  1. Jobamania says:

    this fuckin’ guy

  2. gxpanos says:

    Amen to that. Johan who?

This makes up for the Nieve start and then some.

  3. Ivan says:

You still think that Johan was saved by not going to the AL, especially going to the AL East.

  4. Zach says:

Who wants to bet that Francesa ignores AJ, Andy and Johan tomorrow and talks about Joba as a 4 inning pitcher for 6hours tomorrow?

    • Ivan says:

Nobody gives a fuck about good stuff, America loves controversy.

    • AJ says:

Wouldn’t it be great if we could get a NY-area wide restraining order on Francesca. That way, he’d never be able to speak on a radio station again.

  5. A says:

The Mets should trade Santana asap for Zach Duke

    Mike Francesa

  6. Dela G says:

NA NA NA NA, NA NA NA NA, HEY HEY HEY, GOOODBYE! [/waves]

  7. Mike Axisa says:

Man, the Yanks used to annihilate Stokes when he was with Tampa.

  8. ARX says:

Absolutely unreal…roll over like dogs by an emergency scrub, then turn around and blow Santana away.

  9. Ivan says:

It’s just keep getting better and better.

  10. Matt-Pitt says:

Mets should move him to the 8th. He clearly can’t last 5 innings. Johan Santana is not a starting pitcher.

  11. ARX says:

Who was it that called for a good ol’ fashioned beatdown? Day late but you’re getting your wish!

  12. Jobamania says:

    Medlen bailed out Lowe.

    Lowe’s final line

    2.1 IP
    8 hits
    7 earned runs
    3 BB
    0 strikeouts
    1 homerun

Please, anyone that thinks we should have signed Lowe in the AL east, raise your hand

    • Accent Shallow says:

Do you really think that one bad start proves the guy can’t hack it? Or that he’d pitch like that all year in the AL or this division?

I agree that not signing him was a good move, but you’re selling his talents short.

    • Dela G says:

      haha

    • Ivan says:

It’s just a start but it comes to show ya when u see guys like Lowe and Santana that pitching in the AL especially in the AL East is a different animal.

    • Cy Farnsworth says:

I would’ve thought that Lowe’s 8 years in Boston established that he can hack it in this division.

Everyone gets knocked around every so often–even Johan.

      • Jobamania says:

asides from 1 good year(2002), lowe was average at best as a starter in the AL east.

        plus he’s even older now

        • Cy Farnsworth says:

It’s certainly true that he’s gotten older, and the division is tougher offensively than it was in the early part of the decade. And I didn’t advocate signing Lowe at any point during this offseason.

But let’s not sell the guy too short here, he did win 80 and save 80 during his time in Boston IIRC, he was a very nice pitcher.

  13. Jobamania says:

thinks going real bad for the mets right now

  14. John says:

cmon bring home jeter to make Johan have allowed 9 ERs for the day

  15. Mike Axisa says:

I love games like this, when other team gets Murphy Law’d

  16. Dave says:

Wow what an offensive explosion. Hope AJ doesnt suffer from another long inning.

    • AndrewYF says:

Hopefully he doesn’t throw another pitch out of the strike zone all game.

He’d probably end up with 15 Ks.

  17. JobaWockeeZ says:

Veras gets to pitch again today.

  18. ARX says:

    Er….ok…

  19. Zach says:

Johan’s ERA went up .79 today

  20. Accent Shallow says:

So is that DP from Alex unclutch because the bases were loaded, or meaningless since the Yankees were up 8?

    • A says:

He wanted to be the first yankee in years to induce a triple play…..he’s a selfish stat padder!

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Oh yeah yesterday about the A-Rod RISP stats. Yeah you were right. I think the MLB page did it only when he was a Yankee.

  21. Ivan says:

Do you know how ticked off the Met fan is?

Ur might lose this series to the yanks by a drop ball, and ur best pitcher on the mound getting lit up like a Rockerfeller christmas tree.

  22. Jobamania says:

    CANO BOMB. HELL YEAH

WELCOME TO THE AL EAST STOKES

  23. Zach says:

    CANOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  24. Accent Shallow says:

This Cano fella is padding his stats.

