A Supreme Yankee fan

By

Earlier today, President Obama announced he will nominate Sonia Sotomayor, a current judge on the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, to replace outgoing Supreme Court Justice David Souter. While politics is not often within the purview of River Ave. Blues, Sotomayor has ties to something near and dear to our hearts. She grew up in the South Bronx and has been a lifelong Yankee fan.

She is also credited with saving baseball in 1995 when she issued an injunction barring the owners from imposing a unilateral collective bargaining agreement on the striking players. Her actions spurred baseball players back onto the field as the two sides continued to negotiate, and had she not ruled as she did, the owners could have escalated the labor fight by fielding teams of replacement players. So Sotomayor is a baseball supporter and a Yankee fan. Sounds good to me. (Hat tip to Shysterball for finding the 1995 Times article.)

Whizzo is all for Yankees fans dominating every aspect of life on this earth.

Whizzo proposes the Yankees hook up the good Judge with NY embroidered robes.

Or the team could offer to let cases be argued in the Legends seats; they might as well use ‘em for something…

  2. Jorge Steinbrenner says:

I think she should declare Dustin Pedroia unconstitutional.

  3. Smitt Dogg says:

How about 85th term abortions, only for Mrs. Papelbon?

  4. Gary says:

She didnt f*cking save baseball. She made an elementary ruling that any judge would have made given the relevant facts. God. Ppl act like she sat down and negotaited the détente herself.

    • In reality, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa saved baseball. But sitting in our high and mighty perch 11 years after the fact, we’re not allowed to acknowledge that because of teh steroidz!!!one11!

    • Gary says:

Yes, I spelled negotiate wrong and accented détente. I’m a man of contradiction.

  5. Rich I. says:

I’m not trying to start an argument or play down Sotomayor’s achievements. But are we really all excited about a Supreme Court Justice nominee just because she’s a Yankees fan and she supposedly “saved baseball”? Shouldn’t we be more concerned with her position on the important economic and moral issues facing our country and the world?

    /rant

    • Actually, no. If this were an article in the Atlantic or Newsweek, then yes. But this is a Yankees blog, so the fact that she’s a Yankees fan and played a role in the end of MLB’s most recent labor stoppage are really the only relevant news items.

      • Accent Shallow says:

Agreed 100%. If this were a political blog, this would be one of the main threads of the day, and we’d be having a lively debate about her qualifications/rulings and jurisprudence in general. Since it isn’t, it’s a side note that only gets a mention because of her connection to baseball/the Yankees.

Despite Ben/Joe/Mike’s discredited socialist agenda, they’ve made it clear that this isn’t the proper place for political debate, and we should respect that.

  6. r.w.g. says:

I really, really have a serious problem with this post.

Sonia Sotomayor is a dangerous person to the Constitution of the United States and the general rule of law, as she has stated on record that she believes the Appeals Court is where policy is made.

You baseball bloggers should educate yourselves before you make stupid little throwaway posts like this.

Left or right, whatever your god damn politics are, policy isn’t made on the bench and I’m deeply troubled by the casual nature with which you declare the nominee “okay in your book”.

    • Zack says:

It’s not about Right or Left, considering the first Bush originally appointed her to Federal District Court

      • r.w.g. says:

Absolutely. George W. Bush is dangerous to the Constitution. I really hope that’s the point you’re trying to make instead of trying to play a sort of gotcha game to determine my own personal politics..?

        • Zack says:

This whole post wasnt about politics, it was just about a woman who grew up from the south bronx and a yankee fan was appointed to supreme court. If you have a problem with her go to cnn.com or foxnews.com and write about her there.

      • Luthien says:

Yes, and we all know how much of a righty the first Bush was….

I leave you with this clip:

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Why not rant in a political forum or something? Most of us don’t want to hear it.

      • r.w.g. says:

You know.. I gotta be honest..

If someone is a danger to the Constitution, they have to be confronted everywhere they are, everywhere they are mentioned.

Otherwise.. you end up with no gold standard, failing currency, government owning business and rewriting contracts at whim.. pretty much everything happening now.

If only somebody would have spoke up. But hey, nobody wanted to hear it.

        • “If someone is a danger to the Constitution, they have to be confronted everywhere they are, everywhere they are mentioned.”

No, they really don’t. Go write a letter to the editor of your local paper, or start your own blog, or comment at redstate or something. RAB is NOT the appropriate forum for this stuff.

        • pat says:

Wait, wait, wait, wait, this blog post is going to lead to:
no gold standard, failing currency, government owning business and rewriting contracts at whim.. pretty much everything happening now.

          THAT’s F*CKING INSANE!!!!

          • lmao

Now you shall witness the true firepower of this fully operational baseball blog.

          • r.w.g. says:

Well.. you can make fun of me all you want. You can distort what I said to fit your snarky remarks.

But that doesn’t change that those things are happening right now. And it is because nobody asked hard questions or educated themselves, or took the time to ask if what the government was doing was even Constitutional.

            • JobaWockeeZ says:

And to think I hated Lanny. I think I can appreciate him more for at least staying on topic.

              • r.w.g. says:

There isn’t a need for the word hate, or to denegrate my person. I haven’t espoused specific political views, just honest critcism of judicial activism.

