Guys…I’m scared…I’m starting to like Melky this season…

But…Melky has to suck! That Gardner guy is good! :P

Biggest AB of your young career Ramiro. Happy Cinco de Mayo.

Peter Gammons is trying to get the crew chief on the phone. Time to call the game!

Did anybody realize that before tonight Melky had 4 extra base hits, and they were all home runs? 2 doubles tonight… weird.

Kay had been waiting on that one.

Say Pena walks–pinch hit Gardner for Molina? The DP would be a killer (obviously).

      No catcher.

        Francisco Cervelli

Might be a good idea in the abstract, but there’s no way Molina is coming out of this coming unless a)he gets hurt, or b)it goes to extras

Gaaah Ramiro you just laid off that twice.

Fuck, I really wanted to see the squeeze there.

    • V

      Ditto, but Swish = slow.

  • SouthernYankeeFan

He had to swing at that after that curve ball called a strike.

  • 27 this year

    fuck

  • Raf

tough call for strike two but ball four to Swisher could’ve gone the other way like that one.

    • MattG

If you’re watching Game Day, Swisher’s was ball four, and Pena’s was ball three. It is what it is.

  • Yankee1010

I couldn’t have less confidence in Molina here. I hope to God I’m wrong.

    • JobaWockeeZ

      Well don’t worry. You are.

  • Drew

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a decent pinch hitter.

  • Bill N.

i fail to see how that’s a ball and that curve was a strike

  • Accent Shallow

Beckett has really been walking a tightrope. This must be what facing Andy Pettitte feels like.

  • Ivan

Well we just had the wrong hitters up in dat spot.

  • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

    Damn.

  • SouthernYankeeFan

Damnit there is no reason not to score a run there WTF.

    • manimal

Except you know, the black hole.

  • Andrew

    Another miracle for the Sox

  • J

how do the red sox have players that can steal home and the yanks can’t tie the fucking game with men on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out? FUCK.

  • Yankee1010

Man, Molina is a horrifically awful hitter. It’s only made worse by him being an even worse runner.

I hope they actively seek another catcher. Even if Posada comes back healthy in a few weeks, would it be so awful to have a backup catcher who isn’t a complete automatic out?

    • JobaWockeeZ

Yeah name a catcher that we can actually get that isn’t a black hole. At least Molina is great defensively.

      • Yankee1010

What about Miguel Montero for starters?

Also, yes, Molina is pretty good defensively, but that is so ridiculously outweighed by how awful he is with the bat. This was also something that could have been addressed in the offseason. I’m not saying that it would be easy, but they can’t just stand pat and continue to hope that Molina will be something other than a complete offensive albatross.

        • V

          Wanna trade Hughes for him?

They ain’t giving him away, because the Yankees would like him. Even if Cashman asks nicely.

          • Yankee1010

There is no way they’re going to look for Hughes. They don’t really play Montero that much anyway and it’s not like that team doesn’t need help. That was just the first guy I could think of right now, but I refuse to believe that there is not a better option than Molina.

        • Accent Shallow

There’s only room for one Montero in the Yankees system.

On a serious note, I’d imagine the cost for him would be prohibitive.

        • JobaWockeeZ

Not exactly that much better than Molina.

        • J

okay so who do we give up for montero?

          • Yankee1010

Well, obviously I wouldn’t give up any studs, but I think they could be interested in the bunch of arms in the minors. Maybe mix in a Veras or a Ramirez in there.

Maybe a guy like Hacker, or maybe even a guy like Kontos could go.

Look, I know it’s not ideal, but something has to be learned from last year. Losing Posada and replacing him with Molina amounted to about a 5-7 win downgrade. They can do something about it or repeat history again.

            • Accent Shallow

If Montero was available for a Kontos/Hacker type package, he would have started this game for the Sox.

              • Yankee1010

I wasn’t saying those would be the only guys going to the Diamondbacks.

I understand it wouldn’t be for just one of those guys. It would be a bunch of guys from the arms they have in the minors, including the guys I listed and maybe others like Nova, Jackson, etc.

I’m not saying they would bite on it, but it’s not like Molina isn’t going to kill them at the plate. Being proactive is the better solution here.

            • V

And the Diamondbacks would hang up on you if you’re not willing to give anything of value.

    • V

Because everyone has awesome backup catchers who can hit .300????

      Check out the Sox. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/546236

      • Chris

I think you made a mistake with that link. That’s their better catcher… here’s the backup:

        http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/players/playerpage/8145

        • V

          IETC.

      • Yankee1010

I’m not looking for hitting .300. I’m asking for a guy who isn’t better off not bringing the bat to the plate.

