Well, Wang is out. Certainly not great, but hardly as bad as that disastrous April. I prefer to look at him as making some progress. But, in hindsight I might have left him in the bullpen a little longer.

Not a good start, but it could have been worse. I wonder what happens from here. Do they send him out for his next start? If it continues to look like Hughes gives the team a better chance to win on any given day, how long a leash does Wang get to figure his stuff out?

People are freaking out for no reason! His velocity’s going to go up a tick after a few starts, and his ball’s mostly been down. His main mistake has been scouting: lefties are taking decent to good sinkers and serving them to left (softly, for the most part!). Give them credit. Wang and Cervelli need to change the strategy vs. lefties.
I’m relieved, frankly.
His first real mistake was his last pitch, the Cruz homer (what a shot!). JoeG should let him get to 80 pitches, it’s ridiculous that he’s pulling him. He’s only at 69 pitches. They can’t expect to get him back if they don’t let him pitch, especially when he hasnt been awful–and he hasnt been today.

He only got half-shelled, IMO, so it’s a no-brainer. The Yankees need to get CMW back to 100% by October, because we need him in the playoff rotation.
Wang’s last playoff performances werent too good. I dont think this rotation needs him as much as before.
With Hughes and Joba both on innings caps, there’s probably a 50/50 shot Hughes can start a game in the playoffs and a far smaller likelhood that Joba can (like, 10%.)

Agreed. As I’ve said, I think Joba will pitch in the playoffs, but likely out of the bullpen. They aren’t going to let him make multiple starts in the postseason.
Or we can trade melky, cano, ipk and kei igawa for somebody like peavy, and then sign glavine to an incentive laden $10million dollar deal…

Usually after a game where we don’t score a lot of runs and lose…and I have to rest my very above average offensive hitting catcher…I think it’s a good idea to offset that by also sitting my very above average offensive hitting short stop while having 2 below average hitting players in their place…

The level of intelligence on this blog right now is cratering. Seriously people, he has a bad outing that happens to every pitcher (not the incredibly bad outings he had earlier in the season) against the best hitting team in the league and suddenly everybody is calling for his head.
Get this, Wang is a better pitcher than Hughes. Yes, Hughes has had luck against Texas but that in no way means that he will continue to have success against them. The only ball really tagged was the one Cruz hit out and you could tell the guy was winded by that time. Remember, he just threw 3 innings of relief a few nights ago. Now let’s give him his normal rest and see what he has against Boston
Talk about a tough way to go come back….Texas then Boston…ugh.

That’s a really, really interesting take on the situation.
He (Wang) is not the “usual” CMW, just having a bad outing today. He was screwed up by a serious injury, and has had major problems since returning. This was not a good outing. Maybe it wasn’t as bad as his other starts this year, but it was still bad. The whole point of a sinkerball pitcher is that you’re not supposed to be able to poke soft liners to left field. That ball is supposed to end up being fielded by the SS and 3b.
He’s going to get pounded by Boston, you watch.

Totally agree. But you also have to understand that is can be a very pro-hughes crowd. Not that it’s bad in anyway.
I’m not entirely sure that’s true. Supposedly sinker ball pitchers throughout baseball history have experienced spells where they lose the feel for the pitch. And Wang was always walking a tightrope with his low K rate, which made his success greatly dependent on a) the fielders behind him and b) not giving up XBH.
If he can’t mix up his pitches enough (his slider was very flat today) to keep the hitters from cheating on his sinker (and thus getting XBH), he may not be good enough right now.

Hughes can’t locate his curveball consistently. Once Hughes can do that and learn to finish off hitters, he might be better than Wang. Look, I’m the biggest Hughes supporter out there but he hasn’t put it together yet

all this talk about small sample sizes…two years of 19 wins does not equate to a dominant pitchers who should be given all of this leeway. Not too mention his ERA has risen every year since 06. I mean if they’re still going to develop a pitcher, like Wang, who seemingly needs some more pitches, why not stick with Hughes.
I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were a pitching expert. Which pitches should Wang learn specifically? What do you want him to add to his 4 seamer, 2 seamer, slider, change-up and splitter? Maybe we can get somebody in here to team him the knuckleball!
No, but I think it is reasonable to point out that Wang doesn’t have all those pitches working now. His sinker is better than it was, but hardly dominant yet. And his other pitches aren’t good enough right now (or he doesn’t trust them enough) to make up the difference.
True, but that could be just from being rusty. He hasn’t exactly had a chance to throw many changeups and splitters in a game lately. I want to see him on normal rest and after he gets his side session in before I jump to conclusions

So, while this is improvement for Wang, do you still let him make his next start against Boston? Texas mashes but Boston is more patient and still a very good offensive team. I just don’t see how the Yankees can allow a starter who goes 4 1/3, gives up 5 and considers it an improvement to continue pitching in this rotation. Not trying to be a negative nancy or anything, just a legitimate situation.
I start him at Boston. If he sucks there, I give him one last shot to boost his confidence against the hapless Nats. If he can’t cut it then either, he gets pulled.
They are patient but when you pound strikes they have to swing. Wang is getting there. What’s the point in skipping him…

I’m not sure that he was the better signing. Starting pitchers are much more volatile and injury prone than 1B. CC’s best case is far more valuable than Tex’s, but the downside is also much worse.
