Tomko up; Robertson down

Constructing a roster the Yankee way
What made CC so effective last night?

According to PeteAbe, the Yanks have made another roster move today. The purchased the contract of Brett Tomko from AAA and optioned down David Robertson. Because Tomko isn’t on the 40-man roster, the team will have to make another move today. It hasn’t been announced yet, and I’ll update this post when it is.

I guess the team made this move for depth, but I don’t see why. Tomko had been pitching well at AAA, but he’s 36 with a career ERA+ of 92 and a WHIP of 1.374. The Yanks could use him as a long man, but Al Aceves did an admirable job earlier this week. Robertson had made five appearances for the Yanks. In 4.2 innings, he had allowed two earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out seven.

Update 6:35 p.m.: Eric Hacker has been DFA’d. Ian Kennedy can’t be put on the 60-day DL because he was not on the Major League roster when he was disabled.

maybe they’re moving Kennedy to the 60 day DL.

    it’s possible.

    • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

I hope this is the case.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Benjamin Kabak

      That’s probably it. Good call.

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona

I would be shocked if it were anything else.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        DFA’ing Hacker wouldn’t shock me.

        • http://bronxbaseballdaily.baby-bombers.com/ Matt ACTY/BBD

          OMG! U r teh geenyus!

  • Mike Pop

Hmm, if I had to guess. I would say Hacker.

  • Rod

I really don’t get the roster moves this season at all.

    • Scooter

I wonder if Tomko had an ‘out’ in his contract – it was promote him or lose him.

Tomko’s a failed starter – but has been OK out of the pen.

Two possibilities as far as 40-man roster moves:
      IPK to the 60-day DL
      OR
      Berroa gets DFA-ed

The question remains – why DFA Jackson, unless there’s a trade in the works?

At some point Berroa will get flushed (I’d rather have Pena, Russo or Malec in the majors), and IPK will need to go to the 60-man roster.

  • daneptizl

    Sending Melancon and Robertson down… ……. …

they’re hell bent on getting something out of Veras.

    • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

Maybe when one of them is brought back up again, Veras will be DFA’d.

  • Drew

Whatever. Another guy to be sitting out in the pen while Joe calls on Veras or Albie.

  • Accent Shallow

I guess they’re hoping Tomko can stay hot? Maybe showcase him for a PTBNL trade?

I’d rather see Robertson remain in the bigs, he’s maintained a ridiculous strikeout rate even when he’s getting hit, seems as good as indication as any that he’ll figure it out.

  • cult of basebaal

At first I wasn’t particularily bothered by this move, then I looked up Tomko’s splits over the last couple of years.

Christ, he’s been worse as a reliever than a starter … and he’s SUCKED as a starter.

    ugh.

  • http://www.twitter.com/MatthewHarris84 Matt H

Hey, if he is an effective arm in the pen, then why not. He’s been lights out in 3A, and while it is the minors, I think giving him a shot isn’t a bad thing.

Plus if they didn’t do it by June 1 he becomes a FA, right?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Benjamin Kabak

He’s 36 with 12 seasons of Major League experience under his belt. I’m willing to completely overlook five weeks of AAA numbers and assess him on what he’s done against real competition. I don’t expect much.

      • http://www.twitter.com/MatthewHarris84 Matt H

Oh, I totally agree, but results are results, and hey, why not try to catch lightning in a bottle.

Pen help is so much guess work that he’s worth a look.

  • Bill O

I think they’re simply just looking for guys out of the pen that can throw strikes.

Robertson kind of got jobbed. I though he deserved more of a shot.

The real crime here though is not bringing up another batter. Our bench is barren and we could really use a pinch hitter with Catchers that will likely struggle to hit .200. Gardner is nothing more than a pinch runner/defensive replacement. We really need someone like Miranda off the bench who could come in and hit for Cervelli late in a game in a key situation.

    • Drew

      Bonds. :)

      • http://actyankee.blogspot.com Matt ACTY

I would’ve loved for the Yankees to get Bonds last year.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        Drew says:
        Bonds.

        Frank. Thomas.

THAT JUST HAPPENED. IS YOUR MIND BLOWN?

        • Drew

What is that a catch phrase or uhh epilepsy?

  • Manimal

Berroa should be gone, Pena has proven that he could take over and be an adequate third basemen.

    • Accent Shallow

I have no problem with hanging on to Berroa for a little while longer to see if A-Rod is truly healthy.

If he’s still on the roster in mid-June, I won’t be thrilled.

