Save = overrated stat
We’re using Mo for the 3rd straight day and though he will be as effective as ever, I’d prefer resting him. I mean Phil Coke for another inning will not kill us.
Yeah he is the best one. But its only 3 more outs. Phil Coke could easily do that but whatever it already happened. My opinion on this matter means nothing.
Why save Hughes if you aren’t going to save Mo? Wang MIGHT not stink Wednesday, but Hughes is limited to 1IP when he’s clearly dealing. He could have easily gone at least 2 if not all 3. This does not make sense to me.
Oh my God. Phil and Phil the players of the game? Really? Why do media guys love BP guys so much? This is getting ridiculous. Swisher and Pettitte deserve it more.
Aaaaaand Michael Kay bringing up the Red Sox’s 2003 BP again.
How were Brandon Lyon, Chad Fox, Alan Embree, and BK Kim going to save games? It didnt matter what kind of BP they had.
(Am I forgetting any awful arms from that ridiculously bad BP?)
Yes. You’re forgetting:
Craptastic Mike Timlin
Legally Dead Ramiro Mendoza
84MPH Four-Seamer Todd Jones
Midseason Non-Savior Scott Williamson
Rudy “I look and pitch like Sidney Ponson” Seanez
Utterly Nondescript Bobby Howry
Funny thing is that bullpen dominated the Yankees in the playoffs yet Grady Little’s non-confidence in them cost him his job and probably the Red Sox a WS.
Speaking of this “if your life depended on it” game, Skip Bayless (cock) was saying he wouldn’t want Roy Halladay to pitch the game of his life because Halladay hasn’t done it in the playoffs.
Ways to become “feared” by the MSM
1) Be a big black guy in Boston
2) Have a sweet porn moustache and a rugged, all-American name like “Jack”
3) Not play for the Yankees
Yea, terrible. It was real dumb on the Rays part. A guy with his stuff that seemed to be putting it together last year is not a guy you look to trade. If they were going to trade a starter it was clear it should’ve been Sonnastine. He had a slightly better year, but his stuff isn’t nearly as good as Jackson.
Bad move by the Rays, but that’s definitely ok by me.
Hide the children tomorrow. It’s going to be a raucous affair. I shutter to think what may come out of my mouth when I see Beckett’s little douche soul patch.
Hopefully the offense can heat up for the Boston series. 6 hits tonight against the mediocre pitching of the Rays (though 4 of those were HRs )…. And they will definetly need some offense in support of Wang on Wednesday.
Hopefully the offense can heat up for the Boston series. 6 hits tonight against the mediocre pitching of the Rays (though 4 of those were HRs )…. And they will definetly need some offense in support of Wang on Wednesday.
Considering that Jose Veras has made 23 appearances this year and the April 12th loss to the Royals is the only game where he entered with a lead and the Yankees lost the lead that inning, I’d say that statement is most likely quite false.
I want all our hitters in the cage, concentrating on hitting it right back up the box. We play in a DH league so we can’t throw at his head… let’s hit the ball at his head.
Cone is really going overboard with the “Hughes is increasing his versatility by being able to start or relieve.
Hughes pitched a full inning. He didn’t enter an inning with runners on base. He wasn’t used as a situational reliever, he was used as a starter but only threw one frame.
Hey, Chris Singleton: Your tie should touch your belt buckle. You look like a thin Willy Loman with that ridiculously short necktie. Put your jacket back on and stop embarrassing yourself.
That’s all I can figure. They were talking about how fast he gets around the bags. I think it was Berthiaume, he said, “we haven’t seen anyone run like this since Deon Sanders” and Kruk agreed.
Also, Jacoby isn’t as flashy as Mccutchen. Mr. Ellsbury holds himself to a higher standard and does not allow his abilities to outshine the team. He’s truly a gritty, clutch performer, a true American.
Does anyone else realize that our bullpen could be a major strength come the second half of the year? Think about it: Mo will be Mo, Aceves will keep mowing em down, Coke might give up a few less homers and be more reliable, Robertson will keep pumpin strikes, Bruney & Marte will get healthy and be dominant in their roles, and maybe Melancon will be up here and carry his success over to the majors. THAT’s what i call a bullpen.
