• Drew

I love it. We get on a hot streak, people start whining about guys like Robbie. WTF!?

    • Accent Shallow

Well, right now Robbie is a great complementary player. He has room to grow/mature/improve, but if he’s the best player on your team, your team’s in trouble.

Luckily, he’s not the best player on the Yankees

      • Drew

I don’t disagree, but not many “complimentary” players hit .318 in the AL East.

          Dustin Pedroia,
          Dustin Pedroia,
          Dustin Pedroia.
          THAT. JUST. HAPPENED.!

        • Don

I’ll give you Roberts, Utley, and Kinsler.

          I refuse to say Pedroia.

          • Zack

            What about O-dog?!?!!?

            • Don

Never said he was better, just a worthy replacement for 2009.

              • Zack

Well since Cano has a higher OPS+ then Pedroia, then Boston should have also traded Pedroia for say Matt Cain and signed Hudson.

                • Don

Dont doubt the Red Sox front office, they dealt Hanley Ramirez for Josh Beckett.

                • Accent Shallow

And although Beckett got them a ring in ’07, I’m willing to bet a fair percentage of their fanbase would like that one back.

          • Accent Shallow

Kinsler and Utley, I’ll spot you. Roberts? Nah. He’s a banjo hitter, and while he has Robbie on stolen bases, I can’t imagine he’s that much of a better defender.

            • Don

Cano has never had a year like Roberts did in ’05, before it ended to that horrific arm injury.

2.8 UZR/.988 FP (meaningless I know) for Roberts
              -4.6/.983 for Cano

              I’ll take Roberts.

              • Accent Shallow

And Roberts hasn’t shown that kind of power before or since, and is on the downside of his career. While Roberts has shown better defense over his career, he’s been around average the last few seasons, while Robbie’s been well below average (2008) and well above (2007 and 2009).

While Roberts has him on career value, I’d take Robbie, both at this second and going forward.

        • Accent Shallow

All I’m saying is that he’s a good player, but he’s not without his flaws, and he’s not a superstar. Maybe “complementary” isn’t the best way to phrase it, but he has his issues.

Utley and Pedroia both get on base more consistently, and are probably better defenders.

          • Zack

But Pedroia cant hit the high fastball

            • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Now why bring up his height? You know he’s sensitive about that!

            • Accent Shallow

Pedroia is an irritating, whiny, horseshit winner of an MVP award.

That said, he’s a good defender, and not entirely a product of Fenway as a hitter (although this year he’s only OPSing .747 on the road). Not to mention, he can take a walk.

              • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yes, but its a very short walk.

                • Zack

technically, it’s a long walk because it takes him more steps to get to first compared to the average sized ball player

I stand corrected. Good day, sir.

-A Yankee broadcaster describes something ARod does as “gritty gutty.”

    • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

      Perfect game

    • Accent Shallow

I realize this is a facetious question, but it’s gotta be option B. Perfect games are so damn rare, and no-hitters aren’t exactly common either. I wouldn’t be surprised if that ill-fated night in Texas is the closest Hughes ever gets to a no-hitter, even if he has a long and successful MLB career.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yes, that’s why I predicted Hughes pitches a no hitter tomorrow. His perfect game will be June 18th, 2012 vs the newly formed Las Vegas Sharks.

  • John

Anyone see Sherman’s colums from May 24? Here are some points:

-“Pitchers do not generally enjoy pitching to him for a variety of reasons, including his inadequacy at framing pitches and his sketchy game calling.”

-“Now, I have long been a huge supporter of Posada the catcher, including defending him in his own clubhouse. Over the years, I have heard plenty of off-the-record snipes from pitchers who did not particularly like Posada’s game-calling intellect or the lack of soft hands and finesse that enables a catcher to frame pitches well and steal strikes.
I would listen to the complaints and then offer one of the following responses: 1) You hate him all the way up to the three-run homer he hits to bail your sorry butt out. 2) Yeah, he’s terrible. That dynasty must have been in spite of him.
Yes, I admit it, I like Posada for both his skill and his passion.”

-“Nevertheless, I also think there is no coincidence that the best Yankee run of 2009 has come with others catching. Of course, there are many reasons why the Yankees have been playing better, including Alex Rodriguez’s return, Mark Teixeira’s revival and CC Sabathia’s ace-like work. But it also has something to do with the Yanks being better defensively. ”

“But it also has something to do with the Yanks being better defensively.”

…aaaaaand very little of that would have to do with the catcher.

I hate crap like this “it’s no coincidence, and maybe it has to do with replacing Ramiro Pena with ARod, Shitty Tex with real Tex, and Sabathia being able to command his fastball again (which has nothing to do with Posada, unless Posada was catching him in Cleveland last April too)…but I’ve managed to suggest it’s all Posada’s fault without actually saying that, so I’m done here.”

