He could have gotten more but he took the team's first offer in the offseason (in Japan, players negotiate their salaries after each season before hitting free agency. It's kind of like arbitration without the arbitrator). Darvish has nothing in common with Igawa -- he has velocity for one thing. Igawa was hittable in Japan on days his curveball wasn't working. Anything can happen, of course. If the Yankees had been watching Igawa in 2002/3 (a couple of years before being posted, like Darvish possibly is now), they would have been pretty impressed as he was at the top of his game.
