Heyman: Yanks push up A-Rod’s target return date

By

While the Yankees won’t officially confirm it yet, Jon Heyman reports that A-Rod will be back a week earlier than expected. The Yanks’ slugger underwent hip surgery on March 9, and while the Yanks originally pegged May 15 as his return date, Rodriguez has responded very well to treatment and rehab. He could begin a rehab assignment by the end of the week and would see Major League game action by the end of next week. It can’t come soon enough for a team in need of a big bat in the middle of their lineup.

  1. Score one for the ‘we kinda already knew that’ filed =D

  2. A.D. says:

Heyman speculating on what has already been speculated.

    • Lanny says:

I dont think this is speculation. Heyman has a line right into Boras’ office and he has great Yankee sources too.

  3. Yankeegirl49 says:

    Not a day too soon!

  4. Mike HC says:

He can not come back soon enough

  5. Frank says:

Unfortunately, this team has more problems than not having A-Rod in the lineup although his return is huge. Hopefully, he’ll stay healthy the rest of the way and put up decent numbers.

    • Expired Milk says:

      Not really

Outside of Wang everything will fix themselves. CC is hitting his stride earleir than last year. Burnett had his first bad start and I doubt he will give up 8ER again.

The bullpen is volatile and theres a number of pieces that will fit in a strong pen.

      • Reggie C. says:

I agree. CC’s start was reason for optimism. Verlander pitched lights-out. Verlander still found himself at almost 110 pitches after 7 innings. Maybe a couple longer at-bats could’ve knocked Verlander out in the sixth. Who knows..

        • Lanny says:

          The pen will fix itself?

          I like your confidence.

          • Expired Milk says:

Its the same pen that “The Yankees’ bullpen, featuring most of the same relievers, last season ranked second in the majors in strikeout rate, fourth in opponents’ OPS and seventh in ERA. Cashman refers to the group as “talented and gifted and probably undersold.”"

  6. leokitty says:

Best news all season. Hopefully this is actually due to his progression and not rushing him, because as we learned at least twice last year rushing = bad.

  7. Tony says:

How pathetic is it that a team fielding at least 5 all-star caliber hitters needs “another big bat in the middle of the lineup”

If they continue to go on 0-23 RISP stretches it won’t make a bit of difference. Check the numbers: the Yankees’ offense is good at everything but actually scoring runs (OBP, AVG, SLG, etc.), and that’s with Ransom/Berroa/Melky/Gardner playing every day.

    • Cor Shep says:

it really boils down to risp seriously.. they could have 4-5 more wins if they only got 1-2 more key hits per games.. so annoying to watch

    • Matt ACTY says:

The Yankees are averaging just over five runs per game, actually. So they’re pretty decent at scoring runs.

      • Tony says:

        Run production – Middling
        Peripherals – Better than that

        Reason – Terrible situational/”clutch” hitting

5 runs only means something if everyone else isn’t scoring 5 runs. It’s an average number right now.

        • Matt ACTY says:

Oh I agree with you that the production could be much better, you’re right about that. But everyone is acting as if the offense can’t hit because they’ve scored just a few runs over the last few games. The offense is also being overshadowed by problems with the pitching. If the Yankees’ pitching weren’t so out of whack right now, the offense would look a whoooooooooole lot better.

    • Mike Pop says:

Heh. The reason the Yanks need him back is because of how Ransom was playing, the CF hole, and when Molina is in. Also, Molina might have to catch more if the pitchers prefer him. Like it was said yesterday, then you have Posada DH and Matsui off the bench. Kind of weird but I guess you could figure it out between Posada/Matsui. Posada put a dagger in my heart with that double play yesterday, though ;(

      • Reggie C. says:

Yeah. Posada is slow. Molina is slower though, so hopefully the next time a yankee catcher can’t leg out a dp grounder, it won’t be too painful a moment in the game.

Anyways, Mats is swinging a better bat of late, and the offense has got to pick up a sliiiiight tick to win tonight for Hughes. Posada should be catching.

        • Lanny says:

Even with 5 all stars, that bottom third of the order isn’t major league caliber.

          • Tony says:

Every team in the majors has a hole somewhere in the lineup. Only in New York (and only for the Yankees) does this pass as an acceptable excuse for anything. There’s a general bad attitude about this franchise right now. Oh noes, we’re 9-10 go pay Mike Cameron 10 mil. Oh noes, Marte gave up a homer move Joba to the bullpen. When did we become the 1918-2003 Red Sox fans? I refuse to be a part of it.

  8. AJ says:

Will A-Rod make a stop in AAA? Or will it be a few Tampa games then right back up to the bigs?

  9. Carl says:

Espn.com Said A-Rod was sliding today. Sorry if posted.

  10. Mike Pop says:

Yanks are still better off without A-Rod…..I’d rather have Eric Hinske. True Yankees.

  11. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Remember in ST when the Yankees were rolling and people suggested that the Yankees may be better off without him? Good times.

  12. UWS says:

In unrelated news, Serena Roberts’ publisher just announced that her tell-all book on Yankees’ disgraced slugger Alex Rodriguez is slated for release approximately a week earlier than previously anticipated.

  13. SamIAmSports says:

I was kinda getting to like the BLACK HOLE at third base….

  14. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Watching Gorman Thomas play centerfield for the 1982 Milwaukee Brewers, that guy couldn’t cover a stamp.

For posterity’s sake, courtesy of none other than A-Rod’s #1 fan, The Sports Guy, Bill Simmons.

    • Jeremy says:

There’s some of the usual SG insanity in there (good karma can win games!) but also a refreshing dose of common sense. I can’t remember the last time I saw any MSM sportswriter point out that talent always wins out over chemistry, or that no one has ever identified a way that ARod actually brings his teammates down.

  16. M.D. says:

why doesnt the espn horse trick work anymore?

  17. E. Aron says:

What’s up with Posada not starting again?

  18. [...] Jon Heyman is reporting the Yankees now think Alex Rodriguez will return May 9th. They’re not saying that officially, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all. Hat tip, River Ave. Blues. [...]

  19. mustang says:

Just a theory, but isn’t the setting perfect for A-Rod to come back the Yankees to take off and for Yankees’ fans to embrace him as their savior.
I know it well take more then A-Rod, but he gets all the blame for everything when things go wrong how about the other way around.
The guy is due and the dumb ass media would eat it up..

    • Joe R says:

No the dumb ass media would just point out how the pitching got better and A-Rod just happen to rejoin the team at the same time and at the time is somehow bringing the offense down.

    • Yankeegirl49 says:

Agreed, I’d love to see them go on a tear with him right in the middle of it!

      • mustang says:

With A-Rod’s off season( him wanting to prove something) + the way the ball is leaving that park= something great is coming.
