Game 43: Starting a new streak

Heyman: Yanks can't add payroll (for now)
Game 43 Spillover Thread

Today’s game has the potential to be very, very painful. Let us count the many reasons why:

  1. Andy Pettitte does nothing but induce agita by allowing so many baserunners (1.45 WHIP). To his credit, he’s usually managed to eke his way out of most innings unscathed.
  2. JA Happ is a rookie southpaw the Yanks haven’t seen yet. ‘Nuff said.
  3. The game is on FOX, and by my count the Yanks are 0-500 when playing on that channel the last few years.
  4. The game is on FOX, therefore Joe Buck and Tim McCarver will have the call.
  5. The game is on FOX, therefore Joe Buck and Tim McCarver will spend roughly eight innings talking about teh bandbox!1!!
  6. The game is on FOX, therefore Ken Rosenthal will patrol the sidelines with his “they have to consider moving Joba to the pen at some point” propaganda.

Well, on the bright side, Will Carroll says that Joba’s knee is fine and it’s very likely he’ll make his next start. Here’s today’s the lineup:

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, DH
Cano, 2B
Melky, CF
Swisher, RF
Cervelli, C
Pena, 3B

And on the mound, Andy “imagine if they were still paying him $16M a year” Pettitte.

  • CP3

    Wow swish got dropped down

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

He’s been slumping. What’re you gonna do? Hopefully he starts to heat up.

      • Drew

Thank Mo that Cano is where he belongs.

        • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

If Swisher were still hitting well, I’d have no problem with Swish in front of Cano. Put as many high on base guys in front of him as possible.

      • CP3

My only question is why doesn’t Joe move down matsui?

  • UWS

    Re: #3

Seriously, WTF is up with that? I’m glad I’m not the only one who hates to see Yanks on FOX (the dynamic Buck/Timmy duo aside).

    • mustang

It’s better then ESPN, but not by much..

    • John

Just a random theory on #3: Maybe it’s because when the Yankees play their games on Fox it’s because Fox considers it to be the game or matchup of the week, so they play stronger opponents? Still wouldn’t account for all of it though…

  • John

Since when does A-jax bat lefty?

    http://tinyurl.com/oj7g4u

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      That’s Juan Miranda.

      • John

thought so but at Chad Jennings site it said that was A-jax

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Re: #4

Let’s all give thanks to Mo for the mute button.

    • Some call me…tim

      XM Sterling + Waldman>>>nothing

      GO CERVELLI!!!

  • Accent Shallow

    In re: #1.

I’ve maintained for years now that Andy will pitch a no-hitter at some point, solely because the improbable seems to constantly happen in baseball. He’s a good pitcher, but very hittable. And one day, all those balls in play will be right to a defender, and poof.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

On a positive note, the Yankees have a .917 OPS against lefties this year. Even the lefties are getting into it, with an .867 OPS v. LHP.

    • Accent Shallow

While the thought of an unknown lefty fills me with dread, I’m heartened by the addition of Tex, Swisher, good Robbie, and (seemingly) good Melky. That’s two right-handed bats, one guy who has a reverse platoon split, and one switch-hitter who hasn’t been helpless against LHP this year (.783 OPS)

  • jeff

jeremy bleich is something to watch

  • Drew

    “0-500″- I enjoyed that.
    SGNJ

  • Yankeegirl49

    Buck and Shmuck…ugh!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Do the Phillies really have the pieces to give up for Bedard? Something tells me they don’t.

  • Drew

When JoPo comes back I wouldn’t mind having him bat behind Cano. Cano needs some protection behind him.

    • V

I’m on the fence – I like Cano at #5 because his OBP is purely BA driven – he’s more likely to get a hit (and thus, drive in a run) than Posada.

However, Posada will have a higher OBP, and baserunners is better than not baserunners.

Not sure where Melky factors in if he keeps this up, but I won’t be a believer until I see it for a full season.

  • V

Oh, lookie, #5 has already started, and the game hasn’t even started yet!!!

    • Accent Shallow

I’ve been working the mute button, details?

  • pat

Hahah, kid’s hamming it up, good for him.

  • mustang

    ESPN or FOX ?

Just wondering which one everyone hate more?

or YES have to be fair.