  25. ARX says:

So. THATS why Cano is batting 5th…

  26. claybeez says:

    Robbie!

  27. Dela G says:

    WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

    ROBBIE CANO WITH THE BOMB!!!

  28. Yankees_Universe says:

    Don’t ya know…Robbie Cano..

  29. Ivan says:

Just pour it on baby, just pour it on.

  30. JobaWockeeZ says:

    teh bandbox11!!

  31. Luthien says:

Wow. What a time for MLB.TV to crap out and tell me the game is “temporarily unavailable”.

  32. handtius says:

Just stopping in. Just wanted to ask where are all those people who wanted to trade Hughes away for Santana are? Mr. Lombardi?

    and…

    CANO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • ARX says:

I’m still to this day not sure what the real package was supposed to be for Santana, I’ve heard so many variations

      • handtius says:

Don’t care. I wouldn’t have given up a low-A player for Santana because he wanted that 7 year deal… I’d rather have CC.

        • Accent Shallow says:

          Whoa, whoa, whoa.

I would absolutely have given up a garbage package of low minors players for Santana. Santana is sorta awesome.

      • Whozat says:

Anything that sounds too good to be true was probably false.

  33. AJ says:

This is great. This just went from a game to stat day. Let’s keep running up the score and get up some of these stats.

  34. Mike Axisa says:

NOBODY MESSES WITH BRIAN BRUNEY!!! NOBODY!!!

  35. Marc says:

Mlb.tv has crapped out. It isn’t showing game feeds from either wpix or yes. It will however do radio… Damnit!

  36. A says:

The yankees are telling the mets to go get their fucking shinebox

  37. Mike Axisa says:

I’m hoping we see Matsui hit his second homer of the inning here.

  38. Double T says:

No mercy Yankee bats go for the throat!

  39. Ivan says:

Swisher just doing his usual walking exercise.

  40. Yankees_Universe says:

Need 3 touch downs today to wipe out the frustration of the whole week..

  41. Jobamania says:

reasons liek this why i choose sabathia for the yankees over santana.

dont get me wrong, santana is a fucking AWESOME pitcher but sabathia is more of the style that fits our club. Even on a C.C. off day he can go 6 innings

  42. Accent Shallow says:

Would someone like to remind me why this team bunts, again?

  43. Stryker says:

so now will burnett lose the strikezone again and go all rick ankiel on us in the top of the 5th?

  44. Mike Axisa says:

    Melky ruins everything!!!

  45. Accent Shallow says:

Really, Melky? You needed a triple? Whatever, I’ll take it.

  46. handtius says:

    Good lord.

  47. Eric says:

haha melky better be ready to get plunked later

  48. Jobamania says:

melky thrown out at 3rd once again, rofl.

    love the effort melky

  49. Zach says:

    Does that 2nd run count?

  50. AJ says:

John Sterling’s call on that Melky hit:

“It’s hit to deep center, IT IS HIGH, IT IS FAR, IT IS…off the wall”

  51. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

You never make the 3rd out of an inning at 3rd base.

THATS’S BUSH LEAGUE!!! DFA MELKY NOW!!!

  52. mko says:

Good thing that Melky got thrown out, you don’t want AJ getting too cold on the bench, hehe…

  53. Zach says:

UPDATE, 2:04 p.m.: Federal government will stop water-boarding prisoners in favor of making them watch A.J. Burnett pitch. “I give in! Here are the secret plans! No more!”

    from pete abe

  54. Dela G says:

jesus christ, they are straight up killing the mets today

  55. IvanS says:

I had my diatribe for today all planned out…about how this series should have been a sweep for the mets because friday night was just a lucky once in a lifetime bounce. Now I’m ready to say that this should have been a sweep for the yankees because there’s no way they should get shut down by Nieve.

  56. bonestock94 says:

Oh, what I would pay to send Bruney out in the top 9th and have him fist pump with the final out.

  57. WesternYankeeFan says:

    Way to stop working, MLB.tv

  58. dkidd says:

cone and leiter are the best. please fire john flaherty

  59. gxpanos says:

Obviously, nothing to complain about. But the Yanks just cant seem to figure out this whole baserunning thing.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Melky just wanted to go for the hell of it I guess. But yeah nothing to complain about since this isn’t a habitual thing.

