Game 46 Spillover Thread (and Melky update)

By Benjamin Kabak

The Yanks are letting Millwood off the hook. They are 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position. A win moves them into a first-place tie. Let’s score some runs.

Update 11:50 p.m.: The Yankees have announced that Melky Cabrera is day-to-day with a strained right shoulder. X-Rays on the center fielder’s non-throwing arm were negative. Melky left the game after one batter when he went hard into the wall in his attempt at catching an Ian Kinsler triple. He will get an MRI on Wednesday.

Update 12:15 p.m.: So apparently, Melky didn’t get an X-Ray. He got a fluroscopy, and it came back negative. The fluroscopy images joints and moving parts. He’ll get an MRI on Wednesday.

Can someone fill me in on what happened to Melky?

Non-alarmist version please? These latenight games really bring out the kooks.

handtius says:

ran into the wall. right shoulder strain

Tom Zig says:

Really 0-5 already?

BigBlueAL says:

I believe they have left 5 runners on base thru 3 innings so far.

Accent Shallow says:

Throw strikes, Joba!

*bashes head against wall*

Tom Zig says:

Only down by 2, we can do this

dkidd says:

david stern has ordered the refs to get the cavs into the finals

pc69 says:

That theory is floating around Orlando.

V says:

I don’t know which is worse, the ridiculous foul calls, or every team’s fans bitching that the other team has the refs in their pockets.

pc69 says:

I am going with the ridiculous calls. They are really bad this year.

Tom Zig says:

And the guest referee of the night is…

Tim Donaghy

pc69 says:

No fear, Yanks will win this 7-5. Joba will give up 2 more and the bullpen will give up one.

handtius says:

Game day can’t be right can it? Joba 4-seamer at 87mph?

Accent Shallow says:

A 7 pitch K isn’t ideal, but outs are outs.

It’s nice watching Josh Hamilton and not having to hear about how he regrets all his tattoos.

dkidd says:

i like when joba works fast

pat says:

that 2-1 pitch was not a slider

Tom Zig says:

A little slow to the plate there Joba

V says:

Ugh – that previous AB had four pitches in the zone according to cbs.sportsline

Strikes Joba, strikes.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

come on joba double play right here.

kunaldo says:

damn it joba!!! now we’re going to have to see wang today(that’s what she said)

good dp though

Drew says:

Thank you baby jesus

Thank you so much, Marlon.

V says:

Looks like Wang will get some work tonight.

Chip says:

handtius says:

Joba walked those 2 on purpose to add drama to the game, then routinely got a dp.

J says:

ron jeremy coaches the magic?!

brad says:

88 mph fastball??? wtf joba

Chip says:

Are they already starting to warm Wang? (yeah I know, that’s what she said)

Accent Shallow says:

I support dick jokes, but not unfunny dick jokes. Do better next time, plz.

Chip says:

I wrote it and then realized somebody was going to do it to me so I figured I’d do it to myself first

(wait for it….)

Accent Shallow says:

70 pitches through 3? I guess that’s what I get for mocking Price’s 3.1 IP, 100 pitch outing.

He could still go 5, maybe 6 with a lot of luck.

V says:

I hate how basketball games end in ridiculous foul-fests.

V says:

Magic win 116-114. Lebron misses from near-half-court at the end.

dkidd says:

david stern is sitting in the dark somewhere listening to spooky classical music and weeping

Tom Zig says:

Come on Swish. Now would be a good time to break the slump

A HR here sure would be nice.

Drew says:

dkidd says:

dear yankees,

please score some runs

thank you

Young is at -29.5 UZR/150 right now. Ouch.

Chip says:

You know, I wouldn’t be against scoring a run or three here. I mean, just hit it out of the park and you don’t have to hit with RISP

al says:

im watching this game with fucking chinese play by play.. its better than joe morgan..

Drew says:

haha this made me laugh

al says:

its kinda better i really dont care about how joba should be in the pen.. and the comercials are funny..

The best commentary is the commentary on “Ninja Warrior.”

pat says:

Kenny Blankenship is mad funny.

