Joba should have fist pumped for 5 minutes straight

  • Mike Pop

Taking the lead this inning. Gauranteed.

    • Mike Pop

      Twas a joke.

  • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

One more inning, Joba. One more.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Mo, shouldn’t we be more worried about whether the Yanks win/lose than losing ammo in some silly argument?

      • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

Huh? I wanted one more inning from him because it means one less inning from the bullpen.

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Oh . . . gotcha. Forget what I posted then.

  • V

1 more scoreless inning, and Joba as a quality start. Not GREAT, but most teams are absolutely thrilled if their 5th starter does that.

    • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

He is the 4th starter right now.

      • V

5th. Hughes = 6th. Wang will be back soon.

        • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

I’m not going to assume anything from Wang until I see it.

  • Matt-Pitt

Are we really that confused by this guy? Teix looked awful on that pitch.

    • Tank the Frank (formerly just “Frank”)

It’s got to be legit. This is the 2nd time he’s shut us down.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

He also shut down the Sox and Rangers on back to back starts April 19th and 24th. 13.2 innings, 4 runs (2 in each start.)

      • V

Only has 1 godawful outing. Several QS’s and a near one.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Counting today, his ER allowed per start:

    Are you kidding me? Seriously?

  • V

Wow, they’re going to make sure Uehara can pitch the 7th. Way to keep his pitch count down, guys! WAY TO GO!!!

  • http://forums.projectcovo.com/images/smilies/e6omir.gif OmgZombies

Uehara? 1 run? Really? I mean Really?

    • http://liberalmusings.wordpress.com Pablo Zevallos

His split-change is moving very well, and that’s what has had the Yanks in their current offensive state.

      • pc69

No the Yankees current offensive state is because they suck at hitting. There is NO way, this guy should be holding this team to 1 run.

If this was Boston, Toronto, Tampa, Angels, White Sox, Texas, they hit this guy. But the Yankees, whiff!

        • Mike Pop

          Read tommie’s comments above.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

If this was Boston, Toronto, Tampa, Angels, White Sox, Texas, they hit this guy. But the Yankees, whiff!

          April 19 Uehara v. Boston Red Sox – 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 runs
          April 24 Uehara v. Texas Rangers – 6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 K, 2 runs

  • Matt-Pitt

And now the heart of our order doesn’t even work counts… This team is painful.

  • Accent Shallow

    Argh.

  • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

That second strike to Matsui may have been the furthest a strike has been from the zone on Gameday this season.

    • V

      Yup.

  • V

    Uehara with a fist pump.

  • donttradecano

    Uehara fistpump! CRUCIFY HIM!

    • Mike Pop

This makes the Yankees come back.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Bush league fist pump by Uehara. I wonder what Huff has to say about that.

    • rally caps

today = baltimore orioles world series game 7

  • Matt-Pitt

That was one of the worse offensive innings I have seen this season. 3-4-5 up and we go down on 8 pitches while being down by 2 runs in the late innings. Just awful. I really hope our offense wakes up in the 7th, 8th and 9th… When they usually do.

  • JobaWockeeZ

And Uehara is only at 86 pitches.

  • http://liberalmusings.wordpress.com Pablo Zevallos

    Matsui has been cold. Arrrgghhh

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

No RAB mention in that yesnetwork.com commercial? Bush league.

    • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

They heard that you guys advocate the fist pump. it’s just not the Yankee way.

      • Tank the Frank (formerly just “Frank”)

        LOL

  • V
    • Accent Shallow

Wouldn’t be in favor of a strict platoon, since Matsui is the better hitter, but it will be nice to have the flexibility.

  • http://liberalmusings.wordpress.com Pablo Zevallos

Why does Jeter’s arm look especially weak this game?

  • http://forums.projectcovo.com/images/smilies/e6omir.gif OmgZombies

I would have slapped my mother if Jose Veras pitched the 6th.

  • donttradecano

So does Joba go the simulated first inning in the pen route?

    Batter 1: K
    Batter 2: Single
    Batter 3: Walk
    Batter 4: HR, with fistpump
    Batter 5: Groundout
    Batter 6: K

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

Maybe we should have ARod hit a huge homer against Joba during batting practice before the game starts. He bears down and pitches better after that first homer.

  • JackC

I may well be the only Yankee fan who thinks Joba had that fist pump coming. I find Papelbon’s similar antics insufferable and he’s usually winning when he does it. For Joba to do it in the 5th inning of a game in which he’s given up 4 runs, for instance, speaks to a real problem with the team’s attitude and approach, I think. Having said that, I will gladly be a hypocrite about this if it can help serve to wake this team up — but so far, it doesn’t look like it.

      • JackC

        Ah, Johnny

    • donttradecano

yea, lets take all the emotion out of the game.

    • A.D.

Yes he had it coming, no he shouldn’t stop doing it, if teams want to mock him by it they they can, he doesn’t give out as many HRs as he K’s guys.

If people mock him on it, it will likely help him focus for him to strike them out, and realistically the fist pump isn’t some signature move that Joba has as his thing, sure he does it, so do many pitchers when they get big outs, its an emotional reaction, and for whatever reason the media really has latched on to Joba’s

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Girardi has no problem with it. That’s good enough for me.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Meh, I think you and Huff take yourselves too seriously.