    • John

      some more:

“The bottom of the lineup — Cabrera, Gardner and Cervelli/Molina — would not be impressive. But what the Yanks could do is try to get an early lead and have the good defense to protect it. If they are not leading early, they could aggressively use pinch-hitters such as Matsui, Nick Swisher and (if he returns) Xavier Nady to attack late.”

      • whozat

Hey…here’s an idea…how about you play GOOD hitters so that you stand an actual chance of GETTING a lead…and then swap your better defenders in later?

I’m not really convinced that Damon-Gardner-Cabrera is so much better than Damon-Cabrera-Swisher that it makes much difference.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

If he plays in AA this year, he HAS to be the youngest player in AA, no?

        • Chris V.

I was trying to figure that out the other day. hes a few months younger than baumgarner (sp?) so I’m guessing yeh.

          • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Plus, you’d have to see who else gets promoted from other teams. But its safe to say ‘one of the youngest’

            • Chris V.

Yeh how many are younger than him in high A right now? 5-10?

  • John

Can Tomko hold a 5-run lead?

  • Zack

Did Kay just say Luke Scott’s return was ‘almost on par with Posada’?

    • Chris V.

haha yeh i know 8-14 with 6 homeruns is almost on par with posada.

  • pollo

One of the most depressing things I’ve ever seen was the decline of the Indians. I used to respect them cause of Bell-Belle-Thome-ManRam-Justice. Now they have douchebag Eric Wedge and a bunch of slap happy pansies.

Last inning for CC? I say yeah. I know he can go another but I’d like to get him out now.

  • V

Cavaliers are done. Down 58-40 at the half. LeBron scoreless in the 2nd quarter.

    • Zack

That’s the same as games 1-6. One team gets hot, gets a 10-20point lead, then blows it by the end of the 4th quarter. Orlando is +26 in the 3rd quarter, so if they can extend the lead it’d be even better.

  • yankeefan91 Arod fan

damm cavaliers getting that ass woop so far.

  • Drew

Okay, I know I bring this up often, but honestly, what does it take for YES to get a K zone? Can we send in a petition? I mean, we don’t even have a radar gun that works. The best franchise in sports should have a product that doesn’t come in dead last.
Kay + no K zone+ Shitty radar gun= No Bueno

    • whozat

Um…don’t they win emmys essentially yearly?

I kinda figure the lack of Kzone is a choice. The shitty radar gun is bizarre…I mean, I can get a more accurate speed reading over the internet –before– I see the pitch thrown on YES. Really?

      • John

I could get a better reading with my eyes!

      • Zack

        “regional emmys”

      • Drew

The production team earns emmy’s. I mean I don’t mind logging onto MLB.com to get my radar/location on pitches, it’d just be nice to have it on my expensive HD television through YES, call me crazy… Also, I watch a Pirates broadcast and they have a friggin K zone, give me something. I complained much less when we had a radar gun that worked, but now, I’m left looking at the computer after every pitch.

Sabathia is Catfish Hunter (Rest in Peace) reincarnated for the Yankees 30 years later.

    • Zack

Joba reminds Mike Francesca of Goose Gossage

      • Don

        Not making that comparison.

Just the equivalent of the jolt to the staff he brings combined with the amount of innings he pitches.

        Hes an absolute horse.

        • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Catfish wasn’t really THAT much of a horse. The year he threw 300+ innings was his last good season. Billy Martin blew his arm out and he was never the same. A horse would come back the next year and do it again.

              1.50?!

Only horrible pitchers like Josh Beckett, Liriano, Lester and Pettite and WHIPs around 1.50 this year

    • Drew

Never saw him pitch, but if u mean he’s the man, I agree.

      • Don

Neither did I Drew, but from what Ive heard he completely changed the dynamic on the pitching staff in 75.

        • Don

and yeah he is the man!

  • Ed

Let’s trade Sterling and Waldman to ESPN for a k-zone

    How about it?

    • yankeefan91 Arod fan

Not a bad idea at all.

    • Drew

In due time, hopefully he gets it together and can stay healthy. If he goes down again, I’d say we’d have to seriously considerate it. He’s got too much potential though to just give up on him now.

      • Drew

*Give up on him as a starter.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Again? He been hurt a zillion times as it is. We drafted him in 2004, its long past the time we should have seen some results.