I prefer “Ninja Warrior” to “MXC” since it uses the real announcers. Those dudes announce like they’re narrating an epic novel.

pat says:

Ahh shit you’re right, I was thinking MXC, that Captain Tenille is a hoot for mxc as well.

Chinese torture is better than Joe Morgan.

Jack says:

Chinese torture is Joe Morgan.

Any word on Cabrera yet?

pc69 says:

Joba at 70 pitches. One more inning left.

Cervelli goes yard!

pc69 says:

maybe not.

72 pitches, 39 strikes. Not good.

V says:

Millwood’s pitching Cervelli away.

handtius says:

I’m ready for some Cervelli magic.

Chip says:

I’d settle for a single

handtius says:

a single is magic…so is a walk.

handtius says:

anything but that.

A walk would be nice here.

Some call me...Nick says:

Just lean into it…

V says:

Right shoulder sprain, X-rays negative. Shew.

pc69 says:

Is that official or Yankees speak?

Drew says:

Yayyyyyy The Melkman is okay!

Tom Zig says:

hooray x-rays negative on melky

X-rays negative on Melky. Awesome.

X-rays negative for the Melk man.

Chip says:

Think about how you felt typing that and consider how ridiculous that would have seemed 3 months ago

V says:

You have to send the runners here. You have to.

Drew says:

Ugh.. I thought so.

V says:

EVERY FUCKING TIME, JOE!!!!!

I swear to Mo. Men on 1st and 2nd, 0 or 1 outs, full count, SEND THE FUCKING RUNNERS FOR THE LOVE OF MO!!!

Sunday with Teixeira up, now with Cervelli up. It’s not fucking rocket science.

Accent Shallow says:

Two wildly different situations. In the Phillies game, it’s justifiable, I think.

This game? With Hideki Matsui as the lead runner?

handtius says:

what would you say if it was a strike’em out throw em out dp?

V says:

Pitcher that’s not a high-K guy vs. a batter who isn’t striking out at an insane pace, I take the risk.

Odds of a ground ball > odds of a strikeout.

Accent Shallow says:

But the lead runner is Hideki Matsui, not someone with functioning legs.

V says:

And?

More reason to get him going on the pitch, no?

The idea is to beat out a double play, not to get a double steal.

Chip says:

You’re going to risk the strike out, throw out double play on a guy like Cervelli who is a third string catcher? I can understand being upset with Tex up (although Tex is a flyball pitcher and you had A-Rod coming up next)

V says:

Odds of a ground out > Odds of a strikeout.

Ground ball = automatic double play.

V says:

And Millwood doesn’t get a lot of swinging strikes – they’re usually looking.

LiveFromNewYork says:

But sprains can suck.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Motherfucker. Why can’t we score off this guy?

Tom Zig says:

Anti hitting w/ RISP law has been put back into effect.

Accent Shallow says:

Manimal says:

FUCK!

Not ideal there.

I have a feeling Joba might be a tough-luck loser in this game.

handtius says:

tough luck? 3 inning 70 pitches…I hope…hope he makes it to the 6th, then I’ll call him the tough luck loser.

Quick, get rid of Molina.

Drew says:

I wish Eiland would sit down. He’s makin me nervous.

This sucks! I can’t believe we’re going to be swept by the Rangers!

:(

Wow Davis SMOOOOOKED that.

V says:

‘Chris Davis is all kinds of suck’.

Thanks whoever said that earlier.

Joba is all kind of suck.

Accent Shallow says:

Yeah yeah, he’s got scary power, but he can barely put the bat on the ball.

handtius says:

Davis with a nice 5-iron drive onto the green.

He’ll whiff three times on the putts, though.

Drew says:

Why am I so friggin tired of K’s?

Drew says:

handtius says:

because they’re taking 7-10 pitches. 3,4 pitch strike outs will make you happy.

Arsenio Hall has a TV show again?

It’s a recession, the networks have to cut back on talent.

Let’s be honest, aside from the Yankees, My9 has no talent.