If Huff wants to fist pump back, that’s fine. If I’m Joba, that just tells me I can get under his skin. I brush him off the plate a few times from now on. Not to retaliate, but to get him off his game.

    • Tank the Frank (formerly just “Frank”)

      Very fair points.

But the Orioles have no business doing it. If the Red Sox want to mock Joba next time around, they have every right to do it.
But not the Orioles. Not Aubrey Huff.

  • cjc

OMG Michael Kay makes seals cry

  • Matt-Pitt

Come on offense. No more Uehara, we can score on this bullpen.

  • Dan2

I decided to keep track of all of Joba’s fastballs this game after watching the first two innings and noticing the difference between velocities. My first thought was that he may not be pushing himself enough in warmups, so he doesn’t have his best stuff in the 1st. I believe this even more now.

I got the velocities from MLB Gameday

    1st inning average fastball: 91.6 (15)
    2nd inning average fastball: 94.4 (8)
    3rd inning average fastball: 93.8 (12)
    4th inning average fastball: 93.8 (9)
    5th inning average fastball: 94.7 (12)
    6th inning average fastball: 93.9 (8)

    • donttradecano

So is he scared to go all out in the first? The whole thing seems odd to me.

      • A.D.

Don’t think its scared, vs not fully warmed up, or doesn’t have as much adrenaline pumping to be throwing harder.

    • Dan2

Out of the 64 fastballs, here is the breakdown:

      89: 1
      90: 4
      91: 5
      92: 7
      93: 14

LOL. I feel that way too. Every season I’m always like: they HAVE to be leading the league in solo HR, GIDP, not getting the runner in from 3rd, or one of the worst in the league with RISP.

It’s just because we watch them every day. Not that they haven’t been bad with RISP or don’t hit a lot of solo shots, but it’s definitely exaggerated.

The O’s bullpen has been good lately, its the starters who have been shit. He wasn’t going to push his luck.

So just like with us, if the move doesn’t work, the manager gets killed.

  • JackC

How many pitches did Joba throw? Has there been a constitutional amendment prohibiting Chamberlain from pitching into the 7th? I mean, we can debate the merits of whether or not he should, but I think it’s a little silly that we just assume (rightly, I think) that that option isn’t even on the table.

    • V

Uh… have you been watching the game?

You DO realize that he really wasn’t amazing today, right?

      104 pitches, 9 hits, 2 BBs.

      • JackC

Yeah, silly me. The bullpen’s been reliable, why would I worry?

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

          The bullpen’s reliability is moot.

Joba hasn’t been that sharp, and he’s thrown a lot of pitches already, and he’s struggled specifically against this heart of the order today.

For this inning, anybody in the bullpen (even this crappy one) is probably a better option than Joba.

          • JackC

Fair points, though I think the bullpen’s ERA might somewhat undermine that claim. I am happy to be wrong though, if they can get the next 6 outs.

But my larger point is that it’s disturbing to have a pitcher whom we never expect to grit it out, even on a day when he doesn’t look great, past the 6th inning.

    • Bob Stone

      Joba threw 104 – 64 for strikes

    Veras warming up…

  • rally caps

is today the day the yankee’s bullpen turns it around? or is today the day the yankee’s bullpen is the yankees bullpen?

Veras’ turn to blow the game. I think we would have run through everyone then. After that, we can mount our 20 game winning streak!

He needs to let Coke go another. Don’t trust this game in the hands of Veras, and asking Mo to get 6 outs is a little much.

    • Bob Stone

Definitely agree – Coke for 3 more outs

    • Mike Pop

not that i don’t trust Veras, but i would prefer Coke out there.

    • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

Coke is going to face the lefty Huff, and then he will probably go to the pen.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

This is where using Albie for two yesterday hurts. He’s definitely the most trustworthy middle reliever beyond Coke at this point.

      • Evan

I hope he takes it batter-batter with Coke. I see the only other arm coming out of the pen is Mo. I don’t trust anyone out there with men on base.

        That one’s the winner.

          Well, slight change – he’s 33% away – he’s 66% there.

          • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

Common misconception. If 2/3 of the bat is pink it means he is 2/3 in favor of breast cancer awareness or 1/3 not in favor. That 1/3 he’s not in favor of is the 33% he has solved.

      • Evan

There have been at least 3 of those at the stadium that played against us. The grounds crew has to soften the track out there because we have a lot of guys with warning track power (Tex, ZING!) and the ground rule doubles have been costing us.

Does it seem like Mo’s cutter has extra movement this year? Possibly due to lower velocity?

  • Alex

Earlier in the game (as soon as Huff hit the HR) Kabak said that Girardi should be fired for letting Joba start. Kabak mocks fans who jump to conclusions and make rash decisions, yet it seems that he did just that. Obviously the medical staff knows more than Kabak. Joba is clearly a better pitcher than Al Aceves, even with a nominal injury in his thumb. Good thing Girardi let Joba start as he fired 6 quality innings and kept the Yankees in the game. Girardi is a fine manager who is not responsible for the lack of success this year. I’m glad that the leash on Joba is becoming a bit looser.

  • UWS

Joba is wearing a sweater vest and glasses. Adorable!!!!