        • Drew

I know, like I said, one more try…

    • whozat

TSJC has mentioned that a couple times. I think that, for now, he’s gotta get innings, and the easiest way to kickstart that process is by having him start at AA or wherever he is. If he puts together 30 innings that way, and is still healthy…then you maybe think about sending him up to the scranton pen and see what happens. Then again…if he’s healthy as a starter and destroying AA…maybe you just promote him to the AAA rotation and see what happens. But if he feels some twinges…

    • Drew

Sorry Broski, Defensive Ranking, defensive earned runs? What is DER?

      • whozat

        Defensive efficiency rating, I think.

The rate at which they turn balls in play into outs, I believe.

        Jose Veras, you suck.

        D-F-A! D-F-A!

        • BigBlueAL

Correct about your definition of DER.

          • Drew

You think that’s solely on our first baseman? He’s mad a UUUUUUUUGE difference.

            • whozat

Cano not sucking is helping too, and swapping Abreu out for Swisher/Nady.

  • Accent Shallow

Boy am I bummed that Ohka managed to save their pen.

    Very nice win, though.

  • whozat

So, Matsui seems like he’s hurting. When Nady comes back…do you maybe DL Matsui so he can take some time off? Or do you just go with giving him lots of time off? I mean…he’ll be basically useless for interleague play.

  • V

Umpires alway seem to shrink Swisher’s strike zone in blowouts.

    • V

      Er… expanding, not shrinking.

  • Accent Shallow

I missed Robertson’s inning. How did he look?

its totally despicable (i spelled that wrong) that veras is on our roster

    • whozat

I think you got it, actually.

    • Jeremy

You spelled despicable correctly, but I disagree with you, every team has a guy like Veras in the pen. He’s got some potential and can be solid for a stretch, but overall just isn’t reliable.

      • Drew

C’mon though, we also had Albie, E-Ram and Tomko, this isn’t isolated t0 “one guy.”

        • Jeremy

Oh sure, I agree that the pen is a disappointment. We should be getting good performances from Marte, we got nothing. Albie and E-Ram are undeperforming and Tomko is just filler.

Things will straighten out in time. I expect good things from D-Rob and, eventually, Melancon.

    • Charlie

yea, cause after veras gives up 5 more runs, we will bring in a FUCKING PITCHER. WTF CASHMAN? WHY IS HE STILL HERE????????????

    man i hate dat guy.

seriously, i was on the fence watching from the sideline on the veras patience/dfa debate….i still dont know if we dfa him because he could put it together somewhere…couldnt we try to sneak him through waivers? and then if someon claims him dont we have the opportunity to either trade him or let them have him? even for a single a scrub..

    • whozat

When you DFA someone, you have ten days to trade or release them. I think it IS “putting a guy on waivers”, the irrevocable kind.

  • Tank the Frank

Veras is living on borrowed time. He’s almost certain to be DFA’d. We’ve already seen Robertson take the place (hopefully) of Edwar/Albie… most likely Edwar. Next up is Melancon and I think once he comes up, he’ll stay up.

    • Jay

      I agree…

    • Charlie

Not really, cause our front office has absolutely no idea how to construct a roster. Veras shoulda been gone weeks ago, he is a disgrace

      • steve (different one)

yet the team is in first place. how is that possible?

      • MattG

57 good innings last year > 19 bad innings this year. He should not have been gone ‘weeks ago.’

        • Zack

But Robertson had 7 good innings this year so he’s our new 8th inning guy

  • http://www.votepaulformayor.blogspot.com jsbrendog

    • whozat

He wouldn’t be perfect at all. Look at his K:BB ratio, even last year in his “breakout” season. And he’s been pretty poor this year too. High WHIP, shitty K:BB.

it’s not THAT big a deal.

What would it take for the yankees to aquire leo nuñez from the marlins? dis kid is just nasty.

  • MattG

Alright, everyone come down on Veras. Yeah, he sucks right now. He’s the 7th man in the pen, the 12th man on the staff, and JG is using him to close out 7 run games. He can’t hurt the Yankees from there, and he might find whatever he had in 2008.

Enjoy 14 in 17, and stop it about the 12th pitcher.

    • Zack

“He can’t hurt the Yankees from there”

      Dont underestimate jose

      • steve (different one)

he tried Zack. he still couldn’t do it.

    • Jeremy

There has to be a whipping boy in the pen, and Veras is just filling that role.

      • Drew

Actually there’s been about 8 whipping boys in the pen.

    • Drew

Bro. So he’s ahead of Wang? I don’t want to give up on him either, but don’t act like he’s the last option in the pen.

      • MattG

Yeah, Wang’s ahead of Veras on my depth chart at this point.

        • Drew

Wang isn’t a relief pitcher though. I guess that’s where we disagree. Yeah, I’d rather Wang than Veras, that doesn’t mean I’d rather Jose come in in the 6th when Wang should be pitching (from the starting role). I don’t consider Wang a relief pitcher.