I’m not asking for a backup like Posada earlier in his career (when he should have been a starter).

Molina is just ridiculously bad with the bat.

I don’t think it’s too much to ask to have a guy who has a career OBP better than .277 and a career SLG better than .339.

        • V

          He’s. A. Backup. Catcher.

Backup catchers are not great hitters. They are supposed to see 1 game, 2 games max, per week.

Good catchers are not clamoring to be the Yankees’ backup. They’d prefer to start.

Name names – who would you rather have over Molina, who is available, and willing to be a backup?

          • Yankee1010

They. Don’t. Have. To. Be. Awful. Hitters.

In the offseason, I would have rather had Zaun for one.

You say that good backup catchers don’t want to come to the Yankees to be a backup catcher, but they had a 38 year old starting catcher coming off of shoulder surgery – they had to think there was playing time available.

Standing pat will lead to the same kind of dropoff they got last year. It’s OK for them to try to upgrade.

Why didn’t Joe use Miranda there? Oh wait…

    • J

      where the hell is lanny

    • http://9thinning.blogspot.com VO

Yea, definately Miranda pinch hit for Molina and then no catcher, that would have been great.

      • MattG

Why do people keep saying no catcher? What about Cervelli?

        • http://9thinning.blogspot.com VO

Well if Miranda was called up instead of Cervelli there would be none.

          • MattG

I am too lazy to get the thread, but the consensus move at RAB was to demote Robertson or Veras and recall Miranda WITH Cervelli, for EXACTLY this situation.

Jeez, maybe you guys need to work on a content agreement with the front office instead of YES.

            • http://9thinning.blogspot.com VO

Well then thats a different story if were gonna go that route.

              • MattG

Yeah, one of Mike, Ben or Joe called it.

If the Yanks lose, will we have a post about it tomorrow?

    • V

      1) Even if Miranda were up, you need Molina in there with Posada out.

      2) He couldn’t hit for Pena, because then you have Berroa at 3B in a 4-3 game.

Veras can’t get Van Every out?

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

I wish Girardi didn’t mix in match here because the longer they take the more likely we see the tarp.

    • Evan

Well since there was an out recorded in the inning, we will at least get to hit. If they call the game before we hit, it’s not a called game it becomes “postponed” which might be a good thing.

      • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

Ooh, I did not know that.

  • Chris

It looked like Swisher may have crossed home before Molina was tagged… I’m surprised Girardi wasn’t out to at least argue it.

    • V

Batter has to reach first or run doesn’t count.

    • MattG

Brush up on your rules. All batters must reach the bases they are forced to.

    • Evan

Is that still considered a “force” or no?

      • TC

It’s always a force at first.

    • MattG

Absolutely not. But then again, it’s Veras.

    • Frank

That’s Girardi’s MO. We may as well accept it.

    • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

No, thats not overmanaging, its exactly why they have so many guys in the bullpen. And quite frankly, anyone paying attention to the Yankees right now is a lot more confident in Phil than Jose.

      • tampayankee

Absolutely! Over Managed and over analyzed “Clueless Joe” is the worst manager since Bob Lemon. There is no reason to have 8 relievers, when you need a bench, Shelley Duncan anyone?

Fangraphs showed our win probability to be over 50% when Melky hit that double. How the fuck do you not score with 2nd and 3rd and one out.

    • J

lol just as frustrated as you

we should trade for ellsbury so he can steal home

    • MattG

You bat Ramiro Pena and Jose Molina, that’s how. Fangraphs only considers other games that had the exact same score at the exact same point of the game. If it were a true simulation, well, it’s hard to do worse than Pena and Molina. That percentage would’ve been at the very bottom of the predictive model.

    • JobaWockeeZ

      Nothing new.

The reason NY doesn’t have a bat on the bench (Mirada would have been a nice PH earlier) is because Joey G will not let a reliever go more than 1 friggin inning. Coke was a starter most of last year. I think he could have made another inning and thus freed up a relief spot so they could have another bat on the bench

    • MattG

Amen. For every matchup you gain on defense, you lose one on offense. If Molina and Cervelli are going to be your catchers, you have to opt for the offensive matchup, and let your pitchers face the guys on the wrong side of the plate.

Hey so why can’t Phil Coke pitch more? In 6/13 outings, he’s pitched less than one inning and he’s pitched more than one only three times, never going a full two innings.

    • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

Scratch that: 7/13 appearances are less than one inning, incl. tonight.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Because he’s a lefty reliever. By law, they aren’t allowed to record more than three outs.

  • James

uhh… albaladejo… how are you still in the majors? i’d rather have humberto sanchez.

    • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

      Logic fail.

