No. There’s a segment of the Yankee fan base (led as usual by Mike Francesa) that is convinced that Hughes is nothing more than trade bait. And that not trading him for Santana was the biggest mistake Cashman has ever made.

Signing AJ was worth an immediate extra 2-3 wins a year since we never have to face him.
Even if this is serious, the Rangers are in love with Andrus and I’m not sure if they’d do that deal. Although apparently Hughes is untouchable in Arlington.

Definitely a walk because that’s the pitcher’s fault. A hitter could hit a good 0-2 pitch and there’s nothing you can do about it.

So far, this game has been extremely enjoyable. Unless you’re Robinson Cano, who has two solidly hit outs.

I’d give Tex the edge over Pena. A-Rod v. Longoria is tougher, since Longoria is the better defender and while A-Rod has the better track record as a hitter, he’s also coming off major surgery and Longoria has plenty of time to mature.

It’s the cutter. The lack of a changeup sure is hurting him, huh?
He’s already shown (see: start @Detroit) that he can pitch well without a changeup. However, I think in the long run that the addition of one would allow him to be far more effective. Maybe he’s not comfortable with it at the moment, maybe he never will be. Who knows.
I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that he’s working on it if the Yankees do send him back to Scranton, or that he’s working on it in ST 2010. While he certainly doesn’t need it this game, he’s not yet a finished product, and the addition of even an average change would be pretty devastating.
Phil’s been through a lot in his young career. All the attention early on as the future of the franchise then Joba comes up from out of nowhere and moves ahead of him, being called up, almost no hitter, injury, trade rumors, sent down, called up, pen rumors. Hope it’s shaping him to be a hell of a pitcher.
I hope Hughes goes all the way wit this one.

Where does the YES gun have Hughes’ velocity? I am watching FSN Southwest and they have him averaging 92 MPH.

he has topped at 93-94 a few times on the 4 seamer. around 87 on the cutter.
He’s averaging 91, maxing at 93 per pitch f/x. I’m not sure what the obsession with velocity is though. It’s more about how he’s throwing to spots and what results he’s getting. He looks good, and his curve is flat-out nasty today. That’s what counts.
He’s gotten, by my count, a zillion swinging strikes today. That’s more important than velocity. (Unless he were averaging 85 on the fastball. Then we have a problem)
What counts is that you get along great with your significant other, but that doesn’t mean you would mind if she could be a Victoria Secret Angel.

Typical of Phil Hughes. Team spots him 10 runs and he STILL pitches into trouble. And then, to make matters worse, he has the audacity to get out of it! Kid’s a bust. Seriously, how is he giving up hits at this stage in his career? He’s almost 23 and he already has more than 25 starts under his belt. When’s he going to start pitching well? Should have traded him when he was still a prospect.
Today’s performance confirms what we already know: TINSTAAPP.

hughes era without the one awful outing is actually under 3. 2.89 to be precise in the other 5 starts.
Certainly is an interesting way to use the guy who was gaining some trust from Girardi.

It’s tough to stay as healthy as they did last year 2 years in a row.
Reid Brignac and Ben Zobrist aren’t exactly chopped liver as Iawamura’s replacement.
Zobrist is a good player, but I guess that will weaken their OF if he moves to 2B. Its tough to lose a player like Iwamura and not have it affect you, especially after losing Kazmir a few days ago.