We only need 7 spots to be filled, and we have the following to choose from:
Mo – no comment necessary
Bruney – dynamite when healthy
Marte – dynamite when healthy
Aceves – has been one of the 5-10 best relievers in all of baseball this year
Coke – a quality lefty who’s recovering nicely from his early struggles
Robertson – 208 ERA+, 11.4 K/9 so far; 5.2 H/9 rate is Mariano-ish
Melancon – still a top 100 prospect with closer potential, already cracked the big leagues, likely to stay longer when he comes back
Tomko – Don’t laugh, he’s actually been good in his SSS
Claggett – Still a quality arm
Veras, Edwar, Albaladejo – chances are, one of these three straightens himself out and pitches well in the second half
Romulo Sanchez – 11.0 K/9 in AAA this year
Wilkins De La Rosa, Mike Dunn, and Chris Garcia – all on the 40 man already and thus, prime candidates to be fast tracked as they continue their great 2009 seasons
Hopefully no stomach flu today.
Chahhlie Murphayy
Phil Hughes and Phil Coke = players of the game?
Who gets it tomorrow, the bat boy that plays catch with the right fielder in between innings?
With all the solo HR’s, I’d give it to the guy who had the 2 run shot.
I’d give it to Andy Pettitte, just to piss people off
+46
lmao, i was wondering about that too
Alex is grounding to 3rd a lot…maybe he just wants to learn more about fielding 3rd by watching other 3Bs field those balls.
I wonder if A-Rod will be 100% this year.
Why would they replace swisher and not damon for defense?
Damon is actually a very good in LF.
And hes got a cannon.
plus a tremendous singing voice.
Between Damon, Gardner and Swisher the Yankees have one of the weakest throwing OF in baseball. Thats with Melky and his cannon included too.
Catching the ball >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Throwing the ball
true, but its nice to have strong armed outfielders also
more like, the grittiest outfield
Two outs before I could post this, doesn’t matter I guess.
They can only replace 1 given the bench, and Damon is probably the better defender.
I still have a glow from that Hughes performance.
I think I’m in love.
Why Mo? We’re going to need him against the Sox and maybe the Mets.
W.
Well we could have won and not used him but whatever. Ideally Phil Hughes would have been best.
no because then Hughes isnt available for Wang on wednesday
Tomko or Aceves could be used.
True. Gotta play for today though. Hopefully Mo won’t be missed tomorrow.
because he’s out closer and its a save situation
Save = overrated stat
We’re using Mo for the 3rd straight day and though he will be as effective as ever, I’d prefer resting him. I mean Phil Coke for another inning will not kill us.
Ok fine save is overrated. 2 run game and hes the best arm in the pen
Yeah he is the best one. But its only 3 more outs. Phil Coke could easily do that but whatever it already happened. My opinion on this matter means nothing.
Win = Least underrated stat
Got to play for today. No idea what happens tomorrow.
Got to play for today. No idea what happens tomorrow.
No. Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. You’re constantly playing for both today AND tomorrow.
They need him in this game right now. No point in saving him for a situations against the Sox or Mets that might never come.
very true , very true
Why save Hughes if you aren’t going to save Mo? Wang MIGHT not stink Wednesday, but Hughes is limited to 1IP when he’s clearly dealing. He could have easily gone at least 2 if not all 3. This does not make sense to me.
Oh my God. Phil and Phil the players of the game? Really? Why do media guys love BP guys so much? This is getting ridiculous. Swisher and Pettitte deserve it more.
maybe Damon’s tie breaking HR
Only downside here is Mo working for the 3rd straight day. Cant imagine he will be available tomorrow.
We won’t need the save. Beckett will get smashed.
That one.
7 IP from Burnett + 1 IP from Veras (with a 5 run lead) + 1 IP from Tomko (with a 9 run lead) = victory
Guess they’ll just have to blow the Sox out tomorrow.
Yeah, but can’t expect that they will be in this position tommorrow.
If Girardi is right and he’s still building up arm strength, then give him some work.
Its fucking June, he shouldn’t still be working getting into shape. Unless the surgery set him way back this off season, which is very possible.
It doesnt matter how good of shape your arm is in no reliever is asked to work 4 days in a row during the regular season.
Yes. You’re forgetting:
Craptastic Mike Timlin
Legally Dead Ramiro Mendoza
84MPH Four-Seamer Todd Jones
Midseason Non-Savior Scott Williamson
Rudy “I look and pitch like Sidney Ponson” Seanez
Utterly Nondescript Bobby Howry
Funny thing is that bullpen dominated the Yankees in the playoffs yet Grady Little’s non-confidence in them cost him his job and probably the Red Sox a WS.