    • Accent Shallow

Joe Buck manages to suck the joy out of everything, so it’s gotta be FOX.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      YES > ESPN > FOX

      • Greg G.

Yeah, I’d go along with that.

    • mustang

I HATE games on ESPN especially Sox/Yanks. That’s 3 to 4 hours of hearing how wonderful the Sox are and how bad the Yank are for mankind.

  • The Evil Empire

So the top 5 Hitters in the MLB:

    Manny Ramirez
    Albert Pujols
    Alex Rodriguez
    Lance Berkman
    Hanley Ramirez

…. Nick Markakis and some others are on deck.

Anyways I was having a debate with a friend, he says Joe Mauer and Justin Monroe are better HITTERS than Lance Berkman? Do you agree?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Mauer > Berkman > Morneau

    • Drew

      lol

    • Accent Shallow

Mauer is better than Berkman if you adjust for position, I’d imagine. Morneau doesn’t belong in the conversation.

  • Drew

Right down the middle. Lucky it was a single.

  • Accent Shallow

Guess the no-hitter isn’t happening today.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

      Or ever.

      • V

Yeah, he gives up WAY too much contact to pitch a no-hitter.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Hey, Derek Lowe and Kevin Millwood threw no-hitters.

          • Thomas

As did Bud Smith and Jose Jimenez.

    • Drew

In this stadium, their will never be a no hitter.
      /Espn/Fox/Bandbox’d

      • Drew

        Crap, there*

  • V

Mention #2 of homeruns in the ballpark.

‘Mention’ = talk about it for two minutes.

    • Spaceman.Spiff

      “Won’t be the last.”

  • Jake

Pitch limit at 80 for this guy!!

  • Accent Shallow

    Derek, what are you doing?

  • Drew

Nothing like back to back k’s all on fastballs.

  • EvoLuTioN

    SWING THE FUCKING BAT

  • mustang

    “High price yankees team”

You knew that was coming and about 20 more times

  • EvoLuTioN

see what swinging the bat does? quit taking these 90mph fastballs

  • V

Strike 3 for Jeter was farther outside than Ball 1.

    • V

Outside the strike zone, that is. It was in to Jeter.

    • Accent Shallow

I don’t even know what he was thinking on strike 2, though.

  • cjc

apparently Tex doesn’t understand what you are supposed to do against a rookie you haven’t seen before

  • Drew

    Sit fastball Al!

  • Spaceman.Spiff

We’re being very…patient, to put it nicely.

  • V

2nd strike to ARod was a meatball.

  • Drew

I can wait till Al can start running at 100%

    • Accent Shallow

I’m not entirely sure we’ll see that until 2010.

  • V

18 pitches for Happ. Can knock him out before the 5th at this pace.

    • V

      19, sorry.

  • Ivan

I can see Ryan Howard pulling a David Ortiz of 09, heck even worse.

    • Accent Shallow

Howard’s fall from grace might be sooner — I think he’ll always be a better hitter on contact than Ortiz, but he strikes out so much more.

      • Ivan

Ortiz is a betta OBP guy than Howard.

        • Accent Shallow

Career OBP: .377 for Howard, .384 for Ortiz.

          BB%: 13.5% for Howard, 13.4% for Ortiz.

Ortiz’s advantage over Howard is that he strikes out less, and thus puts the ball in play more. I can see Howard having a falling off without an injury like Ortiz, solely because he has such an issue making contact.

  • EvoLuTioN

this kid is throwing 90mph meatballs and we’re taking strikes when up in the count.

    lol

    • V

Well, they’re not quite ‘meatballs’. He’s got good movement and deception with the changeup.

How many teams were saying that about Mussina last year?

      • EvoLuTioN

you’re really comparing J.A. Happ to Mike Mussina?

        • V

          :headsmack:

          Purely on velocity, d00d.

  • CP3

only 55-60 pitches left for Happ

    • Accent Shallow

And the Phillies’ pen has an ERA north of 5.00. I like it.

  • Accent Shallow

Andy, this next pitch had better be a slider low and away.

  • Ivan

    Terrific Bullpen, Joe Buck. Really?

  • EvoLuTioN

here comes a Ken Rosenthal chat

  • V

Actually, heh, Happ and Pettitte essentially have the same velocity, though Pettitte has better breaking stuff.