  • steve (different one)

not crazy about this move at all.

but i forgot about the out in his contract. i guess they are trying to catch lightning in a bottle, b/c his comments at the end of ST indicated he would definitely excercise the out if he’s not in the bigs.

that said, with Kennedy to the DL, they get a bit of a “free” roster spot here. they can check him out for 2 weeks, see if he’s worth anything (i am doubtful), then release him.

Berroa is probably only here until they see how A-Rod reacts to playing a few days. i don’t have a problem with that.

  • Mike

Good for Tomko! He deserve a shot because he pitch well down in AAA. I just don’t get why robertson got sent down he pitched well in his last game even though he walk in a run. I can’t understand why someone who can help use got sent down yet ramirez and veras are still on the roster. He may not have the stuff veras has but he casn throw strikes and that is very important. Also, robertson has much more potential then ramirez has and more useful in the long term than him. I think i know what will happen: when you are sent down you can’t come back up for 10 days unless their is an injury. The yankees will probably give those two jokes, veras and ramirez these next 10 days and if their still pitching bad and robertson and melancon are pitching well they will make the switch. I really think that both veras and ramirez lost their motivation to be in the bigs after the years they had last year. The two of them probably figure that their spots are secure in that pen. if that the case they are wrong because the only secure spot right now for those who are healthy in the pen are rivera, coke and maybe aceves who is the long man. Veras and ramirez can and will lose their spots very quickly.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Benjamin Kabak

Good for Tomko! He deserve a shot because he pitch well down in AAA.

True for a 24 year old. Not quite as true for a 36 year old with below-average numbers and stuff.

      • Mike

I know theres the age difference but if he can help why not give it him a shot. I just wish robertson wasn’t the one who had to go.

Any chance of getting an open thread? That inning was fun.

        • MyNameIsNed

Fun as it may have been, Ned says no.

But what does Ned know, Ned just started making comments the other day.

Anyone else know the fun in talking about your self in the third person?

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Benjamin Kabak

Whizzo knows the fun of that too.

Ned enjoys talking about himself in the third person. Does anyone else enjoy this as much as Ned does?

Also, your name should be “Ned’sNameIsNed”

If you’re going to go third person, Broseph, you’ve got to go all out or not at all.

            • Drew

Jimmy’s ready, Jimmy’s got some new moves, check Jimmy out. Jimmy’s down!

I knew a some people out there would get down with that action.

  • Charlie

This move doesn’t make any sense. Robertson should not have been sent down.. he was doing fine. Melancon and Robertson should both be in the Yankee bullpen right now and Girardi should actually be making use of more than 2 of his relievers. The yanks really are obsessed with old players.

Can we please get something resembling a bat called up?

  • MyNameIsNed

And everyone here at RAB… I just wanted to say thanks for making work better every day reading all of the awesome content. I have been an everyday reader for 2 years now from CT, and I have told all of my Yankee friends about you guys. Thanks again, and I will keep the ass kissing to myself from now on.

  • A.D.

Perhaps this means Aceves going down to get regular work in AAA, and Miranda up?

  • NHYankee62

While it would’ve been nice to see Melancon and Robertson get more chances to pitch up here, I think that having both Tomko and Aceves makes sense with Hughes and Joba pitching in back to back starts. Both are young pitchers with innings limits and have a tendency to throw alot of pitches (meaning they may only give you around 5 innings). If that were to happen on consecutive days, having 2 relievers that can each throw a few extra innings can only help. In fact, it could be one of the keys to winning the series. If all you have is a bunch of 1 innings relievers and the starters don’t give you the innings, your pen could get spent in a hurry.
Not much has worked with the pen so far this year, why not give this a shot?

  • cult of basebaal

Everyone who had Hacker for the DFA, come on down and collect your prize!

Evidently, Kennedy can’t be moved to the 60 day DL since he was not on the ML Roster (this from Petey).

    Which is something I didn’t know …

    • Accent Shallow

Wouldn’t be the first time the intricacy of roster moves caught us unawares.

This is a bit frustrating, and definitely creates some 40-man crunch. Hopefully Berroa will be gone as soon as A-Rod proves he’s healthy.

  • http://newstadiuminsider.blogspot.com Ross

Free Robertson. This is ridiculous. He is one of the guys they need to give the chance to work through the struggles. He can be huge for them in the second half!

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.baby-bombers.com/ Matt ACTY/BBD

+1. He needs to stop being jerked around. The next time he gets called up should be the last.