  60. YankeeScribe says:

Baseball is a funny game. The day after we get owned by a crappy journeyman pitcher we blow out one of the game’s best pitchers…

  61. Jobamania says:

thanks for your 27 ERA and 3.67 whip Johan.

    sigh

  62. John Sterling says:

ittl be a 2-1 to Melky (i forgot the count…)
Swung on and hit in the air deep to left IT IS HIGH IT IS FAR IT IS…..(long pause)….off the left field wall..

  63. John says:

We would’ve scored way more it wasnt for that unclutch DP by A-rod

  64. YankeeScribe says:

    I have a man-crush on Cervelli

  65. Jobamania says:

lol mets announcers talking about taking out castillo, beltran, wright, cora

  66. Zach says:

    Way to hustle Cora

  67. Dela G says:

wow melkman with the terrible baserunning error there

  68. AJ says:

I would love to see Bruney as well. Let’s see him come out and strike out the side, point to K-Rod and just flip out with a 10 minute fist pumping, sky pointing celebration.

  69. Dave says:

    ALEX CORA WINS GAMES

  70. John says:

    13 hits + 13 runs = EFFICIENCY!

  71. JeffG says:

Where did Cora learn to be a crying bitch like that? Did he play for the Redsox?

  72. Marc says:

ARGH!!! MLB.TV IS STILL DOWN!!!! Why can’t they mess up the service when the yanks are down 0-6?!?!!

  73. Zach says:

So does anyone else believe AJ has a 2 hitter going?

  74. Jobamania says:

    cervelli doing WORK

    god i love this kid.

    go away jose doubles molina

  75. John Sterling says:

Lets trade cervelli while his stock is high…anybody else agree?

  76. Eric says:

Cervelli boosting the avg from .269 to .309 today. I love it.

  77. Jobamania says:

    oh captain my captain.

  78. dkidd says:

    come on phillies!!!

  79. AJ says:

John Sterling and Suzan Waldman are talking about the Mets bringing in their Japanese pitcher who sucks. The floodgates are open, and the runs won’t stop.

  80. Dave says:

Hah jeter raised his avg .011 so far today. Ridic.

  81. YankeeScribe says:

Hopefully this is the start of Burnett getting his Ish together for the rest of the season

  82. Jobamania says:

13 runs and arod is 0-3

    lol

  83. Bob Stone says:

    3.2IP
    6 hits
    6 runs
    8 WALKS
    1 strikeout

    HOLY SHIT

    • Zach says:

Anyone else remember when Francesa wanted to trade for Cabrera and really wanted Willis after Alex opted out?

Cabrera is no long a 3B and Willis is lost

      • Well to be fair to Francesa (I can’t believe I just typed those words), the Yanks could have moved Cabrera to 1B also and also gone out and signed Lowell or acquired some other third baseman.

Me? I’m good with Tex and A-Rod at the corners, thank you very much.

      • Dela G says:

well cabrera is the best hitting 1B in the game….

let’s not try to make it like he turned into a slob

        • Zach says:

It wasnt a knock on Cabrera as a 1B. They would of had to clean the farm to get Cabrera and Willis, and not even a year later they would have to search for a 3B and wouldnt have the farm to get one.

        • James K says:

Heard of a guy named “Pujols”? He might disagree with you.

    • Bob Stone says:

      That is sad

    • AndrewYF says:

The Tigers really should have just settled for Cabrera. That would have been a really excellent trade for them then. Now, it’s just a good one since the Tigers couldn’t help but screw it up by signing Dontrelle.

  88. Dela G says:

man AJ has his 2 seamer killing today

  89. This is a response to a comment by Zach in the last thread:

“Running over the catcher is different, if the catcher is blocking the plate the runner was the right to get to the plate.”