Pedro did whatever he wanted on that team. All Grady did was listen to the best pitcher on the planet.
Just another irrational Boston overreaction to a loss, fed by their disgracefully knee-jerk media.
Just another irrational Boston overreaction to a loss, fed by their disgracefully knee-jerk media.
Exactly.
(looks around at current irrational Yankee fanbase and knee-jerk NYC media and shudders in fear)
We would NEVER do anything like that in sophisticated, erudite New York City.
N-E-V-E-R.
Jesus, you’re right. Rudy Seanez and Todd Jones!
And here we are, complaining about our BP.
Speaking of this “if your life depended on it” game, Skip Bayless (cock) was saying he wouldn’t want Roy Halladay to pitch the game of his life because Halladay hasn’t done it in the playoffs.
CC has a 7.92 postseason ERA so a lot of people wouldnt pick him for that fact
Those people have something in common.
They’re all dumbasses.
Bayless is just a contrarian who’s not worth paying attention to. He’ll always take the minority position solely so he has something to talk about.
It was, IMO, reason #545 why Skip Bayless is a cock.
Didn’t he pick Beckett?
I’d rather have Jack Morris right now than Halladay, Jack Morris is big game.
Jack Morris pitches to the score. And that’s a good thing and means he’s a good pitcher and a HoF candidate.
Sincerely,
Every numbnuts at ESPN not named Neyer, Gammons, Caple, and Law
I still don’t get why people think he’s a better HOF candidate than Blyleven.
Wait…was Morris feared…?
Wait…was Morris feared…?
Yes.

Ahhhh yes, another reference to Hall of Famer Jim Rice
Jim Rice, Career (1974-1989):
9058 PA’s, .298/.352/.502 (128+), 77 intentional walks
Ken Singleton, Career (1970-1984):
8558 PA’s, 282/.388/.436 (132+), 125 intentional walks
My announcer >>>>>>>>>> Your “Hall of Famer”
Matt Joyce for Edwin Jackson, how bad is that trade looking
For who?
tbay I would think…
Why? Joyce has hardly played and still has an .833 OPS
Yeah and edwin jackson is 6-3 with a 2.16 era and .984 WHIP.
Matt Joyce has 30AB’s
Yeah, but I hear Joyce smells nice.
Touche Arman, touche.
for Tampa
Won’t know for a few years – Joyce could pan out.
MO!
Weird, Mo doesn’t look finished
Yay Mo! Yay win!
God, Mo is good.
*Mo, Mo is good?
Nobody in the entire universe can lay off the high cheeze no matter who you are or what level you’re playing at.
GIVE HIM THE HIGH, STINKY CHEDDAR!
but i like the high ones
4-2 on the homestand. Love it. Bring the hotness up to Boston, baby!
i haven’t felt this good about going to boston in a long long time
Mo dominated Upton there!!
7th K against Upton for Mo!
No errors tomorrow! Let’s get another errorless streak going.
1 game lead over the Sox! And TB, get y’all’s asses below .500
Wow Chris Berman. Andy Pettite with his “221st save”. Wow that must make him a HOF lock. (What a moron)
Hide the children tomorrow. It’s going to be a raucous affair. I shutter to think what may come out of my mouth when I see Beckett’s little douche soul patch.

Yeah but if you look at the outs we were making very solid contact, just hittin em right at people. it happens still a good game.
Hopefully the offense can heat up for the Boston series. 6 hits tonight against the mediocre pitching of the Rays (though 4 of those were HRs )…. And they will definetly need some offense in support of Wang on Wednesday.
Hm, weird. TBay is +47 RD, better than both the Yanks and Sox.
Oh nice, Boston had an off-day, at home no less, while the Yankees play a night game.
Eh it’s not like we were down in florida. Not ideal, but certainly not too bad.
OMG Chris Singleton just said on BBTN that when Gabe Kaplar gets hot “he can carry a ballclub.” HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
That is so Dorian.
Not ONE update from that lazy asshole Ernie.
Rivera threw 11 pitches tonight, 10 pitches on Sunday and 21 on Saturday.
Two quick outings in a row, but I think he gets tomorrow off.
Tuesday’s battle plan:
7 strong from Burnett
1 from Aceves
Hughes to close it out.
I like my plan better.

No lead is safe from Veras.

nope, it’s true. He tries his best to give up leads, but sometimes he is yanked before he gets the chance.
