  1. Jake H says:

While I respect what Godzilla did for us he is so done.

I don’t understand why you sit Hughes for such a long time.

  2. Charlie says:

girardi should be terminated if phil doesn’t pitch today.

  3. Dave says:

Really gotta put something together against Sonnestine, they guy is on pace for 100 pitch complete game…

    • Charlie says:

that’s pretty pathetic against a pitcher of his caliber… our offense has fallen asleep the past few innings

    • Accent Shallow says:

Luckily, he’s not a good pitcher, so this “going down in order” thing is unlikely to continue.

  4. dygg says:

How have the Yankees scored 3 runs, and Sonnanstine has only thrown 61 pitches through 5?

  5. pc69 says:

Prior to the start of this half inning, Pettitte is averaging 6.2 pitches per AB.

  6. Mike Axisa says:

You know the worst part is? When Hughes finally gets put in a game, most likely in Fenway, he’ll probably suck because he hasn’t pitched in over a week.

  7. BigBlueAL says:

Dont worry Tomko is warming up.

  8. Yankee1010 says:

Would they really go to Tomko before Hughes? If they’re not going to use him over Tomko, please send him to AAA so he can get some work/innings in.

  9. The Artist says:

  10. pc69 says:

That is more like it, but I still prefer Hughes over Pettitte.

  11. Everyone needs to temper their expectations with Andy here. We were never expecting him to be a 120 ERA+ ace. We were expecting him to give us a 95-105 ERA+, basically a league average pitcher able to make every turn through the rotation and soak up 200+ innings at quality start level (4.50 ERA) so that we would have the roster flexibility to deal with the expected (Joba and Hughes being shut down/skipped/limited) and the unexpected (setbacks in Wang’s recovery, which has already happened, or injuries to other pitchers like Burnett and IPK, one of which has already happened.)

Andy’s not an ace. We didn’t ask him to be an ace. We asked him to pitch into the 6th and 7th inning and give us a chance to win… which he just did tonight.

  12. gxpanos says:

Hughes HAS to pitch the rest of this.

  13. Accent Shallow says:

That was an A.J. Burnett start from Pettitte.

    6 innings, over 100 pitches, 7 Ks, 3 walks.

  14. The Artist says:

    Nice job by Andy.

103 pitches, let him come out for the 7th and go batter to batter.

  15. John says:

    6 IP+3 ER=Quality start

    • Zach says:

only 2ER, so better then a quality start

    • pc69 says:

true. But that should not be the definition of a quality start. A starter should have to pitch 7 innings. 2/3 of a game should not qualify.

      • Zach says:

it depends on your definition of quality.

6innings, 3ER is a 4.50 era. In the AL as a 4-5 starter I’ll take that at the end of the year anytime.

7innings, 3ER is 3.86 era, is that just “quality” for a pitcher?

  16. Zach says:

    6 innings, 3 runs, 2 ER, 3 BB, 6K

wow get this guy out of the rotation

    • Drew says:

      the horse is dead

      • Charlie says:

        +100

      • Zach says:

no come on, lets DFA him and bring up “someone” and that someone will do just as good, if not better

        • Drew says:

Okay bro. First of all I never said anything about Andy that wasn’t true. I never said I didn’t want him. I simply said if Andy was not re-signed someone else would have pitched his innings which is a brutally obvious assertion. Please direct your condescending sarcasm to the rightful party.

          • Dorian says:

Jesus Zach what has Andy done for you in the past week.

          • Drew says:

I think that should be deserving party. hmm..

          • I simply said if Andy was not re-signed someone else would have pitched his innings which is a brutally obvious assertion.

If the opening day rotation is CC-AJ-Wang-Joba-Hughes, when Wang shits the bed and goes to Tampa EXST, if Andy’s starts are Phil’s, then Phil’s seven starts are going to IPK (who’s hurt), Jason Johnson (who’s hurt), or we pull Aceves out of the bullpen and weaken it further, or we add Casey Fossum or Kei Igawa back to the 40-man.

Andy Pettitte being resigned = good.