AMS223 says:

looks like melky may have to get some tender care to deal with this very much like this:

http://www.nysportspace.com/pr.....f-cano-amp

donttradecano says:

Why isnt Singleton doing all the talking, Leiter is god awful.

V says:

Uh…

That’s Flaherty, not Leiter.

donttradecano says:

my mistake, you know what i meant. And it still doesnt change the fact that hes god awful.

V says:

Yes, yes he is. I don’t mind Leiter.

handtius says:

that’s Flaherty .

Chip says:

Question, is MLB gameday using an official gun? By that I mean can we trust the numbers we’re seeing there?

Gameday’s reading is based on the high-speed cameras.

Chip says:

So I’ll take that as a yes

It’s MLBAM’s gun, it’s as official as it gets.

al says:

i think we might see some wang tonight….

Accent Shallow says:

pc69 says:

The Yankees have been going to well to lose. Wang comes in and the Yankees come back and win. Wang gets his first win of the year and a pie in the face.

al says:

wangs head covered in cream!!!!!

V says:

Too much, man. Too much.

pc69 says:

That is funny. didn’t think about that when I wrote it.

Drew says:

Well, considering how off he’s been, I’d say so far so good.

According to @Bryanhoch, Melky to have MRI tomorrow.

According to @breakingnews, North Korea has abandoned Korean War armistice.

Accent Shallow says:

Looks like South Korea will no longer have Seoul.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

come on yankees lets tack on sum runs.

Tom Zig says:

Man this would be such an awesome game to win. Boston, Tampa, and Toronto all lost.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

goneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Accent Shallow says:

There you go Tex.

Mark Teixeira does not like losing.

Tom Zig says:

There we go. Tex puts us on the board

B.George says:

Has nobody noticed Joba rubbing his hand on his right pant leg with a brownish substance on his pants?

Drew says:

He shit his pants bro. No need to rub it in.

Upper deeeeeeeeeeeeeeck, bitches.

Greg G. says:

Well, there’s one.

Drew says:

He’s on the mark! Mark Teixeira with a Teix message to right!

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Nice little infield hit for arod.

donttradecano says:

Millwood gave Teixiera a little stare.

Chip says:

Looks like some momentum is starting….

Chip says:

Greg G. says:

C’mon Cano…

Greg G. says:
Drew says:

Ah my bad. Guess u said that b4 the liner.

Drew says:

Lol what u want him to do man.

V says:

Cano is getting no luck tonight.

Gah, two at ‘em balls for Robbie.

Accent Shallow says:

Not Robbie’s night, apparently.

handtius says:

Cano has no luck today…he’s hitting rockets.

pat says:

Bah, Robbie’s BABIP is dropping today.

Chip says:

Why not put Wang in here?

pat says:

sounds like my weekends

Tom Zig says:

al says:

because your a dude..

Drew says:

5 Ks: good
6,000 pitches: bad

V says:

Uh, wouldn’t this be a perfect chance to get Wang some work?

handtius says:

no, they’ll only use him in extra inning affairs.

BklynJT says:

no, they still think they can win the game

Tom Zig says:

Giambi would get a planter’s wart/bone spurs from that play

Accent Shallow says:

Is it really necessary to pull Joba?

Eh, I guess he doesn’t have it, and there was the rain delay . . . still, very disappointing, especially after Hughes’ start.

More innings for him later in the season. We’ll take the good with the bad.

Chip says:

You almost have to think that Wang will come in next inning. I mean if you don’t trust him to come in and hold them for a bit when you’re down 2 runs, when are you supposed to let him come in?

pat says:

I frickin love watchin the gangster pitch. He throws strikes and makes people hit his stuff on his terms.

Drew says:

Alf says fuck your garbage homer

V says:

Wow. That was a sick AB.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Nice inning for Ace.

handtius says:

10 pitches….go talk to joba now.

So I am confused:

1. Joba was at 84 pitches. He could have kept going. Between Hughes’ not getting the chance to finish the game last night and Joba’s removal today, I think Girardi babies the pitchers too much.

