A-Rod back tomorrow

By Benjamin Kabak

Update 5:22 p.m.: The tireless AP checked in from Florida one last time, and A-Rod is heading to Baltimore to meet the Yanks. The Post reported today that A-Rod will definitely be activated tomorrow, but the Yankees confirmed this news a few minutes ago. A-Rod, out since mid-March with a hip injury, played just three innings today in Extended Spring Training and then thanked the Tampa support staff after the game. His return will be welcome indeed. (I do wonder though why he couldn’t have made it to New York in time for tonight’s rain out game.)

In other rehab news, Chien-Ming Wang threw 72 pitches over five scoreless innings today. His sinker was sinking, according to Billy Connors. Wang hopes to make two or three more starts before returning to the Bronx. That would put his return sometime around the May 29-31 series in Cleveland.

According to PeteAbe, Yanks made it offical.

A-Rod will be ack tomorrow.

Yeah yeah yeah. I saw! I was too busy breaking some transit news to update this one first. It’s since been corrected.

Thank you though for the head’s up.

Anyhthing to keep the procrastination dream alive!

You’re telling me. I have an 8-hour take-home final to take tomorrow.

15 page paper (on #4) and final tomorrow…

Doubt anyone at RAB is familiar with Augustine or Thomas Aquinas.

Shame.

E-ROC says:

I know a little of Saint Thomas Aquinas.

Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I think Thomas Aquinas liked The Beatles more than The Roliing Stones.

Doug says:

What do you think we are, a uncultured mob of Philistines?

I took a month-long Philosophy seminar on the Confessions (my school has J-terms), just because all my friends were. You should mention in your paper his struggle with sex dreams.

And I know all about the scholasticism. History major for the win.

Will (the other one) says:

Just remember – Augustine’s entire eschatology late in life was a direct result of his belief that the Roman world as he knew it was about to collapse. Oh, well, that and the fact that he’s just a pain in the nutsack.

AJ says:

I go to the University of Scranton, which loves St. Thomas Aquinas.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

JobaWockeeZ says:

Hopefully he can start turning us around. And who said we’d be a better team without him? Now people are starting to appreciate him more.

Drew says:

Excellent news all around. I’d like to hear Contreras’s thoughts on Wanger’s last two starts. Also, why not have A-rod up here now? Now that’d be a hell of a pinch hitter/DH tonight. Probably best not to play 3rd though because we seemingly live in Seattle now, minus a retractable roof.

Cor Shep says:

hell yea – get to see arod is his first day back!!!

John says:

AJ says:

I said this the other night, but let’s not all hail A-Rod as the savior just yet. While I do think his presence in the line-up should help some guys like Texiera get going, he might struggle to hit with RISP just like everyone else. But he does slightly diminish the black hole that is the 8 & 9 spots in the order. I’m excited to see him play, but I’m not betting my college tuition he has a 7 home run game tomorrow night and blows everyone away.

pat says:

I don’t think anybody is epecting him to be a superhero, he just has to be a teensy bit better than handsome ramiro ransom.

But he does slightly diminish the black hole that is the 8 & 9 spots in the order.

OK. I realize Yankee fans have an irrational hatred of A-Rod and an inability to comprehend that some of 120 runs he drives in every year actually count, but to say that he “slightly diminish[es] the black hole” at the bottom of the lineup is nuts.

Here’s what the lineup looks like tonight:

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Matsui DH
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Cabrera CF
Pena 3B
Molina C

Here’s what it will look like tomorrow

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui DH
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Cabrera CF
Molina C

Considering how well Melky has played so far this year, that is a significant, significant improvement.

Now just wait for Posada to get back:

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui 1B
Posada C
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Cabrera CF

Concievably, if Nady returns and you want to spell Melky or Johnny you could do

Jeter SS
Damon LF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui 1B
Posada C
Cano 2B
Nady RF
Swisher CF

Or

Cabrera CF ?
Jeter SS
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui 1B
Posada C
Cano 2B
Nady LF
Swisher RF

Cor Shep says:

God I can’t wait till everyone is back..

Buy with how it’s gone in a measly month – I doubt this is all the injuries we see this year… ugh our team is so old lol

JobaWockeeZ says:

OMFG! This lineup has a bench.
I though that idiot Cashman didn’t get us a bench!

Tom Zig says:

Matsui at 1B? I’d love to see a UZR on that one.

LMAO, sorry, c/ped Abaraham’s line up there

I could probably run the VORP comparison and win shares to tell you just how much of a jump A-Rod gives the team, but it’s on the order of probably 7 wins over Peña at least.

Spaceman.Spiff says:

I don’t need goddamn spreadsheets to know that A-Rod is worth more than 7 more wins than Ramiro Pena.

steve (different one) says:

to be fair, i read this as Alex might not jump in right away and be ALEX F’ING RODRIGUEZ. it might take him a few weeks.

Matt ACTY says:

I’m pumped A-Rod is coming back but there’s a small part of me saying “this feels rushed” that I can’t ignore.

Recovery for his surgery is 6-9 weeks. He’s coming back after 8 weeks. Considering that he’s a young athlete in prime physical shape, that’s a pretty conservative recovery time really.

Matt ACTY says:

Yeah, you’re probably right. I’m just letting the pessimism soak on through.

MattG says:

But what about Wang? 3 more weeks? That sounds horribly conservative. I’d like him to have one more start like this one, and then return in a bullpen role. With Wang and Aceves in the pen, the Yankees could finally go with the 11 man staff and have Miranda and Shelley/Linden on the bench.

pat says:

So you now want to have TWO longmen? One of whom was a back to back 19 game winner?

MattG says:

Given the alternative–pitching in EST–yes.

MattG says:

Until he’s ready to start again, that is. If the sinker’s sinking, he should be in the major leagues, whatever the role.

pat says:

Yes but pitching out of the bullpen will not give him enough gametime to get his arm back up to snuff. He needs to be in EST building the arm strength by throwing simulated games every 5 days like a normal starter. Hughes can stand to make another start or two until CMW is ready to roll.

Mr. Rodriguez says:

I think we’ve seen that aceves can be a guy that gets us outs. He’s young and has already pitched in big games in Mexico. This guy was okay against the Sox (obviously had the hiccup which contributed to the loss) but I think he can contribute in the pen. I think this turns around soon. More consistent production all around hopefully. That’s my guess

CJ says:

Should I trade Longoria or A-Rod? Have both in fantasy….

Keeper League: Trade A-Rod
Regular League: A-Rod is probably better than the guy you have in your UTIL/DH spot so why trade A-Rod and not the other guy?

This would explain why I always finish last in my fantasy leagues.

DON’T GUTTER THAT.

SJ44 says:

A HUGE step toward getting this team back on the rails.

Manny also does him a big favor and knocks him off the front page.

Nice of Manny to be such a good friend.

“Nice of Manny to be such a good friend”

This may actually upstage the “Juan Pierre must be thrilled” from earlier.

CJ says:

True but I think I can get a big pitcher for Longoria…thanks for the advice though.
