Montero hurt in Tampa loss

Posted by: | Comments (19)

Make sure you scroll down for tonight’s game thread.

Shelley Duncan is your International League Offensive Player of the Week. Carlos Pena and Cubs’ prospect Jake Fox are the only players in professional baseball that have hit more homer than Shelley, who had nine coming into today.

According to CBS Sports, Sergio Mitre threw two scoreless innings in Extended Spring Training today. He’s rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and is expected to be ready at mid-season. He’s conveniently serving a 50-game banned substance suspension right now as well. (h/t Rafi for the email)

Oh, and the Yanks are being sued by a former scout for three million big ones.

Triple-A Scranton (7-5 win over Indianapolis)
Kevin Russo: 4 for 5, 1 R, 2 RBI - nice return from the leg injury
John Rodriguez: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI – dude’s rockin’ a ~.950 OPS
Todd Linden: 1 for 5, 1 K – 19 game hit streak
Shelley Duncan: 1 for 5, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K – make that 10 homers
Juan Miranda: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 BB
Austin Jackson: 2 for 5, 3 K
Eric Duncan: 0 for 5, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
PJ Pilittere: 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B – 9 for his last 15 (.600)
George Kontos: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 5-4 GB/FB - 59 of 88 pitches were strikes (67.0%) … rough first AAA outing
Zach Kroenke: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2-3 GB/FB – 20 of 32 pitches were strikes (62.5%)
Anthony Claggett: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HP, 1-2 GB/FB
Brett Tomko: 1 IP, zeroes, 0-3 GB/FB -  16 of 28 pitches were strikes (57.1%)

Game 25 Spillover Thread II

I knew that Yanks-Sox games were usually marathons, but it’s after 10pm and they’ve only played two innings. This is ridiculous.

I’ll be here all week folks.

It must be Yanks-Sox if we need a spillover thread before first pitch. Game starts at 9:20, hope you don’t have work in the morning.

Game 25: Rain rain, go away

Posted by: | Comments (258)

It’s raining in the Bronx, and the radar doesn’t look too promising. They say they want to get this game in tonight, but expect a lengthy delay first. Feel free to use this post as an open thread while we wait for first pitch.

In injury news, Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus noted that because Xavier Nady has already had Tommy John surgery once before, his elbow ligament is actually a tendon. That could affect how much the experimental platelet-rich plasma procedure actually helps him. Hopefully there’s no issues and Nady comes back sooner rather than later.

Anywho, here’s the lineup should this one ever get underway:

Jeter, SS
Damon, LF
Teixeira, 1B
Swisher, RF
Cano, 2B
Posada, DH
Melky, CF
Molina, C
Berroa, 3B

And on the mound, number sixty-five, Phil Hughes.

Yanks recall Al Aceves

Posted by: | Comments (118)

You’ve probably heard by now, but just in case: The Yankees have recalled RHP Alfredo Aceves from AAA Scranton. To free up room on the 25-man they’ve optioned RHP Anthony Claggett. This gives the Yanks a long man, though they probably don’t much need one at this point. I have a feeling this move is in anticipation of a rainout tonight. Aceves would probably start one game of a doubleheader tomorrow. That would keep the rotation on regular rest. If they were to go Hughes-Joba tomorrow, they’d have to find another starter to fill in on Saturday in Baltimore, since they wouldn’t dare throw either on three days’ rest. If the game gets called tonight, look for an Aceves-Hughes doubleheader tomorrow.

Jon Heyman spoke to GM Brian Cashman about the team’s pitching woes (5.93 ERA, worst in the bigs), and he said the Yanks can not seriously consider Pedro Martinez or Paul Byrd as options until they pitch somewhere and show something. That’s the nice of way os saying that their reputation means squat, and they have to prove they can still get big leaguers out. Pedro has a 4.99 ERA & 1.54 ERA WHIP in 25 starts over the last two years, while Byrd has a 4.73 ERA, 1.45 WHIP & 4.3 K/9 in 62 starts over the same span. This news from Heyman shouldn’t come as much of a shocker, but if nothing else it’ll make me sleep a little easier.