You = emotional hyperbole
Me = dispassionate accuracy
I smell a sitcom!
Coming up next on FOX, Cross-Armed Opposites!
Not the whole game–just the first 8 innings.
Wasn’t it 31?
huh, gameday and BR say 21 on saturday. I could have sworn it was more.
Knocking the shit out of beckett tomorrow would be fucking dope.
Having him curl up in a ball on the mound, sucking his thumb and screaming for his Mommy would be even better.
I want all our hitters in the cage, concentrating on hitting it right back up the box. We play in a DH league so we can’t throw at his head… let’s hit the ball at his head.
Douchebag.
So much talk about the Red Sock bullpen. Straw Poll: Whom do you fear out of the Red Sock bullpen?
All I fear is a hearty fistpump.
fuck that j o

Hughes was fucking beautiful tonight and YOU KNOW IT!
Hey, Chris Singleton: Your tie should touch your belt buckle. You look like a thin Willy Loman with that ridiculously short necktie. Put your jacket back on and stop embarrassing yourself.
HES CLIMBIN UR FAKE BRICK WALLZ STEALIN UR HOMERZZ
Hey, Chris Singleton: Where did you get that suit? At the…toilet…store?
Chris Singleton looks like a blueberry.
+5
Hey, look . . . uhhh . . . some guys have never figured out the whole necktie thing, OK? Doesn’t make you a bad person.
u mean ken? or the son?
Chris Singleton the BBTN “analyst”.
For future reference, everything Ken Singleton does is awesome–except being a B-Jobber.
OMG an Arthur Miller reference. You know, Willy Loman is only 5 degrees from Brett Gardner.
Heh.
ESPN seems to have added number of pitch’s seen as well as OBP to their box scores, is this new?
Yes – They just started with the additional stats this past week.
yeah, looks pretty good
Reverse “Joba” for Hughes? He looks so good in one inning appearances that everyone wants him in the eigth?
How is that a “reverse” Joba?
Reason number 533482 that All-Star Game voting is stupid: Jimmy Rollins is the leading vote getter for SS.
NL SS, wOBA (qualifiers):
Hanley Ramirez – .406
Miguel Tejada – .389
Yunel Escobar – .354
Ryan Theriot – .351
Cristian Guzman – .300
Troy Tulowitzki – .298
Edgar Renteria – .286
Rafael Furcal – .279
Jimmy Rollins – .259
You mean…for the first time in years, Miguel Tejada would be a legitimate All-Star pick…and he’s not going to be?
Ha!
AL DH, wOBA (qualifiers):
Adam Lind – .388
Jim Thome – .374
Jason Kubel – .367
Hank Blalock – .350
Hideki Matsui – .350
Jason Giambi – .337
Mike Jacobs – .335
Jack Cust – .335
Magglio Ordonez – .329
(big gap)
David Ortiz – .266
I’m torn. Francesa thinks Joba is a reliever but also thinks that Phil can’t hack it out of the bullpen. I mean can someone tell me when he is right?
He once called Andy Pettitte a starting pitcher. That my friend, is one hundred percent accurate.
Never.
I mean can someone tell me when he is right?
Yes. It happened in 1987. He said that Lawrence Taylor is “good”.
21-0 when we allow 3 runs or less.
Lol at BBTN comparing Andrew Mccutchen to Deon.
Solely because they’re both fast and black?
Seriously, why?
That’s all I can figure. They were talking about how fast he gets around the bags. I think it was Berthiaume, he said, “we haven’t seen anyone run like this since Deon Sanders” and Kruk agreed.
But what about Tacoby?!?!
HE STOLE HOME!!!!
They were gonna compare his speed to Jacoby Ellsbury, but that’s crazy… nobody’s THAT fast. Or awesome.
Also, Jacoby isn’t as flashy as Mccutchen. Mr. Ellsbury holds himself to a higher standard and does not allow his abilities to outshine the team. He’s truly a gritty, clutch performer, a true American.
“There’s an ‘I’ in Deion Sanders”

I’m very aroused.
nice
Rules question: what happens if the pitcher steps off the rubber and throws home? Can the batter hit it? What happens if the batter does hit it?
Wouldn’t that be some type of interference? If he steps off the rubber, it wouldn’t be a hittable ball.
Yeah, I’m 99.9% sure that’s not an actual pitch.
First time at the new stadium…absolutely beautiful. Pretty good game all around. Didn’t hear many boos on A-rod’s error.