            • Drew says:

“Andy Pettitte being resigned = good.”= opinion.
I never even said it was bad. What the hell is going on here? Pablo said it was bad.
              Gimme a friggin break.

        • Charlie says:

dude, that’s enough already, you made your point, but you’re way overdoing it and it wasn’t good to begin with

          • Zach says:

good, so dont make judgements about a pitcher halfway through a game because at the end it looks dumb

            • Charlie says:

              shame on me

            • Drew says:

We know you LOVEEEEE AP. That’s fine. After his last start, if people want to say bad things about your buddy, they have the right. It does not make their judgment look “dumb.”

              • Zach says:

Last start has nothing to do with the 4th inning of this game in which the prior 3 innings he had 6ks and gave up 2ER in the inning.

I’m sorry our #4 pitcher cannot have a bad game. CC gave up 5 ER in 8innings, what was your reaction during that game?

                • Drew says:

I was happy and jumping up and down. I nearly jizzed in my pants.
You’re snarky sarcasm wears very thin.
Just because you don’t like what a person says, does not make them or their remarks or judgments dumb. BTW, I’m not even the person that said anything bad about Pettitte other than he’s been outpitched by many of the guys he’s faced this year.

                • Zach says:

You’re not the Drew who said “someone” when the question was asked who would replace Pettitte? Or said he wasnt ‘irreplacable’ – which i never said he was, but who on the roster is going to replace what hes done so far?

Their remarks arent dumb because I disagree with them, they’re dumb because it’s the 4th inning and he gave up 3R (2ER) and they’re saying Hughes needs to take his spot, we should have never signed him, Aceves or Kontos could have replaced him just as well, etc. And he ends up going 6IP, 3R, 2ER and they’re no where to be seen

                • Drew says:

I think I said indispensable, and yes I said “someone.” Isn’t that obvious? Lol how is that anything bad about Andy?
As for someone on the roster replacing him, I never said he was or wasn’t on the current roster. Maybe it’s Alf, maybe it’s Hughes, maybe we make a trade when our number 2/3 starter performs horrendously out of the gate.
Maybe in hindsight it’s the best signing Cashman ever made in the history of the world. Maybe it’s not. Either way, I’m rooting for AP as hard as you. I don’t see why I’m at the brunt of your sarcasm.

  17. Dorian says:

Girardi: “Hey Phil don’t worry about not pitching in 10 days. All you have to do is get me out of a 2 on no out jam with Pedroia, Youkilis, and Bay comin up. That’s all.”

  18. Al D says:

What I don’t understand is all the people screaming for Phil when he’s wildly inconsistent. Meanwhile, Andy has a strong 6th.

  19. Dorian says:

How do I apply for membership in the Andy Pettite fan club?

  20. John Duci says:

There going to send Hughes down in a few days when Bruney is ready to comeback. I dont think were going to use him anymore untill its time to call him back up.

  21. Luis Polonia says:

Yeah I thought things were going to unravel but he did a good job regrouping after that bad inning. Gotta give credit there.

  22. yanke1313 says:

    hughes!!!!!

  23. BklynJT says:

    phucking-finally.

  24. Bryan V says:

I was surprised to see all the reliever talk. It’s not like Andy has been terrible.

  25. yanke1313 says:

    i cant wait!!!

  26. Dorian says:

Girardi listens to the RAB Nation. He has a laptop in the dugout.

  27. Thomas says:

    College baseball at its finest.

  28. Riddering says:

    HUGHES LIVES!

  29. pat says:

We’ve been smacking the shiznit out of the ball, just right at people. Major bummer yall.

  30. John says:

    ok offense wake up

  31. Thomas says:

    DAMON!!!!

  32. Mike Axisa says:

    A Damon Dinger!!!

  33. Chris A says:

How come Melancon isn’t in the Majors? He can’t be any worse than Veras. I’m just wondering.

  34. Drew says:

WHat can ya say about JD? He’s the friggin man. Let’s get AP the W and go home boys.

  35. BigBlueAL says:

You hang em’ Damon bangs em’.

  36. And, now, Andy Pettitte is in line for the win.

    BOOYAH.

