about to win a game…and
Heh, sorry, the beauties of MLB.TV. The guy seems to be delivering two-out hits with RISP almost every time up; that should up his RBI totals and have the BBWAA salivating.
After last year I secretly hoped Rivera Mo didnt come in if it was tied.
Does anyone else play Enter the sandman during away games or is it just me…
I think that’s just you. However, I do play New York New York in my head when they win.
For all of you too young to remember the 90′s teams, that’s what it was like EVERY DAMN NIGHT!!!
Now, time to watch Seinfeld on the VCR.
VCR? Is that like a record player or something?
I believe it’s a whales penis.
Was there ever any doubt with Mo?
I love Mariano.
5-4 on the road trip. Awesome.
mo be the mo
Giambi would not have made that play.
He sure as hell wouldn’t have run to the bag.
The 2009 Yankees are fucking awesome.
All fucking right. Nice way to head home for the big home opener.
yankees win…the-e-e-e-e yankees win
Hell of a win! too bad Andy didn’t get the win, he deserved it!
Reason #789340471783620378279138652038 why the win-loss statistic is fucking moronic in regards to judging a pitcher’s success and/or failure.
THANK YOU!
So, where are all you people that were bitching about the first game of the series?
They’re hiding in a fallout shelter, waiting for the end of the season.
5-4 solid start all things considered (9 straight on the road, TB 4-5, BOS 3-6)
Bruney:14 straight outs, 10 of them strike outs. Joba isn’t even that good.
Blasphemy!!! How dare you insult the great Joba 2 da 8th!!!
“Start Spreading the news..”
I love it. The Yanks have won the last 2 series against KC and TB. That’s what it takes. Let’s continue that streak and hope the home stand can be even better.
I can’t wait for tomorrow. could you image a tribe sweep? so nice
This team has some moxie to it… I like.
This team never quits. There’s nothing better that you can say about a team.
love how happy everyone in the dugout was for ransom. this is a team
Now onto the Cleveland series. I cant wait til Pavano pitches in the stadium. I hope he is booed so loudly and mercilessly that he starts to cry
I second that, then he gets “injured” after giving up 5 or 6 runs
in the bottom of hte first…
Good win there. Good pitching and some timely hitting to win it. It’s only 9 games but Cano has looked on.
Mark Teixeira says I have a laser for an arm.
sharks with lazers
no just a laser. Bruney is the only one equipped with sharks with lasers
Not that it matters much with Mo (yet), but should we be concerned with his velocity? Every pitch in this inning was under 90mph.
I’m usually not one to get into these velocity discussions, and it doesn’t seem like his cutter is any easier to hit with 5mph less on the gun, but maybe age is catching up to him after all.
No, he hasn’t pitched much. He was an easy 94 in spring.
Hes coming off surgery and its only his second game back. Even with the lower velocity he still looks damn good.
NO
An Oli Perez implosion would make this an even better day.
Andy’s losing it.. He’s starting to talk to the ball
am i the only one still bitter about Mo not pitching four outs in KC?
yes.
I do. Mo goes 4 outs all the time. Girardi just likes to keep it cool like they can’t be stretched out or somthing.
No, I’d rather not have my 39-year-old closer who is coming off off-season shoulder surgery attempting a four-out save in rainy, cold, windy weather in the sixth game of the season.
perfect…A++
6-3 would be alot better than 5-4 but good teams move on.
I think if that’s later in the year you see Mo. In the beginning if the season though, I’m all for throwing the rookie into the fire to see what he’s got. You gotta find out what you can get from these guys early in the season so you don’t make the same mistakes later. And yes I know all games count the same, but you know what I mean.
I was too, but someone pointed out to me that Joe has to find out what he has in that pen. So lets hope he learned something.
Lets not forget were another day closer to arod’s return . This is only a few weeks away . Good to be heading home too
Derek Jeter makes me want to be a better person.
God, two fantastic games in a row, even if you weren’t a Yanks fan, it’s just great BBall drama and tension…totally makes up for the blowout.