              • tim randle says:

he is on topic…this post is about her. he’s commenting on her, and replies about his comments led to here.

if i said ‘bandbox’ or ‘joba to teh 8th’ then I would be out of turn.

                and since i’m already typing…

seriously, if CMW gets his shit together (as in, pitching like the legit #2 we’d thought he’d be), why WOULDN’T we want to go with a four man starting with CC that only had to go 7 innings each night? CC, CMW, AJ, Phranchise OR CC on 4 days…with Joba and Mo. I just don’t get it.

its always about your best pitcher, right? would you rather have CC or Joba? CC on four days rest or Phil?

Regular season, we need five great guys and a back up (or two!) for all those things we’ve seen go wrong so far…but once playoff time comes…

I’LL BE LEGISLATIN’ FROM THE BENCH, BIATCH!!!

            • TomG says:

Yes, you will be made fun of for climbing on a soapbox in a baseball forum and insisting that the you are the only person educated enough to see the coming apocalypse. You will mercilessly teased for this every time.

              • r.w.g. says:

I’ll just add it to the list of the police departments who have already questioned me about the Ron Paul bumper stickers on my car.

Maybe you can visit me in the Gulag. : )

            • pat says:

I didn’t distort what you said to fit my snarky comments.

              What you said-
If someone is a danger to the Constitution, they have to be confronted everywhere they are, everywhere they are mentioned.

I assume your activity on this particular thread is a well intentioned attempt to confront this threat because it is mentioned here on RAB. I’m fine with that, to each his own.

              You then said-
Otherwise.. you end up with no gold standard, failing currency, government owning business and rewriting contracts at whim.. pretty much everything happening now.

So forgive me for following your logic which led me to beleive if threats to the Constitution are not confronted wherever they are, (such as in a blurb here on RAB) a bunch of crazy shit is gonna go down.
My bad for taking you literally.

      r.w.g. = right wing guy

      • r.w.g. says:

well.. it actually stands for my own nominal initials. but that’s probably a somewhat applicable, if overly simplified assessment.

    • Steve says:

Edited by RAB. Oh hell no. A personal attack from a first-time commenter on a long-time commenter? Doesn’t fly at RAB.

      • Mike R. - Retire 21 says:

I disagree. His intelligence is evident in his comments. I think he just lacks common sense.

        • pat says:

Word,I think RWG is very passionate about protecting the Constitution, which in my eyes is a very admirable. This just isn’t the place for sustained political discussion.

      • r.w.g. says:

No, sir, I am not. Leave personal attacks out of the argument. If you disagree with me, that’s fine. But to just label someone stupid when you don’t have the foggiest idea of my educational background, professional background, or personal and material standing in the world.. well, that’s pretty stupid.

I really have to say.. I’m surprised the criticism of judicial activism has gotten folks riled up. I would think it would resonate with Americans regardless of their particular party affiliation or personally held political beliefs. I’m not defining my positions on anything controversial.. unless you believe strict adherence to the Constitution is a debatable issue.

He trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, and kind.

          He lives vicariously through himself.

He will never tire in his God-given mission to fight for truth, justice, and the American Way on the internet.

He is r.w.g, Defender of the Constitution.

          USA! USA! USA!

          • Ok. Ok. Let’s all calm down. Everyone is entitled to his or her own political opinion, and no one’s opinion is more or less right or wrong than anyone else’s. Stop beating up on each other and stop arguing politics.

This is a conversation more suitable for the Fark politics tab than for RAB.

          • r.w.g. says:

Doug, I’m not going to slam you or insult you, like you are trying to do to me.

I just want a government that is wholly restrained by the Constitution. And you obviously think it’s a big joke. I don’t know if you have any family that has lost their wealth as a result of the Federal Reserve and it’s illegal manipulation of the money supply and creation of fake bubble economies.. but I’m sure you’ll feel it when the dollar sinks like a fucking stone after they start up those printing presses.

        • Don’t worry about Steve. Just a troll. Won’t happen again.

        • Mike R. - Retire 21 says:

If you read this with Keith Olberman’s rant voice it’s actually kind of entertaining. Remember to emphasize the “sir”.

  7. Ugh, Ben. You just couldn’t help yourself, you had to post this. I blame you for the fact that I just read the mighty mighty r.w.g.’s comments on this topic. (kidding)

  8. El Generalissimo says:

Not to mention your not the only one here who has judicial knowledge and political opinions… but most of us acknowledge this isn’t the place for political discussion, as it is a Yankee blog.

Most of us would be more then happy to debate the merits on the SCOTUS blog though… assuming there were 1000 created just today.

  9. UWS says:

Holy shit, Ben makes an innocent post about a potential SCOTUS member being a big Yankee fan and all hell breaks loose.

Ben, you have further tarnished the credibility of this socialist blog.

    • What’s even funnier is that nothing I’ve said is a disputable fact. Sotomayor was in fact announced as a nominee to the Supreme Court and she did in fact issue that injunction. She’s also, in fact, a baseball fan and a Yankee fan just like Justice Alito.

Politics, even in facts, certainly draws out some strong opinions.

  10. LiveFromNewYork says:

I support the lightheartedness of the post and the (usual) policy of RAB to stay out of politics. That being said I like this nominee for many reasons but being a Yankee fan heads the list.

And I’m not arguing with anyone about it. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

  11. Jim G says:

I’m glad she saved baseball and glad she is a yankee fan. I love to see her sitting in the stands at the Stadium.
But judges who make law from the bench is not what we need.

  12. Ibis says:

Edited by RAB. Yeah, no, name-calling will not fly.

  13. AlexNYC says:

I hope that when she gets elected, she can fine $2,000 to every B-Jobber and $5,000 to Papelbon when he does acts like a douche.