  • Brazilian Yankee

And now we get Edwar… why can’t Joe put Robertson or Melancon? Last year he trusted the new guys and they performed, maybe he should do the same this season.

  • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

I’ve said since the offseason. Robertson > Alby. I know it doesn’t matter but damn man. Melancon and David are up, get them innings.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Edwar? Girardi might as well have put a bow on it.

  • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

I’m confused. Why is everyone ripping on Albaldejo? Two runs scored, one who reached on an error and the other an intentional walk because of the guy who reached on an error. How is this not Ramiro Pena’s fault?

    • KW

because pitchers’ jobs are to get outs, even if the defense doesn’t help. they’re supposed to pick up the guys. this was not a good inning.

      • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

Um, he got a ground ball and a fly ball. Those plays would not have scored a run had the defense not let him down.

        • KW

That’s faulty logic. Sure, he wasn’t responsible for the runner reaching, but he didn’t allow the sox to strand him either. It’s akin to saying XYZ player gave up a flyball that in any other ballpark but fenway would have been an out, but turned into a HR. It’s still a HR any way you slice it, and this is 2 runs any way you slice it.

    • Frank

Because we’re all mad about losing to the Red Sox over… and over… and over so we hate whoever fucks up minus Jeter.

      I get it.

    • TC

Agreed. Alby managed to induced three outs, Pena just kicked one. The only hit he gave up was a soft liner on a tough pitch. I have no issues with how he pitched.

  • Frank

It’s nothing short of AMAZING to hear BBTN and John Kruk did and duck and try to STILL make the case of why Joba should be in the bullpen.

Kruk: If he can’t get past the 6th inning, I can’t understand how he is helping this team right now. It exposes the bullpen weakness and puts pressure on the other starters to go deep into games.

Are you FUCKING kidding me!!! Is that not why we signed Burnett and Sabathia. He’s a 5th starter!

I need to take a shit.

    • V

Wow. Kruk really is an idiot.

    • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

      on Kruk?

    • Yankee1010

There is nothing Joba could do, short of cure AIDS, that will make the B-Jobbers admit that they are wrong.

    • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

Did he not get the whole 12 strikeouts thing? I mean seriously. What more does Joba have to do?

      • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

Heh. I guess one inning in the 8th is more important than 5 innings at the start of the game. Kruk, just stop. Please.

        • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

It just sucks that no one on that damn network says “Hey, guys: you’re wrong! Here’s a bunch of empirical evidence to tell you why you’re wrong.”

          • V

And that’s why I haven’t watched ESPN so far this season.

          • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

So stubborn. Can’t admit he is wrong.

    • http://eemack.blogspot.com Jackson

I know, it’s like he simply can’t understand the idea of developing a starting pitcher. If they don’t come into the league pitching like Halladay they should be in the pen.

The guy is 23, give him a few years before you’re burying him Kruk.

    • James

one nut kruk and steve phillips… Kruk wasnt amazing, and phillips traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano… that’s ESPN for you…

      • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

        No, no he didn’t.

      • Frank

His argument was that he’s not economical. Forget that he’s 23. Forget that he’s the best 5th starter in baseball… or that he’s a 5th starter period.

No one talks about Max Scherzer. No one talks about Rick Porcello.

        • V

Porcello pitched 7 innings on 87 pitches today.

    • Steve H

I need to take a shit Kruk

      Fixed.

  • Sean A

    This sucks

  • James

Albaladejo only gets innings because he got out of jams earlier in the year, seems more like luck, not a great strikeout guy, which is somethign we needed now.

    • Accent Shallow

He’s got a power sinker. Think Good Wang. Not a bad pitcher to have in the pen.

      Still, he’s losing favor quickly.

      • James

Albaladejo has a power sinker… that hitters can hit.

  • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

    /puts on optimist hat

They can do three runs in two innings. Come on, Yanks!

    • V

Can and will are different words :-(

    • Andrew

Not with the bottom of our order…and no bench whatsoever.

    • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

      Rally caps baby!

    • Yankee1010

They will do it. No Papelboner either.

    • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

      Yes we can!

Oh come on people, smile and be happy. We’re due for a big inning. Maybe.

  • dkidd

    we can win this game

    grind it!

  • Ed

The pitching is one thing. It’s frustrating, annoying and I would like to think it will get better. What’s worse is the fact that three runs feels like 10 right now.

  • mtrico

    This team is ass.

  • Andrew

Well.. Okajima is still in there. Some of the worst stuff in baseball, for sure. Anything is possible with that scrub in.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

What the fuck is that on Manny Delcarmen’s face?

    • Accent Shallow

The Red Sox have far and away the highest TFHAR (Terrible facial hair about replacement) in the majors.