2. Aceves over Wang? From a “win the game” standpoint, it makes sense, but if the Yanks aren’t going to get Wang innings, I will maintain that they utterly jumped the gun in activating him. That was a terrible roster move.

Andrew says:

If you play baseball, you know that 84 pitches in 4 innings is = to about 110 pitches in 6 innings.

Drew says:

And if you know Joba. He’s a major league pitcher who can throw 100 pitches in 5 innings.

pat says:

If you play baseball,

that was a shot at kabak

And if you play baseball and know counting, you know that 84 pitches in 4 innings is = to about 100 pitches in 5. What’s wrong with 5 innings? You don’t just go from 4 IP to 6 IP

Actually, my bad. You meant to type 5 and typed 6. 84 pitches in 4 innings is 110 in 5, but Joba had just thrown a 12 pitch 4th. Why not let him finish with back-to-back good innings? He could have been around 100 by the end of 5.

Andrew says:

It’s a lot of work in a short period of time, that was the point. He labored through EVERY inning. Plus, he was largely ineffective, so it could be as simple as Joe not wanting to watch Joba dig us an even deeper hole.

Seriously, you can’t have a gripe with Joe taking out Joba there. You just can’t.

Instead, you should focus on Cervelli not bunting with first and second and 1 out in the Top of the 4th, with Jeter on deck.

Carry on, though…

Chip says:

I agree. They’re wasting a bullpen spot so they can have him throw bullpens and maybe put him in a blowout. This was the most ideal situation you could ask for to put him in and see what he’s got. Couldn’t they have waited four days to see how Joba was feeling or just saved Aceves (which they did) and let him spot-start?

handtius says:

Agreed. That move really infuriates me.

Man I am as puzzled as you are. Joba was putting people on but still get his K’s and outs. No reason for him not to get another innings at least. I’m beyond sick of all this babying.

Ivan says:

I still think he has that Josh Johnson accident in the back of his head.

BigBlueAL says:

Im sure Girardi is still a bit sensitive over his handling of the Marlins starters in 2006. Totally agree with you on the Wang part, but then again the entire roster construction this season has been pretty awful.

Accent Shallow says:

Always refreshing to see Aceves relieve whoever the inefficient starter du jour is.

Still afraid he’s the Mexican Darrell Rasner, though.

Andrew says:

His stuff is a lot better than Rasner’s…. not even close, really.

In my post-Mo fantasy world, Aceves and Coke are Gossage-like relievers.

dre says:

why taket Joba out? he could have given us another inning..instead Girardi goes and wastes our best bullpen arm an inninng earlier than needed.

BklynJT says:

Seemed to me that Joba was walking a tight rope. We bitch when managers leave pitchers in too long, and also bitch when they take them out early. This is especially a no win situation for Girardi since we would never know if Joba would have shut out the rangers in the bottom 5th. Girardi is much more in the know than us fans watching on tv, so I’m willing to accept the move

handtius says:

from Pete Ab:

“…Gene Monahan sent word via Jason Zillo that Meky didn’t have an X-ray. He had something called a fluoro. That showed nothing. He’ll get an MRI tomorrow.”

dre says:

i don’t want Wang anywhere near a close game, until he proves he can pitch.

Chip says:

How is he supposed to prove this? For one, pitching in a blowout isn’t quite the same as pitching in a close game. It’s not like the Yankees can intentionally get themselves in a situation where they can put him in. Today seemed like a great place though

dre says:

then he shouldn’t be up here, we can’t afford to give away games to help him “rehab” its not like he was a little bad..he was utterly useless..

Drew says:

Uh, guys, before you freak out about Aceves over Wang, check out the weather forecast.

Link please?

I’m beginning to think we are putting too much faith into a forecast. You make the moves to win the game. That’s a better reason for going with Aceves over Wang than the weather.

Chip says:

Good point, that absolutely has to be the reason

pc69 says:

hanging curve ball = matsui’s only hope.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

3 steals for Gardner.

Drew says:

handtius says:

Is it just me or does Gritty McGrittlez only hit when he fills in for someone taken out because of injury?