But if the ball reaches the third baseman before the runner gets there, and the third baseman blocks the bag to tag the runner out, can the runner just run through the third baseman and try to knock him down for the sole purpose of trying to knock the ball out of the third baseman’s glove? I think that if the ball arrives before the baserunner and the defender then blocks the runner’s path to the base, that’s just too bad for the runner and he shouldn’t be able to try to hurt the guy to knock the ball out of his glove. I think the response will be that if the defender doesn’t have the ball then the runner should be allowed to hit him if he’s in the way, and my answer is, well, of course he can, runners can always run through a defender who is in the basepath. But intentionally running through a player who has the ball and has the base blocked is different, as is absolutely lighting up a catcher who doesn’t have the ball, and who is in all likelihood unprepared because he’s looking to the field for a throw, when the runner could just as easily slide and touch the bag without attempting to hurt someone.

“If you dont like the sliding into second okay, but then its time to do away completely with the infielders ‘touching’ second base on a DP.”

I think those two rules are mutually exclusive. The purpose of the rule allowing a defender to take his foot off second just before actually receiving the ball is to protect the health of the defender, who is in a very vulnerable position with a runner likely sliding into his ankles/knees. That has nothing to do with allowing a baserunner to slide 5 feet wide of the base with the sole purpose to sliding through the defender. I think that in allowing baserunners to do that MLB is actually creating a dangerous situation, since they are allowing baserunners to do something (run outside the basepath) that they wouldn’t otherwise be allowed to do. Unless you expressly say “you may slide outside the basepath in order to slide through the defender and not slide into the base,” the runner wouldn’t be allowed to do it. In fact, allowing the baserunner to slide wide of the base actually negates the good done by the rule allowing the middle infielder to move his foot off the base, doesn’t it? So, we allow defenders to move off the base a bit early so that they won’t get hurt, but then we allow the baserunner to slide outside the basepath anyway, actually putting the defender back into the dangerous situation we just tried to get him out of? That doesn’t make sense to me.

(Sorry this comment was so long, guys.)

    • Bob Stone says:

Excellent comment – Don’t mind the length.

The base runner is only allowed to slide away from second base to the extent that he can still touch it with his hand or foot.

But I do find that rule contradictory to the rules governing running in the lane going to first.

You bring up some very iinteresting inconsistencies in the rules (or at least lack of definition).

Why is it okay to run over the catcher and try to knock the ball out of his hands but Damon’s running in this game, in the base path, inadvertently knocking the ball loose is not okay.

I think we need some refinement of the official rules in this area.

      • “The base runner is only allowed to slide away from second base to the extent that he can still touch it with his hand or foot.”

Right, totally… I should probably clarify one general issue with my comment above… I think when I discuss a “rule” I mean the rule as it is actually applied on the field. So, yeah, the baserunner is supposed to be able to touch the base, but we see plays all the time where the runner slides to a spot where he couldn’t possibly reach the base. So, yeah, that’s all… I’m referring to the rules as we actually see them applied in games, as opposed to how they may be written in the book.

    • Zach says:

“I think that if the ball arrives before the baserunner and the defender then blocks the runner’s path to the base, that’s just too bad for the runner and he shouldn’t be able to try to hurt the guy to knock the ball out of his glove.”

Too bad for the runner? Come on man, its called hustling, they’re not trying to hurt the guy, they’re trying to get to the base to help their team.
Most of the plays at home are split second plays, what do you want the base runner do-stop 1 foot away from the catcher? Give up half way down the basepath to avoid an injury?

You can say its inconsistant for Damon (the ARod play is a better example_ to be out while running over the catcher is legal, but if you cant see the difference between the two plays then i dont know, thats part of baseball- to be able to realize the respect of the game, not like football where you have a pile of players poking each other in the eye, grabbing body parts, etc.

“The purpose of the rule allowing a defender to take his foot off second just before actually receiving the ball is to protect the health of the defender”

So why does the first baseman have to keep his foot on the base? We saw Tex almost get hurt at a play at first, Youk got cleated at first as well. Maybe they should add those little league orange softball bases in foulground so the boys dont get too close to each other.
If the runner slides wide and still is able to reach the base then its a clean play.

