Heyman: Yanks not seriously considering Pedro or Byrd

By

Jon Heyman spoke to GM Brian Cashman about the team’s pitching woes (5.93 ERA, worst in the bigs), and he said the Yanks can not seriously consider Pedro Martinez or Paul Byrd as options until they pitch somewhere and show something. That’s the nice of way os saying that their reputation means squat, and they have to prove they can still get big leaguers out. Pedro has a 4.99 ERA & 1.54 ERA WHIP in 25 starts over the last two years, while Byrd has a 4.73 ERA, 1.45 WHIP & 4.3 K/9 in 62 starts over the same span. This news from Heyman shouldn’t come as much of a shocker, but if nothing else it’ll make me sleep a little easier.

  1. Evan says:

I’m sure Pedro and Posada would get along great.

  2. Ivan says:

The pitching will be okay hopefully.

CC will bounce back, Burnett hopefully will do the same, Pettitte is steady, Joba and Hughes hopefully hardness their abilities and I think will happen.

  3. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Would probably help a whole lot to get one of those. Playoff chances generally increase if you weaken your rotation. This could be achieved way easier by just putting Joba in the pen.

    /sarcasm

    4.99 ERA & 1.54 WHIP

    LOL second time today.

  5. This should help the bullpen ERA: Aceves was called up for Claggett

  6. Al says:

Byrd sucks, and I see no reason to sign him ever this year unless Joba and Hughes get hurt or ineffective, and Wang stays the way he is now. We have cheaper in-house options that are either equal too or only slightly worse than Byrd.

I would only be interested in Pedro if he were to give it a shot in the bullpen. I have my doubts about his effectiveness there, but if he were a starting pitcher he would give a 5IP 4-5 ER performance everytime, at best.

    No thanks.

  7. Moshe Mandel says:

I need to point out that Damon just pronounced Teixeira’s name as Tex-era. Tex as in Texas.

  9. Tony says:

The real question: Why was Claggett up instead of a longman/starter or position player anyway?

    • steve (different one) says:

the real question: why does everyone think they need a longman?

      • CountryClub says:

It’s supposed to rain all week. If one of these games has a lot of stops and starts it would be nice to have someone that can come in after a 60 minute delay and act like a 2nd starter. Of course Aceves hasnt been great this year in AAA.

        • whozat says:

That does make sense…they’re not going to sit hughes or Joba down for a 90 minute rain delay after the third inning and have him crank it back up.

          • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

That’s one of the reasons I wanted a longman to start the season. You don’t want to trot out CC after such a delay either and there are normally a lot of rain delays early in the season.

          • steve (different one) says:

yes, that’s a fine explanation for why Aceves is up now.

i am more referring to how everyone has been harping on this for weeks, and it hasn’t really been an issue since they ditched the Wanger.

it just seems like complaining for the sake of complaining.

            • KW says:

The Yanks have been involved in plenty of blowouts, both on the winning and losing not just ones with Wang, and have played a few extra inning affairs. That, plus the usual northeast April/May weather conditions, necessitate the need for a long man. The starters have gone deep reasonably well lately, but there have been at least 6 occasions where the Yankees could have used a long man. (3 wang starts, CC’s opening day start, extra inning extravaganza against the As, 11-0 blowout of the tigers, 11-16 debacle against the sox).

Tell me you’d rather see useful pieces of the bullpen used in those situations rather than someone to soak up the innings.

      • Tony says:

A long man has been needed 5 or 6 times already. One could argue that a good part of the bullpen troubles stem from everyone getting overworked early on.

    • Bryan says:

Another question, why does Cashman keep calling these people up and then sending them down a day later? Doesn’t it use up their options?

    • Your guess is as good as mine.

  10. Heyman: Yanks not seriously considering Pedro or Byrd

In a related story, Generalissimo Fransisco Franco is still dead.

  11. leokitty says:

I don’t see how Byrd with his enormous homerun tendencies or Pedro, who is just armdead would be better than what the team’s got so no complaints from me.

Some of that ERA is inflated because of Wang and some of it is because the bullpen this year loves letting inherited runners score. It’s going to come down.

  12. Rich says:

I’m not sure why Heyman thinks the Yankees have any need for another starter.

  13. Moshe Mandel says:

Of course, if we signed Pedro, then we could have crappy “depth” like Boston has.

  14. Chris A says:

I never really thought the Yankees were considering Byrd, never mind Pedro. If they really need another starter they can just use Aceves, who was actually just called up. http://yankees.lhblogs.com/200.....-claggett/

  15. Mike Pop says:

Mike F just said Sabathia is going to give up 250 hits this year.

    • CountryClub says:

Francessa will always throw jabs at CC because he knows that CC’s availability this summer is part of the reason why the Yanks didnt go after Johan. And he loves Johan. Never mind that Johan pitches in the NL, we’ll have to hear comparisons for at least the next 4 years.

      • KW says:

Well, Johan is off to an incredible start so far and has been remarkably consistent and healthy. And he pitched pretty damn well last year. Don’t discredit a great pitcher for the league he throws in.

        • CountryClub says:

Yup, Johan has been great so far and CC has been less so. But it’ll never be a fair comparison because the NL lineups are generally weaker than the AL’s.

  16. Big Blue ST3 says:

I’m a little confused. Live down here in S. Florida, is the game rained out or not? I’ve heard it’s been raining all day but ESPN is saying its still a go to this point.

    • Big Blue ST3 says:

And Byrd or Pedro would be a terrible waste of time. What a waste of time even thinking about those two.

    • pat says:

It’s an espn broadcasted game I’m sure they won’t announce it until closer to game time, don’t wanna lose those viewers you know?

  17. Just to put this out there in case you were curious, we’re also not interested in Curt Schilling, David Wells, Greg Maddux, Kevin Brown, Roger Clemens, John Burkett, Bill Pulsipher, Brien Taylor, Phil Niekro, Jim Abbott, Doug Drabecky, Sam Militello, Gaylord Perry, Ferguson Jenkins, Catfish Hunter, Don Drysdale, Whitey Ford, Red Ruffing, Lefty Grove, Mordecai “Three-Finger” Brown, Ol’ Ross Hadbourn, Eddie Ciccote, Pud Galvin, or Abner Doubleday.

I can neither confirm nor deny any mutual interest in Oil Can Boyd.

    • UWS says:

I dunno, man…Wells seems to be in fine shape still.

Round is a shape, after all.

    • jsbrendog says:

although there were rumblings scott kamienicki was being watched by yankee scouts as he played catch with his dog in his backyard.

    • Slu says:

Shit, Oil Can would probably be just as effective as Byrd or Pedro.

Man is this a non-story. Was anyone even speculating on the Yankees and Byrd/Pedro?

I am also available to pitch out of the bullpen, but I guess since I haven’t pitched since Junior High, Cashman is not interested in me either, unless I sign for an independent team for a few weeks.

    • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

I can’t believe the Yankees are not trying to sign Christy Matthewson and Walter Johnson. Those two are first-ballot Hall of Famers.

    • Sweet Dick Willie says:

Too bad Cash isn’t considering Old Hoss Radborn. Man, he had a great year in ’84. 59-12 w/ a 1.38 ERA nad 73 CG. Would def give the BP a rest.

      Oh, that was 1884, btw.