BklynJT says:

Jeter’s owe Cervelli a date with Minka Kelly for that one.

Guys, Hideki is so done. What a waste.

pat says:

WAIT A MINUTE I THOUGHT MATSUI WAS TOAST!?!?!?!?!

handtius says:

He is…French toast with whipped cream.

Phew, Matsui just made it to second on that one.

Accent Shallow says:

Hey, Matsui!

Here’s hoping this is the start of something.

Tom Zig says:

Matsui makes funny faces

Drew says:

Just missed a godzilla slam!! He’s alive!! Prolonged his career today! He’s not done!!11!1!

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

niceeeee hit matsui.

al says:

enough ANALizing.. we will win..

A HR would be nice here.

Chip says:

Well now a groundout, flyout score him. I’d feel a lot more comfortable not having to put Cervelli in that spot though, maybe Swish will just knock one out

Chip says:

That wasn’t exactly what I had in mind

Drew says:

Fuck… C’mon swisher! WTF!

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

dammit swisher u couldn even move him to third.

Ivan says:

BklynJT says:

That backdoor fastball onto the inside corner of a lefty is a great pitch.

V says:

+100

Mussina perfected it last season. Too bad he didn’t keep pitching, though I see why he decided to hang it up.

Ponson has tried to do it, but he always misses in.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

tied gameeeeeee yessssssssss.

BigBlueAL says:

Swisher needs to bat lower than 8th. Maybe like 10th.

pat says:

Drew says:

what the fuck kind of throw was that! ahaha

Chip says:

Well, maybe Captain Clutch can save us here

Chip says:

And just like that Cervelli makes me eat it

Accent Shallow says:

Byrd sure has a cannon if Matsui can score from second with less than two outs. . .

handtius says:

little baby catcher does it all himself.

Tom Zig says:

Wow matsui going from 2nd to home on a hump backer. Shocked

I love it.

Don Cervelli putting a hit out on that ball.

Tom Zig says:

Rebecca is jumping for joy somewhere

Charlie says:

I’m not sure there wasn’t something wrong with Joba. If you look on gameday his velocity was definitely down, sometimes as low as 87 on his 4 seamer..

V says:

He was also pitching on essentially 9 days rest.

Charlie says:

johnny damon is simply a god. As much as i love him, i still wouldn’t resign him after this season tho.

Charlie says:

not supposed to be a reply*

handtius says:

Accent Shallow says:

Wooo, Cervelli. Love the takeout slide.

pat says:

CERVELLI PLAYS TO WIN GAMES AND KICK ASS

handtius says:

Cervelli is the Chuck Norris of Baseball.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

nice hard slide.

Chip says:

Joba has to be hugging every one of these guys as they come across the plate. An offensive explosion will make a lot of people forget how bad he was today

Drew says:

He wasn’t even horrible. Yeah 3 runs in four isn’t good, but he easily could have gone 5.

Chip says:

I agree that he could have gone five but that wasn’t the real Joba out there and it was pretty obvious to everybody. The MSM would have had a field day had he not squeaked through those innings.

In the end, this was probably good for him. He has to learn to survive when he doesn’t have good stuff as it happens at some point to every pitcher

pat says:

Drew says:

JD ftw! Jetes on the move?

Charlie says:

Frankie pickin swish up for his suckiness

Chip says:

Jeter is probably going here

Tom Zig says:

Can we set a franchise stolen base record tonight?

BigBlueAL says:

Not a good game for Saltemachia’s CS%.

BigBlueAL says:

I realize I just totally butchered his name.

It’s spelled just like it sounds: Salt-a-la-mac-chi-a.

pat says:

It tastes just like it smells…..DELICIOUS

Chip says:

Who had Jeter going for a 20-20 season this year?

handtius says:

Damn it Jeter…you should be on third so you could steel home.

MattG says:

Why can’t he steal home from second base?

handtius says:

Well, Millwood is so slow to hime, he might be able to.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

johhny dont hurt the guy i remember a coach in the minor died that way :(

Drew says:

Nolan Ryan is rolling over in his suite.