I understand you want to make the game safer or whatever, but did you make a post when Tex slid late into 2nd against Texas after he was hit twice? I mean lets put a screen infront of the pitcher that way hes protected from line drives, or have automatic ejections when a batter is hit by a pitch

      • “Too bad for the runner? Come on man, its called hustling, they’re not trying to hurt the guy, they’re trying to get to the base to help their team.”

The point of the game is to beat the ball to the base or to beat the tag, not to brutally force the ball out of the defender’s grasp when you’ve already been beaten to the spot.

“Most of the plays at home are split second plays, what do you want the base runner do-stop 1 foot away from the catcher? Give up half way down the basepath to avoid an injury?”

No. Like I said, the runner should go for the plate if and when possible. Also, like I said above, if a defender is in the baserunner’s path and doesn’t have the ball, the runner has every right to run through the guy if it’s the only way for him to advance forward.

“You can say its inconsistant for Damon (the ARod play is a better example_ to be out while running over the catcher is legal, but if you cant see the difference between the two plays then i dont know, thats part of baseball- to be able to realize the respect of the game, not like football where you have a pile of players poking each other in the eye, grabbing body parts, etc.”

I never said anything about the Damon and A-Rod plays, and I honestly think they’re totally irrelevant to the points I covered above and in my original post. We DO agree, however, that this is baseball and not football. To me, that means “no tackling.” Again, baseball is about beating the ball to the bag or beating the tag to the spot, not about brutally forcing the ball from the defender’s grasp when you’ve already been beaten to the spot. The latter would be much more appropriate in football.

“So why does the first baseman have to keep his foot on the base? We saw Tex almost get hurt at a play at first, Youk got cleated at first as well. Maybe they should add those little league orange softball bases in foulground so the boys dont get too close to each other.
If the runner slides wide and still is able to reach the base then its a clean play.”

Because there’s a clear difference between (1) having a baserunner running down the first base line and stepping on the base as he passes and (2) having a baserunner slide into second base, and over the base, while a defender is standing there and trying to deliver the ball to first base for the double play. MLB clearly agrees with my assessment, since they allow the defender at second a little leeway. Are you arguing that MLB shouldn’t allow the middle infielder to make the “phantom tag” while trying to turn a double play? That’s kind of a different question than the ones I addressed above.

“I understand you want to make the game safer or whatever, but did you make a post when Tex slid late into 2nd against Texas after he was hit twice?”

Whether I posted anything when Tex slid into second is completely irrelevant. I don’t remember the play perfectly off the top of my head. If he slid so wide of the bag that he couldn’t touch the bag from where he slid, then that would be something I argued against above. Whether a Yankee does it is completely irrelevant to my analysis.

“I mean lets put a screen infront of the pitcher that way hes protected from line drives, or have automatic ejections when a batter is hit by a pitch”

This is completely irrelevant and does not address the arguments I posted in my comment above or in my original comment. I’m loathe to even dignify that comment with a response, but nothing I’ve said in this conversation means that I think every single little dangerous aspect of the game of baseball should be addressed by treating the players and the game with kid gloves. My point(s) have been about rules that I think make the game more dangerous by expressly waiving the restrictions contained in other rules (i.e. no running outside the basepaths or physically obliterating a defender who is trying to tag the runner).

        • PS: Re the “phantom tag” rule. Frankly, I don’t really love that rule, either. If the player can’t make the play, he can’t make the play, and I don’t love the idea that we help the defender by allowing him to, in effect, break the rules, just to make a play a little quicker. So, no, my opinions are not just based on trying to treat players with kid-gloves and protect them from every little nick and bruise they may suffer. Like I said above, I just don’t think we should have rules that allow players to do things that (1) they wouldn’t otherwise be allowed to do and that (2) put players in dangerous situations they wouldn’t otherwise encounter absent those rules.

  124. John says:

    TOUCHDOWN PENA!

  125. AJ says:

And Mark Sanchez connects with Leon Washington for the second touchdown in the game. With the extra point, it’s Jets 14, Patriots 0

  126. dkidd says:

nesn announcers are the biggest homers ever

  127. Bob Stone says:

  129. YankeeScribe says:

Seems like everyone but A-Rod got a hit today

  130. John says:

    cano hittin em far

  131. Bob Stone says:

    Yeah Phillies – 9-5!!!