  • DreDog

How badly do we need Juan Cruz now?

  • NHYankee62

GIrardi’s looking alot like Torre here.

Trusting the guys he knows instead of the kids that just got called up.

The sad thing is that Veras, Ably, and Edwar don’t have much experience themselves. THey’ve all sucked this year. Even though Veras and Edwar got the outs, goign to them over Melocon and Roberston is fucking stupid!!!

Why even have RObertson and Meloncon on the team when you’re not going to use them??

    Un-fucking-believable!!!

Fire Joe Torre….. I mean Joe Girardi now!!!

    • James

i’m surprised girardi isnt pushing for scott proctor… now that him and torre have broken up, i thought girardi would be throwing pebbles at proctors bedroom window…

      • Yankee1010

Predictably, Proctor visited Andrews today. Can’t imagine why.

    • Accent Shallow

You have to trust your players a little. If Albaladejo keeps pitching like this, he’ll be the mop-up man, or in the minors.

  • V

    GODDAMNIT.

Cano is not looking like Cano anymore :-(

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

    Robbie’s gone ice cold.

  • Sean A

Bottom line when the starter is mowing em down leave him out there or at least wait til they stop striking out

  • David Coonce

No horse in this race – I am, sadly, a Padres fan. But I can’t stand the stuff I’m seeing – cheering when Bay got hit, the “Boston Sucks” chants when Beckett asked for the mound to be cleaned, etc.

I would say the same when/if these things happened in Boston.

But I think it’s important to retain some level of sportsmanship and, as Yankees fans, to remember that your team plays way more games against non-Boston teams than against the Red Sox.

All right, let the merciless flaming begin.

    • V

So… why are you here, again?

      • David Coonce

Because I’m a baseball fan, watching two of the very best teams ever assembled go at it. And I want to see really good games watched by really smart fans – I believe that the Yankees fans are some of the smartest, most astute fans in the game, with Red Sox fans not far behind.

And my favorite team sucks. I like watching good games and reading good, smart comments and hearing good, smart fans on TV. Is that okay?

        • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

I believe that the Yankees fans are some of the smartest, most astute fans in the game, with Red Sox fans not far behind.

Really? I’d say the average Yankees and Sox fan is pretty, well, how do I put this lightly, boneheaded.

    • KP

This is a place where Yankee fans can cheer with other Yankee fans. As mature as you think you are, grow up. People’s feelings get hurt.

    • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

Haaha. I’m just wondering why a Padres fan is here.

      • V

I’m just wondering why there’s a Padres fan.

    • Frank

Bay was hit between the numbers. He’s been launching the ball. That’s baseball.

And go on the road to every game the Yankees play and listen to how often a “Yankees suck” chant happens.

Otherwise go kick yourself in the face and trade us Peavy for nothing!

      • V

        I’ll give up Kennedy+Aceves+Duncan(both!)+Igawa!

        • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

Matsui for Adrian Gonzalez. Straight up.

    • James

Boston Does Suck, and Jason Gay i mean Bay is a fag, let’s see bay not get lucky.

      • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

Uncool, dude. Gay is not a synonym for “shitty.”

      • Accent Shallow

Come on. No need to stoop so low.

    • Accent Shallow

In a thread like this, people generally aren’t taking time to form a thought, they’re just reacting to the game. So the level of discourse is going to be significantly lower than other threads on the same site.

As for the fans in the stands, emotions are always going to run high against the Sox. That’s the way it is.

  • Frank

Losing this game will lead to a precipitious decline in my overall demeanor…..

  • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

Now he wants to bring M M in.

  • E-ROC

Mark Melancon coming into the game an inning late. That works.

    • Sean A

No way can he fail now though

  • http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00mwbIM15ofMv/340x.jpg Mike Pop

    Mets, lol.

  • Yankee1010

At least Melky continues to have good at-bats.

  • http://www.puristbleedspinstripes.com Aunt Becca-Optimist Prime

Ugh I wish there were words to describe how pissed off I am….

Just one fucking win against the Red Sox. I can’t standing reading facebook status updates that shove it in my face.

  • Sean A

Maybe Pimplebuns will blow up in the 9th

    • Yankee1010

Papelbon? I highly doubt they’re bringing him after throwing so many pitches yesterday.

  • Ed

That was a good inning. Almost got two guys on base that time. One good offensive inning in a game isn’t good enough when every starting pitcher has one bad inning per game. I’m going to bed, that way I can be disapointed now and in the morning.

  • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

Mark Melancon has a large nose.

  • Accent Shallow

Melancon is pitching for Albaladejo’s spot. Confirm/deny.

  • Drew

At least we have a shot next inning. Molina and Pena due up.