  • Jake

    …..

  • EvoLuTioN

    ibanez homerun ugh

  • Joey

    Sonofa…

  • SouthernYankeeFan

    that was crushed.

  • Accent Shallow

So when does Ibanez realize that he’s not quite this good?

  • Ivan

What da fuck is Ibanez on?

    • CP3

      Bole?

  • E-ROC

That ball was up just a tad.

  • EvoLuTioN

THROW MEATBALLS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PLATE, COMPLAIN ABOUT BANDBOX

  • cjc

    what a joke

  • V

The homerun pitch was a godawful pitch, no matter how you slice it.

    • cjc

most of the HR pitches have been awful talk about bandbox all you want I think the pitching is a bigger factor

      • V

Exactly. that Ibanez HR goes out at PetCo.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Well yeah, because it’s only 396 to dead center in Petco. ;)

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

The Stadium threw it, not Pettitte.

  • cjc

hmm what happened to the strike zone

    • EvoLuTioN

      about to walk mayberry rofl

  • V

Hey, Pettitte. You’re not getting the outside call.

You know, the pitch you’ve thrown FOUR TIMES IN A ROW is NOT BEING CALLED FOR A STRIKE.

  • Joey

Well at least the umpire is consistently not calling the outside

    • V

      Gave him low, though.

      • Joey

He called it on Jetes, I can’t bash the ump as long as he’s being consistent

  • V

#3 ‘zomg bandbox’ comment from Buck.

  • EvoLuTioN

now we will go down 1-2-3 in under 10 pitches

  • SouthernYankeeFan

yeah he is not gonna give pettite that corner.

  • CP3

remember when we were talking about how many walks cano took to begin the season, I guess that was bull since he only has 10 walk in almost 2 months.

    • EvoLuTioN

why walk when you can get hits?

  • EvoLuTioN

no one complains about the doubles machine of fenway and the fact that dead center is 379′

  • V

    He’s a poor man’s Juan Pierre.

    • EvoLuTioN

      bahahahah werth

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Thanks, Jayson.

  • Jake

    catch fail.

  • Accent Shallow

Ibanez giveth, and Ibanez taketh away.

    • Accent Shallow

Wait, that was Werth. I lose.

    • Ivan

      It was Werth.

  • Joey

Werth doing his best Mets impression

  • cjc

    I’ll take it thank you

  • Ivan

That’s one of those hits that u give credit to the defense.

  • pat

OMG a double? Hometown scorers much?

  • Drew

Mccarver and Buck have no idea its the sun field.

  • Accent Shallow

You really need to play for one run when there’s an ace like Happ on the mound.

(Or was Melky trying to bunt for a hit?)

    • cjc

      bunting for a hit

  • cjc

    don’t love that

  • zs190

Bunting from the 6th hole when Swisher is strikeout prone? I don’t know about that.

    • zs190

Though I guess that worked out alright.

    • pat

      SUCK ON THAT

      • V

        Still doesn’t make it smart.

  • EvoLuTioN

its okay, werth will redeem himself by stealing home

  • Brazilian Yankee

Why bunt there? Why play for only one run in the 2nd inning?

    • EvoLuTioN

probably because its the bottom of the lineup lol

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Nice play by J-Roll to get Swish.

  • EvoLuTioN

    1-1

    nice job swisher

  • CP3

    good job swish

  • V

Melky… please don’t sacrifice again. Yeah, it worked, but :headsmack:

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

      2 outs for 1 run = inefficient.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    WTF Cervelli?

    • Accent Shallow

He’s conditioned to sacrifice when he’s at bat?

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Oh, look at that, a SS with range.

  • cjc

hey his pitch count is 80 lets give him free 1 pitch outs

    stupid really stupid

  • SouthernYankeeFan

well at least they tied it up

  • http://www.new.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?id=594331910&ref=name Jamal G.

You know what would be all sorts of awesome? If the next Yankee who bunts gets crabs.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Heh. I’d be fine w/Cash bunting, though. Dude’s an out as it is.

      • V

With a guy on base, sure, but with no one on, I’d rather he just leave the bat on his shoulder – that way we’re guaranteed at least 3 pitches out of him.