  37. Bryan V says:

This ump kills me with those slow, lazy, strike calls.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Its Tim Meclelland (pardon the spelling) he is famous for that. No game was more nerve-racking with his slow calls than Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS.

  38. John says:

    I live JD

  39. gxpanos says:

    WHOOOOOO!!

Johnny D having a hell of a year this year.

  40. John Duci says:

Damon looked like he though it was a pop-up. BANDBOX!!!!

  41. Charlie says:

    i fucking love johnny damon

  42. V says:

I dunno, that Posada walkoff against the Angels was something else – that game was OVER, then Fuentes came out tossing 89 mph meatballs.

  43. V says:

Damon’s was the only ‘cheap’ homerun.

  44. pat says:

Ugh, Arod pads his OBP stats.

  45. Bryan V says:

Did anybody see the chat with the COO of MLB at ESPN.com? Saying that MLB rules on dimensions of new stadiums effected how close the Yankees could make the dimensions at new Yankee Stadium.

    • John says:

he said that Yankee stadium was a special case because we wanted to replicate the historic old Stadium

      • Bryan V says:

        Bumpy (NYC)
with all the HR’s being hit at the new yankee stadium (100 so far this year), is there any talk of new stadiums in the future having specific minimum distances from home plate?

        BOB DUPUY
We do have minimum dimensions at new ballparks. Due to the uniqueness of Yankee Stadium, there was an attempt to replicate it, but there are standards in place.

They did what they can, but it’s clear that the MLB rules did effect it, as the Stadium is not exactly like old Yankee Stadium.

  46. Nate says:

    “The Arson Squad”
    +1 to Kay.

  47. V says:

Man, Alex really is not running well.

  48. Jay says:

How long til A-Rod is right, realistically??

    All star break?

  49. Charlie says:

lets see how phillip does here

  50. John says:

Just checked on Gameday, that Tex strike 3 call was a ball

  51. Drew says:

    The ghost of philly?

  52. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Not you too Cone!

    • John says:

what he say? is he a B-hoser?

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

Not exactly. He said it’s great Hughes is going to help the Yankees in the bullpen but they shouldn’t put him as a starter. But Hughes to the bullpen is most likely temporary and he’ll be helping more as a starter.

  53. yanke1313 says:

    94 mph

  54. e mills says:

    96 mph????

  55. Luis Polonia says:

Coke is up in the pen:

6 of the scariest words for Yankee fans in 2009.

  56. ryan w says:

i guess he can pump it up out of the pen. still think he and wanger should switch back

  57. pc69 says:

    96 fastball, 77 curve… fucking wicked

  58. Luis Polonia says:

I haven’t been to the new stadium, but it doesn’t seem like they play any music during at-bats…no organ, no “charge”, no slow claps, etc. Is this accurate? I feel like this could be a part of why it always seems so quiet.

  59. YankeeScribe says:

    NASTY!!!!

  60. Mike Axisa says:

Longoria will have nightmares about that.

  61. Jay says:

    Boy o boy…
    I like Hughes..
    Like more than a friend.

  62. The Artist says:

    THE B-HUGHES-ERS!!!!!

  63. PHIL HUGHES IS A MAN!!!! HE’S 22!!!!!

  64. BigBlueAL says:

Shit, Hughes was nasty as fuck that inning!!!!

    • Yankee1010 says:

It’s funny what guys with pretty legit stuff can do when they only have to pitch an inning or two.

  65. pat says:

    Total
    Domination.

  66. Dorian says:

    Phil to teh 8th

  67. pc69 says:

and THAT is why he needs to be in the rotation. PHughes might finally be turning the corner.

  68. Yankee1010 says:

And there it is. How long before Fatcessa starts screaming, “HUGHES IN THE 7TH AND JOBA IN THE 8TH!!!”

  69. Nick L says:

    Just got some chills

  70. yanke1313 says:

ive just been blown away by phils sheer greatness

  71. putt says:

    That was great to see.

  72. BklynJT says:

Hughes just got himself a new fanboy… Mike’d up!