  132. dkidd says:

bard learning that big league hitters can hit 96 mph fastballs

  133. Moshe Mandel says:

Bard getting smacked around a bit in Philly- allowed an inherited runner to score, plus two of his own. But watching him, his secondary stuff is better than I had heard, and his control is decent at best.

  134. Mike Axisa says:

Well, I’m sure a whole ton of people are happy Johan Santana was the best player for the Yankees today.

  135. Accent Shallow says:

I’d ask why Veras isn’t pitching here, but no need to pitch about bullpen usage with a 15 (!) run lead.

  136. John says:

heh Bard walked Chan Ho Park

  137. LMAO

Daniei Bard just walked Chan Ho Park! On four pitches!!!!!!!!!!

  138. steve (different one) says:

    Robertson looking sharp.

  139. Dave says:

Veras not gonna get some work?

  140. Eric says:

Robertson should get a shot as the 8th inning guy.

  141. Zach says:

Saito hits Rollins with first pitch, run scores

  142. Just what I want Chip Caray! Spend a half inning talking about the importance of David Ortiz to the Red Sox line up…DURING A METS YANKEES GAME!!!!!!!!!!!

  143. dkidd says:

red sox bullpen blowing up. satisfying

  144. Moshe Mandel says:

I bet the next time we see D-Rob, it will be in a big spot. He has passed all of his auditions.

    • steve (different one) says:

i actually think using him today shows he’s moved up the charts. Girardi is making a point of keeping him sharp with the off-day tomorrow.

  145. Bob Stone says:

Phils 11 Sox 5 Still bases loaded – Looks like game ova!

  146. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Isringhausen on the 60 day DL. I guess the Rays have to put Price in the bullpen.

    /MSM’d

    • Zach says:

Wasnt he crying last week about not getting save opportunities? Izzy, Balfour, Wheeler, Nelson, Percival are all hurt or ineffective

  147. John says:

    11-5 Phils now

  148. Dave says:

Ohlendorf: the one that got away?

  149. Takashi Saito – 8 pitches 0 strikes 8 balls

  150. Accent Shallow says:

    Better stuff: Igawa or Takahashi?

  151. Joey H. says:

Today is my birthday so I went out to celebrate for a bit. What did I miss? PFFFFFT ROFL!!111!!

  152. Dela G says:

good to see phil hughes in

  153. steve (different one) says:

    Hughes’ periphs getting dead sexy….

  154. Accent Shallow says:

    Phil Hughes sighting!

  155. steve (different one) says:

who is playing with Wang’s hair?? (heh)

  156. Dave says:

Ugh. Hate to hear the Wang stays in the rotation no matter what argument.

  157. Alex S says:

who was that playing with chien-ming wang’s hair???!!!

  158. John says:

I love that Bard’s ERA rose to 3.55

  159. John Sterling says:

can somebody please explain to me why girardi is such a shmuck?
if he planned on using phil and he needed work why only give him an inning if he easily coulda gave him more…
i just dont get him sometimes…

  160. Bob Stone says:

Berroa sucks – DFA him – Please

  161. Jack says:

AJ went 7 so he couldn’t have easily gave him more. Phil will be asked to pitch more innings on Wednesday with Wang’s start. Joe wanted to get Phil some work with the day off tomorrow and CC going on Tuesday.

  162. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Sergi Mitre may be a factor for the Yanks bullpen in the very near future.

  163. James K says:

Don’t get me wrong–I’m thrilled to see Phil Hughes pitch. I can really see him becoming a great starter someday. I have more faith in him panning out than Joba, even. This brings me to my next point–why is he pitching with a 15 run lead when he could easily be used in a far more valuable situation? If the argument is he needs innings, sure, I agree that he needs innings. But this is one inning in mop-up duty. Why not give him a few? Or get Wang out of the rotation and replace him with Hughes. Maybe today is just to keep his arm fresh.

Sometimes I think that Joe Girardi somehow merged that commercial where they say “The odds of becoming a professional athlete: 1 in 10,000. The odds of a child having autism: 1 in 166.”