    • CP3

Crabs are parasites. Crabs are often referred to as public lice and are not to be confused with body lice. The scientific name for crabs is Pediculus pubis

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I’d ask why you know so much about crabs, but I’m afraid of the answer.

        • Joey

lol, I’m gonna be eating crab for dinner tonight. Think I may have lost my appetite

  • V

I don’t like attempts to bunt for hits on a guy with a tight pitch count. 1 pitch outs are not a good idea. Get him out of the game and expose their bullpen.

  • CP3

why is frankie bunting does he not trust his ability to hit a 89 mph fastball, even bunts aren’t going to raise Happ’s pitch count by much.

    • Spaceman.Spiff

He just wanted to flash his speed, lol. I don’t agree with it either.

  • Brazilian Yankee

Sure we scored…but a 7 pitch inning? Somebody should take a pitch every now and then.

  • Quikksand

    Game tied, go Yanks!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

What in the fuck does Cervelli’s wrist injury have to do with his being in the Majors now?

  • Accent Shallow

Maybe Pena can try and bunt himself on to lead off the third. Argh.

    • Thomas

And the answer is yes, he will try.

  • Brazilian Yankee

Is the strikezone tight today? According to gameday first 2 pitches to Utley were strikes but the ump called them balls.

    • V

It’s been solid (tight, but solid) for most of the game. Those two were closer than other balls, though.

    • Joey

There hasn’t been an outside, he has been calling them low though, not sure why those weren’t strikes

  • Drew

Comparing Cervelli and Coste makes about as much sense as comparing Pudge and Chad Moehler. They’re all catchers.

  • Accent Shallow

    Did he just show bunt?

    Dammit Ramiro, I was kidding!

  • Drew

OMG if I see another bunt attempt I’m gonna flip out man!!

  • Joey

Mark Sanchez is at the real NY baseball park!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Dirty Sanchez in the hizzie.

  • Don

Ive figured out a combination of listening to the game on XM (satellite delay) and matching it up with the game on slight delay using the dvr.

It took a lil time to figure out, but WELL WORTH IT!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Just when I thought you couldn’t get any dumber, you go and do something like this … AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURELF!!!

That is freaking genius. Seriously. Well done.

  • Accent Shallow

    You’re killing me, DJ.

  • Drew

    Should’ve bunted

  • Accent Shallow

With a pitch count of 80, they really should force Manuel to take him out sometime in the fifth. Of course, at this rate, he may finish the seventh.

  • southernyankeefan

those were some fugly at bats

  • Drew

Nady JoPo and Molina may be in some EST games this week. Music to my ears.

    • Accent Shallow

Gorgeous. This lineup will be truly terrifying with the addition of Posada. Having Nady will be nice as well.

  • Accent Shallow

Love Swisher’s reaction to seeing that up close, lol.

    • Thomas

If that wasn’t at the stadium, it probably wouldn’t have made it past second base.

    • Accent Shallow

      So did I.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Oh, Mark, let me count the ways I love thee.

  • V

    Wow, that defense is awesome.

  • Ivan

With A-Rod runnig like he’s Posada, that’s an automatic DP.

    • Accent Shallow

I wonder when A-Rod will be able to run at 100%. I’m terrified that it won’t be until he has that second hip procedure in the offseason.

  • Accent Shallow

44 pitches through 4 innings. I am going to pull my hair out.

    • zs190

This always happens when we play against junk-throwing starters that we haven’t seen before, so frustrating.

      • V

        :headsmack:

Every pitcher the Yankees face is a ‘junkballer’?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

No, just every pitcher people haven’t heard of before.

          • V

            Aha.

      • Spaceman.Spiff

He’s not even throwing too much junk though.

  • John

    Tex better win GG

  • Drew

11 pitches per inning for happ. Great…

  • CP3

the yankees have gone from taking every pitch this kid threw to swing on the first. How many pitch did Happ throw that inning?

  • Brazilian Yankee

Words can’t describe how frustrating that A-Rod AB was. From a near 2-run HR to an easy DP…some tough luck so far.

  • V

Yes, Buck, we are getting fucking frustrated at you fucking morons repeating the same fucking shit over and over and over you FUCKING PRICK.

    Sorry.