  73. pat says:

F*ck it, lets go oldschool on this bitch. Phranchise for the 3 inning save….

    -pat

    • Zach says:

but does 3 innings rule him out for Wednesday’s game?

      • pat says:

Ima be an optimist and say we won’t need him. But you’re right that could preclude him from pitching incase cmw gets roughed up.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Considering Mo has pitched the last 2 days in a row I wouldnt mind seeing Hughes finish this game if possible.

  74. Jake H says:

I’m loving tomorrow. The draft and Yanks vs Sox.

  75. pat says:

Oh man, McLouth going yard against the pirates must hurt sooooooo bad.

  76. The Artist says:

If Girardi lets him finish the game out, then he keeps him stretched out (3 innings) and gets valuable innings out of one of their best arms.

Who needs a bridge to Mo? This is pre-1970′s bullpen use.

  77. Accent Shallow says:

So is Hughes coming out for the 8th? Or did they just want to get him an inning so he’s fresh to back up Wang in the Fens?

  78. John says:

okay, let’s add some insurance runs (like 5) and get Hughes the save

  79. cjc says:

hey look a gb to second

  80. Charlie says:

    matsui kinda sucks

  81. John says:

man, we have had some hard hit balls that were caught

  82. Yankees_Universe says:

Can Kay just stop acting like that little kid in the park who gets up from the seat on every fly ball to the outfield thinking it is a HR?

  83. Luis Polonia says:

Who else wants some more social commentary from Boomer?

  84. A.D. says:

    The B-Hughesers are rallying

  85. Ladies, ladies, ladies! Jay and Silent Bob are in the hizzouuuuuuse!

  86. gxpanos says:

Shut up shut up shut up, Kay! Hughes is not an “unexpected weapon” out of the BP. Is it shocking that a guy with two plus pitches can dominate in an inning? And, sure, he’s a weapon, but more like a pocket knife as opposed to starter Hughes, who’s a pretty high quality pistol or something. With the potential to be a shotgun.

  87. pat says:

Holy schneikes I’m uber suprised kay and cone didn’t mention it was Andy v Andy tonite.

Unless they did and I missed it.

  88. For everyone above who was saying “Veras warming up in the pen” is the 6 scariest words a Yankee fan can hear:

Why is Veras the target of your ire and not Edwar Ramirez? I seriously want to know. Edwar has been WAY, WAY less effective than Veras and all the other Yankee pitchers in 2009 BY FAR, and yet Veras constantly got shit on this year much more than Edwar did.

I never understood that phenomenon. Why do you hate Veras worse than Edwar?

    • Zach says:

Ramirez isnt in the bullpen anymore?

    • Jackson says:

Probably the same reason everyone went apeshit when Pettitte had one bad inning tonight. Which is to say, I have no idea.

    • yanke1313 says:

veras’ era is about a run and a half higher than edwar’s

    • Drew says:

Personally I love Edwar. Veras has never been on my good side so he doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt.
At the same time, calling either of them effective so far THIS YEAR makes no sense.

    • Luis Polonia says:

Both have been awful…trust me, if Ramirez was still in the bigs and he was warming in the pen, those would be six scary words.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Ramirez is in AAA now. Simple as that for me at least. They both suck.

  89. riirtiot says:

So is Matsui or Swisher going to sit against NL teams?

  90. Zach says:

    Swisher heating up again

  91. A.D. says:

    WTF why only 1 inning?

  92. Mike Axisa says:

Look out, Girardi’s managing again. Fuck.

    • JS says:

Hey Girardi, come on, stop with the “cerebral” lefty-righty jazz and go with the more basic “who’s grooving” (Hughes) and who isn’t (Coke)

  93. BigBlueAL says:

    WTF Coke is in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????

  94. ryan w says:

why the f*ck would they take hughes out after that inning?

    • Luis Polonia says:

Is it possible that Girardi has more faith in Coke than Coke’s parents? I don’t know that Coke is as bad as he seems sometimes, but Joe absolutely loves him.

