Simmons tries really hard to ignore the obvious…that it’s not age but PED use (or lack thereof). Considering his health scares a couple of years ago, Ortiz probably decided that living long enough to see his grandchildren was more of a priority than acting like Barry Bonds-lite. And the Sox are well aware of his roid use. Why do you think his salary is less than half of what it should be given his amazing stretch from 2004 through 2007?

Eh, Simmons’s articles are rarely, if ever, based in fact. This goes doubly for anything baseball related.

Releasing Mags makes a degree of sense because of his vesting option. Releasing him will put him on the market for a week or so, which might (or might not) be enough to set him back and not hit that plate appearance clause.

Wow did any of you read the article by bill simmons over at espn? It sounds like David Ortiz could be the next has been trying to get back to the majors via the mexican league. He thinks the the red sox will release david ortiz…i dont know…I think that sox fans would take it as a sign the season is over. Similarly I read on MLB trade rumors that Detroit is considering releasing Magglio Ordonez…crazy world….