Anthony says:

You know Tex, another home run right here would be pretty, pretty sweet..

Tom Zig says:

Wow quick hook Ron Washington

Chip says:

What could he possibly have been arguing? The ball four to Damon was way off the plate. I could see if he was arguing the first two though

Tom Zig says:

didn’t mean he got kicked out.

Accent Shallow says:

Are they pulling Millwood for Jason Jennings? Oh please oh please oh please

Brooklyn Ed says:

MattG says:

well, it is the sixth inning, so that equals the 12th man on the staff, right? Score being tied is irrelevant.

Chip says:

How crazy is it that this guy was so sought-after just a few years ago? I can’t remember, what did Houston give up to trade for him?

V says:

“HOUSTON — The Astros are getting Jason Jennings instead of Jon Garland to replace Andy Pettitte in their starting rotation.

What’s The Deal?

Astros get:
Jason Jennings, RHP — Was 9-13 with a 3.78 ERA in 2006. He’s the Rockies’ career leader in victories (58) and shutouts (three).
Miguel Asencio, RHP — Was 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA in three games with the Rockies in ‘06.
Rockies get:
Willy Taveras, CF — Career .284 hitter with 68 stolen bases in 88 attempts. Had 30-game hitting streak in 2006.
Jason Hirsh, RHP — This highly-touted prospect made his major-league debut last season and was 3-4 with a 6.04 ERA in nine starts.
Taylor Buchholz, RHP — Was 6-10 with a 5.89 in 19 starts and three relief appearances for Astros in ‘06.

Five days after a potential trade with the White Sox came apart, Houston acquired Jennings and pitcher Miguel Asencio from the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday for outfielder Willy Taveras and pitchers Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh — who all would have been sent to the White Sox.”

Jamal G. says:

Come on, Tex, be all clutch and shit.

MattG says:

Not at the same time, I hope!

Drew says:

V says:

Man, I wish we could combine Melky’s 15-20 HR power with Gardners plus speed, into one center fielder, heh.

Accent Shallow says:

I think the only desirable quality in a CF that one or the other of them lacks is the ability to consistently take good routes to balls.

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Come on tex base hit right here.

Ivan says:

Tiexeira hit a homer.

Drew says:

lets go yankees! haha only the yank fans stayed at the game

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

At least we tied the game.

BigBlueAL says:

9 fuckin runners left on base so far.

Chip says:

But three runs in!

Anthony says:

It’s okay, we’re about to dig right into Texas’ bullpen hopefully..

Charlie says:

tex needs to get clutchier

Chip says:

Eh, o well can’t win em all. At least we’re into the soft part of their bullpen with A-Rod coming up next inning

Anthony says:

Ahh watching Aceves pump strike after strike is so refreshing, I wonder if Joba’s knee had any effect on his lack of location tonight.

Jamal G. says:

I think it was the nine-day rest in conjunction with the two-hour-and-twenty-four-minute rain delay tonight.

Tom Zig says:

Anthony says:

I definitely agree on the 9 days rest part, but wouldn’t the delay have more of an effect if he had actually pitched before they delayed the game?

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

Aceves really turning into a very important piece for the yankees this season reminds me alot of mendoza.

I know, they’re both hispanic, right?

Accent Shallow says:

One of my favorite things about Joba is that on days when he’s not on, he doesn’t really seem to get bombed, just pitch extremely inefficiently. I’d rather 4 IP, 3 runs, 4 BB 5 K than 3 IP 8 hits, 5 runs every time.

Chip says:

He still needs to work on putting guys away though. Today he just didnt’ have his best stuff but I’d like to see more pitches near the zone on 1-2 counts. Right now everybody is just waiting him out

V says:

Exactly. If I’m a batter, and get into a 1-2 count, I’m just standing there.

V says:

SWISHER WHAT THE FUCK??

V says:

Ok, he didn’t get as close as I thought he did, but it looked like Gardner pulled up when he saw Swisher.

Drew says:

C’mon brett call that shit

BigBlueAL says:

Yankees CFers really suck at web gems.