  95. Bryan V says:

Veras has a ton of potential. If he can get back the control he had last season, he’ll be a very valuable weapon out of the ‘pen. Giving up on him, and going as far as saying the Yankees should release him (as he has no options to simply be sent down) is ridiculous.

  96. YankeeScribe says:

    Just one inning for Hughes?

  97. Well that was a fuckin’ waste. If this is how they continue to use Hughes out of the ‘pen, I’m going to be even more upset. I’m annoyed he’s there in the first place, but it’d be much better if he were used as Aceves is used.

    • Zach says:

If he goes 2 innings, can he be used for 3+ on Wednesday after Wang?

    • Accent Shallow says:

I would imagine that they want Hughes to shadow Wang in Fenway, and this was to get him some in-game work prior.

Should Wang falter (I hope not), we should see Hughes go multiple innings. If Wang does falter and we don’t see Hughes, then he should be in Scranton. No way should he be used as a typical setup man.

    • Evan says:

The only reason I can think of using him for one inning is that he wants him to back up Wang on Wednesday. If not, then, I’m with you on being perplexed.

  98. Dorian says:

WOW what a gem by Kay huh?

Yankees having their “Phil” of relief?

  99. John says:

okay Cokey, get through this inning and we’re good

  100. Yankee1010 says:

Did Hughes die while in the dugout between the bottom of the 7th and the top of the 8th? Otherwise, there isn’t a good reason Coke is in there.

  101. pat says:

    Girardi has a coke problem.

  102. e mills says:

umm didn’t Pena crush Coke earlier this season?

    • e mills says:

good job there…the big lefties seem to always be looking slider to crush and Coke goes w/ the fastball…I like it

  103. Thomas says:

“If you’re a Yankees fan, you hope he is Phil Coke Zero.”

    Chris Berman speaking => Facepalm

  104. BklynJT says:

WTF, why is hughes out after 1 inning!?!

  105. jsbrendog says:

maybe theyre still scared about wang and just getting hughes an inning so he can go after wng at fenway?

  106. Your guess is as good as mine as to why Phil didn’t go longer.

  107. MattG says:

    Stupid overmanaging

  108. V says:

Coke hasn’t thrown a strike in the inning.

  109. ryan w says:

what’s wang’s leash before they flip him back to the pen? two more 5 run outings? 3? 1? i want hughes back in the rotation

  110. cjc says:

oh good 4 pitch walk awesome they never hurt late in games

  111. Reggie C. says:

Zobrist walks on 4 pitches …..

  112. Jackson says:

I could be completely wrong here, but perhaps Girardi is thinking that after an 11 pitch inning they can use Hughes to throw 3 or 4 on Wednesday if Wang implodes. Or he’s overmanaging again.

    • BigBlueAL says:

Sure lets use Hughes on Wed basically in mop-up duty instead of making sure they actually win this game.

      • Jackson says:

Well I personally have complete faith that using Coke and Rivera will be just as effective in winning the game as leaving Hughes in

      • Zach says:

Wednesday isnt necessarily mop-op duty for Hughes. Wang has a pitch limit and we’re facing Wakefield.

Coke got the job done, Mo for the 9th

    • That’s the only way it makes sense.

The only logical reason to pull Phil Hughes after an inning is that you’ve handcuffed him to Wang’s schedule and only gave him an inning here to keep him fresh.

  113. BigBlueAL says:

If Coke blows this game, Girardi better not read this blog….

  114. V says:

He’s up to a total of one strike thrown in the inning.

    • Zach says:

who cares? if he throws a slider that breaks out of the zone and someone swings at it then GOOD, better then leaving a slider up and seeing it get hammered

      • V says:

He threw 9 straight fastballs high and outside.

        • V says:

          8. Ball 4 was low and inside. But still a fastball.

          • Zach says:

and he pitched a scoreless inning, i dont care how he gets there, just care about the 0 he threw up

            • JobaWockeeZ says:

Apparently the thought of that 0 is irrelevant.

            • MattG says:

You should care how he gets there. Would you send the blind squirrel out to gather your nuts?