    He’s done both.

    • Accent Shallow says:

The reason to give Hughes an inning here was covered upthread; they want him fresh in case he has to relieve Wang on Wednesday.

I’d assume that if Wang is as awful on Wednesday as he was in his other starts, Hughes will take his spot in the rotation.

    • Zach says:

Look up and you’ll see the same question asked and 5 answers

    • Jack says:

IT’S TO KEEP HIM FRESH FOR WEDNESDAY! Is this that hard to figure out? They want him to pitch more innings on Wednesday, but he hasn’t pitched in a few days, there is a day off tomorrow, and CC is going on Tuesday.

    • Ivan says:

This is to just get Hughes sharp for Weds when CMW starts.

  164. Accent Shallow says:

A swinging strike three on a fastball right down the pipe on a 3-2 count?

    I love it!

  165. Eric says:

SNY just showed the K-Rod/Bruney incident. Bruney looked better. Bruney didn’t back down and K-Rod didn’t do shit until people were in between them. Then he started with the theatrics.

    • steve (different one) says:

yeah, Bruney was dumb to start this, but K-Rod managed to look even worse today.

i’d laugh so hard if he gets suspended and the Mets miss the playoffs by a game again….

    • Bob Stone says:

The whole thing is ridiculous. Bruney should keep his trap shut and K-Rod should TRY to stop being such and ass hole

    • donttradecano says:

is there a link to this video online somwhere?

  166. Eric says:

    Robertson and Hughes: 2IP, 4K, 0BB

  167. Dave says:

By the way: Who is in favor of giving cervelli more PT?

  168. Dela G says:

    YANKEES WIN!

  169. JP says:

Someone will no doubt say this is stupid, but I think the pitchers do better with Cervelli.

Someone will say “small sample size,” but the pitchers seemed better when Posada was injured.

    • steve (different one) says:

      perhaps.

but the yankees are also playing better teams right now.

    • The Artist says:

We can’t say that yet definitively, but I think you’re on to something.

    • steve (different one) says:

also, some of the good starts during that stretch (Burnett, Hughes) were caught by Cash

but i don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Cervelli is a better defensive catcher than Posada.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Small sample size. There, I said it. Posada’s career numbers suggest that he has caught just as well as his backups over his career. I see no reason that it should change this year. I bet if you took the Wang numbers out of Jorge’s stats, they would look pretty similar to Cervelli’s.

      • JP says:

That’s the party line, for sure, and I can’t say it isn’t correct.

But I’ve heard it said/written two or three times recently, that Posada has an “abrasive personality,” and that it’s been a recurring theme through the years that certain pitchers don’t like working with him.

Look, anyone with any baseball sense knows when you have a catcher who can hit you put up with their defense, because it just puts you at an advantage over other teams. That’s not in dispute. The “wildcard,” however, is the fact that it’s nearly impossible to quantitate the effect a catcher has on a pitcher’s performance. Raw statistics (catcher’s ERA, etc.), are extremely difficult to interpret.

So let’s pose a silly hypothetical: If you thought that you were going to get a mediocre performance out of Joba every time he pitched to Posada, that he would struggle with control, because Jorgie’s pissing him off and eroding his confidence by fighting with him, would you still put him in there, knowing he’s a much better bat than Cervelli?

I’d always rather have a defensive minded catcher who puts that aspect of his job ahead of everything else. It’s just a “hunchy” opinion, but I think when you look at the fact that the Yankees have struggled with pitching more than anything else the last 7 years, I think Posada bears some of the responsibility for that.

  170. Tony says:

Good job beating up on the second best pitcher in NY

  171. Carl says:

    He’s no CC!

  172. Charlie says:

It really sucks i missed this game, but the box score makes me happy enough. Great win, i knew burnett would show up today, and way to embarass Johan. Hopefully this gets our offense firing on all cylinders and we can start another big win streak. And who better to do that against than the washington nationals?

  173. Charlie says:

wow, look at lohud’s updates during the first few innings of the game. Ridiculous pessimism and sarcasm, making fun of A.J. How’s 7 shutout innings look now Pete Abe?
