"I don’t believe in Spring Training numbers at all, but at what point would it just look kindof silly for Girardi to name Swisher the starter?"

This is the larger issue. I don't think it ever look silly for a manager to completely ignore spring training. If two players are equally healthy, I think that you can toss spring training out the window and do whatever you want, and it is not silly.

When Cashman landed Swisher, the Yankees were quick to say he would not play center field. When they landed Teixeira, they could've named Swisher the starter right then. I would not have thought it silly.

In contrast, I do think it is silly to go with experience, the guy you know, seniority, and so forth. Nady is a good player, so I won't go nuts over it, but Swisher was brought in to offset the patience lost in Abreu and Giambi. He can't do much of that from the bench.

I would’ve given Swisher the starting job and waited until he didn’t do that. That is to say, I would ignore 2008, and give Swisher 2 months, rather than give Nady a month

but why should we ignore 2008? f Swisher had the better spring, then sure. but he didn't. i don't see it.

I also would’ve had Nady playing 3B the last two weeks. I wonder why baseball managers believe their players are so incapable of flexibility.

ok.

If Swisher is within 60-70 slugging points of Nady, maybe more, he is the better player.

right, but my point is he hasn't been since 2007.

shouldn't we wait until Swisher actually does that??

Nady is a hacker. I prefer a player that works the count. And Swisher is a better outfielder.

i've noticed in the game threads that every time Nady comes up and doesn't hit a HR, someone mentions Swisher.

look, Spring Training is now officially over.

Nady hit .311/.354/.508

which looks EXACTLY like his "fluke" 2008 line of .305/.357/.510

Swisher hit .231/.365/.371

which looks disturbingly similar to his "fluke" 2008 line of .219/.332/.410

for the 100th time, i believe Swisher will be the long term option, but MAYBE, just MAYBE we should just give Nady a month???

i mean, Nady had a better 2008 and now a better Spring Training. i don't believe in Spring Training numbers at all, but at what point would it just look kindof silly for Girardi to name Swisher the starter??

Swisher has to win his job back, so we should probably stop bitching about it until he actually does that.

Our best bet is probably to keep Nady for the duration of the year. Sure, we do have Swisher, but Swisher is going to get plenty of playing time with or without Nady. I mean Matsui can hardly run, Damon needs occasional days off, Nady will probably sit against some righties, and in CF don't be surprised to see us go with an OF of Swisher, Damon, Nady when we need some more offense.

If we trade Nady we're really not going to get much back in return. If the Giants are somehow in the playoff picture and want to overspend I'll gladly send him there, but we likely won't get a better trade offer than what we'll get out of keeping Nady and taking the draft pick compensation especially if he has another good year and can get type A status.