              • Zach says:

                1 IP, 1 BB, 1 K.

that’s how he got there; if any other pitcher threw balls out of the zone and got outs we’d say how sick his stuff was and how the batters couldnt pitch up his arm slot.

            • V says:

You really don’t care how he got there? In the long run?

You feel perfectly fine going to a guy in the bullpen who throws no strikes just because he happened to get a zero? Heck, even Igawa got zeroes from time to time.

      • MattG says:

I care. Hughes got misses on pitches in the strike zone. That’s impressive.

  115. Luis Polonia says:

The Wave? In the 8th inning of a division game? Please tell me that I didn’t see that.

  116. A.D. says:

Well at least Coke got it done.

  117. usty says:

    WTF? Over-manage.

  118. V says:

Man, Teixeira makes all of the infielders a lot better. That was a mediocre throw by Jeter, but Teix got it easily.

  119. A.D. says:

So is it Mo tonight, or D-Rob in the 9th given he was warming.

  120. JobaWockeeZ says:

With this much hate you’d think Coke gave up the lead and gave up 10000000 runs.

    • BigBlueAL says:

I dont think its hate towards Coke, although I am not his biggest fan he is certainly one of the better options out of the pen, its more hate to the way they used Hughes tonight.

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

It wasn’t at Coke, you’re right bu hate for Joe G’s over managing, the hate of Phil not being there but there was some hate towards Coke for performing “badly.”

  121. A.D. says:

    Nice insurance.

  122. pat says:

    jeetjeetjeet

  123. Drew says:

  124. gxpanos says:

  125. jsbrendog says:

    bandbox ahahahahahahahahaha

  126. A.D. says:

Looks like the Yankees saw the pace had fallen on the MLB.com Yankee Stadium HR tracker and wanted to kick it back up a notch.

  127. DEREK JETER IS A MAN!!!! HE’S ALMOST 40!!!!!

  128. gxpanos says:

Is that one considered a BANDBOX cheapie? Probably not, right?

  129. Jon says:

I still think Joe should have left Hughes in for the 8th, it’s not like he didn’t have the stuff or the endurance. Coke always makes me worry.

  130. Dave says:

I shudder to think about those of you watching ESPN in this HR barrage.

    • jsbrendog says:

i worry that espn would be better than kay tonight. about 5 or more times in the past THREE INNINGS ive wanted to jump through the tvand beat his ass

      • Luis Polonia says:

One day Bill James will come up with some sort of stat that measures the “Berman Factor,” which indicates how much a particular broadcaster can influence one’s enjoyment of the game. Until that day, we may never know who sucks more.

  131. John says:

Aite!!! I was hoping we’d get one more here

  132. John says:

Our 1-3 hitters have one hit each…a HR

  133. yanke1313 says:

    choate= too close to choad

  134. Um, did Randy Choate just steal Papelfuck’s little head turn towards the mound? Or did Papelfuck steal it from Choate?

And didn’t that Red Sox experiment fail because their committee guys sucked, not because of the approach?

    • A.D. says:

Usually closer by committee fails because none of the guys are good enough to close. In the late 90′s the Reds had a healthy Danny Graves & Scott Williamson, who were completely abused, but used as a nice dual closer which worked well.

      • A.D. says:

Graves, Williamson, and Sullivan combined for over 300 innings in one year out of the pen for the ’99 Reds….yikes.

  135. Jackson says:

I appreciate Berman bringing up game 6 of the 2001 WS. That was a good memory.

  136. Reggie C. says:

Time for Arod to stat pad.

  137. Drew says:

This game has gone by fast.

  138. yanke1313 says:

    time for a new thread

  139. HOLY CRAP I THINK JASON ISRINGHAUSEN ATE BILL PULSIPHER AND PAUL WILSON.

  140. Izzy got BIG, no?

  141. Drew says:

    lol at Boo’s…

  142. gxpanos says:

Aaaaaand Michael Kay bringing up the Red Sox’s 2003 BP again.

How were Brandon Lyon, Chad Fox, Alan Embree, and BK Kim going to save games? It didnt matter what kind of BP they had.

(Am I forgetting any awful arms from that ridiculously bad BP?)
