2009 Draft: Tino, Mazzilli to represent Yanks

Via Maury Brown, Tino Martinez & Lee Mazzilli will be on hand to represent the Yankees at the amateur draft next month. This is the second consecutive year Tino will represent the Yanks at the draft, but it will be Mazzilli’s maiden voyage. One of the few special instructors that did something beyond showing up to Spring Training, Tino was promoted to Special Assistant to the General Manager last year and is very involved with the club’s minor league day-to-day activities. All these two will do is smile and wave to the camera when the Yanks pick, and maybe even shake a hand if the player the Yanks draft is actually on hand.

You can see the full list of club representatives here.

Mike, with the draft approaching, have you a better idea on who we may draft than you did 2 months ago? If you can name 3 that we might choose in the first round (based on availability obviously), who will they be?

  • kenthadley

besides this what role does Mazzili have with the Yanks?….interesting list….Moose Skowron, Dick Williams, LaSorda, Bill Virdon……..these guys were done with their playing careers before the first draft in 1965……..well all but the Moose….

  • pat

Hopefully they bring better luck than allan houston.

Lots of former Yankees on that list. Surprised to see Moose Skowron representing the White Sox.

Moose is a Chicago native and a Community Relations Rep for the ChiSox. Makes more sense now – I didn’t know that

A friend of mine used to go out w/Lee Mazilli’s daughter.

Speaking of prospects, Scout.com has their top 100 list out, for anyone interested in taking a look.

Montero came in a surprisingly high #3 (was #4 but Pocello was called up) Austin Jackson was a strong #15 and Austin Romine broke the top 50. Dellin Betances came in at #71.

If you go by position, the Yanks have the #2 and #5 ranked Catcher prospects in Baseball according to them.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

What this tells me is that we need to draft more guys named ‘Austin’.

    • 27 this year

best part is that they rank Daniel Bard under Betances. Finally a site that realizes he isn’t as great but still doesn’t have Melancon which I could live with.

    • pat

Heh, no sox in the top 50.

They messed up and listed Lars Anderson as a Houston prospect. He’s number 27.

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Would have been higher but got off to a slow start this year.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph Pawlikowski

Did they? Or did they just foretell an Oswalt-Anderson swap?

Good thing the Sox don’t have any guys who ever did PED’s, Oswalt wouldn’t abide by that.

Your attention to detail is impeccable, Congressman. My thanks.

I got tired of peeing on the Constitution, needed something else to do. A man can only pee so much.

    • Drew

Nice, good to see we have two guys in the top 15.

    • Mike

wow. i love jesus but i think hanson should be ahead of him, but he should definitely be top 5-10. Jackson at 15 is a little surprising just because of his high K’s and lack of HR’s at AAA, but his avg is great. Romine has shown he has plenty of potential as well

Give the Yanks credit. How hard is it to find good hitting catchers, they’re worth their weight in gold on the trade market, and the Yanks have two of them. Plus a good defensive backstop in Cervelli. If Cervelli could become a better hitter, which is possible (.273/.371/.381 career in minors) then they would really be swimming in them.

What is the point of having anyone from the team there at all if Selig is going to announce all the picks every year? If he wants to make the draft in to watchable television, Selig is going to have to give his infatuation with himself a rest.