  • V

Andy, Andy, Andy… that at bat was horrible.

  • Accent Shallow

Andy, Feliz has a career .294 OBP. You can’t walk him twice, he’s a free out!

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Is there anyone more self-loving than Joe Buck?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

“Is there anything you want to ask me Joe?”

What the hell kinda question was that?

  • yankeefan91 Arod fan

    dammittttttttttttt

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Congrats Mayberry.

  • EvoLuTioN

    pathetic meatball once again

  • BigBlueAL

The Phillies have come into NY and so far completely bitch-slapped the Yankees around.

  • southernyankeefan

    WTF thaat sucks.

  • V

Andy’s done. I’m sorry. I don’t know if I can put up with a year of this.

Single, walk a guy with a career OBP below .300 on 4 pitches, meatball for a homerun.

    • Accent Shallow

As was noted above, he’s a frustrating pitcher to watch, but I have no reason to believe that he won’t get his shit together.

      • V

        Except his age.

  • Ivan

No joke, I had a feeling he was gonna hit a homer.

  • Drew

Oh Andy, remember when you wanted 15 mil plus? You’re getting out pitched by Happ.

  • EvoLuTioN

now we’ll wait until no body is on base so we can hit some solo shots just to make it look like we tried

  • EvoLuTioN

why does fox keep focusing in on that black guy on the phone?

    • Thomas

      That is John Mayberry Sr.

    • Drew

      Mayberry Sr.

    • BigBlueAL

Mayberry’s dad, former MLB player too.

    • V

      Uh….

The kid who hit the HR? That’s his father. A former baseball player. Two time All Star – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mayberry

    • yankeefan91 Arod fan

That guy is the father of mayberry.

      • EvoLuTioN

lol, he sure didn’t seem to interested.

LOL HE ISN’T, idiots @ fox

  • Brazilian Yankee

If we were losing to Cole Hamels and Chase Utley, it would make more sense, but its fucking J.A. Happ and John Mayberry. Terrible game.

    • V

Oh, we’re only allowed to lose to aces and All Stars.

I guess we’ll win 90% of the rest of our games, eh?

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Pena throws hard.

  • Drew

At least Veras is fresh in the pen.

  • cjc

its getting to a point where now I expect everything to go out honestly its taking enjoyment out of baseball

    • V

Tell the pitchers to stop throwing meatballs.

Bad pitching leads to homeruns more than a ballpark does.

    • Drew

There’s some softball over on ESPN, go enjoy that.

      • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

I had my first game of the year last night. Why ESPN wasn’t there is beyond me.

  • V

Even his outs take 5+ pitches.

  • Nick L

i hate these guys calling the game.

  • Joey

Was he throwing the ice cream sandwiches at people or to people? I can’t believe I’m asking that question

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

I think it was to people.

      • Joey

lol thank you for answering my idiotic, non relevant question

    • Drew

If I can ever afford those seats, I’m bringin a hot dog shooter Philly Phanatic style.

      • Joey

Free buffet food for anyone that can get close enough to me!

  • Ivan

This game is far from over. Phillies have no pitching and the Yanks can certainly come back.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Their relievers are pretty good, though. 3.81 ERA, 7.3 K/9.

    • Drew

Unfortunately their pen has been pretty solid with the exception of a few.

  • V

MELKY STOP SHOWING BUNT YOU IDIOT>

    • V

At least, according to some Jays blog, lol.

  • BigBlueAL

I thought the Phillies had bad pitching.

    • Accent Shallow

Werth, maybe you’d get calls like that if you didn’t insist on having hilarious facial hair.

  • southernyankeefan

if the bats don’t wake up soon the new streak will be a new losing streak.

  • Ivan

U can’t make that up. U gave this dude free air time.

    5 innings, 1 run by J.A. Happ.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

You think Bank of America could’ve gone to, you know, the real stadiums, for that stupid like/love ad.

And I don’t see how dancing proves you love your team.

  • Drew

Okay, Andy try to get through this inning, mmkayy?

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    UZR adjusts for shifts, correct?

  • Drew

Maybe Happ is starting to get tired?….

I really enjoy the once-a-year HR where Jeter really pulls the ball. Last year was Scott Feldman in Tejas.
